Designing programmes for real-world application
The COES learning design team strongly believes in providing students with an authentic learning experience that prepares them for unexpected and often complex scenarios experienced in real life. This commitment is reflected in every aspect of UPOnline programmes, from curriculum design to assessment strategies.
The design of UPOnline programmes is meticulously aligned to develop students’ academic knowledge alongside practical skills. This dual-focus approach ensures graduates are well-versed in theoretical concepts and adept at applying their knowledge in practical settings. This is particularly significant given the University’s reputation as a research-intensive institution, where the ability to contribute meaningfully to one’s field of study is highly valued. To this end, learning designers integrate learning outcomes that enhance students’ information processing, critical thinking, and problem-solving capabilities, preparing them for various career paths, including research and industry roles.
A vital component of the curriculum design process is incorporating continuous assessment. This approach allows for frequent, varied, and meaningful evaluation of student progress, ensuring that the learning experience is comprehensive and conducive to developing essential 21st-century skills and competencies. Feedback from students frequently highlights the acquisition of unexpected knowledge and skills, underscoring the value and impact of the learning experiences crafted by COES.
Adapting and innovating with ADDIE+R
The learning design team employs the ADDIE+R model, a tried and tested framework for instructional design, with thoughtful adaptations to meet the specific needs of UPOnline programmes. This model guides the team through the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and review, ensuring that each programme is rigorously structured and responsive to the needs of students and industry.
The development phase brings the curriculum to life through multimedia resources such as videos, podcasts, and interactive scenarios, all hosted on the University’s BlackBoard Ultra platform (clickUP). This is followed by a meticulous quality assurance process, both internal and external, culminating in the implementation phase, where facilitators are equipped to deliver engaging and supportive online instruction.
A cycle of continuous improvement
Throughout these processes, the commitment to continuous review and improvement remains paramount. Feedback from students and facilitators and insights from subject matter experts and educational authorities inform ongoing programme enhancements. This reflective practice ensures that COES’ online offerings remain at the cutting edge of educational innovation, meeting the evolving needs of students and the broader community.
Upholding quality assurance
UP’s commitment to upholding the highest online learning standards is crystallised in the Quality Assurance Guidelines for UPOnline programmes. This document, a blueprint for excellence, ensures that every UPOnline course delivers an educational experience that meets and exceeds the expectations of students and accrediting bodies.
At its core, the guidelines aim to establish a proactive framework for monitoring and enhancing the quality of UPOnline programmes, applied University-wide across all faculties. This proactive stance ensures excellence, from curriculum conceptualisation to the evaluation of modules, focusing on preventative measures rather than retrospective corrections.
TRANSFORMING ONLINE EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA
COES is committed to driving learning excellence through online platforms with its fully online programmes. To help boost the academic performance of students and enhance engagement, COES has successfully introduced two key online initiatives: the Marketing Management (BEM 120) Gateway module and the Online Preparatory Mathematics module
Gateway module
The Marketing Management (BEM 120) Gateway module, launched by the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, represents a strategic transformation in online education, moving away from the traditional summer school model to a fully online and intensive four-week module. This module is designed to increase student throughput and deepen curriculum engagement through innovative online delivery methods that encourage a comprehensive understanding of learning materials.
Its goal is to improve the student throughput rate for BEM 120, a mandatory prerequisite for all subsequent Marketing Management modules. This online Gateway module provides students with a more in-depth engagement with the curriculum when compared to the traditional in-person summer schools, allowing for a deeper understanding of the material.
The module is meticulously crafted to adhere to UP's stringent policies on curriculum design, educational technology, and teaching standards, ensuring a quality online learning experience.
This pioneering project by the Department of Marketing Management represents a commendable stride towards enhancing the quality and accessibility of education, ensuring that students not only progress in their academic journeys but are also better prepared for the challenges of their future studies.
Promising outcomes
The inaugural run of the Gateway module BEM 120 in 2022 saw 42 enrolments. This fully online approach offers numerous benefits: lecturers and students can participate from anywhere, even on holiday, eliminating the need to come to campus or find accommodation. Students can redo their modules to catch up by the time the following year’s modules start, ensuring they have a stronger foundation for future courses. This enhances their chances of passing and being successful in the following year.
Feedback from the facilitator and students has been overwhelmingly positive. The facilitator noted the ease of online module facilitation compared to traditional formats, attributing this to the comprehensive preparation during the design phase. Students highlighted the engaging nature of the module, appreciating the blend of practical questions and narrated videos, which aided in content comprehension. The module’s structure, emphasising self-paced learning and abundant support, was particularly lauded.
Students strongly recommended the Gateway module, citing its engaging delivery and the effectiveness of its pedagogical approach. The challenges noted were primarily related to time management and internet access, which will inform future iterations of the module. The success of BEM 120 as a Gateway offering showcases the potential of online modules to support student throughput. It sets a precedent for future endeavours in online learning at UP.
What students say
I recommend this course to other students because it is very engaging. The lecturer’s real-life examples helped me understand the content better and engage more with the work. The way the course was presented also encouraged me to work in a timely manner because of the deadlines. Overall, the module was very engaging. I understood more of the work better because I could read the content by myself and because the lecturer provided narrated videos to explain the content better.
Rethinking mathematics preparation with COES online module
Transitioning from high school to university mathematics has been a notable challenge for students enrolling in mathematics-intensive degrees at UP. Despite possessing reasonable Grade 12 results, many students need to prepare for the rigour of first-year mathematics courses. COES and the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences initiated the Online Preparatory Mathematics (OPM) module to address this gap. This innovative approach aims to smooth the transition to tertiary-level mathematics for provisionally accepted students in engineering and mathematics-intensive programmes, ultimately enhancing their conceptual understanding and throughput rates.
Launched in November 2019 for incoming matriculants, the OPM module was designed using action research and e-learning principles. The module focuses on six critical themes essential for first-year success, offering a blend of theoretical explanations, video tutorials, exercises, and self-assessment. This comprehensive approach allows students to engage with the material at their own pace, addressing misconceptions and reinforcing their understanding in a supportive, online environment.
The Online Preparatory Mathematics module represents a forward-thinking solution to a longstanding educational challenge. By bridging the gap between high school and university mathematics, the OPM module not only aids in improving student throughput rates but also contributes to a deeper conceptual understanding that benefits students in their subsequent mathematical studies.
What students say
Feedback gathered from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with students highlighting the module's role in boosting their confidence and understanding of mathematics. The flexibility of online learning, coupled with the ability to revisit content, was frequently mentioned as a significant advantage. However, students also voiced challenges related to time management and internet access, suggesting areas for future enhancement.
I like the online module because I could complete it at my own pace, and try to understand the concept on my own time. Explaining it to myself helps a lot.
It refreshes your memory about the math you did in high school, while also filling you in on topics your school’s curriculum might not have covered.
ENHANCING ONLINE LEARNING AND SUPPORT
COES is dedicated to improving the online learning experience for fully online students through solid support systems and innovative digital platforms. COES helps students by making application processes easier, providing help when needed, and giving extra support to students who might be struggling. Using the latest technology and offering personalised help ensures that online students have everything they need to do well in their studies and workplaces.

This initiative underscored the team’s ability to support UPOnline’s expansion and ensure a seamless student experience from start to finish.
Innovative solutions for student engagement and support
The team implemented a new process for managing Extensions of Study Periods to address challenges such as students exceeding their two-year study period. Additionally, they launched At-Risk Reports to identify and support at-risk students early in their studies, demonstrating a proactive approach to student success.
Financial safeguards and efficiencies
The introduction of a new External Bursary process set strict guidelines to ensure the validation of bursary letters, safeguarding UPOnline and the University’s financial interests. Furthermore, UPOnline staff rebates were introduced, offering a tangible benefit to staff members pursuing qualifications via the UPOnline offering.
Streamlining communications and support
The UPOnline team has created a substantial repository of template emails for commonly asked questions, resulting in efficient and productive responses. The Online Systems and Student Administration team can now reset portal passwords for UPOnline students, providing a quicker turnaround time for students’ requests. This improvement eliminates the need for assistance requests to go through the Student Service Centre.
