At Oregon’s Catholic university, we prepare you not just for a career but for life. Your mind will be sharpened. Your heart will be touched. And you will be inspired to do more than you ever thought possible.

2

UP’s main academic quad includes the library, dining hall, chapel, and academic buildings.

3

Become a difference maker. At UP you will explore who you are and who you want to be. In addition to pursuing one of over 40 different academic programs, you will find extraordinary opportunities to cultivate your best self. You can take part in service-learning projects and volunteer programs; work on research projects with professors; develop leadership skills through entrepreneurial programs, campus clubs, and campus ministry; and expand your worldview by studying abroad or hearing renowned speakers on campus share their expertise. No matter what you choose, you will be part of a select group of students who want to make a difference.

WHY UP is one of the top characterbuilding universities in the nation, according to the Templeton Foundation.

UP?

6

“The professors here are so personable and really encourage students to be engaged in their education.”

Actively engaged.

Kale Kanaeholo ’18 // Coming to UP from Hawaii has provided me the opportunity to share my heritage and history 2,500 miles from home. When you step onto The Bluff, you have the opportunity to discover your different interests through academic and campus activities. During my time at UP, I have grown as a student as well as explored different passions through on-campus jobs and programs. I have become the photography editor for the school yearbook, a tour guide for the Office of Admissions, and a member of the Hawaii Club. Since freshman year, I have grown tremendously as a person and a student. I am finding my identity here at the University of Portland.

7

Abundant options.

8

The plaza and steps in front of Clark Library  With more than 40 majors, 32 minors, and over 1,400 courses to choose from, you’ll find an array of academic programs. We are also the only university in Oregon to offer a College of Arts and Sciences; Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, and Nursing; and a Graduate School.

9

Personal connections. Our professors—who are experts in the fields of business, education, engineering, and nursing as well as the arts and sciences—live and breathe what they teach. They are nationally recognized for their skills, and they show it every day in their commitment to helping you learn and grow. UP is known for its collaborative approach and sense of community, which means you will work as a team with other students and faculty to explore problems and potential solutions. You will also find that it’s easy to get involved because most classes have fewer than 30 students, and professors know who you are. When you combine this personal approach with knowledgeable faculty and state-of-the-art facilities, you will quickly find that discoveries really can happen every day.

10

UP has the resources you need—from a variety of specialized labs to ample study areas in our remodeled Clark Library. We are also home to the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation; the Shepard Academic Resource Center; as well as Army and Air Force ROTC and Honors programs.

12

International horizons. Studying abroad gives you access to experiences that will change how you think about yourself and the world, and we want you to be able to take advantage of this opportunity. At UP we offer more than a dozen studies abroad programs as well as additional options through partner organizations. All of these programs are designed to fulfill either core University classes or specific major requirements, even for specialized areas including nursing, social work, business, and engineering. Programs are based in such places as Australia, Austria, China, Ecuador, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and Spain and are offered for a summer, semester, or year. But no matter which experience you choose, you’ll make memories that last a lifetime.

WHY UP is one of the top national producers of Fulbright student scholars among peer institutions, and most of these students studied abroad.

“I believe it’s important to engage and understand the global community.”

Study abroad.

Frances Turner ’17 // I decided to study abroad so I could experience another culture in a full immersion setting. I spent a semester abroad in Granada, Spain, because I wanted to improve my Spanish in all areas: speaking, listening, writing, and reading—all while living with a family there. Some of my favorite memories from my semester were spending time with my host family, meeting new people, and exploring the city. Studying abroad was truly one of the best experiences of my life. I think it’s important for students to expand their bound aries and try new things, which is exactly what studying abroad allowed me to do. My appreciation and love for the Spanish language and culture only grew during my time in Spain.

Volunteering in Portland’s Tryon Creek State Park—service and sustainability are core UP values.

18

One way new students can get involved even before school starts is to sign up for the Service Plunge, which allows participants to become immersed in the community by volunteering with local organizations.

19

Celebrating community outside the Chapel of Christ the Teacher.

20

Spiritual awareness. Since our founding, UP has been guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross, a community of Roman Catholic priests and brothers who see education as a work of forming the heart as well as the mind. This means that all students are provided with a range of opportunities to explore questions of faith, virtue, and ethics. You will have access to sacred spaces, mentors in faith, formation in prayer, and peer ministry. Campus Ministry is committed to welcoming and connecting you to the resources, retreats, faith communities, and liturgies that meet you where you are and help you mature in your faith. Pastoral residents live in every residence hall, and Mass is available in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher and in the residence hall chapels. Throughout the year, the Garaventa Center hosts renowned speakers who bring into focus the intersection of faith and culture.

21

Tie volunteer efforts to your major and you’ve added value—and values— to your education. UP is one of the nation’s top colleges among its peers for commitment to service and is listed on the 2015 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

22

Creating change. Service and community engagement are central to UP’s mission to prepare students to respond to the needs of the world. Each year hundreds of students serve in the local community as a way to be active citizens, contribute to our community, and learn about themselves. Getting off campus and engaging with others is a great way to connect with the issues you care about most and be a part of creating change. Through the Moreau Center you can get involved in weekly and monthly activities as well as one-time service events such as planting trees, tutoring and mentoring children, or assisting people experiencing homelessness. In addition to local service opportunities, the Moreau Center offers immersion programs during academic breaks to learn first-hand about social justice issues facing different regions and cultures in the U.S. and other countries.

24

“I have been at UP for four years and there is still so much left to do and see on campus and in Portland.”

Community involvement.

Maryam Saudagaran ’17 // Being involved on campus has given me the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of students. And, I’ve also gained great friends as well as formed invaluable and lasting relationships. As the former hall council co-president for Shipstad and the marketing coordinator for the Campus Programming Board (CPB), I collaborated with fellow students and residence life staff in organizing successful, engaging events for others— which is something that I really enjoy doing. Some of my favorite events were Dance of the Decades and the Rock The Bluff concert. I have also stayed involved in the local nursing community through my work as a Providence Scholar and the UP Student Nurses Association.

25

Real experiences. Our goal is for you to go beyond the classroom no matter what your field of study. In addition to the connections you will make through our academic programs as well as through schools, clinics, research labs, and entrepreneurial ventures, our Career Center offers myriad resources to support you as early as your freshman year. Staff can provide advice on LinkedIn profiles, review resumes, and help with interview techniques. Handshake, an online recruiting and job platform, enables students and alumni to find internships, and parttime and full-time opportunities. It also offers customized recommendations based on career interests and is a direct link to over 120,000 unique employers from every industry and region.

WHY The Career Center hosts an annual internship fair in the fall and three spring fairs—one targeted to science and engineering majors, another to business and liberal arts majors, and an internship forum.

“Outdoor Pursuits is a great way to meet people and to learn new outdoor skills.”

Focus on fitness.

Heidi Grompe ’17 // I love anything that involves going outside. For me, extracurricular activities are extremely important and add balance to my life as a student. I have worked for the University’s Recreation Services and Outdoor Pursuits program since my freshman year. I lead outdoor rock climbing trips on weekends and school breaks to climbing areas all across Oregon and Washington in addition to teaching mountaineering and climbing skills classes. Being involved with these programs is a great way to decrease stress, meet awesome friends, and unwind after a long day. I feel so lucky to live in Portland where we have Mt. Hood right next to us. The mountain offers so much—backpacking and climbing in the summer, skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and mountaineering all year round. 29

34

Healthy living. At UP, we know you’ll work hard. To help you recharge, the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center offers plenty of ways to stay active. This stateof-the-art 73,000 square-foot facility offers something for everyone. There are exercise studios where free classes and activities such as kick-boxing, Zumba, indoor cycling, and yoga are held. The center features a climbing wall, free weights, and treadmills, as well as elliptical, bike, and stair machines. Suspended above three gyms is a track for walking and running. To support healthy, active minds the center offers nutrition workshops and stress management activities, as well as guided meditation classes. The center also houses our Outdoor Pursuits program offering helmets, tents, and sleeping bags for rent. Hiking, climbing, kayaking, snowboarding, and snow-shoeing trips are planned through the program. In addition, students can join dozens of intramural and club sports teams.

WHY Portland is nationally recognized for its green sensibilities, great food, and easy access to the outdoors.

UP?

35

“UP professors are devoted not only to teaching their students, but also to getting to know them inside and outside the classroom.”

Entrepreneurial spirit.

Taryn Delhotal ’15 // I was fortunate enough to take part in the University’s Entrepreneur Scholars Program, which exposed me to a range of opportunities related to business ventures, including traveling to New York City and Dubai to interview and meet other creative entrepreneurs. I also completed an Entrepreneur Scholars project that focused on opening a bar specializing in hard cider from the Pacific Northwest. The business plan involved marketing research, strategy, and financials on launching the bar. The project was presented at the University’s $100K Challenge Venture Competition. The program allowed me to see life outside of my major. After graduation, I was hired as a developer for Instrument, a digital brand and product innovation company in Portland. 36

Show your purple pride and root for one of our 16 NCAA Division I athletic teams including men’s basketball (coached by Portland Trail Blazer legend Terry Porter), two-time NCAA champion women’s soccer, defending West Coast Conference champions men’s soccer, women’s cross country and men’s tennis, and a dominant men’s cross country program (17 NCAA Championship appearances). 38

39

Close-knit community. It all starts with living on campus. Being in the residence halls is a vital part of the UP experience, and it puts you at the center of everything you need— from classes and labs to the library and dining services. But more importantly, you are part of a community—over 2,200 students live in our ten residence halls, including nearly every freshman. You will also find that it is a great way to meet new friends and study partners, as well as participate in hall events—from game nights and cooking events to excursions downtown. Each residence hall has a distinct style and personality, but all create friendships and memories that you’ll carry with you for life.

40

UP offers both co-ed and single-sex residence halls, and all have resident assistants on every floor as well as a hall director and a pastoral resident. The best way to find out which hall might be right for you is to talk with our student tour guides in the admissions office.

41

Visible from campus and downtown is Oregon’s iconic Mt. Hood.

42

World-class city. We think Portland is an amazing place to live. You’ll find great restaurants, cafÊs, and food carts; a vibrant music and theater scene; independent retailers and funky thrift shops; and professional sports teams. There are miles of hiking and biking trails, including the 5,100-acre Forest Park, which makes it easy to enjoy the outdoors right in the city. Portland also has a wealth of learning and employment opportunities. We are home to world-renowned businesses, as well as innovative small and medium-sized companies on their way up. Wherever you want to go, Portland’s transportation system helps you get there. Buses stop right outside campus, free shuttles take you to MAX Light Rail, and myriad bike lanes traverse the city.

WHY The campus is in a residential neighborhood overlooking the Willamette River and is only ten minutes from downtown.

“The city of Portland and the Pamplin School of Business have given me access to great networking and educational opportunities for my future.”

Portland connections.

Lucas Cummings ’19 // Living in the city of Portland has truly changed my life. Originally from New Hampshire, I wanted to go to college on the West Coast, and I immediately fell in love with the city and the University of Portland. Every weekend I try to do something fun outdoors around the Portland area. From hiking and camping to surfing, I love discovering unique and fun ways to explore Oregon. I have met many interesting and influential people during my time here. These connections, as well as help from the Franz Center, have allowed me to build a tiny house for a friend in need. I am now working with the city of Portland to start another tiny house project. Thanks to these experiences, as well as my relationships with UP professors, I am learning how to accomplish my dreams and achieve my ambitions. 44
