Why the University of Huddersfield?
Inspirational teaching Inspirational teaching is hugely important at the University of Huddersfield and helps our students to achieve the highest academic standards. To recognise the value of teaching excellence, every year we ask our students which tutor deserves a Thank You Award. Meet the University’s Inspirational Teacher award winner in 2017, Dr Mark Mynett. Senior Lecturer in Music Technology and Production, Mark is well known at the University for his dedication to his students and his extensive real-world experience. He has tasted success as a professional musician, including worldwide album releases and several years of high-profile touring. A career as a self-employed record producer followed, alongside gaining his degree in Popular Music Production. More recently Mark completed his PhD, and he remains active in producing, engineering and mixing. Mark conveys a genuine passion for music of all genres, which has driven him since attending his first concert, aged 12.
Here’s what one of Mark’s students wrote on their nomination form:
Mark’s lectures are always interesting and he’s always happy to help out if you need it. He always seems enthusiastic to be with us, makes a real effort to bring good examples of media in and explains everything at a pace I can understand.

“The University of Huddersfield has given me an exceptional student experience. The atmosphere here is welcoming and relaxed. I have met a lot of people from different countries and engaged in activities that were not only entertaining, but culturally enlightening as well. “Huddersfield is a town that feels like home to everyone, regardless what part of the world they come from. There are a lot of landmarks to see and visit in and around Huddersfield. My favourite thing to do is walk around the streets and find different authentic cafés. With the number of friends that I’ve made over here, I’ve never had to witness a dull or boring day. “The teaching quality at the University is outstanding and all my lecturers have specialised in their respective areas with the theory knowledge and practical experience required in the field of events management.

“As part of my course I volunteered at various events and I had the opportunity to undertake a one-year work placement at the University as International Campus Events Coordinator. The University also took us on a field trip to Scotland during my first year of study.
One of the best moments of my University life was when I met British actor Sir Patrick Stewart and was able to have a conversation with him.
Why the University of Huddersfield?
“The best part about my placement was working with a diverse range of people from different parts of the world. With over 120 nationalities and over 60 international societies on campus, I have met some inspiring and encouraging people who I can now proudly call my friends.
“During my work placement at the International Office I’ve had a lot of support from my colleagues and I’ve had the opportunity to represent the University at pre-departure conferences and various seminars in Kuwait.”

I have learned a lot about customer support, debugging computer hardware and met amazing people who were happy to share their knowledge and experience with me. career and boosted my confidence. I came back as a different person. “Studying at the University of Huddersfield was a great experience. I always found the support I needed and met a lot of people from all around the world. “Huddersfield is always full of students. The best part of life here is the great variety of societies – anyone can find something they like or would like to learn, or even set-up their own society. The campus is at the heart of the town centre and that helped me save a lot of money on transport.
Why the University of Huddersfield?
“People in Huddersfield are friendly and always happy to help. There are plenty of study resources available and I like how everything is easily accessible online. Student voice is always heard and the recently introduced Lecture Capture System is a good example of that. “In 2018, I went on an educational visit to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center where I learned more about parallel computing. I’ve had the chance to meet people from the industry and see how things are done in practice.”
I even had a chance to provide technical support to Professor Stephen Hawking and fix his sound synthesiser.

The University’s Enterprise Team provides free support to current students and graduates of up to 5 years who are exploring freelancing, self-employment and business start-up. The type of business support offered to international students and graduates is determined by the specific visa which each individual holds.
Non–EEA international graduates of the University of Huddersfield are potentially eligible to apply for the Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Scheme, offering the opportunity to start a new business in the UK. This route is for graduates of the University of Huddersfield who wish to develop a genuine and credible business idea which meets the current guidelines as described by the Home Office for this scheme. The rigorous application process must be endorsed by the University before a graduate can apply for a visa for an initial 12 months. The scheme is run by the Enterprise Team working in partnership with the International Office. Non–EEA graduates and current international students approaching graduation are advised to contact the International Office for initial advice, and to confirm eligibility of their current visa for potential transfer into the Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Scheme.
Most international students and graduates will be eligible for generic business information through the Enterprise Workshops which run during the autumn and spring terms. Find out more at hud.ac.uk/enterprise

The process of launching an enterprise in the UK is more complex for an international graduate and can be a little daunting. For example, I could develop my interest in documentary photography while other students could build up a fashion portfolio. At the same time, we had modules related to commercial photography which meant that all of us, at the end of the course, would be able to produce commercial work while developing personal projects.
“Winning the APHE Bursary allowed me to attend the first edition of the Offspring Photo Meet in London, where I had the chance to meet key professionals within the photographic world. It was there where I had one of the first opportunities to present my documentary work. There I met people like Simon Bainbridge, Editor of the British Journal of Photography publication where my project ‘Valid for Travel’ was published in 2015. I had the chance to present this project at Look Festival in Liverpool in 2015 and to have it exhibited at New York Photo Festival and Seoul International Photo Festival in 2015. “I am currently running my own business as a photographer, while working on documentary projects and doing my PhD at the University of Huddersfield.”

The Library We like it when stuff just works and we’re pretty sure you do too. We believe equipment and systems should be simple without anyone finding it difficult to use them. It’s why you’ll have a single log-in for WiFi (which you can use anywhere on campus), email and all the software you’ll need for your course. You’ll also have storage for your work – on and off campus. So the next time you leave your memory stick on the bus you’ll still have a back up. Of course, because we keep investing in our facilities and technology, you’ll be studying in an environment that reflects what things are like in the real world too. No matter what subject you study.
Excellence Award First ever university library to gain the UK National Customer Service Excellence Award. Our Customer Service Excellence award recognises the exceptional service we offer you. From Academic Librarians to IT support, everyone is here to help.
The Library
A unique heritage archive
Our Library is pretty special. It contains over 1,000 study spaces and over 500 ultra modern PCs and Macs. And there’s a huge number of books and journal articles for you to make use of. Around 330,000 in print form and millions in digital format.
Our ‘Big Curvy Screen’ is a dynamic interface that lets you plunge into a fascinating collection of historic material. Just wave your hand and you’ll be immersed in surround-sound material and be able to browse through our collections on a seven metre long wall.
You’ll be able to find information easily via our library search engine that you can use whenever you want, wherever you want.
The ‘Big Curvy Screen’ is just one part of Heritage Quay, our purpose-built archive collection where you’ll find a huge collection of artefacts on music, sport, women’s history, politics, the arts, local industry, education and non-conformity.
The Library is open 24 hours a day for most of the academic year, and our computer lab is open 24 hours a day all year round. So what do our current students think of it all? Well, in the 2017 National Student Satisfaction (NSS) survey, their satisfaction with the Library was above average when compared to other universities. In fact our students gave us a 90% satisfaction rating. Support available includes: • Specialist subject librarians trained to help you find the information you need
You can get involved as much as you want. Perhaps just find out about something you’re interested in. Or get creative and mix it up with your coursework. There are placement opportunities at Heritage Quay too, helping you build on your skills.

Undergraduate study An undergraduate degree from the University of Huddersfield could help you take your first steps into an exciting career. You can choose to study a subject that you are interested in from a wide variety of degrees. Most of our courses offer placement years, giving you the chance to get out in the real world and experience employment while you’re still studying and make yourself more employable. You will have the opportunity to study a course that combines a couple of subjects. Classes take place during the daytime and, for some courses, in the evening. You can choose from the below types of courses at Huddersfield:
Bachelor’s degree
Integrated Master’s degree
A full-time Bachelor’s degree normally takes three years. Lots of our degrees also give you the chance to take a placement or ‘sandwich’ year to build up your work experience. That would mean that your course would usually take four years in total.
An Integrated Master’s degree gives you the opportunity to combine undergraduate and postgraduate study for some courses. This lasts four years, or five years if you spend a year on a placement. The first two years are normally the same as the equivalent BSc or BEng course.
Once you’ve graduated you’ll be able to achieve a qualification title: • Bachelor of Arts – BA(Hons) • Bachelor of Engineering – BEng(Hons) • Bachelor of Law – LLB • Bachelor of Music – BMus(Hons) • Bachelor of Science – BSc(Hons)
Top-up If you’ve already got a Foundation degree or a qualification like an HND, then a Top-up course gives you the chance to build on that and study for a full Honours level degree. It takes just a year full-time and it is subject to you meeting the entry criteria.
52
Undergraduate study
You’ll be expected to do well in your first two years and then move on to specialise in subject areas that particularly interest you. At the end of the course you’ll earn a Master’s level degree. We offer a range to choose from: • • • • • •
Master of Engineering – MEng Master of Law and Practice – MLP Master of Chemistry – MChem Master of Human Resource Management – MHRM Master of Science – MSci Master of Pharmacy – MPharm
Our courses
Postgraduate study Whether you’re looking to continue on from undergraduate level studies or build up specialist knowledge and new skills, we offer a whole range of postgraduate programmes to ensure you achieve your goals. As part of our vibrant postgraduate community of over 5,200, including taught students and researchers from nearly 100 different nationalities, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to network, build friendships and get involved.
Taught degrees On a taught postgraduate degree, you’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical work. Studying at Master’s level will involve completing advanced specialist study in a particular subject or profession and usually contains a taught element as well as a supervised dissertation or research project.
Research degrees On a postgraduate research degree, you’ll work independently on a research topic of your own choice. You’ll be assigned a minimum of one main supervisor, who’ll be engaged in research in the relevant discipline(s) to ensure that the direction and monitoring of your progress is informed by up to date knowledge and developments. You’ll also receive support from skills tutors and support groups. Our research projects database enables you to search our research degrees and find specific research projects associated with that degree. Discover more at research.hud.ac.uk
Fitting studies around you Most of our taught postgraduate degrees and all of our research degrees can be studied full-time or part-time and some courses offer distance learning. You can also consider undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma; these qualifications are steps toward a Master’s degree, are internationally recognised and can be built upon in the future. If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK you will not be able to study part-time with this visa. However, if you have another type of visa that permits study in the UK, part-time study may be possible for you. Please visit our website for more information hud.ac.uk/courses

Wildlife crimes on trial Sentences from the courts in the UK are said to be too lenient and not putting off people trading illegally in endangered species, such as the leopard. Legal expert Melanie Flynn assessed the issue for The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-UK), finding that establishing clear guidelines may help bring the kind of greater consistency and stronger sentencing that will stand a better chance of deterring the individuals and organisations who are jeopardising the future of animals under threat.
Cancer treatment breakthrough Dr Nikolaos Georgopoulos and his team of researchers have been the first to arrive at a deep understanding of a molecule that destroys cancerous tumours without harming healthy cell tissue. The discovery, which has been patented, opens the doors for a highly effective cancer treatment without the serious and unpleasant side effects that occur with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Well, it essentially deals with people living in a place, which exploits a specific space. Geographers not only help us to understand the physical world we inhabit, and the social structures we have developed to occupy specific spaces, they also make a valuable contribution to solving many of the problems facing society today. The Huddersfield BSc in Mathematics offers the perfect balance of the core skills needed for developing mathematical models, for extracting meaning from data and for programming those methods in industry standard mathematical software. There are also modules aimed at developing teamwork, problem solving and communication skills to give you the breadth of skills needed to succeed in industry. While often all you will need is a pen, some paper and your imagination, sometimes you will need access to the latest mathematical and statistical software and a high end computer to run it on. The University will provide you with access to all these as well as the support and guidance you need to get the most from your experience with us.
I’ve always been fascinated by numbers, patterns and understanding how things work which has led to my study of Mathematics and, in particular, Industrial Mathematics. This involves working with industry to use existing mathematics and develop new mathematics to address the challenges they are currently facing. I enjoy it when students are learning a new mathematical technique and ask me what they will ever use it for: that’s a great excuse to talk about some of the work I’ve done with industry.

At Huddersfield, we know that studying science goes way beyond the lab. So if you love solving problems, enjoy helping people and want to boost your science know-how with a view to a health-related career, then Pharmacy could be for you.
While you’re here, you’ll be able to work in our formulation laboratory where medicines are made. Beyond the lab, we also help you build your understanding of how the work you do will have a real impact on people. By working with prescriptions and thinking about patients right from the start, you’ll be able to focus on the end goal of your studies and prepare for scenarios you’re likely to come across as you take your first steps as a healthcare professional.
Accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), our Pharmacy MPharm degree is designed to offer a varied learning experience while giving you the chance to gain a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences. So by studying with us, you’ll be able to combine the theory of science with developing and trying out the practical and professional skills you’ll need to launch your career.
Should you wish to pursue postgraduate studies then the MSc courses may be of interest. You’ll have the opportunity to learn the processes involved in discovering a new drug and incorporated business strategies. You’ll also have the chance to study various analytical tools and techniques employed in drug discovery and, after completion of the course, will be expected to have the skills needed to start-up new businesses offering specialised services in drug discovery or join drug discovery teams within the pharmaceutical industry.
Throughout this four-year course, you’ll be focusing firmly on medicines and patients. As you progress, you’ll have the chance to get to grips with all aspects of the industry, from understanding the development and design of drugs to investigating the role of pharmacists in society.

Important information This prospectus was prepared in the summer of 2018 for courses starting in September 2019 and January 2020 and is up to date as at the date of publication. Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website courses.hud.ac.uk and you should check our website for the latest information before you apply. Changes to your course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.
Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below:
Changes to option modules Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.
Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial

change to module content, teaching days (part-time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum. For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment. Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date.
