WELCOME PARENTS AND FAMILIES. The University of San Diego welcomes parents and families of first-year and transfer students! We are pleased your student decided to attend USD and are committed to supporting you. If you have any questions during the weekend, don’t hesitate to reach out to our wonderful Parent and Family Relations team, parent ambassadors and alumni volunteers stationed throughout campus.

Since there are different events held for the parents and families of first-year students and transfer students, be sure to navigate this program according to what best applies to you and your family. Events marked with a ticket icon will require proof of registration to attend. If you preregistered make sure to check in at the Family Check-In area that corresponds to your student’s residence hall or at Commuter Parent and Family Check-in.
Parent and Family Information Center Various locations and times

Mail Center Move-In Pickup
Mail Center at Maher Annex Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Students living on campus may visit the Mail Center Move-In Pickup location to pick up any packages sent to their university address prior to arrival. The Mail Center will be closed on Sunday and Labor Day.

Prepurchased Participation Package for First-Year Families Families of residential first-year students who prepurchased a participation package may pick up their materials on Friday, Sept. 1 at their designated check-in locations between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. This corresponds with your student’s residence hall check-in location. Families of commuter first-year students who prepurchased a participation package may pick up their materials at the First-Year Commuter Family Check-In and Welcome between 3 and 4 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 2, package materials and check-in will be at the Parent and Family Information Center at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Prepurchased Participation Package for New Transfer Families New transfer families who prepurchased a participation package may pick up their materials on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Parent and Family Information Center at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Rotunda between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES ONLY Today’s activities are for first-year students and their families only. If you are moving your new first-year student in this morning, please refer to the Move-In Memo your student received by email for move-in times and more. Don’t forget to visit the Parent and Family Information Center. See page 1 for details. 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
First-Year Resident Student Move-In Assigned residence hall Make sure to stop by the Family Check-In table that corresponds to your student’s residence hall to receive your welcome packet and any prepurchased package materials. Note: the Family Check-In is separate from the Student Check-In. For students who finish moving in early, see “Get Settled and Explore Campus” on page 1. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Lunch Options Lunch is available on campus. New students eat for free at Pavilion Dining in the Student Life Pavilion (SLP) with their lanyard and name tag. For families looking for additional options, please inquire at the information table in front of the Hahn University Center (UC) for on- and off-campus recommendations. 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Stay to hear from current commuter parents and students. This is a great opportunity to get advice and mingle.

This event is for first-year students and their families only. Celebrate your arrival at USD with fellow Torero families. Each family member and guest is required to have a ticket. Tickets to dinner are included in either the Friday Only Package or the Weekend Package. For package details and pricing see page 2. New USD students do not need tickets; their name tags will serve as their tickets. Gluten-free and vegetarian options will be available upon request.

Health and Wellness at USD
Parent and Family Informational Session Descriptions
The university’s wellness team will provide you with information about adjusting to college in a healthy and safe manner. This session will address the important role parents play in helping their student make good choices and the resources available through USD’s Student Wellness.
Campus Services Want to learn how to manage life on campus? Attend this session to hear about meals, books, laundry, banking, retail and other services and discounts offered at USD.
Financial Matters
International Study Abroad
Representatives from the One Stop Student Center, Student Accounts and Financial Aid will discuss financial responsibilities including the financial aid award and acceptance process, billing statements and tuition payment, how to access the USD web portal, granting parents online access to student information and details about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Plus, learn valuable tips that you can use to manage college expenses.
Why not study abroad while at USD? During the past six years, USD has ranked within the top ten schools in the nation for undergraduate student abroad participation, and prides itself on cultivating globally minded citizens. Students have the opportunity to study in more than 35 different countries. Learn about the process of studying abroad and opportunities available for your student.
First-Year Experience This session is a must for parents and supporters of new first-year students. Learn what your student will encounter in the first year including Living Learning Communities (LLCs), the Core Curriculum, Residential Life, Orientation, student support initiatives and more! Engage in a dialogue with a distinguished panel of USD administrators and student leaders working closely with your student during this time of transition.

Navigating USD Academics USD College of Arts and Sciences faculty members and administrators will discuss USD’s core curriculum, selecting classes, where to find academic support and ways in which your student can make the most of his/her USD education.
Parents and Students Tell All USD parents and current students share their experiences and the insight they’ve acquired during their journey at USD.
Tour of Founders Chapel Guests will take a tour and learn the history of USD’s Founders Chapel with Sister Virginia Rodee ’57, ’74.
USD Apps and Technology Parents as Partners Presented by the Career Development Center It’s never too early to start thinking about your student’s future career. Parents play a critical role in their student’s college experience and decisions for the future. Join the Career Development Center team to learn about USD’s comprehensive career plan and how you can support your student’s career development throughout his/her time at USD.
Learn about everything you can do on the portal and with specialized USD apps. Encourage your student to take advantage of these technological resources.
USD’s Catholic Identity Learn about USD’s Catholic identity, our commitments to our Catholic character and to diversity and inclusion.
Parents of Collegiate Athletes Is your student participating in intercollegiate athletics at USD? Our athletic department will share important information from the student athlete handbook, discuss expectations and outline services and resources available to assist student athletes in maintaining NCAA athletics eligibility.
Safety and Navigating San Diego Hear from USD’s Department of Public Safety on the important role parents play in helping their student make good choices regarding personal safety. Campus emergency procedures, off-campus safety, alcohol and other drug use will be discussed.
Student Leadership and Involvement It’s not just about academics! USD offers a variety of ways for students to develop their leadership capacities through involvement. Learn about various leadership opportunities, clubs and organizations at USD and how they can assist in your student’s adjustment, satisfaction and academic success.
Supporting Your Diverse Student’s Experience This is an opportunity for parents to learn about ways to aid their student’s college experience as racially diverse persons.

Mass of Welcome* Jenny Craig Pavilion (JCP) A very special Mass has been prepared to welcome all new students and their families into the USD community. All denominations are welcome and encouraged to attend. At the conclusion of the Mass, families will have the opportunity to take part in the USD tradition of blessing their students as they begin their college experience. *This is the final parent and family event. It’s time to say your goodbyes!
