Why the seahorse? The University’s emblem from 1965 until 2007 was a mythical seahorse, based on the naval coat of arms of Lieutenant John Shortland, who chartered and named Hunter’s River in 1797. The University’s contemporary seahorse looks back to our heritage and the history of Newcastle and recognises our status as one of Australia’s most forward-looking universities.
