Welcome, parents and families! The University of San Diego welcomes parents and families of first-year and transfer students! We are pleased your student decided to attend USD and we are committed to supporting you. If you have any questions during the weekend, don’t hesitate to reach out to our wonderful Parent and Family Relations team, parent ambassadors and alumni volunteers stationed throughout campus.

Since there are different events held for the parents and families of first-year students and transfer students, be sure to navigate this program according to what best applies to you and your family.

Campus Card Services

Hahn University Center (UC), Room 127 Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday – Sunday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

If your student uploaded a headshot over the summer, he/she will receive his/her Torero ID card at move-in. Commuters and students who did not upload a photo may get their Torero ID card at Campus Card Services.

Mail Center Move-In Pickup

Students living on campus may visit the Mail Center Move-In Pickup location to pick up any packages sent to their university address prior to arrival. The Mail Center will be closed on Labor Day.

One Stop Student Center

Hahn University Center (UC), Room 126 Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The One Stop Student Center has representatives from Student Accounts, the Office of Financial Aid and the Registrar available to answer your questions.

Parents and guests who did not preregister can purchase a participation package at the Parent and Family Information Center. USD Athletics Tailgate Event Ticket This ticket is only for the USD Athletics Tailgate and the USD women’s volleyball game on Saturday, Sept. 1. If you purchased a Weekend Package, there is no need to purchase a Tailgate Event Ticket. Pricing: Adult Ticket (13 years and older): $25 Youth Ticket (12 years and younger): $15

First-Year Students and Their Families Only Today’s activities are for first-year students and their families only. If you are moving your new first-year student in this morning, please refer to the Move-In Memo your student received by email for move-in times and more. Don’t forget to visit the Parent and Family Information Center. See page 2 for locations. 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.

First-Year Resident Student Move-In Assigned residence hall Make sure to stop by the Family Check-In table that corresponds to your student’s residence hall to receive your welcome bag and any prepurchased package materials. Note: Family Check-In is separate from Student Check-In. For students who finish moving in early, see page 1. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Lunch

Lunch is available for new students and their family members on campus. New students eat for free at Pavilion Dining in the Student Life Pavilion (SLP) with their lanyard and name tag. For families looking for additional options, please visit an information table (in front of the SLP and the Paseo de Colachis) for on- and off-campus recommendations. 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

New Student and Family Welcome Jenny Craig Pavilion (JCP) All students, family members and guests are invited to attend this official kickoff to OLÉ! Weekend and be welcomed by USD’s president, James T. Harris III, DEd.

Relax and wind down with other USD parents, key USD administrators, facutly members, Parent Board Presidents Mark ‘83 and Suzanne Tunney, and President James T. Harris III, DEd. Enjoy delicious cheese boards paired with wine or beer. Nonalcoholic beverages will also be available. All parents and families are welcome. All persons attending must have a ticket.

Parking for Parent and Family Informational Sessions is available at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice parking structure, West Parking Structure and Olin Hall parking lot on the west side of campus.

If you are moving a transfer student in this morning, please refer to the Move-In Memo your student received by email for move-in times and more. Don’t forget to visit the Parent and Family Information Center. See page 2 for details.

USD Athletics Tailgate Fowler Park

Come join USD Athletics for an evening of fun, games, community and school spirit! Join us as we gear up for the USD women’s volleyball match against Baylor University. A tasty barbecue-style dinner will be served. This event and meal are included in the Weekend Package or in the USD Athletics tailgate event ticket. All family members and guests attending must have a ticket. New USD students do not need tickets to participate. Their lanyard and name tag will serve as their ticket. 7 – 9 p.m.

USD Women’s Volleyball vs. Baylor University Jenny Craig Pavilion (JCP) Come show off your school spirit as USD women’s volleyball takes on Baylor! It’s sure to be a packed house, so don’t miss out! Tickets will be distributed at the door. Note: Students will leave directly from this event for more OLÉ! Weekend evening events.

Campus Walking Tour Meet in front of the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science. Princeton Review says USD is one of America’s most beautiful campuses. Join us for a campus walking tour led by a student tour guide.

Career Development Center Presents: Parents as Partners Copley Library, Mother Rosalie Hill Reading Room It’s never too early to start thinking about your student’s future career. Parents play a critical role in their student’s college experience and decisions for the future. Join the Career Development Center team to learn about USD’s comprehensive career plan and how you can support your student’s career development throughout his/her time at USD.

Learn what your student will encounter in the first year, including Living Learning Communities (LLCs), the core curriculum, residential life, orientation, student support initiatives and more! Engage in a dialogue with a distinguished panel of USD administrators and student leaders working closely with your student during this time of transition.

Founders Chapel Tour Founders Chapel Guests will take a tour and learn the history of USD’s Founders Chapel with Sister Virginia Rodee ’57, ’74.

From Caretaker to Coach – Your New Supporting Role Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), Rooms H-I This session will provide you with insights into what your student will experience and how he/she might change over the next year. You will receive tips for transitioning from your student’s caretaker to coach, including strategies for communication and important discussion topics. First-time parents of college students might find this particularly helpful!

Health and Wellness Manchester Hall, Auditorium The university’s wellness team will provide you with information about adjusting to college in a healthy and safe manner. This session will address the important role parents play in helping their student make good choices and the resources available through USD’s Student Wellness area.

USD ranks No. 2 in the nation for the percentage of undergraduate students who study abroad and we pride ourselves on cultivating globally minded citizens. Students have the opportunity to study in more than 35 different countries. Learn about the process and opportunities available.

Navigating USD Academics Camino Hall, Shiley Theatre En Español: Mother Rosalie Hill Hall (MRH), Executive Classroom College of Arts and Sciences faculty members and administrators will discuss USD’s core curriculum, selecting classes, where to find academic support and ways in which your student can make the most of his/her USD education.

Out-of-State Parents – Supporting Your Student From a Distance Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), Rooms H-I Supporting your out-of-state college student is an exciting experience that also comes with a unique set of challenges. At this session you will hear from current out-of-state students and parents as you learn about the opportunities and support we have in place for students coming to campus from beyond California.

Parents of Collegiate Athletes Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), Rooms A-D Is your student participating in intercollegiate athletics at USD? Our athletic department will share important information from the student athlete handbook, discuss expectations and outline services and resources available to assist student athletes in maintaining NCAA athletics eligibility.

This session provides beneficial advice and information to families of first-generation students.

Safety and Living in San Diego Session Sets I and II: Mother Rosalie Hill Hall (MRH), Second-Floor Reading Room Sessions III and IV: Shiley Center for Science and Technology (SCST), Atrium Hear from USD’s Department of Public Safety on the important role parents play in helping their students make good choices regarding personal safety. Campus emergency procedures, off-campus safety, alcohol and other drug use will be discussed.

Student Involvement Shiley Center for Science and Technology (SCST), Atrium It’s not just about academics! USD offers a variety of ways for students to develop their leadership capacities through involvement. Learn about various opportunities, clubs and organizations at USD and how they can assist in your student’s adjustment, satisfaction and academic success.
