Real industry experience Placements are a key part of our courses at Huddersfield. We know how much employers value graduates who have real-world experience on their CV and that’s why we encourage our students to make the most of the opportunities available. We asked Hongzhang, an Air Transport and Logistics Management student from China, to share his experience of his placement at the global automotive giant, Stellantis.

“One thing that attracted me to study at Huddersfield was the fact that as a student at the university, I would have the opportunity to get work-related experience as part of my degree. I chose to undertake a year-long placement and was offered a role at Stellantis as a UK Supply Chain Planner. “Stellantis is a multi-national automotive manufacturing corporation, my role involved forecasting suppliers’ sales needs and requirements. I was responsible for liaising with suppliers in Turkey, Poland and China to ensure we had enough stock to fulfil customer demands. “I received a lot of support from the placement team in the Huddersfield Business School when I was applying for a placement. They delivered a presentation at the beginning of my second year that provided a wealth of useful information about undertaking a placement and prepared me for what to expect. “I strongly believe that doing a placement is a great opportunity for students like me to gain experience and is excellent for personal growth, for your CV and makes you more employable. “My transferable skills have improved and one of the benefits of working for a multi-national firm is that there are so many experienced colleagues that you can reach out to for help. I worked with multiple teams in many different countries, such as France, Spain and Germany, and it was a pleasure to work

with a recognised firm like Stellantis because of the professional environment. “In my final year of study at Huddersfield, the skills and knowledge I learned from my placement have helped significantly with my assignments and have given me a new understanding from the perspective of the industry. I have also been able to secure a graduate role with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). “If you’re considering a course with a placement opportunity, I would say you’re in great hands with our placement team. They’ll help you prepare your CV and do mock interviews with you when needed. You will also have access to their e-placement website where you can check the vacancies out there to help you find the perfect placement to complement your studies.” Hongzhang Guo Air Transport and Logistics Management BSc(Hons)

Meet our students If you really want to know about student life and what it’s like to live and study in Huddersfield, hear it straight from our students.

Mishti Khatri Sport Nutrition PhD “I came to the University of Huddersfield to pursue a Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Nutrition. Having lived in a big city all my life, I knew I wanted to study in a small town and get the full campus experience. “The course at Huddersfield stood out to me because of the strong balance it had between practical and theoretical study. The course leaders and academic team were excellent mentors and tutors, introducing me to a new way of learning. I was motivated to keep my grades up and work towards getting the Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship which I successfully achieved, allowing me to also study for my PhD in Sport Nutrition at Huddersfield. “As part of my PhD studies, I have had the opportunity to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students and carry out practical trials in the newly refurbished sports laboratories. My supervisors also helped me to publish my Master’s dissertation, which has definitely been the highlight of my academic career so far.”

“I have had many exciting opportunities during my time at Huddersfield. One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had was leading the Nigerian Student Society as the society President. Through this, I have improved both my leadership and communication skills, and I also gained experience in managing projects and events.

“I decided to pursue my PhD at Huddersfield after completing both my undergraduate and Master’s degrees at the University. I decided to stay at Huddersfield for a number of reasons, but mostly because of the excellent support from academic staff and the dynamic studying environment at the University.

“In addition, I’ve also had the opportunity to work part-time with Huddersfield Students’ Union as an Academic Representative Assistant. By joining societies and being actively involved with the Student’s Union, I have been able to form a network of amazing people who I know I’ll keep in touch with for many years after I graduate.

“During my time here, I have received outstanding support from not only the University staff, but also from the diverse and energetic student community.

“Most recently, I applied and was selected to become a student ambassador with UKCISA, representing international students across the UK alongside a group of students from several UK institutions, an achievement I am very proud of.”

We offer a range of study options from undergraduate courses, placement opportunities, postgraduate taught courses and postgraduate research degrees. For undergraduates Bachelor’s degree Our full-time Bachelor’s degrees normally take three years. Lots of our degrees also give you the option to take a placement or ‘sandwich’ year to build up your work experience, taking four years in total.

Courses last four years, or five years if you spend a year on a placement. The first two years are normally the same as the equivalent Bachelor’s course. At the end of the course, you’ll earn a Master’s level degree.

Top-up If you’ve already got a Foundation degree or a qualification like an HND, then a Top-up course gives you the chance to build on that and study for a full Honours level degree. It takes one year full-time and it is subject to you meeting the entry criteria.

For postgraduates on taught courses Taught degrees On a taught postgraduate degree, you’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical work. Courses usually contain a taught element as well as a supervised dissertation or research project.

Master’s courses with a placement Some of our Master’s courses also offer the opportunity to do a six-month placement. Visit page 35 to explore Master’s course options with a placement.

Research in action Our research changes lives. We’re committed to solving the problems and answering the questions posed by industry, science and society as a whole. Join our inspiring research community to make your mark on the world we live in. Here are three ways our international researchers are making a difference.

Life-saving lullabies in Zambia In Zambia in 2018, up to 15 women per week lost their lives in pregnancy due to preventable causes, and in May 2019, the country’s President declared the situation to be a public health emergency. The reasons for high maternal and infant mortality in Zambia are complex. A range of economic and social issues can be blamed, from high rates of illiteracy, the availability of clinics and the differing levels of service between rural and urban areas. Local women often acted as midwives or traditional birth attendants, but they were untrained and their practices often concerning.

Researchers from the University developed a partnership with the charity St. John Zambia to develop a zero-cost sustainable solution that could be scaled up over time. The solution they discovered was to educate women through music. Working with volunteers from Safe Motherhood Action Groups in Zambia, they created meaningful lullabies that resonated with the community and could cover a range of relevant topics around motherhood and sexual health. The project was titled ‘Life-saving lullabies’ and the team are now hoping to expand the initiative across wider Zambia and into Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Bringing mindfulness centre stage

Creating a global framework

Mindfulness is a practice which is derived from meditation traditions and supported by extensive recent science. Researchers at the University of Huddersfield have been developing a range of approaches to integrate mindfulness practice into theatrical performance training and artistic processes.

Public relations, as a profession, is going through considerable change. The number of professionals working beyond Western countries, where the practice was historically concentrated, is increasing, and for many years there was no recognised framework for benchmarking the capabilities of practitioners worldwide.

The team were able to engage with theatre practitioners from eleven countries and worked closely with leading international practitioners. Looking at how both contemporary and historical figures used mindfulness, they identified that some theatre practices have their roots in Buddhist meditation.

At the request of the United Nations Global Alliance, researchers from the Huddersfield Business School directed a project to devise an international benchmarking framework for members of the public relations profession worldwide.

The project led to the identification of an emerging new field of practice, ‘mindfulness-based performance’. By tracing the Buddhist origin of the practices, they established performance training as a viable alternative to standard mindfulness approaches. The team has developed and created an extensive body of rich practices, artworks and critical understanding to support performance practitioners in bringing mindfulness practices into their work. They were also able to apply their research to creative performance projects which reached public audiences and artistic communities in Europe, USA, Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Brazil. Photo credit - Peter McGarry.

Working with researchers across the globe, the team produced individual frameworks for nine countries. Looking at elements of each framework, they were then able to construct an agreed Global Capability Framework (GCF). The Framework allows organisations, teams, and individuals to assess their capabilities, identify strengths and weaknesses and plan professional development to improve current and future performance. The Global Alliance officially adopted the Framework at its biennial World Public Relations Forum in April 2018, with the chair of the Global Alliance describing it as ‘a game-changer for the profession’. In addition to my studies at the University, I had the opportunity to undertake an internship with the Witt UK Group. This is a design, manufacturing and servicing company that specialises in smoke control and ventilation products and air movement solutions. My role was supporting with project handovers and assisting in the completion of project designs in time to be delivered to the business’ clients. “I came across this internship opportunity by searching the University’s Careers Service job listings. I had subscribed to this for daily notifications to alert me to new job openings.

36

Enterprise support The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre is home to the Enterprise Team at Huddersfield. It provides free support to current students and graduates of up to five years who are exploring freelancing, self-employment and business start-up. Take a look to find out more.

“The Careers Service assisted with my application as I applied to the company through them, and they supported me with the overall job offer process. The team helped me secure an extension of my internship from the initial eight weeks to 11 weeks; an extra three weeks in which I was also able to work on a full-time basis. “As a result of this internship, I have been offered a permanent role with the company, and I am excited to learn more and build on my experience.” Anjolaoluwa Ogundipe Mechanical Design Engineering MSc

Equality, diversity and inclusion A continuing commitment to equality means that all students, and staff, should have equal opportunities to reach their full potential at Huddersfield. This is supported by a number of initiatives. Here are just a few:

Race equality

Gender equality

The University has signed up to Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter which helps universities to improve the representation, progression and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students and staff within Higher Education. As part of our commitment, we are developing initiatives and solutions to improve race equality across the University.

We hold an Athena SWAN Bronze Award for gender equality. The Athena SWAN Charter is a framework used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within Higher Education and research. The Charter guides institutions on how to achieve their gender equality objectives in terms of representation, student progression, career development and the working environment.

LGBTQ+

Make a change!

The vibrant colours of the LGBTQ+ movement, proudly displayed at the entrance of the University, send out a permanent message of inclusiveness and tolerance – everyone is welcome at the University of Huddersfield. The transformed zebra crossing was unveiled during National Inclusion Week in September 2019.

The Students’ Union runs five volunteer, studentled networks that are defined and directed by their individual members. This includes the BAME Ambassadors, Disabled Students Network, Global Students Network, LGBT+ Students Network and the Women’s Network. If you’re passionate, motivated and identify with any of these networks, you could get involved to ensure that students are heard, better represented and their views are voiced from a position of authenticity.

Hi, my name is Syed and I studied for both my Bachelor’s in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and my PhD in Engineering at Huddersfield.

“I was able to take advantage of many opportunities during my seven years at the University. I enjoyed meeting people and networking, especially as a member of the Pakistani student society. “I became the course and school representative for the School of Computing and Engineering, and as a research student, I had the opportunity to attend on-campus and national conferences. “During my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate enough to secure a 12-month placement with world-leading Fuel Filtration company, Parker Hannifin. My placement introduced me to the world of automotive work, and my role at this company supported research and development activities and contributed towards a US patent. “I think the best thing about studying at Huddersfield was that from my undergraduate final year project right through to the submission of my PhD thesis, all my assignments included real-world projects that I either got through my industry placement or through industry links via my tutors.

“I am currently working in the automotive sector in the West Midlands as a Systems and Controls Engineer for EVs. I’m responsible for creating Vehicle Performance and Efficiency models. Using these simulations, I help and guide vehicle engineering teams on how they can optimise and size their vehicle design, to achieve maximum range and performance from their electric vehicles. In the future, I hope to develop and nurture my career in both an industrial and academic capacity. “I 100% feel the University has helped me shape my career. I received a lot of support with my career planning. The Placement Unit helped me to polish my CV and strengthen my interview skills. They showed me where and how to search for an employer or a job, and these are skills I still use now. “If you’re considering applying for a degree in the UK, ask as many questions as you like and don’t be shy. Look around, check the facilities, talk to current students and graduates. Look for the right sort of environment which will help you grow as a person. I loved university and I’m sure you will too!” Dr Syed Mazahir Rizvi BEng(Hons) PhD, MIET Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng(Hons) 2015 PhD Engineering 2021

Important information This guide was prepared in the spring of 2022 for courses starting in September 2023 and January 2024 and is up-to-date as at the date of publication. Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website courses.hud.ac.uk and you should check our website for the latest information before you apply.

Changes to your course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below:

> Changes to option modules Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

> Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the

services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part-time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum. For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment. Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Equal opportunities

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.
