Christus Magister Medal Thomas G. Greene, Ed.D. Portland, Oregon
University of Portland’s longtime provost, Thomas G. Greene, Ed.D., has served the University for more than 35 years, first as an adjunct and most recently as chief academic officer. He has, without question, raised the academic standards and recognition of our beloved University. Not only have his efforts increased enrollment and retention and graduation rates during his tenure, but he has established new degree programs, expanded the Shephard Academic Resource Center, created the Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement, and promoted undergraduate research initiatives as well as other forms of experiential learning that strengthen student support and invigorate the academic fabric of the student experience here on The Bluff. Even with all of these initiatives, he hasn’t strayed from what got him into this field in the first place. A brilliant, devoted teacher, he has continued to teach a course each semester, keeping his connection to students. From very early on, there really was no other career choice for him; he always knew he would be an educator. “I have always been happily on the path,” he says. And he credits his Aunt Audrey, whom he describes as “a gregarious, filled-with-adventure teacher,” with igniting his love of learning. Greene may also earn the award as the first provost in the history of provosts to have taught kindergarten through doctoral students—
including outdoor school for middle-schoolers and drivers ed. An Oregon native, his formative years and the first 18 years as an educator were in North Clackamas, where he learned about the benefits of 360-degree support for students and where he first saw the transformative nature of relationships on a young person’s education. Coming to University of Portland, which aspires to the Catholic tradition of teaching the “whole person,” was a natural extension of Greene’s teaching philosophy. Greene also found a spiritual home with the Congregation of Holy Cross. He was recently awarded a Holy Cross Spirit Award, given by the Congregation to lay people who have been partners in service to the world. Before becoming a full-time member of the school’s community in 2004, he enjoyed a long and distinguished career in public education. Among many other posts, he served as a K-12 educator, Principal of East Orient School in Gresham; Superintendent of the Orient School District; and Assistant Superintendent of the Gresham-Barlow and Beaverton School Districts. While at University of Portland, he held leadership positions as Associate Dean of the School of Education (2004-2007), Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School (2007-2012), Interim Dean of the School of Education (2009-10), and Interim Provost (2012-13) before being named the University Provost in 2013.

Candidates for Degrees Nancy Bryant Portland, Oregon
University of Portland Regent Nancy Bryant has focused her career and her leadership on strengthening her community, a core philosophy she credits to her small-town Midwestern roots. “When you are a member of a community, you give something back to that community,” she says. “If you want a strong community, you build it.” She has been giving back to the Portland community for more than 30 years. She earned a bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri and began her career in public affairs with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. After public relations work in Detroit and an MBA from Eastern Michigan University, Bryant started focusing her leadership skills on nonprofits, specifically on education and health care. “Few things make a bigger difference in an individual’s life than education,” she believes. Through an early board membership with Portland Women’s Foundation, where she served as president, helped evaluate grant requests, and made site visits to nonprofits throughout the area, she learned the importance of sustained, strong leadership to the long-term success of nonprofit organizations. In addition to the University of Portland, she has worked on the boards of Lifeworks NW, Jesuit High School, Stand for Children State Advisory Board, and the Oregon Episcopal School, and is
currently board president for the Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation. UP has been blessed with Bryant’s strategic leadership for 12 years. She not only cochaired the successful RISE Campaign, which raised $182 million for the school and student scholarships, but she was instrumental in supporting the University of Portland’s successful Nonprofit Management MBA program when it started in 2013. Tailored to leaders already working in nonprofits, the program offers the coursework of a traditional MBA plus specialized courses for the nonprofit sector. Bryant was closely involved in the early years of the program, serving on an ad hoc advisory committee and even attending an occasional lecture or class. She and her husband, Andy Bryant, former chairman of the board and chief financial officer of Intel, established the Bryant Fellowships to support qualified students for this program. She maintains close ties with some of the students and has been gratified to see the graduates continue to make a difference as they move up in management roles at organizations such as Mercy Corps, Friends of the Children, and University of Portland. “We hope that by helping to strengthen the leaders of our nonprofits, we will help strengthen our community and serve the people who live around us,” she says.

decision that was reversed during the Reagan Administration. At the time of the termination, the Grand Ronde Tribe had a population of 900; today there are 6,000 members. Before European contact, there were 100,000.) After Kennedy conducted an initial health care needs assessment, she learned that most Native people did not have access to care, the infant mortality rate was among the highest in the nation (this has changed), in addition to a low average life expectancy. The Tribe opened its new health clinic in 1997. Kennedy hired the first doctor and the first nurse. She has served as executive director of the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board and the Tribe’s representative on the Oregon Legislative Commission on Indian Services. She received the Outstanding Service Award from the National Indian Health Board and has been named an Outstanding Leader in Health Care by the Oregon Department of Health. Kennedy has served on the Tribal Council of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde for nearly 22 years, 13 of which she served as Chairwoman. She makes frequent trips to Salem, OR, and Washington, DC, to advocate for her community and to make alliances with other tribes. “I remind people that we’re a strong people,” she says.
Cheryle A. Kennedy has spent her career advocating for the health and equitable representation of Native peoples in the Pacific Northwest and nationwide. She grew up steeped in the pride, history, and traditions of the Grand Ronde Tribe. She recalls lessons from her grandmother about the plants and flowers and their traditional healing properties; she recalls the oil cloth map of their tribal lands that her Chief grandfather kept after signing a treaty with the US government that said the federal government would provide education and health care to their people in exchange for land. Later, she brought Native languages and art into local schools, and she accompanied community members who had to be airlifted to a hospital because there were no care facilities nearby. “We all need healing and health care. That’s why I got into health. I wanted to help people,” she says. As the Grand Ronde Tribe’s first health administrator, she built the Health and Wellness Department from scratch soon after the Tribe’s federal recognition was restored. (The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community includes more than 29 tribes and bands and spans western Oregon, northern California, and southwest Washington. Their tribal reservation was established by treaty in 1853, then terminated in 1954, a

Korea’s Pak Kyong-ni Prize for her contribution to international literature. She is the author of Gilead, winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award; where she writes, memorably, “There is more beauty than our eyes can bear, precious things have been put into our hands and to do nothing to honor them is to do great harm.” She also wrote Home, winner of the Orange Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; and Lila, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her first novel, Housekeeping, won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. Robinson’s nonfiction books include The Givenness of Things, When I Was a Child I Read Books, What are we doing here? Essays, and Mother Country, which was nominated for a National Book Award. She taught at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop for 25 years and retired as the F. Wendell Miller Professor of English and Creative Writing emerita in 2016. This past semester she has been a visiting professor of religion and literature at the Yale Divinity School and Institute of Sacred Music. Robinson was presented with the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, at the conclusion of the Zahm Lecture.
Renowned author and Pulitzer Prize winner Marilynne Robinson graced the University of Portland campus in September 2019 to deliver the annual Zahm Lecture on religion and science. She presented “Wisdom and Knowledge” to an enthralled audience of 1,200 in the Chiles Center. “Wisdom and knowledge stand in such a complex relationship to one another that they invite metaphors drawn from deep reality,” she said. “They are a binary system like stars trapped within the pull of each other’s gravity.” Among many other insights on humanity’s blinders, mistakes, greed, and propensity for violence, Robinson pushed back on the argument that religion and science are at odds. There are important questions to ask, reevaluate, and ask again. “As astonishing as the universe is,” she said, “much more astonishing is the creature that insists on knowing it.” Robinson was the recipient of a 2012 National Humanities Medal, awarded by former President Barack Obama, for “her grace and intelligence in writing.” In 2016 she was awarded the Library of Congress Lifetime Achievement Award in American Fiction, as well as the Dayton Peace Prize’s Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award. In 2013, she was awarded South

Candidates for Degrees Rev. H. Richard Rutherford, C.S.C. Portland, Oregon
Funerals (1990) is considered widely to be the definitive work on the Church’s revised funeral rites. Fr. Rutherford’s scholarly articles have appeared in Worship, Modern Liturgy, Liturgical Ministry, Pastoral Music and Rite, and in 1997 he prepared a threepart video series, “Understanding the Order of Christian Funerals,” for Liturgical Press. His academic awards include a Fulbright Scholar Research Award, the Outstanding Scholarship Award, and UP’s highest faculty honor, the Culligan Award, in 1990. Fr. Rutherford remains active as a lecturer and consultant and enjoys serving as chaplain or “cruise padre” on small ocean liner voyages in the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, and the Far East. One such cruise led him to his current and much-beloved project—in 2012 he facilitated the creation of a University of Portland Undergraduate Research Expedition in Mallorca, Spain, collaborating with fellow Portland faculty and with archaeologists from the University of Barcelona to excavate and study a cemetery in the ancient Roman city of Pollentia. While he can no longer direct the program in person, Fr. Rutherford’s zeal remains undimmed. “The Congregation and the University are in my DNA,” he says, “and Pollentia is a way for me to be involved with UP and make a contribution. My dream is to help make it a permanent global component of our undergraduate research.”
The warm and wonderful theology professor Rev. H. Richard Rutherford, C.S.C., has been the University of Portland’s resident expert in Catholic funeral rites for much of his 36-year career as a full-time faculty member on The Bluff. Often referring to himself as a “hyphenated priest” (priest-scholar, priest-teacher, priest-researcher), the affable Fr. Rutherford knew from a young age that he was bound for the priesthood. “Everyone else knew it too,” he says now, “my family, my friends, my teachers, everyone!” Swayed by Congregation of Holy Cross priests he met in his high school years, young Richard chose the path of academia, earning his bachelor of arts at Notre Dame, Sacrae Theologiae Licentiatus (STL) at Gregorian University in Rome, and Doctorandus Theologiae (Drs. Theol.), at Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, Netherlands. He was ordained as a Holy Cross priest in Rome in 1964. A popular and dedicated teacher from the start, he joined the University’s theology faculty in 1976. Over the course of his distinguished career at UP, he served twice as theology chair, sat on the Board of Regents, and worked directly with famed architect Pietro Belluschi in designing and building the University’s beautiful Chapel of Christ the Teacher. He served as a liturgical consultant to the Archdiocese of Portland and National Conference of Catholic Bishops, and his book, The Death of a Christian: The Order of Christian 8

As a diverse community of scholars dedicated to excellence and innovation, we pursue teaching and learning, faith and formation, service and leadership in the classroom, residence halls, and the world. Because we value the development of the whole person, the University honors faith and reason as ways of knowing, promotes ethical reflection, and prepares people who respond to the needs of the world and its human family.

Brevia A Brief History of the University By the time the Reverend Alex ander Christie was appointed Archbishop of Portland in 1898, the city had already emerged as a major metropolitan center in the Pacific Northwest. What was needed, Christie said, was a university. Tradition has it that while traveling aboard ship along the Willamette River Christie noticed a large building atop Waud’s Bluff. When he learned that it was West Hall (renamed Waldschmidt Hall in 1992, in honor of the late Most Rev. Paul E. Waldschmidt, C.S.C., president of the University from 19621978), the site of the defunct Portland University founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1891, Christie decided to purchase it (with financial assistance from the Congregation of Holy Cross) for the school of his vision. He named it “Columbia University” after the mighty river that flowed nearby, and when it opened its doors on September 5, 1901, it was staffed with priests from the archdiocese. Christie realized that his school needed more than he was able to provide through the archdiocese, so he approached the Congregation of Holy Cross’s Indiana Province with a challenge: “Take over Columbia and make it the Notre Dame of the Pacific Northwest!” The challenge was accepted, and the following September the C.S.C.s, as they were called, assumed ownership. Christie’s challenge had special meaning to the C.S.C.s, for in 1841 several members of their order had traveled from France to Indiana, where they founded the University of Notre Dame.
Their success assured Christie that his own vision would one day be realized. In 1925, the College of Arts and Sciences was founded. In the 1930s, the University’s name was changed to the University of Portland, the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing joined the University as the College of Nursing, and the School of was created. Business In 1948, the School of Engineering was created, followed by the Graduate School in 1950 and the School of Education in 1962. In 1967 the Congregation of Holy Cross order transferred ownership of the University to a lay Board of Regents. Today, some 4,300 students and 244 full-time faculty members are engaged in nationally honored teaching and research on the campus once on the edge of the American wilderness. The University annually garners honors as among the ten best in the West from U.S. News & World Report, has been consistently ranked as one of the top producers for student Fulbright awards among peer institutions in the nation (Chronicle of Higher Education), is ranked 9th nationally as a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers, is ranked 5th in the nation by the Princeton Review for students who make a positive impact in their community, and sends graduates into the world every spring to become leaders in every field of endeavor imaginable. In many ways, 119 years after Archbishop Christie had a terrific idea on a ship in the Willamette River, his dream has come to pass.

Brevia Coat of Arms/Chain of Office/Memorial Mace/ Christus Magister Medal The Coat of Arms
The Brother Godfrey Vassallo, C.S.C., Memorial Mace
The historic shield of the University of Portland is a green shield bearing a silver cross moline and crossed anchors. Beneath the cross and anchors are six wavy bars of silver and blue and on a blue chief an open book with gold clasps. This is an adaptation of the arms of the Congregation of Holy Cross and the city of Portland. The motto is placed on an escroll under the shield and is Veritas vos liberabit (“The truth will set you free”). The supporters flanking the coat of arms are limbs of oak and laurel, symbolic of strength and success.
The ceremonial mace is a traditional emblem of the authority of the president and faculty at institutions of higher learning and is usually carried by the grand marshal in academic processions. At the University of Portland a mace was commissioned in honor of Brother Godfrey, who served as Grand Marshal for many years, and was used for the first time at the seventy-fifth commencement in 1977. University of Portland’s mace is made of polished myrtle wood with bronze trim. The cross at the top symbolizes the founding of the University as a Christian institution. Metal plates bear the names of all University of Portland presidents and the name of the mace.
Chain of Office The President’s Chain of Office is the symbol of the authority of the President and of the unity a university forges from its diverse communities. There are six medallions in the chain, cast in silver, representing the major constituencies of the University: the State of Oregon, the Alumni, the Students, the Faculty, the Congregation of Holy Cross, and the Board of Regents. Tying these six medallions together is the heptagon in enameled silver displaying the symbol of the City of Roses and Mt. Hood. Rising over Mt. Hood is the Morning Star, symbolic of Mary, Mother of the Word Incarnate, patroness of the University. The heptagon is also representative of the Trivium and the Quadrivium, the curricula of the medieval university. At the bottom of the chain is the Coat of Arms of the University of Portland cast in enameled silver. The connecting links are cast in the shape of roots and branches of the rose.
The Christus Magister Medal University of Portland’s Christus Magister Medal is awarded annually to men and women of international distinction. Those to whom the award is presented have evinced a vigorous spiritual life and an accomplished professional career that has significantly advanced knowledge, been of inimitable service to his or her fellow men and women, and been an inspiration and consolation to the world. The Christus Magister Medal is the University’s highest honor, conferred upon those men and women whose lives have illustrated and enhanced the University’s mission, now more than a century old.

Brevia Academic Dress and Procession doctor’s hood being the longest and of fuller shape than the others. The color of the velvet edging denotes the field of learning and the colors of the lining denote the school which conferred the degree. The color of the tassel, worn on the left side of the mortarboard, also indicates the field of study and is gold for those with doctor’s degrees. The colors you will see today in the hoods and gowns of our faculty represent the various fields of learning: white, Arts, Letters and Humanities; drab, Business; light blue, Education; orange, Engineering; brown, Fine Arts; purple, Law; lemon yellow, Library Science; pink, Music; apricot, Nursing; dark blue, Philosophy; golden yellow, Science; scarlet, Theology. The academic procession is led by the Grand Marshal, a faculty member appointed by the President. A traditional order of procession is followed: First come the candidates for degrees according to the order in which the degrees are to be conferred; next, members of the faculty led by the Faculty Marshal; and finally the honorary degree recipients and other members of the platform party, followed by the President of the University. The order is reversed for the recessional.
The history of academic dress dates back to the Middle Ages when many of the scholars were also clerics and wore the costume of the monastic orders. In 1321, the University of C ambridge adopted specific styles and color combinations for its faculties. American colleges and universities desired to adopt a standard code of academic dress, and at a conference held at Columbia University in 1895, representa-tives from various institutions adopted a code and regulations governing academic dress for colleges and universities in the United States. The standards continue to be followed by the American Council on Education. The costumes worn today are all traditional and their colors, trimmings, and patterns interpret the degree, the field of learning, and the institution that conferred the degree. The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed; the master’s gown has an oblong sleeve open at the wrist. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut and the front part has an arc cut away. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves, is faced with velvet and has three bars across the sleeves. The color of the velvet is distinctive of the degree. The hood tells the story. The type of degree (bachelor’s, master’s, doctor’s) is indicated by the width of the velvet edging and the length of the hood, the
