29th Annual All Faith Service

TOGETHER IN

Transition: Cultivating Community in Uncertain Times

Thursday, February 10, 2022 Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre

As a contemporary and engaged Catholic university, the University of San Diego is proud to celebrate the 29th anniversary of the All Faith Service.

Since 1994, the entire campus community has gathered in an intentional way at the beginning of the spring semester to pray together. Echoing the Mass of the Holy Spirit that begins each academic year in the fall semester, the All Faith Service serves as a signature event that acknowledges our spiritual foundations and our diverse community. The All Faith Service reminds us that our lives, both at USD and off campus, are intertwined with people of a variety of faiths. And while we do not all understand God in the same way, we can experience and celebrate the similarities shared with other faiths, while retaining the integrity of our respective faiths. The All Faith Service embodies the Catholic teaching that what is true and holy in these various religious traditions reflect, through different lenses, truths that enlighten all people. Our theme this year is “Together in Transition: Cultivating Community in Uncertain Times.” To say these past two years have been difficult would be an understatement. We have been and continue to be in a constant state of immense change, all of us having suffered losses, and ongoing uncertainty taxes our ability to cope. From where can we draw wisdom about how to proceed? The founder of the Catholic Worker movement, Dorothy Day wrote in her autobiography that “we have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.” Day was insistent that the only way to a more peaceful and just world was through participation in community. At USD, we hold creating a diverse and inclusive community as a core value and as essential to our mission. And yet, community does not arise on its own; it must be nurtured and protected so that it may grow. Through prayer, song, memories, chants and blessings may we be inspired to cultivate communities of peace, justice and love that will be able to sustain us through whatever the future holds.

Oyod-Oyod (Swaying) USD Gamelan Ensemble Meghan Hynson, PhD Director, USD Department of Music Visiting Assistant Professor For Hindus in Bali, Indonesia, religious rituals are particularly important during times of uncertainty and transition. They gather the community together and create a space for sharing, making sense of current events, and facing all that life has to offer together. Each is carried out with a spirit of community participation known as gotong royong. This “mutual assistance” is dependent on what particular skills an individual has to offer the community. Some cook ceremonial food, while others make offerings or clean the temple. Artists and musicians contribute their performances as an offering to the gods and the ancestors. Each person brings their unique gifts and everyone offers what they can through ngayah, or “selfless service,” done for the common good. Muslim Reflection
