MISSION, VISION, VALUES, CATHOLIC IDENTITY AND PURPOSE

The first day of New Faculty Orientation prioritizes articulating the unique history, mission and vision of USD as well as fostering alignment between these aspects of our institutional story with the unique history, mission and vision of new faculty members. Highlights of the day include remarks from Provost Baker, a description of our Liberal Arts foundation from Dean Noelle Norton (College of Arts and Sciences) and Associate Dean Rick Olson (Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering), and a reflection from Assistant Professor Victor Carmona (Theology and Religious Studies). Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on what drew them to USD and to share with one another how they came to recognize their vocation to academic life. This initial day of the program also includes an overview of some of the characteristics of Catholic higher education that are distinctive (i.e., holistic education, community, social justice, etc.) as well as how those are instantiated here at USD.

One of the most fundamental aspects of Catholic higher education, and Catholicism more broadly, is its commitment to the intrinsic value of each human being as created in the image of God. The person’s sacred worth obligates us to promote conditions consistent with human dignity and reject and reform conditions which threaten that dignity. Commitment to the dignity of persons is the foundation for social justice, anti-racism and other efforts to create a more just, humane, and sustainable world. Day 2 of New Faculty Orientation emphasizes the many ways that USD strives to honor, protect, and promote human dignity - on our campus and beyond - with special attention devoted to diversity, equity, and inclusion and the Horizon Project. Representatives from University Ministry, Cross-Border Initiatives, Center for Educational Excellence and the Athletic Department will illustrate some of the many ways in which the dignity and full development of our students is supported.
