University of Portland Annual Scholarly Review 2013-14 Academic Year

From the Provost As the University’s provost, I invite you to read this report so that you might discover one dimension of the remarkable breadth and depth of the University’s intellectual and creative enterprises— hundreds of articles, books, and creative works that the most interesting and inquisitive professors in America have wrought. A university is only as good as its faculty. This faculty takes very seriously its role as an intellectual, cultural, scholarly, creative, artistic, and spiritual resource for not only our students, but also the city, the state, the region, and the nation. Active scholarly engagement, such as that found in this report, affects the quality of teaching on campus. Our faculty scholars are excellent teachers, in part, because they contribute to the development of knowledge in their respective fields. I invite you to read for yourself why we are ranked among the very best Catholic universities. Join me in celebrating the achievements of the University’s faculty for the 2013-14 academic year. The essence of the University’s life and work is the interplay of ideas, debates, and discussions that happen every day between dedicated faculty and energetic students — both inside and outside the classroom.

RISE C A MPAIGN CONCLUDES The University successfully completed its largest ever fundraising campaign, which concluded on June 30, 2014. The RISE Campaign raised nearly $182 million and exceeded its goal by almost $7 million, making it one of the largest fundraising campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university. Twelve New or Renovated Facilities A gift of $20 million, the largest in UP history, from the late Donald Shiley ’51 and his wife and UP regent Darlene renovated Donald P. FACULT Y PROFILES

John Orr, Ph.D. professor of english

“When I began college, I was thinking about becoming a musician. One day, my Freshman Comp professor said, ‘You should think about majoring in English—that would be a beautiful complement to music.’ I remember leaving class and thinking maybe I would do that. Next thing you know, I was an English major. Over the years, I have published articles on scholarship and advising, undergraduate research in the humanities, Western novels and history, multi-ethnic literature, and the authors Don DeLillo, Willa Cather, and Dorothy Scarborough. But my favorite research subject is American historian and writer Henry Adams, specifically his marginalia. Adams’ marginalia—notes in his hand, written in the margins of his books—makes it clear that for him, reading was an intellectual contest, like he was in an intellectual debate with the author of a book. Marginalia is a way to triangulate when and where a person reads and how that impacts the way they read. I think it’s pretty fascinating.

We’ve been a leader among schools of our size in the number of students receiving Fulbright awards for many years. As assistant to the provost, with responsibility for honors and fellowships, these days I spend a lot of my time helping students apply for competitive grants and scholarships. We’ve been a leader among schools of our size in the number of students receiving Fulbright awards for many years. In fact, we were ranked first in the nation from 2011-2013 and 48 students have received Fulbrights since 2001. Now we are seeing more students being competitive for other awards. This past year we had two Goldwater winners, and a student who won a Whitaker International Program grant. I would love to see a UP student win one of the big UK awards—Rhodes, Marshall, and Gates Cambridge. We’ve had finalists for each, so I think it’s only a matter of time. I love being an administrator. But I still teach one English class per semester. Teaching is what got me into this profession, and I will always want that interaction with students.” 10

Ellen Lippman, Ph.D. professor of accounting

“I studied political science as an undergrad and began a master’s degree in dance. But I switched to business after sitting in on an accounting class. I could see that accounting offered a vibrant career. Accounting isn’t just about reporting the past; it provides critical information for the future, requiring a lot of writing and problem solving. Accounting is not ‘all about numbers,’ as many people think. I used to have that same misconception myself. A lot of accounting research is very mathematical — such as how does the stock market relate to this or respond to that. This is a type of work I could do, but it just didn’t speak to me. But then I heard a lecture by a rabbi with the U.S. Holocaust Museum. He talked about how accountants provided financial statements related to the Nazi concentration camps. So I started to think, what do accountants do? How are accountants culpable in the information they provide? I think accountants have a responsibility besides just reporting information. They have to think about how it’s being used.

Accounting is not “all about numbers.” Accountants have a responsibility to think about how information is being used. In addition to research on the role of accounting in the Holocaust, I also study biblical safeguards and traditions as they relate to lending in today’s economy. That’s one of the wonderful things about teaching at University of Portland; I feel that I have the ability to branch out into religion. I’m looking at my own religious tradition and trying to understand how we can provide guidance today. What can we learn about money lending from the past in terms of offering another ethical framework for how we burden students with debt now? That’s a big issue. So yes, I am here to change people’s misconceptions about accounting. And I love teaching at University of Portland. I like the students. I enjoy advising the Competitive Pilot Accountants (CPA) accounting team, which won the 2013 American Institute of CPAs Accounting Competition. I’m very proud of them. If students are interested in working hard, I’ll be here for them.” 13

14

Barbara Braband, RN, Ed.D. associate professor of nursing

“My professional and personal experiences with the health care system sparked a passion to guide nursing students toward sacred service to others. In particular, I am devoted to research that leads to improvements in community health. I went through breast cancer treatment twelve years ago. The depersonalization and minimization of suffering I experienced prompted me to research this phenomenon. It resulted in an interview project that is now used in a University theology course to raise students’ awareness and understanding of others’ experiences in suffering. A collaborative evaluation of the project with course faculty has been submitted for publication.

I think it’s important for students to hear and learn from diverse experiences; to be exposed to different populations. In 2012 I went to South Africa with a colleague and an alumnus to research the impact of memory books on orphaned children. The books were designed to alleviate suffering and to establish an identity each child may have lost. The study findings were published and ongoing research in India is in progress. I am committed to collaborative innovation in nursing education. Since 2012, I have lead and researched the implementation of the nation’s first community-based Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) model with school nurses at Multnomah Education Service District. I am currently piloting a new student clinical program in North Portland based on local partnerships with organizations committed to improving the health and social determinants of their vulnerable community. I have connected nursing students with community health workers and local health advocates who represent the voice of the people. We’ve also partnered together for health fairs and poverty simulations. I think it's important for students to hear and learn from diverse local experiences. The University’s foundational core values directly connect to the work done in these programs. My goal is to help students see how professional service contributions make a difference.” 15

Katie O’Reilly, Ph.D. professor of biology

“As a kid, I spent many hours kayaking in the wetlands and harbors of Long Beach and Newport Beach, California. There are so many seabirds there. It’s just so rich. I knew then that I was going to follow in the footsteps of my aunt, a field biologist, and that meant I needed a Ph.D. in biology. My research interests are behavioral ecology and endocrinology of birds, primarily seabirds. I have studied the role of hormones in migrating sandpipers along the West Coast and overwintering chickadees and nuthatches in the Cascades. Collaboration is very important to research in my field. I worked with Portland State University professor Michael Murphy on research on eastern kingbirds—part of a three-year National Science Foundation grant. And I also spent five summers—with the help of University of Portland students—researching Leach’s storm-petrels.

I make sure my students get out in the field so that they really experience nature and appreciate it. Last year, I had a Fulbright grant to study little penguins on Matiu/Somes Island in New Zealand with collaborators Todd Dennis and Jingjing Zhang at the University of Auckland. We used duct tape to attach lightweight GPS tracking devices to penguins. The penguins left their nests at night to avoid diurnal predators, went to sea during the day to gather food, and returned to their nests the following night with food for their chicks. We found out how far they went, the path they took, and whether that might vary with weather conditions. We know how deep they dove for fish and the temperature of the water. And now we are investigating how hormones influence their feeding behavior. With regard to teaching, some of my favorite memories are from students who have never been camping or looked at wildlife before. I make sure I get them out in the field so that they really experience nature and appreciate it. I love seeing their eyes open to what’s out there, and hearing from them years later about their own experiences observing wildlife.” 16

17

18

Phyllis Egby, Ph.D. assistant professor of education

“There are seven teachers in my family, but I wanted to be different, so I took a job in the corporate sector. But when my son was born with special needs, I started taking classes to be a better parent to him. I loved the classes and it evolved into a new career in education. My specialty areas are special education, second language learners, and talented and gifted students. My classes help teachers meet diverse students’ needs and understand the students’ environment. What’s happening at home, parental support, the communities students come from—these are all important factors in meeting the needs of students.

All teachers who come through our program have the knowledge and experience to work with diverse learners. Prior to 2004, general education teachers received traditional training to meet traditional learning styles, but they were not trained to work with individuals who had special needs. With the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2004, school districts have been required to include special education students in general education classes. But inclusion has to be tailored to meet the school’s resources, the teacher’s style of teaching, subject matter, room environment, and a student’s needs. I found that there is no one model that will fix everything, so in addition to teaching classes, I work as a consultant for local school districts on inclusion practices and strategies. Here at UP, we make sure that all teachers who come through the program have the background knowledge to work with diverse learners, through classroom theory and field experiences. Right now I’m working on a project with Rosa Parks Elementary School to strengthen the connection between home and school learning. We are recording teachers providing math lessons and giving parents the DVD so that they understand how it is taught and can then provide extra support at home. I love working with children and with pre-service teachers. My hope is that by helping teachers, I am also helping students.” 19

20

Martin Monto, Ph.D. professor of sociology

“There is the assumption that ‘soft sciences’ like sociology are easier than the ‘hard sciences.’ That’s absolutely not true. Social phenomena are more difficult to study and harder to measure because there are so many variables that affect social interaction. Yet, we still manage to explain and predict a reasonable proportion of human behavior. Today’s students are barraged by competing truth claims. The Internet has thousands of people supporting just about any claim, no matter how inaccurate. My goal is to provide students with the methodological and analytical tools needed to navigate this quagmire of contradictory information. I encourage them to critically evaluate how data are gathered and used, but not be afraid to draw conclusions.

My goal as a social scientist is to provide our students with the tools to navigate confusing and contradictory information. I also work with students to help them resolve inconsistencies in their research so the findings are unbiased and well supported. For example, Anna Carey ’14 and I published a study that generated national media attention. Using nationally-representative samples of college students from 1986-2012 we debunked the misconception that today’s students live in a pervasive sexual ‘hookup culture.’ Much of my research has focused on prostitution and the sex industry, which started with a grant from the National Institute of Justice in 1997. One of my recent publications proved that it is uncommon for men in the U.S. to patronize prostitutes. I also wrote the grant the University received to implement the Green Dot program, which focuses on bystander intervention as a means to prevent sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence in our community. Implementing this program involved tremendous support from administrators, faculty, and staff across the University. I believe that many of the intellectual advances of this century will come, not from narrow specialists, but from people with the ability to integrate ideas from across disciplines. One of the great privileges of working at University of Portland is being able to take advantage of the ideas and insights of colleagues outside my field.” 21

22

Andrew Nuxoll, Ph.D. associate professor of computer science

“When I was 10 years old, I already wanted to be a computer geek— I wanted to write computer programs when I grew up. My dream came true when I graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and landed a job with IBM. It took me another 10 years to realize that I really wanted to teach. I’ve been at UP since 2007. In addition to teaching, I also work with two students each semester conducting research on episodic memory, which is memory for specific events associated with time and emotion—an essential component of human intelligence. You would think that developing an artificial episodic memory would be easy, too, but it's not. Humans automatically filter memories, remembering what is important and forgetting what is not. For a computer to do that well is really hard.

Humans automatically decide what is important and what is not. But for a computer, learning how to do that well is really hard. When the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) took off in the 1960s, researchers were convinced that they could develop a computer that would think like a human within a couple of decades. But we’re not there yet—the sheer amount of data and the combinations of that data are impossible to cover. A computer has semantic memory— facts it knows—that’s easy. But it doesn't have an episodic memory. I conduct my research with Soar cognitive architecture, a software model of human cognition that is continuously being refined by researchers worldwide since its creation in the 1980s. The episodic memory system in Soar was originally designed and developed by me as research I conducted for my Ph.D. thesis. I want to make a machine with cognitive abilities comparable to humans. I get some fantastic ideas and insights from my students, and I try to keep track of where they end up. Seeing them become successful— that’s the highlight of what I do. That’s why I was unhappy as just a software engineer. I wasn’t having a great positive impact on the world. This job is like the rock in the still pond. Things I am doing now will have a ripple well into the future.” 23

Endowed Chairs The University has among its faculty four endowed chairs, each of whom is known for research and leadership. Robin Anderson, who holds the Franz Chair in Entrepreneurship and is dean of the business school, created the University’s entrepreneurship center, which has twice been recognized as having the best specialty program in the country. Jim Male, the Sweo Chair in Engineering, is sought out by city, state, corporate, and federal agencies for his expertise in water management and distribution. Steve Kolmes, the Molter Chair in Science, is an internationally renowned biologist and expert on salmon recovery planning. He has also been instrumental in bringing national figures such as

Endowed Chairs served as creative agents among the faculty. Michael Pollan to campus. Michael Andrews, holder of the McNerney-Hanson Chair in Ethics and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has published extensively on ethics and is a noted scholar of Edith Stein, among many other endeavors. But in addition to these talents, endowed chairs also serve as creative agents among the faculty. They start innovative programs like Anderson did with the competitive Entrepreneur Scholars program. They also take their curiosity about scholarship across disciplinary lines. Kolmes joined forces with theologian Russ Butkus to study and teach environmental ethics; and Andrews co-facilitated the DundonBerchtold Faculty Fellows/Student Scholars’ ethics projects with University president Rev. Mark Poorman, C.S.C. Their commitment and talent embodies a core element of the University’s commitment to teaching and learning. 24
