Inspiring teaching What better way to demonstrate first class teaching than by speaking to our students and one of our award-winning academics? Senior Lecturer in English Literature Dr Todd Borlik – who was born in Indianapolis, USA – loves teaching in the UK and at the University of Huddersfield.

English Literature BA(Hons) student Aaisha Raja agrees. “Todd’s a great teacher in many ways, but one of them is his ability to really make his subject matter relevant,” she said.

Having previously taught at the University of Washington and Bloomsburg University, Todd likes how well the UK education system enables teachers to get to know their students, and believes his teaching has been enhanced as a result.

Adapting teaching to the needs of students

“Perhaps the most important thing a teacher can do is to radiate conviction in the significance of the subject,” believes Todd.

Todd’s passion and enthusiasm for his subject is clearly infectious. “I wear my enthusiasm for Shakespeare on my sleeve,” he said. Aaisha added: “Todd is incredibly engaging – he has the ability to interest everyone in the subject that he lectures about.”

“Students learn in different ways and I adapt my teaching methods because of this,” says Todd. Todd describes how his approach to teaching has been shaped by his students: “In response to conversations with BAME (black, Asian, and minority ethnic) students at Huddersfield, I developed a module titled ‘Global Shakespeares’, which surveys the vibrant history of Shakespearean adaptation across cultures all over the world.” The module was met with such enthusiasm from students that it won a ‘Diversity Prize for Curriculum Innovation at the University.’ Todd says of the award, “It was indisputably one of the highlights of my teaching career.”

Inspiring student Sushmita Gudimella Computer Science BSc(Hons)

Meet Sushmita, who is originally from Hyderabad in Southern India, and came to Huddersfield to study a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. As part of her degree course at Huddersfield, Sushmita undertook a year-long work placement with aerospace giant Airbus. “One of the main reasons that I applied to Huddersfield was the opportunity to do a placement year in industry. The chances of getting a job are high when you do a placement in the UK, and the Placement Unit at the University helped me to prepare my CV, cover letter, and practice for assessment centres and interviews. During my placement at Airbus, I worked in the Information and Communications Technology department as an Information Management Intern. I worked on software tools which were used to design parts of an aircraft. My key responsibilities were to fix bugs in the software tools or framework and enhance existing tools, manage all the licenses, lead adaptive maintenance of software and I produced monthly reports. I also performed weekly tests on all the software tools to ensure everything was working as it should. I worked on four major projects at Airbus, which included a software tool for designing the ribs present in the wings of an aircraft, and a tool to design the fuel tank. Both of these software tools were really complicated and they were integrated with a computer-aided design tool called CATIA. These projects really stand out to me as I had an opportunity to take a prototype tool all the way to a production ready standard. I also got the chance to be involved in every stage of the software design and development life cycle.

All the projects I worked on have helped me to develop my technical and interpersonal skills. On my placement, my role was completely based on Python programming language, which I was able to learn and implement in my final year project when I returned to University, which was a collaborative project with Airbus. At the end of my placement, based on my performance, I was nominated for the graduate scheme by my manager. I had to have an interview at the end of my placement and I was offered a graduate role at Airbus, which begins a few weeks after I graduate. The best thing about doing my placement year was the personal development I can see in myself. I have definitely gained immense technical skills, and whilst I used to be afraid to voice my opinions, I can now see a great change in myself. I recently attended a placement session to help second year students at the University, and I could discuss my experience and opinions with great confidence. I think this is one of the best things I’ve gained from my placement.”

Emmanuel Haruna Education Officer July 2018 - July 2019 Students’ Union President July 2019 Huddersfield Students’ Union Emmanuel Haruna came to the University of Huddersfield to study a Master’s degree in Oil and Gas Engineering with Management. During this time, he became involved with the Students’ Union, running for a paid sabbatical position as the Education Officer. “My first contact with the Students’ Union was when I was acting as an academic representative for my course. Only one year after I arrived in the UK, I saw the opportunity to give back to the system that had positively contributed to my development, so I took part in the Students’ Union elections and was elected as Education Officer.

As Education Officer, I worked on a peer mentoring project to increase the availability of peer to peer support across campus. I have also raised over £1,500 for local charities, and worked on a policy review and amendment to improve students’ academic experience, which I have been particularly happy to see implemented across the University.

Why Huddersfield?

Inspiring student I have had the opportunity to work with academics across campus on various projects. These have included sitting on decision making committees that look at student experience and academic matters, organising school and district wide music concerts with the Christian students’ community and also working with students from over 100 countries on a variety of projects. I have met and discussed topics with Members of Parliament and councillors from the local council in Huddersfield, and worked with the Mayor of the Huddersfield district. I feel I still have so much to give back to the community. Working with students, and seeing the help and support they gained from my work, contributed to my decision to continue with the Students’ Union, and I was recently elected as the President of the Students’ Union. I am really looking forward to continuing this chapter of my time here at Huddersfield. The truth is, the opportunities here are endless and I am happy I chose to study in Huddersfield. However busy you are with studies, find the time to get involved with a society or representing other students, as these are the things that really help you develop and grow as a person.”

The Huddersfield Graduate Programme The University of Huddersfield is dedicated to developing employable graduates with ‘hands on’ industry experience. The Huddersfield Graduate Programme provides students with the opportunity to gain transferable skills with local businesses to enhance CVs and give our graduates that competitive edge.

Not only do our internships help put theoretical knowledge into practice, they are exclusive to our graduates, who we support through the application process. This includes advice on checking cover letters, CVs and arranging mock interviews to ensure graduates are fully prepared and confident when applying for graduate jobs. Our internships are paid roles, in a range of sectors from marketing and web design, to journalism and HR. The internships run for 10 weeks and provide a solid foundation for a successful career after graduation. “All students have the same access to resources but we understand that some international students have additional requirements. We help them with their career direction, offer employer-led workshops and help them understand the UK market. We also assist students with finding part-time work and talk about the importance of developing themselves as global professionals. For me it’s all about helping students to take control of their own careers; whether that’s through using our online resources to identify potential employers they might want to work for, or getting individual support with developing a personal strategy for career success. It could also be learning more about what employers look for and then signing up for activities so they can gain new skills.”

The Enterprise Team The Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Enterprise Team provides free support to current students and graduates of up to five years who are exploring freelancing, self-employment and business start-up.

The type of business support offered to international students and graduates is determined by the specific visa which each individual holds. Most international students and graduates will be eligible for generic business information through the Enterprise Workshops, which run during the autumn and spring terms. Find out more at hud.ac.uk/enterprise The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre is home to the Enterprise Team at Huddersfield. This ÂŁ12 million building was opened in 2013 and is a unique place that encourages new businesses to get off the ground.

Start-Up Visa Non-EEA international graduates of the University of Huddersfield are potentially eligible to apply for the new Start-Up Visa scheme which replaces the Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) scheme. The Start-Up Visa offers an opportunity to start up a new business in the UK. This route is open for graduates of the University of Huddersfield who wish to develop an innovative and viable business idea which meets the current UKVI requirements for the scheme. The rigorous application process must be endorsed by the University before a graduate can apply for a visa for two years. The scheme is run by the Enterprise Team working in partnership with the International Office. NonEEA graduates and current international students are advised to contact the International Office for initial advice and to confirm eligibility of their current immigration status for potential transfer into the Start-Up Visa scheme.

Sandy, a highly qualified and experienced professional, is on the Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) Visa programme, predecessor to the Start-Up Visa programme. She provides integrated and practical risk management solutions to UK businesses, helping them access and grow in the Chinese market. She also helps them reduce business risks and improve efficiency. “I have 14 years’ occupational health, safety and environmental management experience in leading global companies. I completed my Master’s by Research in Safety Culture at the University of Huddersfield in 2016 and started up Horizon Risk Consultancy Ltd in January 2017 to support UK businesses.

From the initial discussion about my business idea, the Enterprise Team offered me tremendous support and guidance including one-to-one business advice, help with business plans, business coaching and quarterly meetings to periodically review my progress. The Enterprise Workshops equipped me with essential knowledge around legal issues, accounting, insurance, branding, public relations, sales and marketing and social media. I also had access to free state-of-the-art office space and facilities in The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre which enabled me to work more efficiently.

1. Barbara Hepworth Building Opened 2019 This is the £30m new home for the study of art, design and architecture at the University. An exciting hub of creative studios and technology facilities, it brings digital and physical innovation together in one space.

The Library We like it when stuff just works and we’re pretty sure you do too. We believe equipment and systems should be simple so everyone is able to use them. It’s why you’ll have a single login for WiFi (which you can use anywhere on campus), an email account and all the software you’ll need for your course.

The Library is open seven days a week during term time and 24-hours a day for most of the year, plus our computer lab is open 24-hours a day all year round.

You’ll also have loads of storage for your work – on and off campus.

So what do our current students think of it all? Well, in the 2019 National Student Satisfaction (NSS) survey, their satisfaction with the Library was above average when compared to other universities. In fact, our students gave us a 92% satisfaction rating.

Accommodation Ashenhurst Houses If you’re looking for house style living with no fuss then Ashenhurst Houses is the place for you. There are a total of 280 bedrooms making it small enough to see a friendly face but large enough to make new friends. Each house has a shared kitchen and bathroom but you’ll get your own bedroom. International Study Centre The International Study Centre (ISC) offers English language and academic preparation for international students who do not currently meet the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s direct entry requirements. ISC students are made to feel a part of the University community from the day they arrive in Huddersfield. The centre is situated at the heart of the Huddersfield town centre campus where ISC students can enjoy the same facilities and accommodation as other students at the University. On successful completion of your preparation programme you will progress automatically onto your chosen degree course without having to apply again.

International Year One The International Year One (IY1) is an advanced course of study equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree. The course has been carefully designed for students who are overqualified for a Foundation Year but underqualified for direct entry to the first year of an undergraduate degree.

Pre-Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Programme The Pre-Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Programme (PMP) is a 12-week programme that will provide you with the necessary English language and study skills to succeed in a range of business-related postgraduate degrees at the University.

International Foundation Year The International Foundation Year (IFY) is a specially designed programme that provides a direct path to undergraduate degree study at the University of Huddersfield. The programme allows you to progress to a variety of degrees at the University. There are four routes available: Art, Media and Architecture Business, Management and Law Engineering, Computing and Science Health and Human Sciences.

Successful completion of the programme guarantees you direct entry to the second year of your chosen undergraduate degree. There are two routes available: Business, Management and Marketing Engineering and Computer Science.

A strong emphasis is placed on the British postgraduate educational system and the requirement for independent study. There is one route available: Business, Management and Marketing.

Improve your English English Language Preparation If you require additional language training before you start your International Foundation Year, you can join the English Language Preparation programme. There are two English Language Preparation options for entry to the International Foundation Year: 12-week English Language Preparation: Academic IELTS for UKVI of 4.0 (4.0 in all components) 24-week English Language Preparation: Academic IELTS for UKVI of 3.5 (3.5 in all components). Pre-Sessional English International Year One and Pre-Master’s Programme students can join a Pre-Sessional English programme. Undergraduate study An undergraduate degree from the University of Huddersfield could help you take your first steps into an exciting career. You can choose to study a subject that you are interested in from a wide variety of degrees.

Most of our courses offer placement years, giving you the chance to get out in the real world and experience employment while you’re still studying. Classes take place during the daytime and, for some courses, in the evening. Bachelor’s degree A full-time Bachelor’s degree normally takes three years. Lots of our degrees also give you the chance to take a placement or ‘sandwich’ year to build up your work experience. That would mean that your course would usually take four years in total. Upon successful completion, you’ll achieve a qualification title: Bachelor of Arts – BA(Hons) Bachelor of Engineering – BEng(Hons) Bachelor of Law – LLB Bachelor of Music – BMus(Hons) Bachelor of Science – BSc(Hons)

Top-up If you’ve already got a Foundation degree or a qualification like an HND, then a Top-up course gives you the chance to build on that and study for a full Honours level degree. It takes just a year full-time and it is subject to you meeting the entry criteria.

Integrated Master’s degree An Integrated Master’s degree gives you the opportunity to combine undergraduate and postgraduate study for some courses. Courses last four years, or five years if you spend a year on a placement. The first two years are normally the same as the equivalent BSc or BEng course. You’ll be expected to do well in your first two years and then move on to specialise in subject areas that particularly interest you. At the end of the course you’ll earn a Master’s level degree. Research degrees On a postgraduate research degree, you’ll work independently on a research topic of your own choice. You’ll be assigned a minimum of one main supervisor, who’ll be engaged in research in the relevant discipline(s) to ensure that the direction and monitoring of your progress is informed by up-to-date knowledge and developments. Fitting studies around you Most of our taught postgraduate degrees and all of our research degrees can be studied full-time or part-time and some courses offer distance learning. You can also consider undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma; these qualifications are steps toward a Master’s degree, are internationally recognised and can be built upon in the future. If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK you will not be able to study part-time with this visa. However, if you have another type of visa that permits study in the UK, part-time study may be possible for you.

Professional Practice route Some postgraduate degrees also offer the opportunity to undertake an additional 6month placement at the end of the 12-month programme. Ground-breaking cancer research Dr Nikolaos Georgopoulos, a specialist in cancer research, and his team are the first to arrive at a deep understanding of a molecule that destroys cancerous tumours without harming healthy cell tissue. At Huddersfield, we are well known for the applied focus of our research and we are proud of our reputation for quality in both teaching and research. English Language and Linguistics degrees focus on language as a system and how humans use it in everyday life. From analysing conversation to examining child language acquisition, or examining forensic applications of language knowledge, our courses offer a wide range of modules. We also include a healthy dose of numerical computing so you are able to use mathematical software and write programs making use of the techniques you’ve learned. Applying to Huddersfield We accept a wide range of international qualifications and when you apply for a place, your application will be examined and an offer will be made to you subject to meeting University entry requirements. This will be confirmed by email and on MyHud, which is your personal applicant portal. You will be provided with full details for MyHud once you submit your application. English Language Skills

Portfolio

For students whose first language is not English, the University requires a recognised qualification in English language before you can begin the course.

If you are applying for an Art, Design and Architecture degree, you must submit a portfolio to demonstrate your artistic ability. You must also provide a portfolio/audition if you are applying for a Music degree to demonstrate your performance or musical ability. You can still apply without a portfolio/audition, however this will be added as a condition of the offer.

Acceptable English Language qualifications The qualification the University normally requires is an IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent. Please note that some courses require a higher level of English, therefore please see the specific course details at courses.hud.ac.uk What if I don’t meet these entry requirements? We appreciate that when you submit your application you may not have taken an English Language test, or if you have, it may not be to the level we require. The University therefore provides a wide range of Pre-Sessional English Programmes, which will prepare you for your degree studies, and enable you to meet the language requirements for your chosen degree. Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year. Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part-time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment. Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Equal opportunities

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University.
