Huddersfield is a TEF gold-rated institution delivering consistently outstanding teaching and learning of the highest quality found in the UK (Teaching Excellence Framework, 2017). This confirms the University of Huddersfield as one of the top educational institutions in the UK for employability, teaching and learning*.

We won the first Global Teaching Excellence Award. It recognised the University’s commitment to world-class teaching and its success in developing students as independent learners and critical thinkers (HEA, 2017).

*The University of Huddersfield’s TEF Gold rating was awarded in June 2017. It is valid for up to four years from that date, and may be subject to change.

University of the Year

A Five Star University

The Times Higher Education named us as their University of the Year in November 2013. They liked our ‘bold, imaginative and innovative initiatives.’

QS Stars have given us five stars for Internationalisation. That means we are “highly international, demonstrating excellence in our international student growth, facilities, teaching and research collaborations.”

First in England

Athena Swan

Knowledgeable, qualified teachers can inspire you and help you to achieve great things. We’ve been the English university with the highest proportion of professionally-qualified teaching staff for four years running (HESA – first awarded in 2016, maintained in 2017, 2018 and 2019).

We’re serious about gender equality. We want an equal number of men and women on our science and engineering courses, for instance. Our commitment was recognised in 2015 with the Athena SWAN Bronze Award.

As a result, you’ll find that many of our courses have been recognised or accredited by external professional bodies.

IN ENGLAND FOR PROFESSIONALLY QUALIFIED TEACHING STAFF*

6

We were the first university in England to achieve recognition as having the highest proportion of professionally-qualified teaching staff*. Just under 95% of our academic staff hold an appropriate teaching qualification. We’ve been the UK’s leading university for National Teaching Fellowships over the last ten years, winning more than any other institution. Think of them like the teaching Oscars – they rate the UK’s best lecturers. It’s part of our ongoing drive for teaching excellence, which helps you achieve great things too. We’re the first and only UK university where 100% of permanent teaching staff** are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. So you’ll learn from some of the best, helping you be the best. *HESA – First awarded in 2016, maintained in 2017, 2018 and 2019. **Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.

We also offer a whole range of specialist support to ensure you get the most out of your studies including academic and professional support.”

Jodie Boyd Senior Lecturer in Career Guidance and Development

Why Huddersfield?

“By choosing to study at the University of Huddersfield you’ll benefit from a hugely experienced teaching team. You will be taught by staff who are at the forefront of their subject area as all permanent staff have, or are completing, doctorates. Meaning you will benefit from research informed teaching delivered by experts in their field.

Inspiring teaching What better way to demonstrate first class teaching than by speaking to our students and one of our award-winning academics? Senior Lecturer in English Literature Dr Todd Borlik – who was born in Indianapolis, USA – loves teaching in the UK and at the University of Huddersfield.

What makes a great teacher?

“The University is a diverse and vibrant community and the teaching staff are truly dedicated to their students.”

English Literature BA(Hons) student Aaisha Raja agrees. “Todd’s a great teacher in many ways, but one of them is his ability to really make his subject matter relevant,” she said.

Having previously taught at the University of Washington and Bloomsburg University, Todd likes how well the UK education system enables teachers to get to know their students, and believes his teaching has been enhanced as a result.

Adapting teaching to the needs of students

“Perhaps the most important thing a teacher can do is to radiate conviction in the significance of the subject,” believes Todd.

Todd’s passion and enthusiasm for his subject is clearly infectious. “I wear my enthusiasm for Shakespeare on my sleeve,” he said. Aaisha added: “Todd is incredibly engaging – he has the ability to interest everyone in the subject that he lectures about.”

“Students learn in different ways and I adapt my teaching methods because of this,” says Todd. Todd describes how his approach to teaching has been shaped by his students: “In response to conversations with BAME (black, Asian, and minority ethnic) students at Huddersfield, I developed a module titled ‘Global Shakespeares’, which surveys the vibrant history of Shakespearean adaptation across cultures all over the world.” The module was met with such enthusiasm from students that it won a ‘Diversity Prize for Curriculum Innovation at the University.’ Todd says of the award, “It was indisputably one of the highlights of my teaching career.”

“The teaching staff at Huddersfield are truly dedicated to their students.” Dr Todd Borlik Senior Lecturer in English Literature

Inspiring student Sushmita Gudimella Computer Science BSc(Hons)

Meet Sushmita, who is originally from Hyderabad in Southern India, and came to Huddersfield to study a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. As part of her degree course at Huddersfield, Sushmita undertook a year-long work placement with aerospace giant Airbus. “One of the main reasons that I applied to Huddersfield was the opportunity to do a placement year in industry. The chances of getting a job are high when you do a placement in the UK, and the Placement Unit at the University helped me to prepare my CV, cover letter, and practice for assessment centres and interviews. During my placement at Airbus, I worked in the Information and Communications Technology department as an Information Management Intern. I worked on software tools which were used to design parts of an aircraft. My key responsibilities were to fix bugs in the software tools or framework and enhance existing tools, manage all the licenses, lead adaptive maintenance of software and I produced monthly reports. I also performed weekly tests on all the software tools to ensure everything was working as it should. I worked on four major projects at Airbus, which included a software tool for designing the ribs present in the wings of an aircraft, and a tool to design the fuel tank. Both of these software tools were really complicated and they were integrated with a computer-aided design tool called CATIA. These projects really stand out to me as I had an opportunity to take a prototype tool all the way to a production ready standard. I also got the chance to be involved in every stage of the software design and development life cycle.

10

All the projects I worked on have helped me to develop my technical and interpersonal skills. On my placement, my role was completely based on Python programming language, which I was able to learn and implement in my final year project when I returned to University, which was a collaborative project with Airbus. At the end of my placement, based on my performance, I was nominated for the graduate scheme by my manager. I had to have an interview at the end of my placement and I was offered a graduate role at Airbus, which begins a few weeks after I graduate. The best thing about doing my placement year was the personal development I can see in myself. I have definitely gained immense technical skills, and whilst I used to be afraid to voice my opinions, I can now see a great change in myself. I recently attended a placement session to help second year students at the University, and I could discuss my experience and opinions with great confidence. I think this is one of the best things I’ve gained from my placement.”

Students’ Union Officer Team 2019-2020

Campaigning for election

In the Students’ Union

12

Thank You Awards 2018

Emmanuel Haruna Education Officer July 2018 - July 2019 Students’ Union President July 2019 Huddersfield Students’ Union Emmanuel Haruna came to the University of Huddersfield to study a Master’s degree in Oil and Gas Engineering with Management. During this time, he became involved with the Students’ Union, running for a paid sabbatical position as the Education Officer. “My first contact with the Students’ Union was when I was acting as an academic representative for my course. Only one year after I arrived in the UK, I saw the opportunity to give back to the system that had positively contributed to my development, so I took part in the Students’ Union elections and was elected as Education Officer.

As Education Officer, I worked on a peer mentoring project to increase the availability of peer to peer support across campus. I have also raised over £1,500 for local charities, and worked on a policy review and amendment to improve students’ academic experience, which I have been particularly happy to see implemented across the University.

Why Huddersfield?

Inspiring student I have had the opportunity to work with academics across campus on various projects. These have included sitting on decision making committees that look at student experience and academic matters, organising school and district wide music concerts with the Christian students’ community and also working with students from over 100 countries on a variety of projects. I have met and discussed topics with Members of Parliament and councillors from the local council in Huddersfield, and worked with the Mayor of the Huddersfield district. I feel I still have so much to give back to the community. Working with students, and seeing the help and support they gained from my work, contributed to my decision to continue with the Students’ Union, and I was recently elected as the President of the Students’ Union. I am really looking forward to continuing this chapter of my time here at Huddersfield. The truth is, the opportunities here are endless and I am happy I chose to study in Huddersfield. However busy you are with studies, find the time to get involved with a society or representing other students, as these are the things that really help you develop and grow as a person.”

“I am really looking forward to this next chapter of my time here at Huddersfield.” Emmanuel Haruna Oil and Gas Engineering with Management MSc

Career support The Careers and Employability Service is committed to developing the employability of our international students at the University of Huddersfield. We offer students a range of support to help them progress their careers including activities to help them develop new skills, opportunities to meet employers on campus and individual appointments with our professionally qualified careers advisers. Our careers tools allow students to: Create a CV Use an interview simulator Prepare for assessment centres Practice psychometric tests Watch short videos from industry experts to help them with applications Effectively prepare for jobs fairs.

The Huddersfield Graduate Programme The University of Huddersfield is dedicated to developing employable graduates with ‘hands on’ industry experience. The Huddersfield Graduate Programme provides students with the opportunity to gain transferable skills with local businesses to enhance CVs and give our graduates that competitive edge.

Not only do our internships help put theoretical knowledge into practice, they are exclusive to our graduates, who we support through the application process. This includes advice on checking cover letters, CVs and arranging mock interviews to ensure graduates are fully prepared and confident when applying for graduate jobs. Our internships are paid roles, in a range of sectors from marketing and web design, to journalism and HR. The internships run for 10 weeks and provide a solid foundation for a successful career after graduation. “All students have the same access to resources but we understand that some international students have additional requirements. We help them with their career direction, offer employer-led workshops and help them understand the UK market. We also assist students with finding part-time work and talk about the importance of developing themselves as global professionals. For me it’s all about helping students to take control of their own careers; whether that’s through using our online resources to identify potential employers they might want to work for, or getting individual support with developing a personal strategy for career success. It could also be learning more about what employers look for and then signing up for activities so they can gain new skills.”

“For me it’s all about helping students to take control of their own careers.” Julie Bhagat Career Consultant

Start-Up Visa Non-EEA international graduates of the University of Huddersfield are potentially eligible to apply for the new Start-Up Visa scheme which replaces the Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) scheme. The Start-Up Visa offers an opportunity to start up a new business in the UK. This route is open for graduates of the University of Huddersfield who wish to develop an innovative and viable business idea which meets the current UKVI requirements for the scheme. The rigorous application process must be endorsed by the University before a graduate can apply for a visa for two years. The scheme is run by the Enterprise Team working in partnership with the International Office. NonEEA graduates and current international students are advised to contact the International Office for initial advice and to confirm eligibility of their current immigration status for potential transfer into the Start-Up Visa scheme.

The Library We like it when stuff just works and we’re pretty sure you do too. We believe equipment and systems should be simple so everyone is able to use them. It’s why you’ll have a single login for WiFi (which you can use anywhere on campus), an email account and all the software you’ll need for your course.

The Library is open seven days a week during term time and 24-hours a day for most of the year, plus our computer lab is open 24-hours a day all year round.

You’ll also have loads of storage for your work – on and off campus.

So what do our current students think of it all? Well, in the 2019 National Student Satisfaction (NSS) survey, their satisfaction with the Library was above average when compared to other universities. In fact, our students gave us a 92% satisfaction rating.

The Library Our Library is pretty special. It contains over 1,200 study places and over 530 ultra-modern PCs and Macs. And there’s a huge number of books and journal articles for you to make use of. Around 330,000 in print form and literally millions in digital format. You’ll be able to find information easily via our MyReading system that you can use whenever you want, wherever you want.

“The University of Huddersfield library caters to all students as there are a range of books and study spaces. My favourite area is the Scholars’ Rest, a space that offers a more flexible study environment where I get to bask in the natural light and study and socialise with my friends.” Luana Anne Christiana Ivan Architecture BA(Hons)

Undergraduate study An undergraduate degree from the University of Huddersfield could help you take your first steps into an exciting career. You can choose to study a subject that you are interested in from a wide variety of degrees.

Most of our courses offer placement years, giving you the chance to get out in the real world and experience employment while you’re still studying. Classes take place during the daytime and, for some courses, in the evening. Bachelor’s degree A full-time Bachelor’s degree normally takes three years. Lots of our degrees also give you the chance to take a placement or ‘sandwich’ year to build up your work experience. That would mean that your course would usually take four years in total. Upon successful completion, you’ll achieve a qualification title: Bachelor of Arts – BA(Hons) Bachelor of Engineering – BEng(Hons) Bachelor of Law – LLB Bachelor of Music – BMus(Hons) Bachelor of Science – BSc(Hons)

56

Top-up If you’ve already got a Foundation degree or a qualification like an HND, then a Top-up course gives you the chance to build on that and study for a full Honours level degree. It takes just a year full-time and it is subject to you meeting the entry criteria.

Integrated Master’s degree An Integrated Master’s degree gives you the opportunity to combine undergraduate and postgraduate study for some courses. Courses last four years, or five years if you spend a year on a placement. The first two years are normally the same as the equivalent BSc or BEng course. You’ll be expected to do well in your first two years and then move on to specialise in subject areas that particularly interest you. At the end of the course you’ll earn a Master’s level degree. We offer a range to choose from: Master of Engineering – MEng Master of Chemistry – MChem Master of Computing – MComp Master of Science – MSci Master of Pharmacy – MPharm

Whether you’re looking to continue on from undergraduate level studies or build up specialist knowledge and new skills, we offer a whole range of postgraduate programmes to ensure you achieve your goals.

As part of our vibrant postgraduate community you’ll have plenty of opportunity to network and build friendships. Taught degrees On a taught postgraduate degree, you’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical work. Studying at Master’s level will involve completing advanced specialist study in a particular subject or profession and usually contains a taught element as well as a supervised dissertation or research project.

Research degrees On a postgraduate research degree, you’ll work independently on a research topic of your own choice. You’ll be assigned a minimum of one main supervisor, who’ll be engaged in research in the relevant discipline(s) to ensure that the direction and monitoring of your progress is informed by up-to-date knowledge and developments. You’ll also receive support from skills tutors and support groups.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate study

Postgraduate study

Our research projects database enables you to search our research degrees and find specific research projects associated with that degree. Discover more at research.hud.ac.uk

Fitting studies around you Most of our taught postgraduate degrees and all of our research degrees can be studied full-time or part-time and some courses offer distance learning. You can also consider undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma; these qualifications are steps toward a Master’s degree, are internationally recognised and can be built upon in the future. If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK you will not be able to study part-time with this visa. However, if you have another type of visa that permits study in the UK, part-time study may be possible for you.

Professional Practice route Some postgraduate degrees also offer the opportunity to undertake an additional 6month placement at the end of the 12-month programme. This ‘Professional Practice’ route enables students with limited experience to put the skills and techniques developed throughout the Master’s degree into practice.

Fashion and Textiles

You need to know...

We have instigated and hosted ground-breaking conferences that address areas such as textile innovation and creative pattern cutting. These events have attracted global delegates, giving them the opportunity to present their research and greatly enhancing the experience of our students. We have built a new home for the study of Art, Design and Architecture at the University. The Barbara Hepworth Building, named after the famous West Yorkshire-born sculptor, has its main frontage overlooking the picturesque Huddersfield Narrow Canal that runs through the heart of the University’s campus. As the centre of vibrant and dynamic creativity at the University, the Barbara Hepworth Building fosters intellectual and creative exchange between different disciplines and allows Fashion and Textile students to collaborate and forge new ideas with students of other courses. Previous placements from this subject area include Dr Martens, Karl Lagerfeld, Paul Smith, and Anthropologie.

“My favorite memory of the University is probably just all of the time I spent in the construction workrooms. The energy in the room was always really upbeat and there was a great sense of community. There was a lot of frantic sewing, coming together to solve problems and just a lot of good times.” Gabriella DiGregorio Costume with Textiles BA(Hons)

Real-world experience

The UK’s only University where all our permanent teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.*

Are you interested in understanding the physical world we inhabit and the social structures we have developed to occupy specific spaces? Do you want to make a valuable contribution to solving many of the problems facing contemporary society? So how do we define geography? Well, it essentially deals with people living in a place, who exploit a specific space. Geographers not only help us to understand the physical world we inhabit, and the social structures we have developed to occupy specific spaces, they also make a valuable contribution to solving many of the problems facing society today. If all this makes your world turn then our Geography degrees here at the University of Huddersfield could be the first vital step into a career in sectors such as central and local government, education, environmental consultancies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or the commercial sector.

Geography

You need to know... Field trips are embedded into all of our Geography degree courses.

Graduates can consider roles such as Cartographers, Data Analysts, Environmental Managers and Consultants, Planners, Policy Advisors, Quality Managers and Researchers. At the University of Huddersfield we offer three different, but interrelated, degrees in geography that are underpinned by the principles of sustainability, particularly the concept of planetary boundaries. Our Geography degrees aim to stimulate your curiosities and position you for a wide range of career choices. Depending on where your interests lie, there’s Geography BSc(Hons), which combines elements of human and physical geography, Human Geography BSc(Hons), which focuses on how society has evolved to exploit spaces or Physical Geography BSc(Hons), which specialises in the physical world we inhabit. *Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.

“Our Geography degrees will challenge you to investigate and debate many of the most important issues facing societies in the 21st Century. In doing this, you will develop the knowledge and applied skills required for a wide range of employment and postgraduate opportunities.” Dr Ryan Wilson Senior Lecturer

Placements

Accreditation

Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offer the opportunity to undertake a placement and gain real-world experience.

Most of our undergraduate courses in this subject area are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).*

Our Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain Management courses aim to give you a thorough understanding of the commercial activity of transporting goods to customers and passengers to their chosen destination. Within a business context, it is now recognised that one of the main ways in which competitive advantage is gained, is through the effective and efficient management of the supply chain. This refers to the flow of products or services from their point of origin through to the final point of sale or use. In today’s globalised and digitalised business environment, managing operations, logistics and the supply chain faces a number of challenges. It is an essential function within organisations to ensure goods and services make it to their destinations across the globe.

Within this subject area, you can learn the skills that ensure business operations run more efficiently and effectively, across a global market. Our postgraduate degrees also offer the opportunity to undertake an additional 6-month placement at the end of the 12-month programme. This ‘Professional Practice’ route enables students with limited experience to put the skills and techniques developed throughout the Master’s degree into practice.

Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain Management

You need to know...

Our courses are structured around core subjects such as finance, economics, HR management, marketing and strategic management. You can choose from a number of courses covering key areas in this dynamic sector. We encourage all our students to undertake a placement year in industry with support from our dedicated Placement Unit.

A degree in Mathematics opens the door to a wide range of interesting and exciting careers. Mathematicians’ ability to reason logically, to develop quantitative models and to extract information from data means their skillset is valued everywhere. Mathematicians are needed in the aerospace, social media, pharmaceutical, finance and electronics industries - to name just a few of the sectors eager to employ mathematically qualified graduates. The Huddersfield degree focuses on the mathematics you’ll need to solve real world problems using mathematical modelling, statistics and computing. We look at calculus from the basics and underlying theory all the way through to the partial differential equations used to model flowing water and financial instruments.

Mathematics

You need to know...

Statistics is covered from basic probability to the frontiers of Big Data. We also include a healthy dose of numerical computing so you are able to use mathematical software and write programs making use of the techniques you’ve learned. As well as the technical skills needed, we also offer modules where you work in groups to solve real world problems. This allows you to develop experience in project management and teamwork skills. More importantly it introduces you to the creative side of mathematics, developing new models and new techniques and explaining what you’ve done to a non-technical audience. After your second year you’ll have the opportunity to take a placement year, putting into practice the techniques you’ve learnt. Our dedicated Placement Unit has links with companies in the UK, Europe and beyond. *Higher Education Statistics Agency 2017.

“As with many academics I love the “aha” moment when a student gets a concept. I also enjoy it when students are learning a new mathematical technique and ask me what they will ever use it for; that’s a great excuse to talk about some of the work I’ve done with industry and explain how differential equations can be used to model coffee brewing, or how integrals can be used to describe the molding of contact lenses.” Professor William Lee Industrial Mathematics

Given the complexity of multinational business in today’s dynamic environment, it’s crucial for organisations to consider the execution and strategic importance of marketing and communication, which can breakthrough complex challenges related to business or organisations. Marketing a product or service requires analysis, vision and logic. It’s one of the more creative areas of business, enabling you to build your understanding of consumers, organisations, markets and the most effective techniques and strategies to make your organisation or brand a success. Marketers have always fought to gain their customers attention. As brands and organisations try to capture customers from across the world, understanding internal and external factors, implementing strategy and choosing the right media channels to captivate your audience needs to be considered on a global scale.

100%

The University is investing £18.2m in new science facilities and laboratories for Applied Science students, opening in Autumn 2019.

100% of our Pharmacy graduates go on to work and/or further study within six months of graduating.*

At Huddersfield, we know that studying science goes way beyond the lab. So if you love solving problems, enjoy helping people and want to boost your science know-how with a view to a health-related career, then Pharmacy could be for you. Accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), our MPharm degree is designed to offer a varied learning experience while giving you the chance to gain a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences. So by studying with us, you’ll be able to combine the theory of science with developing and trying out the practical and professional skills you’ll need to launch your career. Throughout this four-year course, you’ll be focusing firmly on medicines and patients. As you progress, you’ll have the chance to get to grips with all aspects of the industry, from understanding the development and design of drugs to investigating the role of pharmacists in society. While you’re here, you’ll be able to work in our formulation laboratory where medicines are made.

Pharmacy

You need to know...

Beyond the lab, we also help you build your understanding of how the work you do will have a real impact on people. Should you wish to pursue postgraduate studies, then the Pharmaceutical Business MSc or Pharmacy Practice MSc courses may be of interest. The Pharmaceutical Business MSc suite offers two MSc courses integrating pharmaceutical sciences with business strategy. You’ll have the opportunity to learn the processes involved in discovering a new drug or developing a new formulation and incorporated business strategies. We have three MSc courses within the Pharmacy Practice suite, which provide an overview and experience of pharmacy practice within the UK, with routes specialising in community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy and pharmacy practice research. The degrees offer a unique blend of knowledge and training with practical experience in popular career pathways in the pharmacy profession: community and hospital pharmacy and academia. *The Guardian University League Tables 2020.

“ I was attracted by the University’s good reputation in pharmaceutical science. In addition to satisfying my scientific needs, I find the support is excellent and the University is a friendly international environment.” Nihad Mawla PhD (Pharmaceutical Sciences)

Applying to Huddersfield

Applying to Huddersfield We accept a wide range of international qualifications and when you apply for a place, your application will be examined and an offer will be made to you subject to meeting University entry requirements. This will be confirmed by email and on MyHud, which is your personal applicant portal. You will be provided with full details for MyHud once you submit your application. English Language Skills

Portfolio

For students whose first language is not English, the University requires a recognised qualification in English language before you can begin the course.

If you are applying for an Art, Design and Architecture degree, you must submit a portfolio to demonstrate your artistic ability. You must also provide a portfolio/audition if you are applying for a Music degree to demonstrate your performance or musical ability. Acceptable English Language qualifications The qualification the University normally requires is an IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent. Please note that some courses require a higher level of English, therefore please see the specific course details at courses.hud.ac.uk What if I don’t meet these entry requirements? We appreciate that when you submit your application you may not have taken an English Language test, or if you have, it may not be to the level we require. The University therefore provides a wide range of Pre-Sessional English Programmes, which will prepare you for your degree studies, and enable you to meet the language requirements for your chosen degree. Please see page 52 of the prospectus or visit hud.ac.uk/international

ATAS Postgraduate students may have to obtain ‘ATAS Clearance’ before applying for a student visa. This will be made a condition of the offer and full details will also be included. Full details can also be found at gov.uk/guidance/find-outif-you-require-an-atas-certificate

Important information This prospectus was prepared in the summer of 2019 for courses starting in September 2020 and January 2021 and is up to date as at the date of publication. Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website courses.hud.ac.uk and you should check our website for the latest information before you apply. Changes to your course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year. Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part-time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

124

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment. Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Equal opportunities

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

The University of Huddersfield is an equal opportunities institution. We aim to create conditions where staff and students are treated solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential, regardless of gender, age, race, caste, class, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, family responsibility, trade union activity, political or religious belief, or age. Please visit our website to see our Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy hud.ac/d3d

Our agreement with you When you enrol as a student of the University, your study and time with us will be governed by a framework of regulations, policies and procedures, which form the basis of your agreement with us. Details of these, together with information regarding tuition fees and any applicable additional charges can be accessed from hud.ac.uk/international You should read these carefully before you enrol. Please note that this information is subject to change and you are advised to check our website regularly for any changes before you enrol at the University. A person who is not party to this agreement shall not have any rights under or in connection with it. Only you and the University shall have any right to enforce or rely on the agreement.
