NEW TORERO FAMILY CALENDAR JULY 2017 – JUNE 2018

The Office of Parent and Family Relations Welcomes You! Meet our team! We’re here to help! It is our goal that you, as a Torero family member and part of the USD community, are aware of the services our office provides to ease your student’s transition to USD.

From left: Regina Griffing ’12, assistant director; Renda Quinn ’86, director; Allyson Meyer ’16, executive assistant

PARENT AND FAMILY RELATIONS WEBSITE: Visit our website to learn about on-campus and regional events, the Parent Ambassador Program, the USD Parents Facebook page and more. SUMMER SEND-OFFS: Summer Send-Offs (SSOs) are pre-orientation socials held near your hometown. They are signature events where you can get to know incoming and current Torero families. To register for your local SSO, go to the “Programs/Events” tab on the Parent and Family Relations website. TORERO CLUBS: Torero Clubs are regional groups of alumni, parents, students and USD friends. To see upcoming events and connect with the Torero community in your area, go to toreronetwork.sandiego.edu. PARENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM: Become a USD Parent Ambassador to volunteer your time at regional and on-campus events such as OLÉ! Weekend, Homecoming and Family Weekend, Grandparents’ Weekend, and various admissions activities. To join the program, go to the “Get Involved” tab on the Parent and Family Relations website.

The only gift too small is no gift at all. If together we give, together we grow. A donation of any amount can make a difference in the lives of future Toreros. No gift is too small to make an impact. Make your gift today.

USD PARENTS FACEBOOK FAN PAGE: Stay connected and become a fan of the USD Parents Facebook page. PARENT MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTER: Each month during the academic year, a newsletter detailing current USD news and events will arrive to your email inbox. To sign up, go to the “Publications” tab on the Parent and Family Relations website.

VISITING SAN DIEGO BARTELL HOTELS University of San Diego has formed a partnership with Bartell Hotels. Richard Bartell, a School of Law alumnus, has opened the doors of his eight premier hotels to the USD community. The USD–Bartell Hotels partnership means you receive a special rate when you book your stay at one of the conveniently located Bartell Hotels in San Diego. A portion of the room cost comes back to USD to support student scholarships, promote university events and marketing efforts and create community awareness about the partnership.

“We’re opening our doors to you and contributing to USD every time you visit.” — Richard Bartell ’75 School of Law

To take advantage of these special rates and USD family amenities, visit bartellhotels.com/ usdpartnership or call 800.345.9995 to book your stay at any of the Bartell Hotels.

Class schedules released. Your first-year student should receive his or her class schedule and Living Learning Community (LLC) assignment by the end of this month. Their LLC and courses are selected based on the First-Year Student Academic Questionnaire. If your student has any concerns, he or she will meet with his or her academic advisor during OLÉ! Weekend and will be able to make changes at that time.

Interested in viewing your student’s records? Through the MySanDiego portal FERPA authorization, your student can grant you access to view his or her records on your personalized MyUSDStudent portal. For a step-by-step how-to, visit the “Resources” tab on the Parent and Family Relations website. Student portal: my.sandiego.edu Website: sandiego.edu/parents

Get connected. Don’t forget to watch the Parent Webcast, Supporting Your Student’s Transition on August 1. If you don’t catch it live, you can see the recorded video through your student’s portal. my.sandiego.edu

Academic Experience

So much to do! Where to start?

Transitioning to USD

Encourage your student to start building relationships with professors. It is never too early. Advise your student to visit professors during office hours to get questions answered!

The campus is full of activities and opportunities to meet students, such as Torero Welcome Week beginning Sept. 6 and the Alcalá Bazaar on Sept. 12. Campus Recreation also offers intramural sports clubs and recreation/fitness classes. Urge your student to get involved!

Your student may undergo an emotional roller coaster. Refer to the “W-Curve” to put your student’s transition into perspective. Also, Residential Life will conduct Third Week Check-Ins beginning the week of Sept. 18. All first-year students will attend a small community meeting with the USD Wellness staff, providing a space for dialogue about wellness and their transition to USD.

Making Healthy Choices

“Get involved!” is probably the best advice.

All first-year students are required to complete Part 2 of MyStudentBody, a mandatory two-part education course, by Oct. 27. Visit the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion website for complete course information and fines associated with noncompliance.

New students may begin to experience bouts of homesickness around this time. Encourage your student to get connected to the USD community by joining a club or organization, or by attending on-campus events. To see all clubs offered at USD, visit the Student Leadership, Involvement and Changemaking website. And don’t forget to attend Homecoming and Family Weekend!

Staying on campus for Thanksgiving?

Midterms already?

Students must confer with their resident assistant about plans to stay on campus during the Thanksgiving break. International students are encouraged to consult with the International Center for suggestions on how to spend the holiday break. There will be a Thanksgiving Feast on Nov. 23 in Mission Crossroads for residents remaining on campus.

Students can find out about available tutoring or sign up for Student Success Coaching in the Center for Student Success. Also encourage your student to utilize faculty office hours as they prepare for midterm and final exams. sandiego.edu/usdcss

Time to register for spring courses! Students should meet with their academic advisors and review Degree Audit on their portal to see which courses are required and prepare for spring class registration.

Finals are around the corner!

Need a ride?

Students are preparing for final exams — anxiety and stress are high. The Center for Health and Wellness Promotion is a great place to learn strategies to stay stress-free. Also, look for the different activities planned by the Torero Program Board (TPB) to help students take a study break.

If your student needs a ride to the San Diego International Airport, we recommend Super Shuttle. Super Shuttle offers special rates to USD students. Also, many students simply share a taxi, Lyft or Uber ride. For more information, email:

Congratulations to our graduates and to their families and supporters!

Does your student need a summer job or internship?

Too many things going on at the same time?

Send your love and support with a care package.

The Career Development Center can help with job or internship searches. Encourage your student to make an appointment or simply walk in!

Students can better manage multiple demands by meeting with their advisors, talking with their resident assistants and exploring healthy choices from the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion.

The USD Torero Store has a great selection of care packages. Consider sending your student a “Good luck with finals week! care package.

Have a wonderful and safe summer vacation!!!

Enjoy the summer and your student’s homecoming. Your student is home for the summer months. Listen to reflections on the past year, noting accomplishments and challenges, as well as the balancing of both old and new friendships.

Keep your student connected.

Parent Ambassadors

Encourage your student to take advantage of opportunities next year. Students who remain connected to programs, resources and groups designed to enhance learning will be off to a great second year at USD.

Become a USD Parent Ambassador and volunteer on campus or at regional events such as Summer Send-Offs, OLÉ! Weekend, Homecoming and Family Weekend, and more.
