Each year, he spends a portion of his time working in, and for, remote Australian communities providing access to quality healthcare that would otherwise be limited or unavailable.

Challenging the status quo Dr Amy Maguire’s research in the area of 'selfdetermination' is a topic that has been off the radar in international law but it could soon be sharply back in focus. Self-determination is the collective human right of a people to determine their political, social, cultural and economic future. Amy’s research has focused on self-determination for those who claim a contemporary colonial experience that has not been adequately addressed by international law or the nation states in which they live. The right to self-determination is not only relevant to indigenous populations but can have far reaching implications for displaced peoples all over the world. Dr Maguire is now extending her research to peoples displaced by climate change, including those from small Pacific island states who are beginning to bear the effects of environmental change. She proudly supervises PhD students in their research projects.

It’s important to know that most students don’t pay
the fees for their degree up front, so you don’t have to worry about being able to afford your degree right now.

Scholarships can help with all kinds of costs including textbooks, fees, accommodation and living expenses, and are a great confidence boost to the recipient.

Australian citizens or permanent humanitarian visa holders are eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place, which means that the Government will pay a portion of your fees and you are charged a student contribution.

While many of our scholarships consider academic performance, we also award scholarships for travel, sport, specific degrees, and to Indigenous students.

HECS-HELP LOAN Most eligible students completely defer their fees to the Tax Office as a HECS-HELP loan. This means you won’t start to pay back your debt until you are earning a certain amount. The current threshold is $54,126 per year. When you’re earning a salary over this amount, your fees are paid back gradually as part of your tax contribution.

The University of Newcastle offers scholarships ranging from $500 right through to $15,000 per year.

Several scholarships offer the opportunity to meet with the donor and to undertake internships and vacation work
- a great way to make important industry contacts. You can apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for. Application dates vary, so check newcastle.edu.au/ scholarships for details. ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

options for entry

THE PATH TO UNIVERSITY IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE, BUT THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO START YOUR LEARNING JOURNEY HERE.

School leavers If you’re planning to come to university straight after finishing high school, a number of entry options are available. HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE (HSC) If you are completing or have recently completed your HSC or equivalent, you may be eligible to receive an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), which can be used to gain entry into uni. The ATAR is a number that ranks how well you went in the HSC compared to other students. It’s based on your overall marks in the HSC and is used for selection into university degrees. HIGH ATAR GUARANTEE You’ve worked hard to achieve outstanding results so we’d like to take the guesswork out of uni entry by guaranteeing you a place in most of our undergraduate degrees*. If you receive an ATAR of 90 or above, the University of Newcastle will guarantee you a place in the UAC main round offers.

FOUR BONUS POINTS FOR RURAL AND REGIONAL STUDENTS HSC students who go to schools in certain regional or rural areas are automatically awarded an additional four bonus points to all of our undergraduate degrees (excluding the JMP) through our Regional and Rural Preference Scheme. YEAR 12 BONUS POINTS SCHEME We reward high achieving Year 12 students by giving them up to four bonus points for excellent marks in specific HSC subjects. These subjects must be relevant to the degree you are applying for. SCHOOLS RECOMMENDATION SCHEME (SRS) We provide early offers to motivated and talented Year 12 students who have the ability to succeed at uni but for some reason may fall short of the marks for entry. Selection is based on a range of criteria including a minimum ATAR*.

*Excludes some UON degrees. Visit newcastle.edu.au/degrees for more information. 21 | The University of Newcastle

Non-school leavers If you are planning to apply for uni and you haven’t completed the HSC in the last 12 months, you’re considered a non-school leaver. You can be considered for admission into a University of Newcastle undergraduate degree on the basis of: PREVIOUS STUDY • Your performance in the HSC or equivalent - irrespective of when you gained the qualification. • Completed or partly completed higher education studies. • TAFE or other qualifications - completed Certificate IV or higher (Cert III is accepted for a limited number of programs). • Overseas qualifications equivalent to Australian studies. • Post-secondary professional qualifications including health care practitioner qualifications, defence qualifications or commissioned officer status.

Pathways to UON UON is proudly the largest provider of enabling programs in Australia. We ensure that everyone has a chance to enter university, graduate and succeed. NEWSTEP If you didn’t gain enough marks in Year 12 for direct
entry to uni, or were unable to complete Year 12, then Newstep is your pathway into tertiary study. Newstep is a free program that gives recent school leavers aged 18-20
a second chance to study at uni. The program is offered at our Callaghan and Central Coast campuses. Successfully completing the program makes students eligible to apply for entry to degrees at the University of Newcastle (excluding the Joint Medical Program) and many other Australian universities.

“I didn’t get the HSC marks I needed to get into uni, and Newstep provided me with the pathway for entry and the skills I needed to excel.”

• Performance in alternative entry programs. If you have more than one of the qualifications listed above they may all count towards your application. Visit our website for more advice regarding how these qualifications are applied. CREDIT TRANSFER If your TAFE or other qualification is similar to the degree you want to study, you can make the most of your previous studies through credit transfer. You may be granted credit for up to two years of your degree. Explore your eligibility at newcastle.edu.au/credit

need to know Assumed knowledge These are subjects that you should study prior to your degree, as classes will be taught on the assumption that you have a certain level of knowledge when you begin. ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) The ATAR is a measure of academic achievement in the HSC that helps universities to rank applicants for selection to tertiary education courses. It is a score between 0 and 99.95. • Cut-off (ATAR) The cut-off is the minimum rank for entry into a particular UON degree. This is the rank of the last person admitted to the degree. The 2016 cut-offs listed in this brochure are an indication only and change each year according to the number of places available and demand for each course. • Median (ATAR) The median is the middle ATAR of all the people who received an offer to the degree when arranging the ATARs in order from the highest to the lowest value. The 2016 medians are an indication only and change each year. Bachelor degree This is the university level qualification for entry into many professions
(e.g. nursing, teaching, engineering etc). It’s also the term used to describe the program being undertaken to attain an undergraduate qualification, e.g. Bachelor of Arts degree. It takes an average of three to five years of full-time study to complete. Bridging Courses If you need a refresher or have not completed these subjects, we strongly recommend completing a bridging course prior to commencing your degree. Co-major A co-major is an additional major from a secondary area or discipline, which may be completed in addition to a first (mandatory) major within a program.
