Second Year Experience Abroad Program This structured program is a unique initiative that has been specifically designed for the Class of 2014. A collaborative effort between USD’s Departments of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, the Second Year Experience Abroad Program offers students the opportunity to study abroad in one of four truly exceptional locations: Barcelona, Spain; Florence, Italy; Hong Kong, China; and London, England. Academic Component Students will earn a total of four units of credit by participating in this program. All students are required to enroll in a one-unit, interdisciplinary global studies course that takes place during the fall 2011 semester. This course is designed to help students develop civic and global awareness and prepare students for the second year study abroad

While on their international journey, students will earn three units of academic credit by completing one core curriculum course. Disciplines that will be offered include art history, ethics, history, language (third semester), literature and religious studies. Integrated Learning Component The Second Year Experience Abroad Program is an integrated learning component that gives students the opportunity to interact with USD staff and faculty while participating in a variety of cultural and social activities abroad. Staff and administrators from USD’s International Center and Office of Student Affairs serve as on-site staff in each program location and are responsible for organizing small student groups to engage in cultural and social activities. They will also lead small group discussion and reflection. As early as their second semester on campus, students will begin to interact with the staff in preparation for their experience abroad.
