At Oregon’s Catholic university, your mind will be sharpened and your heart will be touched. You will learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and respond ethically so that you can cultivate your best self. You will be prepared not just for a career, but for life.

2

Blossoming cherry trees on UP’s main quad signal the beginning of Spring.

3

Learning for life. At UP, you can discover where you want to go and who you want to be. You’ll find a place that engages your heart and hands as much as your mind— we’ve been guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross, a community of Roman Catholic priests and brothers, since our founding in 1901. This means you’ll take a foundation of liberal arts classes to ensure you have the skills and knowledge to become both an ethical decision-maker and a forwardthinking leader in today’s global society regardless of your major. Through a core curriculum of classes in literature, philosophy, theology, history, math, science, and the social sciences, you will gather and assess evidence, examine the natural world and universe, and explore and learn from cultures, histories, and religious traditions both past and present. You will also have access to a wide range of academic opportunities. We are the only university in Oregon that offers a College of Arts and Sciences; Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, and Nursing; and a Graduate School. This diversity allows you to select from over 40 undergraduate programs, 32 minors, 8 pre-professional programs, and more than 1,400 courses.

4

Time to celebrate: looking forward to the future.

5

Robust resources. We offer a variety of resources to help you succeed from the moment you arrive on campus. The Shepard Academic Resource Center is a one-stop shop that connects you to myriad campus resources including the Learning Commons, Accessible Education Services, Learning Assistance Counseling, First-Year Student Programs, and Programs for Special Populations, such as undeclared and first-generation students. As part of the First-Year Student Program, all freshmen take part in a workshop led by upper-class students who share advice and learning strategies. All students are also assigned an academic advisor who will help you develop academic plans. Trained peer assistants from the Learning Commons can help students apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom, such as writing, math, international languages, and sciences. The Shepard Center provides academic counseling in coordination with the professional schools and the College of Arts and Sciences, while also helping students with career planning, financial aid, registration, and adjusting to college life.

6

Real connections. Our faculty, like many at other schools, are respected scholars and experts; what sets our professors apart is their commitment to you. They invite you to present papers at professional conferences and take part in groundbreaking research. They organize field experiments and service-learning trips and can connect you with industry leaders. But most importantly, they will inspire you to learn and grow. Staff in the Career Center can help you build your professional portfolio starting your freshman year, and they can provide access to mentors, internships, and jobs, as well as skill-building seminars. Studying abroad expands your worldview—we offer a host of programs in such places as Australia, Austria, China, Ecuador, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and Spain—for a summer, a semester, or a year. And all programs fulfill University or major requirements. Closer to home, downtown Portland is only minutes away, giving you access to creative nonprofits, government agencies, high-tech firms, hospitals, industry stalwarts, schools, and more.

7

Focus on leadership. Our Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation offers a wide range of opportunities that are open to all students regardless of major. You can apply for one of our two leadership certificate programs, attend a series of talks with business experts, or take part in our annual $100K Challenge, a venture competition where winners receive funding to put their ideas to work. The Franz Center is also home to one of the nation’s top entrepreneur programs, Entrepreneur Scholars. This competitive program helps students develop a business plan and provides specialized coursework, mentors, and domestic and international travel. Through the Moreau Center, you can become a campus liaison for a local nonprofit agency or help organize service-learning trips that are offered locally and abroad. You can get involved with a student-run club, student government, or our Army or Air Force ROTC programs. If you are motivated to do more, our Honors Program offers high achieving students specialized honors courses, reflection experiences, and close faculty mentoring. How involved you become is up to you.

8

Ethics in action. We want you to think broadly about the world and your place in it. You can minor in social justice to better understand the social inequities within the larger world or minor in Catholic studies to examine the influence of Catholicism throughout history. You can take part in a wide array of activities that are hosted on campus, including hearing first-hand from noted speakers such as the Dalai Lama and best-selling author and food sustainability expert Michael Pollan. The Garaventa Center regularly organizes cross-disciplinary panels, film screenings, and lectures. Past guests have included New York Times writer and reporter David Brooks and author Sr. Helen Prejean, C.S.J., whose book on capital punishment was made into the award-winning film Dead Man Walking. Through the Dundon-Berchtold Institute, you can apply for a scholarship to complete research with a faculty member on an ethical issue related to your academic major and choose to participate in the experiences on and off campus during the annual Ethics Week. And Campus Ministry offers retreats, workshops, and discussion groups that are designed to help you learn and grow regardless of your faith.

9

College of Arts & Sciences: The Humanities. No matter what program of study you select within the humanities, you will find a close-knit community of faculty and students. Together, you will explore a range of ideas and consider questions about faith, values, and human existence. Interdisciplinary minors such as gender and women’s studies, Hellenic studies, Catholic studies, and social justice expand these ideas within a global context. Beyond the classroom, many activities connect you to your interests. You can submit your work to the award-winning history journal Northwest Passages or to Writers, a compendium of original writing on campus. There are instrumental and vocal ensembles and theater productions that welcome new talent. We also have a nationally competitive Ethics Bowl team and an award-winning Speech and Debate Union. Through studying abroad, you can enhance your language skills and explore the culture and history of other countries. Living in Portland means access to foreign films, literary readings, art exhibitions, theater experiences, and musical performances. After graduation, you might choose to follow in the footsteps of other humanities students who have won post-graduate Fulbright Scholarships to teach English in other countries.

10

Humanities.

Communication • English • French Studies • German Studies • History • Music • Philosophy • Spanish • Theater • Theology   The humanities are the cornerstone of human civilization. They explore human nature and achievement, providing a solid foundation for many careers—including law, journalism, government, education, business, and the arts. These fields of study will prepare you to become a creative and independent thinker who can make a meaningful contribution to society with an eye on global engagement. And because we consider the humanities to be the basis for a well-rounded education, many of your core curriculum courses reside in these disciplines.

12

“The most rewarding aspects of UP are the community of students and the dynamic professors who foster our individual passions.”

Career preparation.

Hannes Zetzsche ’16: German Studies and Communication Studies Majors, Political Science Minor // While interning in U.S. Senator Ron Wyden’s office, I spent my time researching policy and current events to help caseworkers, talking to constituents from around Oregon, and being a part of town hall meetings. My internship was an illuminating peek into some of the functions of the government and the intricacies of work in a professional office. The University’s liberal arts education forced me out of my academic comfort zone, and I am able to approach situations in my professional life from various academic perspectives. Currently, I am a service missionary in Taiwan, providing legal assistance to migrant workers. When I return, I will begin law school where I will specialize in immigration law and water law. 13

Sciences.

Biology • Chemistry • Environmental Science • Mathematics • Physics   The sciences challenge you to ask questions and seek answers about the world and your place in it. Our science curriculum combines classroom lectures and theory with hands-on learning. From trips to nearby forests and streams, as well as the Pacific Ocean, your courses take full advantage of the many resources available in Oregon. And students can participate as full partners in research with faculty. These experiences will prepare you for a variety of industry careers and for advanced study in fields related to health, the environment, research, and teaching.

14

College of Arts & Sciences: The Sciences. As a science major, you’ll be mentored by dedicated faculty and given access to the tools, resources, and labs needed to actively participate in research. Our 41,000 square foot science facility, Swindells Hall, is home to a wide range of labs—digital imaging, tissue culture, molecular spectroscopy, environmental analysis, and cadavers, as well as growth chambers, greenhouses, and diffrac tion. We have spectrometers, chromatographs, transmission and scanning electron microscopes, equipment for DNA analysis, and more. Working with faculty, you can present research at conferences or have your work published in peer-reviewed journals. Summer lab work is available at UP and on campuses nationwide through the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, and there are clubs connected to every major and pre-professional program. Interdisciplinary minors, such as neuroscience, allow you to integrate knowledge with other disciplines, as well as with ethics, faith, and reason. If you are interested in medical school or other health-related fields (such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or dentistry), a pre-health advisor can help you weigh your options, meet program requirements, and complete graduate school applications.

15

“In addition to academics, I learned to be reflective, culturally aware, faithoriented, and involved in my community.

Research with faculty.

Silvia Plascencia ’15: Biology Major; Chemistry, Neuroscience, and French Minors // I just completed my second year of medical school at Loyola University Chicago, where I am interested in internal medicine and neurology. My hope is to make a difference in the fields of education and medicine in rural and underserved areas. Going to UP opened up opportunities for me to be involved with clinical and research-based experiences. The small class sizes and supportive professors helped me hone my abilities in critical thinking and analysis. My professors showed a natural passion for what they teach, which made learning in and out of the classroom a valuable experience. Through developing analytical skills and reflecting on my moral values, I feel better prepared for my career in medicine. 16

that connect you with media outlets, advertising agencies, social services, and government agencies in Portland. If you are interested in research, professors will work with you on topics such as human memory, psychological disorders, age and gender issues, immigration, and mental health. They will also help you turn your findings into presentations for professional conferences. You can pursue interdisciplinary minors such as gender and women’s studies, social justice, Catholic studies, and neuroscience to integrate your disciplinary knowledge with ethics, faith, and reason within a global context. Many social science majors take advantage of spring and summer break intensive service opportunities through the Moreau Center. Travel options include the U.S./Mexico border, farms in Washington’s Yakima Valley, and Nicaragua to

examine economic, environmental, and human rights issues. Study abroad programs in Europe and Central America also offer courses and experiences that fit well with these major areas of study.

18

Social Sciences.

Communication • Economics • Environmental Ethics & Policy • Organizational Communication • Political Science • Psychology • Social Work • Sociology   The Social Sciences ask the how, why, and what-if questions about humans—how we interact, think, and communicate. These programs will challenge you to see what surrounds you every day in new and different ways. You will take courses that explore leadership and cultural influence, investigate questions related to justice and peace, and analyze the moral responsibilities we have to each other and the natural world so that you can become an engaged citizen in today’s global environment.

“I chose UP for the small classes, generous scholarships, dedicated professors, the close community, and the beautiful campus.”

Exploring knowledge.

Sarina Klein ’18: Organizational Communication and French Studies Majors // Going to college in Portland has provided me with so many opportunities as an organizational communication major, and UP does an excellent job of connecting students with professionals. Through hosted panels, I’ve heard many stories as to how others discovered their careers, and I’m already building contacts with companies where I might want to intern. I was fortunate to study abroad in Nantes, France. Thanks to the wonderful resources here, I was able to go on an adventure of a lifetime knowing I was prepared and supported through my journey. I’ve gained many practical skills in my classes, including those outside my major, and while I’m not certain just yet which career path I will choose, I know UP is preparing me for success. 21

Business.

Accounting • Economics • Finance • Marketing • Operations & Technology Management   In the Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. School of Business, students develop an entrepreneurial mindset and global acumen to innovate, lead, and solve complex business problems within an ethical framework. We review our curriculum continually so it remains current and relevant, and our faculty members are dedicated teachers and scholars who are engaged in the business community. The Pamplin School of Business is accredited by AACSB International, which is awarded to only five percent of business schools worldwide. Non-business majors can earn an undergraduate degree and a Master’s in Operations & Technology Management, a STEM designated program, in five years.

24

Pamplin School of Business. Our graduates are known for making a difference in the world, and so can you. Our programs and resources will give you the skills, confidence, and knowledge to initiate change and solve complex problems. Our Bloomberg Trading Room, one of the largest of its kind at a university in the West, has nine dedicated terminals that allow you to research stocks and financial data. There are a host of student-run clubs that will complement your major and enhance your University experience. We strongly encourage participation in a meaningful international experience to prepare you for leadership roles in the global community. Our Pamplin Professional Preparation Program (P4) will provide you with the tools you need to discover and explore your career path, as well as analyze your strengths and interests to identify the vocation you will truly enjoy. Collaboration with Portland’s business community provides access to case projects and mentoring, as well as internships that often lead to full-time positions. Our graduates are heavily recruited by companies such as Adidas, Audigy Group, Cambia Health Solutions, Daimler, Fisher Investments, Intel, Nike, PACCAR, PepsiCo, and Providence Health and Services.

25

“I chose UP for the size of the school and its close proximity to downtown Portland.”

Business foundation.

Seth Roessmann ’17: Operations & Technology Management Major // Coming from Montana, I’ve been very impressed with the culture in Portland and at UP. People love to help each other out, and the motivation to network and develop a strong work ethic has been tremendous. There are internships everywhere, I’ve met a lot of great people, and I love the personal skill development that comes with working with people who are always pushing to better themselves. One of my friends always calls OTM a “hard major,” and it seems companies feel that way too, as demand for OTM graduates is so high we have our own speed networking event with top companies in the area. I believe I can add a lot of value wherever I go to start my career.

26

27

School of Education. Our programs will give you the knowledge and experience you need to become a successful teacher. You begin working in schools during your first semester and can become involved in a host of community service and outreach opportunities. We have a partnership with a local middle school and high school that offers tutoring and mentoring opportunities, and the Moreau Center provides connections to a wide range of service organizations. We have a study abroad program in Fremantle, Australia, where you can work in local classrooms, and programs in Spain where all instruction is in Spanish. In addition to earning a degree in education, you can complete an endorsement in Reading, Special Education, or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), as well as double major or minor in one of the many relevant programs offered through the University’s College of Arts and Sciences. We also have a master’s program, PACE, that combines summer classes on campus with teaching in underserved Catholic schools in the Northwest. In recent years, all graduates have earned a teaching license and at least 80 percent have taken charge of their own classroom the following fall.

28

Education.

Elementary Education • Secondary Education   Teachers have a powerful impact on young lives, and we take this responsibility seriously. We were the first nationally accredited private school of education in Oregon. Our curriculum prepares you to teach and lead students in private and public schools. It emphasizes professional grounding in the theory and practice of teaching, as well as hands-on experience. You will be taught by faculty who have been teachers and are trained in the latest methods of teaching theory, and you will have completed over 1,200 hours of observation and instruction in private and public K-12 classrooms by the time you graduate.

29

“The relationships I have made at UP are irreplaceable and have helped me grow into the person I am today.”

In the classroom.

Katie Snider ’17: Elementary Education Major // One of my favorite aspects of UP is the relationships I have with my professors. The faculty have a passion for what they are teaching and continue to go above and beyond the core requirements. My professors genuinely care for me as a student and a person. Along with my classes, student teaching has taught me about what it takes to be a great teacher. Not only am I gaining confidence in my knowledge and ability, but I’m also gaining insight and exposure in a real classroom setting. Being a student teacher has reinforced my passion for education and I feel truly prepared and excited to be a second grade teacher for Vancouver Public Schools this fall.

31

Engineering & Computer Science.

Civil Engineering • Computer Science • Electrical Engineering • Mechanical Engineering   Your engineering and computer science education begins on your first day in the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering—there is no pre-engineering study. Our programs are nationally accredited, professors teach all engineering and computer science classes and laboratories, and our resources in Shiley Hall are dedicated to undergraduate students. Experimentation, teamwork, and innovation are integrated with engineering theory, analysis, and design to ensure that you are well-prepared to become a technological leader. And through our programs, you can earn both a Bachelor of Science and a master’s in biomedical engineering in five years.

32

Shiley School of Engineering. We want our graduates to become engineering leaders in the 21st century global economy, which means we provide the personal attention, resources, and opportunities that will prepare you to do so. Shiley Hall houses 17,000 square feet of lab space dedicated to a range of specializations—from thermodynamics and robotics to surveying and experimental mechanics. It also has two dedicated labs for computer science along with extensive shop facilities. The School sponsors several student-run clubs that take part in regional and national competitions, as well as service work in developing countries. You can conduct research as part of a course or during the summer. There are business competitions, lectures, and entrepreneurial programs organized by the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. If you are interested in studying abroad, we’ve developed summer and semester programs that are designed specifically for engineering and computer science majors. Closer to home, many computer and engineeringbased companies are in Portland, which makes the city a great place to find an internship or start a career.

33

“To me, leadership means character. Character is about who you are as a person and having character goes a long way in being a leader for others.”

Leadership experience.

John Julius Muwulya ’15: Civil Engineering Major // Being president of the University of Portland student body gave me a platform to represent my fellow students every single day. It was a privilege to serve and work with the administration to represent the needs of the students. Along with my leadership position, being a student in the Shiley School of Engineering helped prepare me for my career with hands-on projects and a rich curriculum full of interesting subjects. I now work as a project engineer at Hoffman Construction Company in the greater Seattle area, and I am continuing to pursue leadership opportunities within my civil engineering career. Not only do I want to be part of senior leadership teams, but more importantly I want to participate and contribute toward the success of the company. 34

35

School of Nursing. Our nursing graduates have scientific minds, a commitment to social justice, and a passion for nursing. To prepare you for today’s fast-paced nursing profession, you will spend many hours in our Dean Terry Misener Learning Resource Center, a state-of-the-art model hospital and clinic. The center has an acute-care lab with eight patient rooms and the same type of equipment that is found in our partnering hospital facilities; an outpatient clinic lab with four rooms to practice complete physical exams, electronic documentation, and safe patient transfers; and three high fidelity simulation suites in which you will provide nursing care for complex patient care simulations. You will also complete 765 hours of clinical practice across a variety of health care settings. Other opportunities include local and international service projects, studentrun clubs, and study abroad programs in Fremantle, Australia; London, England; and Granada, Spain, which fit well with nursing requirements. We also have a partnership with Providence Health and Services that offers select students tuition assistance, covering 80 percent of the last two years of tuition in exchange for a three-year work contract with Providence.

36

Nursing.

Nursing   You will learn how to provide comprehensive care in a variety of settings, preparing you well for a wide range of nursing careers. A unique aspect of our program is that it combines a professional education with a strong liberal arts program. The quality of our nationally accredited School of Nursing is well-known in the regional healthcare community, and it is also recognized nationally for innovation in clinical teaching. These advantages all add up to more opportunities for you when you graduate.

37

38

“I love that faculty are knowledgeable and supportive, and the curriculum is both challenging and rewarding.”

Difference maker.

Conor Livingston ’16: Nursing Major // I chose nursing because I want to help people and make a difference in the lives of others. Being in Portland has exposed me to many opportunities and clinical experiences in the healthcare field. The School of Nursing stresses the importance of leadership with each student. I was challenged to practice my skills and critical thinking abilities, which I now apply in my career as a cardiovascular ICU nurse at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Washington. I plan to return to school to become a nurse anesthetist. I’ve learned that to be a nurse is to recognize a need in society and have the desire to fulfill it. I am proud that nursing is both my profession and vocation.
