Meet just some of our inspiring academic staff here to help you thrive, plus find out about some of the incredible placement opportunities our students take on to help support their future careers.

Teaching excellence We’re recognised as a centre of teaching excellence. Here are just some of the reasons why. Our professionalism extends way beyond the confines of the campus. As a result, you’ll find that many of our courses have been recognised or accredited by external professional bodies.

WE’RE JOINT FIRST IN ENGLAND FOR THE PROPORTION OF STAFF WITH TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS (HESA 2019)

06

We’re joint first in England for the proportion of staff with teaching qualifications (HESA 2019). Just under 95% of our academic staff hold an appropriate teaching qualification. We are one of the four leading institutions in the UK for National Teaching Fellowships, winning a total of fifteen since 2008*. Think of them like the teaching Oscars – they rate the UK’s best lecturers. It’s part of our ongoing drive for teaching excellence, which helps you achieve great things too. We’re the first and only UK university where 100% of permanent teaching staff** are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. So you’ll learn from some of the best, helping you be the best. *2019 data. **Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.

We also offer a whole range of specialist support to ensure you get the most out of your studies including academic and professional support.”

Jodie Boyd Senior Lecturer in Career Guidance and Development

Why Huddersfield?

“By choosing to study at the University of Huddersfield you’ll benefit from a hugely experienced teaching team. You will be taught by staff who are at the forefront of their subject area as all permanent staff have, or are completing, doctorates. Meaning you will benefit from research informed teaching delivered by experts in their field.

Gain real industry experience Placements are a key part of courses at Huddersfield. We know how much employers value graduates who have real-world experience, and that’s why we encourage our students to make the most of the opportunities available. We asked Sushmita, one of our Computer Science students originally from Hyderabad, Southern India, to tell us about her placement year with aerospace giant Airbus.

At the end of my placement, based on my performance, I was nominated for the graduate scheme by my manager. I had an interview at the end of my placement and I was offered a graduate role at Airbus.

“One of the main reasons that I applied to Huddersfield was the opportunity to do a placement year in industry. The chances of getting a job are high when you do a placement in the UK, and the Placement Unit at the University helped me to prepare my CV, cover letter, and practice for assessment centres and interviews.

The best thing about doing my placement year was the personal development I can see in myself. I have definitely gained immense technical skills, and whilst I used to be afraid to voice my opinions, I can now see a great change in myself. I recently attended a placement session to help second year students at the University, and I could discuss my experience and opinions with great confidence. This is one of the best things I’ve gained from my placement.”

During my placement at Airbus, I worked in the Information and Communications Technology department as an Information Management Intern. I worked on software tools which were used to design parts of an aircraft. I worked on four major projects at Airbus, which included a software tool for designing the ribs present in the wings of an aircraft, and a tool to design the fuel tank. Both of these software tools were really complicated and they were integrated with a computer-aided design tool called CATIA. All the projects I worked on have helped me to develop my technical and interpersonal skills. On my placement, my role was completely based on Python programming language, which I was able to learn and implement in my final year project when I returned to University, which was a collaborative project with Airbus.

Undergraduate study An undergraduate degree from the University of Huddersfield could help you take your first steps into an exciting career. You can choose to study a subject that you are interested in from a wide variety of degrees.

Most of our courses offer placement years, giving you the chance to get out in the real world and experience employment while you’re still studying. Classes take place during the daytime and, for some courses, in the evening.

Bachelor’s degree A full-time Bachelor’s degree normally takes three years. Lots of our degrees also give you the chance to take a placement or ‘sandwich’ year to build up your work experience. That would mean that your course would usually take four years in total. Upon successful completion, you’ll achieve a qualification title: Bachelor of Arts – BA(Hons) Bachelor of Engineering – BEng(Hons) Bachelor of Law – LLB Bachelor of Music – BMus(Hons) Bachelor of Science – BSc(Hons)

Top-up If you’ve already got a Foundation degree or a qualification like an HND, then a Top-up course gives you the chance to build on that and study for a full Honours level degree. It takes just a year full-time and it is subject to you meeting the entry criteria.

Integrated Master’s degree An Integrated Master’s degree gives you the opportunity to combine undergraduate and postgraduate study for some courses. Courses last four years, or five years if you spend a year on a placement. The first two years are normally the same as the equivalent BSc or BEng course. You’ll be expected to do well in your first two years and then move on to specialise in subject areas that particularly interest you. At the end of the course you’ll earn a Master’s level degree. We offer a range to choose from: Master of Engineering – MEng Master of Chemistry – MChem Master of Computing – MComp Master of Science – MSci Master of Pharmacy – MPharm

48

Whether you’re looking to continue on from undergraduate level studies or build up specialist knowledge and new skills, we offer a whole range of postgraduate programmes to ensure you achieve your goals.

As part of our vibrant postgraduate community you’ll have plenty of opportunity to network and build friendships.

Our research projects database enables you to search our research degrees and find specific research projects associated with that degree.

Taught degrees

Discover more at research.hud.ac.uk

On a taught postgraduate degree, you’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical work.

Fitting studies around you

Studying at Master’s level will involve completing advanced specialist study in a particular subject or profession and usually contains a taught element as well as a supervised dissertation or research project.

Research degrees On a postgraduate research degree, you’ll work independently on a research topic of your own choice. You’ll be assigned a minimum of one main supervisor, who’ll be engaged in research in the relevant discipline(s) to ensure that the direction and monitoring of your progress is informed by up-to-date knowledge and developments. You’ll also receive support from skills tutors and support groups.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate study

Postgraduate study

Most of our taught postgraduate degrees and all of our research degrees can be studied full-time or part-time and some courses offer distance learning. You can also consider undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma; these qualifications are steps toward a Master’s degree, are internationally recognised and can be built upon in the future. If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK you will not be able to study part-time with this visa. However, if you have another type of visa that permits study in the UK, part-time study may be possible for you.

Professional Practice route Some postgraduate degrees also offer the opportunity to undertake an additional 6month placement at the end of the 12-month programme. This ‘Professional Practice’ route enables students with limited experience to put the skills and techniques developed throughout the Master’s degree into practice.

Our research in action Our research changes lives. We’re committed to solving the problems and answering the questions posed by industry, science and society as a whole. Join our inspiring research community to make your mark on the world we live in. Here are four ways our international researchers are making a difference.

Fighting wildlife crime in Malaysia Criminals in Malaysia are endangering the region’s diverse wildlife. Wildlife crime is affecting the states of Sabah and Sarawak in particular, with prized wildlife dwindling in part due to the illegal international wildlife trade. Green criminologist Dr Melanie Flynn has worked with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Malaysia to introduce sentencing guidelines, which will help judges to deal more effectively with wildlife criminals. 54

Degradation of tropical rainforests is causing devastating losses of biodiversity and destroys the livelihoods of forest-using communities. A research team, led by Professor Adrian Wood, has been conducting action research in Ethiopia to enable communities to manage over 400,000 hectares of forest. As a result, they have almost halted forest loss and maintained biodiversity, as well as improved livelihoods.

Our research in action

Giving communities the right to manage their forests

Sustainable farming in action

Working with health workers in Zambia

Empowering mothers and health workers to reduce mortality Infant and maternal mortality and morbidity are of significant concern in Zambia, which has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world. Researchers Professor Barry Doyle and Dr James Reid have worked with communities in the area to introduce zero-cost interventions to support mothers. By adopting a sustainable approach, using minimal resources, their aim is to achieve a positive impact on infant and maternal mortality.

Maize harvest in Malawi

Changing the landscape of farming in Malawi The use of traditional farming methods in Malawi has resulted in declining crop yields due to factors including poor soil quality, soil erosion and the effects of climate change. Dr Emma Ransom-Jones visited Malawi to collect data that will provide a comprehensive overview of an alternative deep-bed farming method that will potentially benefit the local community and help other countries affected by drought.

Are you interested in understanding the physical world we inhabit and the social structures we have developed to occupy specific spaces? Well, it essentially deals with people living in a place, who exploit a specific space. Geographers not only help us to understand the physical world we inhabit, and the social structures we have developed to occupy specific spaces, they also make a valuable contribution to solving many of the problems facing society today. If all this makes your world turn then our Geography degrees here at the University of Huddersfield could be the first vital step into a career in sectors such as central and local government, education, environmental consultancies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or the commercial sector.

Depending on where your interests lie, there’s Geography BSc(Hons), which combines elements of human and physical geography, Human Geography BSc(Hons), which focuses on how society has evolved to exploit spaces or Physical Geography BSc(Hons), which specialises in the physical world we inhabit. *Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.

“Our Geography degrees will challenge you to investigate and debate many of the most important issues facing societies in the 21st Century. In doing this, you will develop the knowledge and applied skills required for a wide range of employment and postgraduate opportunities.” Dr Ryan Wilson Senior Lecturer

Placements

Accreditation

Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offer the opportunity to undertake a placement and gain real-world experience.

Our Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain Management courses aim to give you a thorough understanding of the commercial activity of transporting goods to customers and passengers to their chosen destination. Within a business context, it is now recognised that one of the main ways in which competitive advantage is gained, is through the effective and efficient management of the supply chain. This refers to the flow of products or services from their point of origin through to the final point of sale or use. In today’s globalised and digitalised business environment, managing operations, logistics and the supply chain faces a number of challenges. It is an essential function within organisations to ensure goods and services make it to their destinations across the globe.

Most of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses in this subject area are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).*

Within this subject area, you can learn the skills that ensure business operations run more efficiently and effectively, across a global market. Our postgraduate degrees also offer the opportunity to undertake an additional 6-month placement at the end of the 12-month programme. This ‘Professional Practice’ route enables students with limited experience to put the skills and techniques developed throughout the Master’s degree into practice.

Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain Management

You need to know...

Given the complexity of multinational business in today’s dynamic environment, it’s crucial for organisations to consider the execution and strategic importance of marketing and communication, which can break through complex challenges related to business or organisations. Undergraduate marketing students compete annually in L’Oréal’s Brandstorm and the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) “The Pitch” competition.

Strategic communication covers issues, insights and concepts shaping society and business, both now and in the future.

Important information This prospectus was prepared in the summer of 2020 for courses starting in September 2021 and January 2022 and is up to date as at the date of publication. Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website courses.hud.ac.uk and you should check our website for the latest information before you apply. Changes to your course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year. Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part-time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

120

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment. Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Equal opportunities

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

The University of Huddersfield is an equal opportunities institution. We aim to create conditions where staff and students are treated solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential, regardless of gender, age, race, caste, class, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, family responsibility, trade union activity, political or religious belief, or age. Please visit our website to see our Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy hud.ac/d3d

Our agreement with you When you enrol as a student of the University, your study and time with us will be governed by a framework of regulations, policies and procedures, which form the basis of your agreement with us. Details of these, together with information regarding tuition fees and any applicable additional charges can be accessed from hud.ac.uk/international You should read these carefully before you enrol. Please note that this information is subject to change and you are advised to check our website regularly for any changes before you enrol at the University. A person who is not party to this agreement shall not have any rights under or in connection with it. Only you and the University shall have any right to enforce or rely on the agreement.
