FACULT Y PROFILES

Lindsay Lancaster, Ph.D. assistant professor of nursing

“The majority of my clinical and research specialization focuses on various aspects of chronic pain: understanding the development, presentation, and treatment of complex chronic pain syndromes. Chronic pain affects at least 116 million American adults and disproportionally impacts vulnerable populations. These individuals are often stigmatized since the nervous system abnormalities underlying the painful condition are rarely visible externally. To better serve these patients I have focused on work to better understand the internal processes driving the pain, factors that perpetuate the cycle, and treatment modalities that address the complex interplay of physiologic, cognitive, and behavioral mechanisms. I am working with a research team from Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research led by Dr. Lynn DeBar, who was one of seven investigators to receive funding for the National Institutes

Pragmatic trials take place in actual health care systems rather than in controlled research settings, such as traditional clinical trials. of Health’s first pragmatic trials, on which I serve as a co-investigator. Pragmatic trials test interventions that are more likely to be implemented in the real world, and results are more generalizable to a broader population. Our project aims to activate patients’ use of psychosocial and physical coping strategies to decrease pain, improve functioning, and decrease opioid use along with providing integrative, interdisciplinary resources and support to primary care providers. My clinical and scientific work in the field of chronic pain has taught me both compassion and a style of thinking that strives to understand the depths of the processes around us; whether physiologic, scientific, or behavioral in nature. Working with our undergraduate and graduate students, I hope to instill this curiosity, this depth of thinking, and the tools necessary to solve complex problems. I enjoy working one-on-one with students or in small groups so that I can truly understand their unique styles of thinking, and as a result, frame our dialogue to best connect with their individual needs and learning goals.” 10

John Watzke, Ph.D. dean of the school of education

“In 2014, the School of Education took a bold step to establish itself as an educational resource for the region. Together with Matt Chapman, an alumnus and CEO of Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), we formed the Multnomah County Partnership for Education Research. This unique partnership provides high quality district-driven research to support the needs of six Multnomah County school districts. The initiative leverages the talent and resources of multiple education agencies and is a first for the University and the region. Our partnership allows us to answer real questions about program effectiveness, to access and analyze school data, and provides the basis for data-driven decision-making. It also allows our doctoral students to gain technical expertise, to be mentored in a real-world setting, and to position themselves as leaders of our K-12 schools upon graduation. With NWEA assistance, we have added new faculty and doctoral fellowships to support the partnership, another first for the institution.”

Nicole Ralston, Ph.D. assistant professor of education

“I joined the Multnomah County Partnership for Education Research as a new faculty member, bringing expertise as an educator and researcher. As an experienced classroom teacher, research coordinator, and instructional coach, I relish the opportunity to support our district partners by providing much-needed, district-driven research that will support educational change and improvement. Besides providing real-time research and program evaluation services to Multnomah County school districts, the partnership also builds capacity for sustained research during preparation of the School of Education’s doctoral candidates. These students provide dedicated work time to research and conduct analyses, allowing us to respond to more requests for our expertise and services. Rebecca Smith, a current doctoral fellow, noted, ‘My work is giving me a deep appreciation for the value of meaningful research that listens to the voices of leaders in our school districts.’ Preparing future leaders and supporting educational improvement are the goals of this partnership, and I am so fortunate to be a part of it.” 12

Mark Kennedy, Ph.D. professor of civil engineering

“I attribute much of what I do now to my love of water. My Ph.D. was in water quality monitoring, and I did lots of intensive sampling of rivers and used computer modeling to see what was happening. From there, I studied toxins leeching from landfills into ground water and water distribution systems so as to develop management strategies. I also conducted field investigations of ways to reduce pathogens in wastewater. More recently, since 1997, I’ve served on the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant Citizens Advisory Committee. But it was when I first took an interest in rainfall harvesting systems in developing countries that my focus switched to Central America.

As part of a summer research program, students traveled with me to Honduras to investigate sustainable water supply and sanitation. When I first came to UP, I became involved with Engineers Without Borders, a student engineering club that facilitates development projects in low-income countries. One project involved the club traveling to Guatemala to build a system that collected water from the roof and stored it in a concrete tank for a school. Other visits there allowed us to expand out to smaller systems for people’s houses. In Honduras we worked on drainage projects, installing culverts that don’t wash away in the rainy season. Culverts don’t sound glamorous, but people were getting hit by cars on the highways when the town’s roads were washed out. In 2012, Sharon Jones, our new engineering dean at that time, brought part of a National Science Foundation grant with her, which allowed students to travel to Honduras as part of a summer research program to look beyond rainwater harvesting to sustainable water supply and sanitation. This same research program created an opportunity for U.S. and Honduran students to work together in both countries. My hope is students can learn to use their engineering skills to help others in a respectful, sustainable way. You can’t just charge in and say, ‘I’m the engineer. Here’s your solution; have at it.’ There’s a proper way.” 15

Naveen Gudigantala, Ph.D. associate professor of business

“After completing my bachelor’s degree and MBA in India, I worked at a local retail bank and became fascinated with how technology was used to streamline business and to make it convenient for customers. I came to the U.S. and earned an M.S. degree and Ph.D., both in information systems, before joining UP in 2009. My current research includes the design and development of information systems to support consumer decision-making. The technology for this is called web-based decision support systems, and I study how to design, develop, and implement them effectively. I also research e-Commerce success factors that influence users’ intention to purchase on a website and factors that convert a website visitor into a buyer. If users don’t trust a website, the business will not work. I also am studying ethical issues surrounding the gray market for IT products, such as smart phones, laptops and cameras that

I hope to impart real skills to students so they can make a positive difference in the companies for whom they work. are often purchased for a ridiculously low price by consumers who are unaware that they are buying via unauthorized channels. While manufacturers do not want wholesalers to sell to partners outside the distribution channels, they sometimes sell anyway to make more money. The problem is that consumers may later experience a problem with these products, and the manufacturer may decline to honor the warranty. I train my students to use concepts, data, models, and tools to develop or use information systems to improve organizational processes and to make better decisions. I regularly involve Pamplin Fellows (graduate students with fellowships) in my research projects. I am also currently working with a student on a Dundon-Berchtold Initiative in Applied Ethics, and I advise undergraduates interested in majoring in operations and technology management. It is a great feeling to nurture students and see them become not only competent and confident individuals but also compassionate people who do great things in their careers.” 16

Maria Echenique, Ph.D. associate professor of spanish

“I was born in Bolivia and came to the United States as a 17-year-old exchange student so I could improve my English language skills. It proved to be a transformative experience, one that allowed me to see the world from a completely different perspective. I realized the power of language as a way to open doors to cultures. Mastering a different language for me was as exhilarating as reading a novel about a distant land or time. And now, I teach Spanish language and Latin American literatures and cultures. My research focuses on Latin American writers whose voices have been ignored or silenced for a long time — women, working class,

My aim is to introduce students to fresh perspectives so as to trigger their curiosity and to enhance their global understanding. indigenous peoples — and the stories they have to tell. In my doctoral dissertation I explored the little-known narrative work of 20th century Bolivian female authors and their literary tradition. I found that, during this period, women authors created a differentiated space for their writing. They chose to privilege the portrayal of the private, intimate world of female characters and to use domesticity as a prism through which they illuminate the public reality. Consequently, their work presents a critical, sometimes subversive reading of Bolivian history that includes traditionally invisible subjects such as women and the subaltern classes. Through the years I have expanded my research to other genres such as Testimonio, a form of literature born to denounce and resist the oppression and violence against the peoples of many regions in the continent during times of dictatorships and civil strife. I have published articles on these topics in journals devoted to Latin American literature and delivered presentations of my work at professional conferences. As a teacher, I feel like an ambassador of Latin America to this side of the world. It is a mission I take seriously since there is a great need to better understand the cultures and history of our neighboring countries to the south, whose influence becomes ever more important in this country.” 19

Andrew Downs, Ph.D. associate professor of psychology

“After completing my undergraduate studies in psychology and history, I worked for agencies that provided treatment to clients who were experiencing serious mental health problems, which compromised their ability to function. The clients were labeled as ‘mentally ill,’ a stigma that can result in terrible treatment in our society. It became painfully apparent to me that the way we approach mental health is a clear social justice issue that we are largely ignoring as a society, and I became inspired to try and do something to address it. My current research is focused on how to identify and prevent mental health problems. For example, we know physical activity can help prevent and treat mental health problems, but most people aren't active enough. So, I am working to identify psychological and societal factors that could help people increase their physical activity. I am also developing and testing screening measures that could

The way we approach mental health is a clear social justice issue — and one we largely ignore as a society. identify people who are at-risk for mental health problems so they can receive help before their functioning is severely compromised. Research clearly indicates that just as everyone gets physically ill, it also is perfectly normal for most people to experience mental health problems at some point in their life. It is my hope that we will move to a much more proactive approach in dealing with mental health — one that uses prevention and early identification to help people function at their optimal level. I hope my students develop an appreciation for the complexities of psychological science, and that they become critical observers of their own and others’ behavior, an important life skill that fosters compassion and respect. I include students in all aspects of my research, from initial development through publication. Some are inspired to pursue their own research as graduate students and professionals and others decide that the research world is not for them. Their decision is not what is important to me — what is important is that they make their choice from a place of knowledge and experience.” 20

Edward Valente, Ph.D. professor of chemistry

“I came to UP in 2009, after teaching at Mississippi College since 1983. My specialty is physical organic chemistry, which studies the mechanisms and structures of organic compounds. I work with a research group of five actively engaged undergraduate students. We synthesize new examples of the compounds, determine their structures, and study how readily they form cyclic structures, or rings. This is fundamental science — we study the system because it is at the frontier of this area of structural chemistry. It will further our general understanding of the structures and dynamics of open-cyclic systems. Chemistry is known as the ‘central science,’ and knowledge of chemistry lays a firm foundation for advanced studies in any area of material science — biology, biochemistry, engineering, physics, and

My current research focus is investigating the structural chemistry of a class of bifunctional organic compounds. medicine. In my approach to teaching, I want students to understand and use the language of chemistry, learn its principles and applications, and then, with appropriate laboratory activities, attach their own experience to the theoretical concepts I present to them. In carrying out a research project, it is important for students to appreciate that science is a human endeavor and a labor of mind and hands, but also that it is done in community. I am an overshadowing presence early in a student’s project, and even though I step back as the skills of the student develop, I stay close enough to ensure that the collaborative nature of the work is always evident. The developing project also needs to be explained in light of the evidence gathered, and tested against what is known by others. That connection back to the corpus of what is known allows us to advance our knowledge of what is newly discovered. I enjoy teaching and helping students discover their powers of logic, deductive reasoning, and argument, as well as working with undergraduate researchers who always bring their enthusiasm and interest to the lab and classroom.” 23

Faculty at the University of Portland take seriously their roles as scholars and educators. Through their research, idea generation, and scholarly inquiry, they bolster the University’s reputation and ensure our academic programs remain current and innovative for the students they teach.
