“ We want those who do good in the world to have the wind at their back, with the knowledge and tools they need to help people, communities and the planet thrive.” — Emily Young, PhD, Executive Director, The Nonprofit Institute
San Diegans have found a lifeline in our nonprofit community for the delivery of critical services to our children, families and communities. These people and organizations do noble work and are facing unprecedented challenges. Our latest research finds that COVID-19 has left most nonprofits in San Diego County to grapple with decreasing revenues, staff layoffs or furloughs and an increasing demand for services. Community leaders and organizations have turned to The Nonprofit Institute (NPI) to bolster their capacity and resilience. We have stepped up to the challenge by redoubling our efforts to provide the professional support and technical assistance needed by nonprofits to perform their missions for social good and endure as a community safety net. Now, as The Nonprofit Institute helps position leaders and organizations to best serve San Diegans at a time of unrivaled necessity, we need your help more than ever. The need for our services is far greater than our current capacity. In fact, our reliance upon fees-for-services limits our ability to respond to community needs. Furthermore, we have few discretionary funds to innovate or quickly react to critical issues. Since our inception, endowment gifts have been catalytic to our anchor institution work at the University of San Diego — to develop ethical leadership and missiondriven organizations to address humanity’s urgent challenges. With this in mind, Paul Eichen ’12 (MA) and his wife, Susan Flieder, have issued a challenge to the San Diego community to raise $2.5 million for The Nonprofit Institute. They, in turn, will match every dollar raised. Paul and Susan have a long history with The Nonprofit Institute, dating back to their decision to enroll at the University of San Diego for graduate education more than a decade ago. Both are certified in Nonprofit Leadership and Management. Paul has a master’s degree from our Nonprofit Leadership and Management program. Their generous $2.5 million challenge match, once completed, will enable us to more than triple the value of our endowment.

WHO WE ARE
WHAT WE DO
The Nonprofit Institute was founded in 2002 in University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences to provide an MBA-type “pracademic” program for nonprofit professionals. With our academic emphasis on student consulting for nonprofits, we quickly grew into much more than a graduate program.
DEVELOP LEADERS
The Nonprofit Institute now stands as a complementary, but separate entity from the graduate program, with a mission to create knowledge and provide nonprofit professionals and their organizations with training, coaching and consulting to make positive change in our communities. We are now home to nationally renowned programs in nonprofit leadership and management. As our work continues to grow and evolve, so does our business model. The Nonprofit Institute used to receive a portion of its funding from university tuition. We are now a self-sustaining institute within the university. The shifting business model drives a need for more diverse funding. Building our endowment is a critical part of our efforts. Over the past few years, we have been working to diversify our revenues.
We offer a variety of leadership programs that develop effective leaders who are prepared to meet the complex challenges they face in their communities, their social circles and in today’s global organizations.
STRENGTHEN ORGANIZATIONS
We connect faculty and graduate students to a variety of nonprofit organizations and philanthropic entities to provide them with the tools necessary to strengthen their organizations.
CREATE AND SHARE KNOWLEDGE
We provide research that builds organizational capacity, highlights the state of nonprofits and philanthropy in our region, and informs decisions about our quality of life.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND SUPPORT
We provide scholarship support and graduate assistantships to students in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences and elsewhere on campus. Over the past five years, we have provided 10 graduate students with more than $1 million in financial support. We stepped up our financial commitment to students by 40% during the pandemic.

Paul Eichen and Susan Flieder are passionate about giving back and making a difference in the community. In 1995, Paul founded the Rokenbok Toy Company. Rokenbok manufactured a legacy-quality toy system focused on creativity, imagination and learning. In the 1980s, he helped launch Proxima, a highly successful start-up that developed leading-edge computer data-projection equipment. In 2015, Paul took what he learned from his nonprofit graduate studies and founded Kid Spark Education. Kid Spark works with educators to provide fun, hands-on engineering programs that help children — especially those from underrepresented communities — develop STEM identity and technology fluency. Susan Flieder has also applied her nonprofit education to her community engagements and philanthropy, having supported and served on the boards of many local nonprofit organizations. She divides her time between raising their two children and volunteering in various community endeavors.
“ We want to leave a positive legacy for our children and future generations by investing in the entire nonprofit sector. Our challenge gift to The Nonprofit Institute enables us to do just that.” — Susan Flieder
