You’re not only going to a university to become one of us. You’re going because you want to be somebody: You. You might know where you’re going in life—or just know that you’re going somewhere—and you need the right school to get you on that path.
We’re complex. We’re never satisfied. And we’re constantly on the rise.
At the University of Louisville, we get that.
You’re original, limitless and on track for your own version of greatness.
We’ve been the scrappy upstart before. And now we’ve proved ourselves on a competitive level with elite universities around the country. We’ve reimagined ourselves from a regional commuter campus to a nationally recognized university where there is no shortage of ways to learn, socialize and have fun. And all the while, we’ve not lost sight of who we are and what we want. We’ve held true to the core values and traditions that make us Cardinals.
In fact, we’d dare to say we’re a lot like you.
And we can jumpstart the ride of your life. Picking your university is hard. It’s personal. And it comes down to you and what you want. We’re going to surprise you with what we can do to help you on this adventure. And then, it’s your move.

The University of Louisville, founded in 1798, is a state-supported research university located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area. We offer coursework across 12 colleges and schools. We’re committed to achieving pre-eminence as a nationally recognized metropolitan research university.
And here’s what that means if you join us…

We are dreamers & trailblazers. We’re committed to educating a diverse group of undergraduate, graduate and professional students to lead and serve the world. We believe our students need to develop into engaged citizens, leaders and scholars no matter what their degree program is. That means we’re committed to a comprehensive classroom experience and all of the support programs and initiatives to make it happen.
We are explorers & creators. We value innovative thinkers and the entrepreneurial spirit. Applying your classroom education to research, scholarship and creative activity allows you to discover the depths of your academic passions and rise to the top. We’re committed to allowing our students the space to create, the time to research and the resources to make ideas come to life.
7
We are neighbors & world-changers. We know that an education is a privilege and that being part of a thriving academic environment is something not everyone has the opportunity to do. So we’re taking our experience and turning it into opportunity for others. Improving our community and the world through research and service is at the core of who we are.
8
We’re committed to allowing students the chance to use their knowledge and personal drive to find ways to improve our communities, both near and far.
We keep good company. Students come from around the world to attend UofL, creating a culture-rich campus where students with diverse backgrounds, lifestyles and interests learn and thrive. Together, our student body is one of the most academically renowned in the U.S.

We will challenge you. Our classrooms are filled with world-class faculty ready to inspire the next generation of thinkers and innovators. But not all classrooms are the same. We provide different types of learning experiences for wherever you are on your academic journey.
CLASS SIZES Most of our class sizes are small, meaning you’ll get plenty of face-toface time with your professors. But that doesn’t mean every class is set up that way. Students can experience interactive, discussion-based activities in intimate classroom settings, as well as the positive challenges of large, lecture-style classes. We also complement our in-person academic experiences with options for distance learning. We know there can’t be a one-size-fits-all approach to education, so we go the extra mile to provide choices.
STUDY ABROAD We encourage our students to leave Louisville and see the world. More than 900 students last year participated in some type of international learning
10
experience. They took semesters abroad, completed international service projects and more. Study abroad programs and service projects allow students to experience cultures around the globe and broaden their worldview.
HONORS PROGRAM Looking to challenge yourself? Each year, nearly 500 freshmen join UofL’s Honors program. Some of the perks of the program include capped class sizes (no more than 25 students), international travel, professional mentoring and early class registration. Students also have the option of living in suite-style residence halls in livinglearning and themed communities, surrounded by other Honors students.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES We’re one of the fastest-growing research universities in the nation. But we don’t limit research to doctoral students. Our undergraduate students get to work side by side with some of the best researchers in the country. Last year, students from the Speed School of Engineering created a bionic hand for a 6-year-old boy. And, research happens across our university, not just in STEM areas. We believe putting our brightest minds to use is the best way to lead to real-life results that can impact the world.

We go beyond the books. Learning shouldn’t end when class is over. In fact, at UofL we encourage students to be handson. Our faculty gives you the knowledge and guidance you need, and then we push you to be creative and innovative in showcasing your skills, whether it be through performance, competition or service to our community.
BEING HANDS-ON UofL students showcase their work through the construction of rockets and electronics, theatre performances, social work outreach and archaeological research.
12
We believe in variety & choice. Looking for a school with research and innovation opportunities? Want to get a strong liberal arts education? Or something inbetween? We do them all top-notch. With 12 academic schools and colleges within the university, we offer students more than 200 degree programs. So, from music to math, and engineering, we’ve got you covered. And it’s okay to change your mind. There are more than enough degree options for you to find the one that fits you best.

We get results. We know why most students decide to come to college. We know you want to be living your best life after graduation and you need an amazing job to make that happen. At UofL, we’ve doubled down on career development and placement to make sure that every grad is ready for the post-UofL world—whether that future is a job, an internship or further study in advanced degree programs. Our Career Development Center helps students find success. Each year career opportunities, including jobs and internships, are available through the center. And every year, more than 1,300 first-year students work with the center to examine and expand their major and career options. Our schools and colleges are also encouraging their students to get hands-on career experience before getting their caps and gowns. Last academic year, more than 4,500 students were placed in internships and co-ops for their degree program. And our students aren’t just taking
16
any available experience. Our students compete for and land internships at some of the region’s biggest players. We know this matters. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reported that 95 percent of employers say candidate experience is a major factor in hiring decisions, and half of employers want that experience to come directly from internship or co-op programs.

WE ENCOURAGE MAJOR EXPLORATION Some students come to college ready to tackle their major. Others are still thinking about their career choices and trying to nail down the right fit. We understand. Our College of Arts & Sciences offers an exploratory program for students who are still deciding. The program helps students assess their strengths, weaknesses, interests and skills to find the right major and career track. Once you pick a major, you’ll transition out of the exploratory program and move into the college or school of your choice. In the meantime, you knock out some of the general education requirements that all students need.

We live to the fullest. When you’re here, we want you to be present. And that doesn’t just mean in class. Our campus offers a range of activities and amenities designed to keep you engaged. STUDENT LIFE Like politics? Live for fashion? We offer more than 450 registered student organizations, including academic groups, faith-based organizations, social clubs and cultural organizations. Our Big Three—the Student Government Association; Student Activities Board; and Engage, Lead, Serve Board—are charged with cultivating the campus experience for students. They offer daily activities, including cookouts, lectures and movies. They also offer some of the biggest student events on campus each year, such as seminars and shows with special guests, like former NFL player Michael Sam and rapper Kendrick Lamar.
Annual events and activities at UofL include the International Fashion Show, which spotlights student cultures; the 18-hour RaiseRed Dance Marathon, which raises money for pediatric cancer

CAMPUS HOUSING More than 70 percent of first-year students live on campus, taking advantage of the chance to live at the epicenter of a vibrant student experience. UofL guarantees freshman housing. Options include traditional halls, suites and apartments. In addition to modern amenities, each hall offers student programs and events aimed at keeping you involved, informed and engaged. Some halls also offer living-learning and themed communities where students with similar interests, such as honors and social justice, live together and participate in programs tailored to meet personal and academic goals.
DINING UofL features more than 20 oncampus dining options—ranging from Starbucks in the library to Panda Express in the Student Activities Center to our all-you-can-eat The Ville Grill. All students living on campus are automatically assigned a meal plan according to where they live but can upgrade their plan to satisfy individual dining preferences.
24
Our dining establishments make sure to offer plenty of healthy options, as well as options for specific diets. We regularly work with students with nut allergies, religious restrictions, and vegetarian and vegan diets.

We’re weird, just like our city. Ever been to Louisville? If not, we’re about to let you in on one of the bestkept secrets in America. It’s the perfect combination of Midwest hustle and Southern charm, dashed with a little bit of big city culture. It’s a little offbeat and quirky and certainly unlike anywhere else. At UofL, we love the relationship we have with the city. It’s our city and we’re its university.

We’re compassionate. In Louisville, we believe in compassion and striving to help others. That is not just a slogan; it’s a mission of the leadership of the city. At UofL, we’ve long been a leader in helping improve our favorite city. We encourage our students to be a part of positive change through community engagement. We do it through building Habitat for Humanity houses or working in local schools. We do it through providing health care to low-income Kentuckians and through striving for social change.
Our work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Carnegie Foundation recognized UofL with its Community Engagement Classification. The designation denotes institutions that improve teaching and learning, produce research that makes a difference in communities, and feature a spirit of partnership within their civic and academic missions. We believe in the community in which we live. It’s part of our foundation.
We're ready for you. We think we offer a complete package at UofL—one that allows you to dive right into your major or explore your options until you find it. So what's next?
