Fall 2020 Campus Experience
FALL 2020 MOVE-IN
All students who are participating in the Fall 2020 semester in person are strongly encouraged to be tested for COVID-19 within 5-7 days before moving in.
Each residential student is permitted no more than two (2)-support people at move-in (two family members or one family member and one friend, etc.). USD encourages the two (2) support people to be tested for COVID-19 5-7 days prior to move-in.
To encourage physical distancing and to reduce the number of individuals moving onto campus at any given time, move-in times will be assigned, and arrivals will be staggered.
Residential Life will communicate with residents directly about move-in later this summer, and more details will be posted on the Office of Residential Life’s website. Due to the need to control move-in timing and frequency, early move-in, prior to official move-in dates will not be permitted. Students are permitted to have two support people assist them with moving their belongings, but all visitors to the community must wear a face covering, maintain physical distance from others in the building, and aim to drop off items and leave within the designated times.
PACKING FOR FALL 2020
Pack intentionally. You and your two support people (2) will need to move your items into your room on your own. Due to the uncertainties of COVID-19, students are encouraged to bring what they need to stay on campus and limit travel. County guidance may require USD to move to fully remote learning and engagement with limited notice. Please pack in a manner that will allow you to pivot quickly. In addition to packing what you typically would for a new semester, please plan to bring the following items:
Enough multilayered face coverings to last between loads of laundry. Each multilayered face covering should be changed on a daily basis. An alternative would be to ensure you have enough disposable face coverings to last throughout the semester. Hand sanitizer to be used whenever you do not have access to soap and water. The hand sanitizer should consist of at least 60% alcohol. Disinfecting cleaning products to clean high-touch items in your living area, as well as to be used to wipe down desks, tables, etc. in dining areas, classrooms, etc. as you desire. Fans to enhance air circulation in your living spaces.
DAILY SCREENING
Each day you will receive an email or SMS text from Qualtrics. The email or text will contain a self-declaration daily health check that asks faculty members, staff, and students to report: 1) health symptoms, 2) recent travel and 3) exposure to others with COVID-19.
Screening that rules out symptoms, travel and exposure will generate an automated notification that certifies the person to enter campus on that day. *Note thatstudents who live on campus are expected to remain in theirrooms until theyreceive the notification.
All students, faculty and staff must be screened daily before entering any campus building.
If your temperature is below 100.0°F, you will receive a wristband that will allow you to have access to buildings, classrooms, laboratories, dining spaces and other areas on campus. If you do have a temperature in excess of 100.0°F, a secondary temperature reading may be taken by waiting 2-3 minutes and re-scanning.
Students with temperatures of 100.0°F or more will be prohibited from being on campus and will be advised to return home or to their residence hall and contact the Student Health Center; student employees must also notify their supervisor and the Student Health Center.
If you are taking public transportation to get to USD, wear a multilayered face covering and maintain physical distance from other passengers, if possible. Once on campus, wash your hands as soon as you can.

CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE
USD will operate under a low-density model for the upcoming semester. Therefore, we have to reduce the number of students on campus and in classrooms at one time. This means that some courses will be offered entirely remotely. For classes that have too many students enrolled to ensure physical distance is maintained in the classroom, students will be given a rotation schedule that will indicate what days you can be “in-person” and what days you will participate via Zoom.
Our facilities management team has visited every classroom on campus and measured the seating capacity while maintaining physical distancing guidelines. Sit only in the chairs indicated.
To protect the health and safety of the community, students, faculty, staff and visitors must wear face coverings over their mouths and noses while on campus in all hallways, public spaces, classrooms, and other common areas. Signage in classrooms will indicate no food or drink in the classroom and this is a general expectation. It is reasonable there may be times individuals need to quickly lift or remove their face covering to hydrate with water or nourish themselves in nondesignated dining spaces. Please limit this behavior in an effort to support the well-being of the whole community and when possible inform your instructor prior to engaging in such behavior during an in-person class.
The university has enhanced the technology in many classrooms this summer. This will provide for an enhanced remote experience.
The time between classes has been increased from 10 to 20 minutes for the fall semester. This will help reduce crowding in transitional spaces such as hallways. In addition, it will provide time for you to sanitize your desk or workspace. It will also allow for additional time to transition between in-person and remote access if you have back-to-back classes. If you are transitioning between in-person and virtual classes, there will be multiple spaces on-campus to engage in virtual learning.
Faculty members will still have office hours and be available for individual questions, advising, and mentoring sessions. For fall 2020, professors will likely conduct meetings and office hours virtually.
Courses that are all remote will have an “R” next to the section number on your schedule. Most classes will be delivered using a combination of in-person and Zoom.
All classes will accommodate students who cannot return to campus but want to continue course work at USD. There will be many ways to support you.
In libraries, maintain at least 6 feet of physical distance and wear your multilayered face covering.
RESIDENTIAL EXPERIENCE
You are encouraged to bring only the items you need for the fall semester. Pack lightly in the event USD is required to pivot from our current plan and move exclusively to remote learning.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or the inside of your elbow if you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue properly and clean any surfaces that may have been affected. Properly wash your hands or use hand sanitizer afterward.
As usual, students are responsible for cleaning their own bedrooms, apartments and other noncommon spaces. Students should follow CDC recommendations when cleaning their individual spaces. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces (e.g., tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, light switches, phones, tablets, touch screens, remote controls, keyboards, handles, desks, etc.) daily in their bedrooms and other non-common spaces. The CDC recommendations provide information for cleaning different types of surfaces, including porous surfaces, non-porous surfaces, and electronics. Students are responsible for bringing appropriate cleaning supplies.
In order to limit the spread of COVID-19, it is necessary to limit contact between people, particularly in the residence halls, which have high density. Accordingly, absolutely no guests from outside the university, or students who live in other buildings, will be allowed in residence halls during the 2020–21 academic year.
Students are encouraged to visit with others outdoors or in communal spaces on campus and in the community as current guidelines allow and while following all preventative measures.
DINING EXPERIENCE
Our dining services staff have taken additional precautions to ensure the well-being of our dining facilities and services. Watch video.
The density of all dining spaces on campus has been reduced and students are encouraged to dine outside as much as possible.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Club Meetings
General Body Meetings ○ All General Body Meetings will be hosted virtually at least through the fall semester.
Requirements for the spring semester will be determined at a later date. Executive Board and Committee Meetings ○ Executive board meetings and committee meetings with 10 or fewer students can be held in person in reservable spaces when permitted by county guidance.
Meeting Guidelines ○ No meetings may be deemed “mandatory” by a student organization, so members may prioritize their health. ○ All in-person meetings must also provide a virtual option. → Student organization members will need to provide the technology for virtual meeting components if the technology is not available in the space reserved through University Scheduling. → If student organizations do not have access to the necessary technology (laptops, adapters, etc.), they can work with their advisor to rent the necessary items from Media Services.
Events
When San Diego County Health Department permits gatherings, student organizations may host events on-campus and off-campus, as long as the event adheres to the gathering protocols (for the number of individuals permitted to gather, location of gatherings, face coverings, physical distancing, etc.).
Virtual events are encouraged, when possible. ○ Events at large venues (concerts, comedians, speakers, conferences, etc.) will only be hosted/ attended remotely. ○ On- or off-campus retreats, conventions and conferences will only be hosted/attended remotely.
Hybrid events, which include some in-person and some virtual components, may be offered for more individuals than permitted by county orders, but the in-person gathering must not exceed the number of individuals permitted to gather by the county. These may be via a “grab-and-go” style, mimicking “pick-up” methods for stores.
Pick-up times should be pre-scheduled as much as possible to minimize crowding the pick-up area. “Grab-and-go” events should have an alternative pick up option for students who are vulnerable or feeling sick.
No events may be deemed “mandatory” by a student organization, so members may prioritize their health.
In-Person/Hybrid Meeting and Event Guidelines
Pre-Event Planning ○ Student organizations will be required to have some members trained as “Event Managers” in order to have in-person or hybrid events. This training will be included in the Student
Organization Conference and will be available during the semester. Check with the Student
Activities and Involvement Center for details. ○ In-person meetings/events require advance RSVPs to ensure limited attendance.
During Meeting/Event ○ All COVID-19 health and safety standards established by the CDC, county or USD will be utilized for all in-person or hybrid events. Students will be advised of the current standards during the event registration process. → Multilayered face coverings and physical distancing will be required, following USD’s oncampus protocol.
The student organization hosting the meeting/event is responsible to monitor and ensure participants are in compliance with prevention strategies. → An Event Manager trained in COVID-19 prevention measures must be in attendance for the duration of all in-person or hybrid events. (The number of Event Managers required per organization/event is still in development, we will provide an update soon.) → Set-up must follow space guidelines provided by the scheduler. → Marking indicators will be required for events that necessitate a line. → Ensure participants immediately depart when the event is over in a socially distant manner. Must follow entry/exit guidelines provided by Campus Scheduling for the spaces.
Attendance should be recorded and retained by the student organization for all in-person meetings/events. → A member of the Student Activities and Involvement staff or other designated official may request a copy of the meeting attendance at any time during the semester in order to assist with university contact tracing, in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Event Registration ○ Event registration will be required for ALL meetings and events both in-person and virtual. ○ Event schedulers will still be required to complete the online 2020-2021 Event Planner
Training. ○ The Student Org Events Panel will be held in a virtual format. Student Activities and
Involvement will continue to require student hosts to use this venue for event questions and approval.
Funding ○ Associated Student Government Budget Committee (ASGBC) will continue to meet virtually in the fall semester. ○ Funding guidelines will be updated to align with new student organization protocols. These guidelines will be available prior to the first ASGBC meeting.
Graduate Student Organizations ○ Graduate Student Organizations will follow similar guidelines with further details shared in organization training and questions to be directed to Graduate Student Life at gradlife@sandiego.edu.
Student Organization Accountability
Each student organization plays a role in protecting the health of the USD community and the protocols and procedures outlined above were developed to prioritize our community’s well-being. Violation of student organization guidelines will result in a referral to the student organization conduct process through the Associated Student Government’s Judicial Branch. Violations by individual students will be documented and referred to the Office of Ethical Development and Restorative Practices.
OFF-CAMPUS
During this health pandemic, it is imperative that students refrain from organizing, hosting or attending events, parties, or other social gatherings off-campus.
While it can be very tempting to take off your multilayered face covering and relax your prevention efforts, please remember your exposure to others follows you in all environments.
Gathering in groups larger than the county recommends at the current time places you, as well as your faculty members, friends, and USD employees at risk of contracting COVID-19.
It is critical to follow all San Diego County guidance and policies as you consider what you do off-campus.
TRAVEL
Students will generally not be permitted to participate in university-sponsored travel in fall 2020; a decision about spring 2021 will be made in the mid- or late-fall term.
Students from across the United States and around the world will be welcomed back to campus this fall 2020 semester (barring any federal or state restrictions).
Once the term begins, USD strongly advises students to refrain from personal travel until such time as they return home or move elsewhere after the fall semester has concluded. This means that students should refrain from travel over weekends, or otherwise from the time they arrive at the start of the fall term until the time they depart at the end of the semester.
