Teaching excellence Inspirational teaching Inspirational teaching is hugely important at the University of Huddersfield and helps our students to achieve the highest academic standards. To recognise the value of teaching excellence, every year we ask our students which tutor deserves a Thank You Award. Meet the University’s Inspirational Teacher award winner in 2017, Dr Mark Mynett. Senior Lecturer in Music Technology and Production, Mark is well known at the University for his dedication to his students and his extensive real-world experience. He has tasted success as a professional musician, including worldwide album releases and several years of high-profile touring. A career as a self-employed record producer followed, alongside gaining his degree in Popular Music Production. More recently Mark completed his PhD, and he remains active in producing, engineering and mixing. Mark conveys a genuine passion for music of all genres, which has driven him since attending his first concert, aged 12.
Here’s what one of Mark’s students wrote on their nomination form:
Mark’s lectures are always interesting and he’s always happy to help out if you need it. He always seems enthusiastic to be with us, makes a real effort to bring good examples of media in and explains everything at a pace I can understand. 14

"Before my current role, I worked at Johnson & Johnson. The company has an amazing attitude towards their customers and everything that J&J do. “I wanted to have a broad set of responsibilities, to feel accepted and appreciated within a team. To be given a chance to do challenging projects that can make a difference and to work for a company that has strong ‘CREDO’ values and a great attitude all across the business. “Taking a work placement is definitely a win–win deal. Matt Roberts MotoGP Presenter, BBC Sport United Kingdom “I am from Huddersfield so maybe I am biased but it is a great town with friendly people. During the course of my degree in Communication Arts with Spanish I got involved in some good projects in local radio and television that inspired me towards a career in sports journalism, as well as getting to spend a year working in Oviedo, Spain.
Sally Nugent News Presenter/Journalist, BBC Sport United Kingdom “I received such a warm welcome at the University of Huddersfield when I started my French and Communications Arts degree. Huddersfield is a good size and really gave you that feel of a university town. “My time at the University has had an impact on my career and is certainly where it all began. The course seemed unusual and offered a mixture of disciplines including linguistics, French literature and media–relations among other areas. I and some other students spent a year in a French university in the city of Besançon which furthered my studies of French television and culture.” Sally has been working for the BBC for over 15 years, starting as a broadcast journalist at her local radio station.
24
“This gave me the opportunity to pursue my early career in Barcelona, which eventually led back to the BBC. I don’t think you fully appreciate the opportunities presented to you whilst at university and how close they are to the real world. The biggest lesson is that you must apply yourself because nobody else will do it for you. As in life, you will only get out what you are prepared to put in.”

Maythem Ali Electronics Engineer, Dyson Kuwait “I completed my Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng(Hons) degree at the University of Huddersfield and straight after, I have been offered a PhD fee–waiver scholarship which I happily accepted. My research was about developing a novel method for non–invasive blood flow measurement. Following this, I managed to secure a job as an Electronic Engineer at Dyson Research and Development (R&D). “I have spent 9 years at the University of Huddersfield for both of my degrees and I am lucky to witness the massive transformation that the University went through including new buildings, facilities and services. I had such a great experience at the University, and with the help of the University teaching and support staff, I acquired the skills I needed to allow me to join the industrial world.
“Aside from my studies, I enjoyed very much the vibrant and friendly atmosphere on campus. I always had a passion for sports and particularly volleyball and the University did not let me down. The University helped me to start the volleyball club where I competed in local leagues and won several trophies. The University also organised events throughout the years such as International Sport and Food days. All those sports and social activities gave me the opportunity to meet new students and make friends. “I am now part of the R&D Electronics team at Dyson. The company recently invested £1.5bn to launch 100 new products and product categories in the next 4 years and I am excited to be part of this challenge. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at the University of Huddersfield for helping me to achieve my dream and work for a high–end company.”
Aftab Afzal Electronics Engineer, Rolls–Royce Oman “My Electrical Engineering degree proved invaluable for developing my skills because when you start your first job it can often take time before you are given the responsibility to work on the high profile projects. But because of their confidence in the skills I had obtained from my degree here at Huddersfield, from day one, they have had me working on the important assignments, which is great. I have been involved in certification of Trent XWB EEC which has been installed on Trent XWB engine for Airbus A350. The Rolls–Royce Trent XWB, specifically designed for operation on the Airbus A350 XWB family, is the most efficient large civil aerospace engine ever produced.
26
“If you are a non–UK national this can often prove very difficult but with the help of the University’s Computing and Engineering Placement Unit, in the third year of my BEng degree I took part in a really successful one year work–placement as an Industrial Engineer where I got hands on experience in my chosen industry. This shows just how successful the University is at helping students get into work during and after their studies.”

Facebook Vietnam “I chose International Design Marketing and Communications as my graduate programme because the programme was the perfect match of what I was looking for which had both Design and Communications. The University of Huddersfield was also the only university which started the programme in January, which suited me well.
“Going to the University of Huddersfield has been a great experience in my life. During my time at the University, I was taught and mentored by knowledgeable and well respected professors. Courses were built based on one–to–one models where every student had the valuable time for their University projects.
“Before the University of Huddersfield, my background was in Graphic Design. When I looked for a good university to further my education, the University of Huddersfield was the right decision due to its well–designed programmes. They are comprehensive with limited numbers of students. Also, the programmes were built for different interests and learning methodologies.
“Every class was made of in–class sections, research and group work. After graduation, the knowledge and skills I gained through the University have helped me in many ways with my daily work.
“During my time there, the University always provided the students with up-to-date technologies and learning materials. Access to the library was 24 hour with an incredible variety of books and unlimited online courses which were vital for students to complete their assignments. The staff were friendly and helpful whenever I had any questions or concerns.

“Last but not least, while my previous universities required students to memorise everything, the University of Huddersfield allowed and expected students to explore and think on their own. Antonia Ciurea Human Resources Assistant, the Bosch Group Company Travel and Tourism Management BA(Hons) Romania “On my placement year I provided support with the HR operations for a Bosch Group company. “During my placement year I have learned what an organisational culture is, how a company functions in terms of processes and legal requirements, what it means to be a valuable part of a team and also how to effectively communicate in a business. Along with that, I have gained friends, I had a lovely time and I used to go to work with the smile on my face, knowing that I belonged there and I could make a difference. “Throughout the year, I have developed my communication skills, gained confidence, improved my overall HR knowledge and learning processes critical to the HR position. I also developed my IT skills and developed creativity by being allowed to work on projects both on my own and in a team. I received some great support from career advisors at the University and found that employability modules inspired me to undertake a placement year as a Manufacturing Engineer Intern in the Bosch Group company. “Work experience gave me the opportunity to get to know the discipline outside the campus and at the same time it enhanced my communication and problem solving skills. “In my opinion these skills are vital for students to develop not only in academia but also in the real working environment before graduation.
“I undertook projects relevant to my Chemical Engineering degree that were making processes efficient through development, improvement of equipment and safe operation. “Meanwhile, it also gave me knowledge of manufacturing principles and widened my career prospects.

Batyr Ospanov Founder/Designer, Batyr Ospanov Designs Kazakhstan “I graduated with a degree in Transport Design from the University of Huddersfield. My company is a young, but rapidly developing company based in the heart of Almaty City, Kazakhstan. “In 2015 we were awarded the prestigious Luxury Lifestyle Award in the category of Best Interior Design Studio. The event was held in Dubai and has been officially partnered and sponsored by Audi Corporate. “I have had a very broad experience with leading companies that are based in London, Italy and Monaco. After graduating I worked in the field of superyacht design, private jets and interior design on large–scale residential projects. The short–term internships turned into successful employment that lasted for almost 3 years. Not only did I get extensive and valuable experience to develop professionally, but I was inspired to create a design company focused on luxury segment in my homeland. “During its operating years the company has had a great opportunity to design luxurious jewellery and perfume retail shops, high end luxury apartments and villas in Kazakhstan and Central Europe. “I believe that the degree at Huddersfield gave me a broad variety of skills and knowledge to be successful in the creative industry.
“Employers were amazed on the amount of input that I was giving into the design process during my work experiences. I can’t forget how at the end of the first week of a short internship in one of the companies the Director offered me a full-time position. “During my employment years I always dreamt of running my own company and just couldn’t wait a long time for it. When I decided to work for myself and establish a proper company I was criticised by some experts due to my little experience at the field and lack of financial stability. I agree it is very scary to start your own company; you make mistakes and run crazy sometimes. But it is such a great feeling when you see your clients with happy faces using bespoke products and interior spaces which are results of combined creativity and client wishes. “For those who wish to run their own businesses I would suggest gaining some experience from the best companies in the market, even for free as you are investing in yourself. Do not stay for long time, try to learn as much as you can and find a perfect time to leave and start at your own. I think employers would hate me after reading this!” www.batyrospanov.design

Managing Director, Synergy Biotech Mexico My experience at the University of Huddersfield was good as I was able to learn state–of–the–art techniques in microbiology and molecular biology which were the foundation of my research. It was not easy, as I was coming from an engineering background, these novel methodologies were a whole new world that I had to explore, understand and apply quickly to succeed in my project. “Fortunately, I had good and patient supervisors and laboratory technicians whom were utterly helpful. The experience and knowledge I got helped me to obtain a position as post doctorate in Food Microbiology at the University of Wageningen, Holland in less than two weeks after passing my viva.
“Outside the laboratory I also had such a great experience at Huddersfield. I travelled extensively around the UK and Europe, joined the boxing club at the University and made some good Yorkshire friends. After finishing my post doc, I decided to come back to Mexico and start my own business: Synergy BioTech® which is a consultancy agency in food science and technology and a food testing laboratory.

Alex Beldea Photographer Romania “I completed two degrees at the University of Huddersfield, a Bachelor's degree and a Master's by Research in Photography. “An important aspect of the course was the flexibility towards the photographic genre each individual student wanted to follow. For example, I could develop my interest in documentary photography while other students could build up a fashion portfolio. At the same time, we had modules related to commercial photography which meant that all of us, at the end of the course, would be able to produce commercial work while developing personal projects. “Winning the APHE Bursary allowed me to attend the first edition of the Offspring Photo Meet in London, where I had the chance to meet key professionals within the photographic world. It was there where I had one of the first opportunities to present my documentary work. There I met people like Simon Bainbridge, Editor of the British Journal of Photography publication where my project ‘Valid for Travel’ www.alexbeldea.com

Advertising and Marketing Communications BA(Hons) Semi–Finalist L’Oreal Brandstorm 2016
“One of the most valuable skills I have developed during my Advertising and Marketing Communications course at Huddersfield is the ability of thinking both creatively and very strategically, which I believe is very important for this particular industry.
“My 4 years at the University have been very diverse. I had the opportunity to undertake an Erasmus exchange programme in Paris and a 12 months placement in a great international company working as part of their e–commerce team.
“My course gave me the possibility to be part of a huge international competition, L’Oreal Brandstorm, where skills such as team work, strategic thinking, creativity, planning, and innovation is being challenged and you get to have a lot of fun and meet professionals from an exciting industry. Working with my classmates was a real opportunity to put into practice what we had been taught and enjoy this experience together.
“The years at the University of Huddersfield gave me a lot of confidence and opportunity to unleash my potential. Only now do I realise how much these experiences help me stand out among graduates from other universities. The Library We like it when stuff just works and we’re pretty sure you do too. We believe equipment and systems should be simple without anyone finding it difficult to use them. It’s why you’ll have a single log-in for WiFi (which you can use anywhere on campus), email and all the software you’ll need for your course.
Zar Chi Su Wai Business with Finance MSc
You’ll also have storage for your work – on and off campus. So the next time you leave your memory stick on the bus you’ll still have a back up. Of course, because we keep investing in our facilities and technology, you’ll be studying in an environment that reflects what things are like in the real world too. No matter what subject you study.
Myanmar/Burmese “The University of Huddersfield is a popular and pleasant place to study with a good reputation. I love spending time at the library where I can get all the support I need such as books, articles and journals related to my course and I can study productively.”
The Library Our Library is pretty special. It contains over 1000 study spaces and over 500 ultra modern PCs and Macs. And there’s a huge number of books and journal articles for you to make use of. Around 330,000 in print form and millions in digital format. You’ll be able to find information easily via our MyReading system that you can use whenever you want, wherever you want. The Library is open seven days a week during term time and all day long for most of the year, and our computer lab is open 24 hours a day all year round. So what do our current students think of it all? Well, in the 2016 National Student Satisfaction (NSS) survey, their satisfaction with the Library is above average when compared to other universities. In fact our students gave us a 90% satisfaction rating.
