ADVANCED METS DOCTORAL TRAINING CENTRE The University of Newcastle is renowned for the quality and breadth of our research, and for our commitment to research translation, innovation and working with industry, business and government partners. We are recognised as a world-class research intensive university with a strong and vibrant research culture, acknowledged for its impact and relevance to the region, the nation and globally. From these solid foundations the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in Advanced Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) has been established. The METS sector is critical to the nation's economy, with Australia holding a leading position in the global market in a variety of specialised products and solutions for mineral exploration, extraction and mining supply chains. Administered by the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), the METS DTC enhances PhD student outcomes by applying an engaged, multidisciplinary model to doctoral training. By partnering with industry, the METS DTC provides innovative research training through workplace practice aimed at solving real world challenges. It provides industry with new discoveries and breakthrough technology with practial applications whilst generating ongoing economic growth, environmental and social benefits.

The METS DTC research training program is innovative in that: • It enables candidates to work on research projects developed in collaboration with industry partners • It provides candidates with enhanced knowledge, interdisciplinary awareness and advanced industry and career-based skills • All candidates spend time working at the company site of the industry partner • The candidate is supported by a mentoring team made up of an industry-based supervisor, academic supervisors, DTC peers and professional support staff
