IT WAS A YEAR OF TRANSITIONS for the University of Louisiana Monroe. For example, healthcare classes were added as students demanded more choices; out-of-date facilities were removed and modern ones were built; and years of research resulted in fast-tracking health products to the commercial market. These pages of 17 things that happened in 2017 are among only a few of ULM’s achievements and a few reasons why The Best is On the Bayou.

THE BIG REVEAL


ULM unveiled its new institutional logo during “The Big Reveal� in effort to rebrand. This symbol continues to unify the past, present, and future.

FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR


ULM was named an R3 Doctoral University by Carnegie Classification of Institutes of Higher Education and also named a “Best National University� by U.S. News & World Report.

ADVANCES AGAINST CANCER AND ALZHEIMER’S


Since 2009, Dr. Khalid El Sayed has worked to develop an olive oil-based food supplement to help prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. His work is so promising that patents have been filed.

NURSING OPTIONS PROPEL STUDENTS FORWARD

ATHLETES EXUDE EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS


Men’s basketball, men’s golf and women’s cross country teams were ranked in the top 10 percent in Sunbelt Academic Progress Rates.

LEADING THE WAY


ULM welcomes Dr. H. Glenn Anderson, Jr., as the dean for the College of Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences and School of Pharmacy.

MAKING HISTORY


Women’s Tennis wins 1st university Sunbelt championship.

$1 MILLION DONATED FOR EDUCATION


An anonymous donor contributed $1 million to establish scholarship endowments to benefit students pursuing a degree in education.

NEW DIRECTION


Nick Floyd was named ULM Director of Athletics. He brings 33 years of experience in collegiate athletics management.

30 YEARS AND COUNTING


To mark the 30th anniversary of Marriage and Family Therapy, pioneers in the ULM program Dr. Raphael and Dr. Dorothy Becvar, were among specials guests at a symposium and spent the day with current students.

SKI TEAM OWNS THE NATION


The ULM Waterski Team won an unprecedented 28th National Championship. A 40th reunion of the former ski team members was held in November.

NEW HEIGHTS


The SOAR Campaign to raise millions in endowments reached 83 percent of its goal at $46,378,063.

A WHOLE NEW BALLGAME


Coach Michael Federico, joined by his family, at the press conference announcing his position as the 12th head baseball coach for ULM.

FUNDING THE FUTURE


Grants awarded to the university increased by $3 million over the previous year. ULM has 10 endowed chairs and 90 endowed professorships.

DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY APPROVED


ULM’s efforts to establish a Doctor of Physical Therapy were approved by the Board of Regents and work is in progress to create and implement the curriculum.

COMBINED EFFORTS


ULM and Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., entered an agreement to offer a dual Juris Doctorate/Master of Public Administration degree.

PAY INCREASE


Solid fiscal management leads to raises for all eligible ULM employees.
