Welcome! Read about the work of our Event Experience and Design students at the HD Festival, their launch of a large-scale event at Fort Amherst and how another student won a design commission. We want our students to be ready for work. We make links between the events industry and the University in each module. Industry leaders are invited to talk about their work and encourage students to debate current issues in the industry. In other modules, students respond to client briefs working on “real life” projects. We look forward to welcoming you to our EED family. Peter Hatton, Director of Events and Experience Design

Leah Stewart, Charlotte Harding and Beth Tabeart worked at the HD Festival with Alex Wilson, our wizard technician. Alex Wilson has his own company, Boxcat, and is in demand at events around the country. The students did a truly outstanding job. All of the local crew was amazed at how much they knew. Bethany was stolen by production to do management tasks and the site crew selected Leah and Charlotte to do techie bits, rigging lights on the main stage. They all worked really hard, and I am proud of all of them. They were truly part of the team. One of the stage manag- ers said: they were better and knew more than some of the crew who have been doing it for years

The underground chambers and tunnels provide a rich site to research and respond to in their istallations and performances. Each student created their own site specific installation or performance. The audience were taken on a experiencial journey, through transformed spaces, transporting them throught time.

VISITORS VISITORS VISITORS VISITORS VISITORS VISITORS VISITORS VISITORS VISITORS VISITORS ’Simon Vincenzi is… a radical theatre visionary’ Time Out 2008 In November we were fortunate enough to have Simon Vincenzi deliver a guest lecture on his current theatre projects to our 1st year students. In the afternoon Simon then ran a fascinating workshop on ‘the experience’, this was fully interactive and participatory for the students. It was a stimulating and engaging session that took the student’s on a sensory journey of discovery and heightened awareness. Simon is a London-based theatre director, choreographer and designer who has created a huge body of work over the past 20 years. Between 1996-2007 he joined with Frank Bock to form Bock & Vincenzi. During their 11-year partnership the duo made works for both adult and children audiences culminating in both invisible dances…from afar (a work made to be heard on the telephone) and ‘The Invisible’ Dances (2004-2006); a theatre work in three acts presented over three years. Margot’s bench At the end of her second year Margot Laureau won a commission to design and make a bench for the promenade at Herne Bay. Margot was one of six artists and designers chosen to realise their designs, competing against much more experienced designers. She spent a good part of her summer working in our construction workshop making the bench with support and advice from our very knowl- edgeable technicians Georgia and Catherine. Her bench is a bookcase of carved books illustrated with images from Herne Bay and is located at Hampton overlooking the sea.
