The Computing AND Information Technology Industry
Why is Computing and Information Technology so important?
After a few floundering years brought about largely by the dotcom crash in the early 2000s, the IT industry in Australia is once again booming as a strong economy and heavy investment in IT infrastructure by major industries underpins growth across the sector. Yes, India does a lot of the world’s outsourced basic coding. BUT … The world wants the creativity, problem solving and high-level skills of computing and IT graduates. With over 200,000 people currently employed in the Australian IT industry, there were still average vacancies running at 23,000 in June 2008 according to Federal Govt statistics. The rapid rate of technological change means that employment opportunities for qualified personnel continue to outstrip supply and graduates with degrees in computer engineering, computer science, information technology and software engineering are in high demand and University of Newcastle graduates entering the industry are extremely highly regarded.
There are very few activities that don’t use computers to improve or enhance the way we work, the way we use our leisure time, or the way we interact. This means that computing and IT professionals are found not only in the IT sector but also across all areas of business and industry. However, the IT industry is currently experiencing a fairly significant skills shortage. Recruitment specialists are finding it increasingly difficult to balance supply and demand of various IT skills and positions. Results from Graduate Careers Australia’s 2007 survey of graduate recruiters revealed that many graduate employers continue to have difficulty sourcing IT graduates. Hence, with demand so strong, a career in computing and IT is a smart option in terms of employment prospects.
