WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY AT SURREY?
OWEN
Media and Communication BSc
“I visited campus with a friend who was considering attending the University to study physics. I found the students and staff to be impassioned and engaging, and the facilities on offer greatly impressed me. After a second visit for my own benefit to the Department of Sociology, I thought the staff and student body I met that day to be just as inspired and approachable as their colleagues in Physics, and that is when I decided to make Surrey my first choice.”

OLIVER
Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year BEng
“Doing a foundation year was an excellent experience – it helped to further my knowledge in all areas of my course and it aided my practical skills, such as time management. It also enhanced my ability to work within a team. I was able to enter the first year of my degree knowing my way around campus, knowing how to study in a university environment and achieving a good work-life balance.”
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS?
ELISAVETHA
Aerospace Engineering MEng
“Make the most of the social opportunities at Surrey by joining clubs and societies. I joined the Team Surrey Archery Club and MechSoc, which I’ve really enjoyed. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in other extracurricular activities, such as volunteering, being a course rep and doing a part-time job. Taking part is so important and it makes for an unforgettable experience.“

“I spent my placement at Williams Racing in the Heritage team, which looks after a vast collection of Williams Formula 1 cars.
I worked with many departments and got to know over 200 people. My transferable competencies, such as teamworking, improved the most, but I also gained design skills and learned about practical engineering.
One of my proudest moments was when we ran one of our heritage cars at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was an event we worked towards for months and seeing it all go well made me feel proud for our entire team.
The other was being recognised for my work contributions during my placement with a ‘Brand Ambassador’ award, which I was presented with during Williams Racing’s Early Careers Awards night.”
COPTER Food Science and Nutrition BSc
“During my studies, I had the opportunity to take on a summer placement at Leatherhead Food Research – a renowned organisation that delivers scientific and regulatory affairs advice to its customers.
I loved being able to showcase my potential in the food industry. Being able to wear a company’s lanyard made me feel proud and satisfied with the hard work I put into my CV and the application process.
Whilst on placement, I demonstrated my passion for the food industry and was offered a position after graduation! Being able to secure this opportunity before even starting my final year was a great feeling.”

ELLIOT
Business Management and Spanish BSc
“When I was 15 and studying for my GCSEs, I came to Surrey for an open day with my dad. I came for a second open day whilst studying my A-levels, and this confirmed that Surrey was the right place for me.
It’s so close to London, but I really loved the community feel of the campus (which you don’t really get with city universities) and everybody was very welcoming.
I love being part of two Schools at Surrey: on a standard working day, I can be in classes of 20 or 200 people – I can experience the closeness of the smaller School of Literature and Languages, and the huge variety within the Surrey Business School.”
TAKING THE LEAD
Rabies kills an estimated 60,000 people a year.
Rabies in humans is 100% preventable.
Our School of Veterinary Medicine researchers, led by Post-Doctoral Researcher Emma Taylor, are capturing data around transmission of rabies in dogs (the leading cause of rabies in humans) to develop a tool to aid decision makers in identifying disease interventions.
This research aims to help end human deaths from dog-mediated rabies everywhere by 2030. surrey.ac.uk/research-surrey

“On my course, I like that we have periods of theory before going on placement as this gives me time to consolidate my learning and feel confident before applying my knowledge on the road.
The facilities at Surrey are incredible, not only giving us access to an ambulance and all the kit we would have on the road, but the Clinical Simulation Centre also prepares us for how hospitals work and how that feels.
In the Immersive Learning Environment, we also act out different scenarios with actors which prepares us massively for placement.”

SUSTAINABILITY AT SURREY
Surrey was ranked 55th in the world by the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings, which assesses universities’ performance against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
NET ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS BY 2030
We are reducing our demand, increasing onsite renewable energy generation, increasing the amount of energy purchased from verified renewable sources and considering how transparent offsetting schemes can cover what we can’t eliminate. We’ve increased the number of electric vehicles in our fleet and plan to keep increasing this number.
EXPANDING OUR SOLAR POWER
Solar generation forms a big part of our net zero mission. Our new solar facility, developed in partnership with SSE Energy Solutions, will increase our on-site renewable energy to 28% of total annual demand. The project will include wildflower planting, nature corridors, hedgerow expansion and bug hotels.
HEDGEHOG-FRIENDLY
We are proud to have received the Silver Award for our hedgehog-friendly campus scheme from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
EXAMINING A NEW, FLEXIBLE WAY TO HARVEST SOLAR POWER
Surrey researchers are focusing on exciting new perovskite solar cell technologies, which could lead to solar cells that are lighter, more flexible and perform better than traditional ones, potentially helping the UK reach its 2050 carbon-neutral goal.
OUR RESEARCH INTO SOILLESS BIOMASS ENERGY
Surrey researchers, led by Dr Zoe Harris, are developing a cultivation method that can quickly grow crops without soil to create biomass energy. Producing heat, power and liquid transport fuels from biomass instead of fossil fuels could offer a wide range of environmental and socio-economic benefits.
BOREHOLE PROJECT PROVIDES 95% STAG HILL CAMPUS WATER DEMAND
We have equipped a borehole, drilled 132m into the underlying chalk aquifer at our Stag Hill campus, to extract clean drinking water. Providing up to 1,000,000 litres of water a day, the borehole increases the resilience of our supply, reduces costs and carbon emissions associated with pumping and provides teaching and research opportunities.
SURREY’S SUSTAINABILITY
OUR GREEN STUDENTS’ UNION
SUSTAINABLE SOCIETIES

Increase biodiversity on campus.
Students can get involved in a number of ways:
Attending the Sustainability Forum

Enactus is an international organisation that helps students to engage in social action and social enterprise. Their new project ‘Scorchers Go Green’ aims to educate young children on the importance of sustainability and the impact of climate change. They wish to plant 1,000 trees in the Surrey area by the end of the academic year.
Surrey Garden Society manages a community garden and collaborates with the Estates and Facilities team to help make the campus green. They plant trees and flowers, grow fruit and vegetables and even keep bees.
Surrey Business Society organised a ‘Sustainability in Business’ series of panels and discussions with guest speakers from a variety of businesses and sectors, including: Samsung, OLIO, MUD Jeans and UpCircle.
Surrey Surf Club created ‘Surrey Surf’s Sustainable Swaps’, an IGTV series highlighting the everyday swaps we can make to help the planet and move towards a plastic-free, zero-waste lifestyle. They’ve covered bottles, earbuds and face pads, dental care and hair products.
People & Planet Society launched the ‘Red Racoon Food Co-operative’ in collaboration with the Students’ Union, selling affordable plastic-free food on campus.
NATURE AND NURTURE
At Surrey we are investigating how people engage with digital representations of nature.
We want to see whether this might have a positive impact on our wellbeing. As part of this research, we commissioned an art installation, to explore visitors’ interactions with it and to invite their views.
Dr Tracy Xu, leading author of the research, said: “This project has deepened the understanding of the link between engaging with nature virtually via social media and wellbeing, and our findings suggest that these experiences improve wellbeing on a broader level.”

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
OUR FACULTY OF HEALTH AND MEDICAL SCIENCES CONTINUES TO TAKE A LEADING ROLE IN MEDICAL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH AS WE PREPARE TO EQUIP THE DOCTORS OF THE FUTURE.
Surrey’s new School of Medicine will contribute to our One Health, One Medicine multidisciplinary approach to health research and education.
The School will offer an independent Graduate Entry Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS)*, developed in collaboration with the University of Exeter Medical School.
As per government regulations, the majority of our intake will be international students. This is a Graduate Entry Programme, requiring a degree before you can apply. Visit surrey.ac.uk/medicalschool
*subject to GMC Accreditation.
OUR COURSES
There are lots of ways you can study for a degree with us. We offer multiple study options to make sure you get the knowledge, skills and experience you need.
THREE-YEAR DEGREE
Most degree courses in England take three years of study to complete. It’s possible to complete the majority of our courses in three years, which will let you start your career or move on to further study quickly.
FOUR-YEAR DEGREE WITH A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PLACEMENT
Many of our degree courses include a Professional Training placement, where you’ll usually spend one year working in an organisation to develop your skills, make connections and get a taste of what it’s like to work in your chosen industry. You may also have the option of pursuing a study exchange abroad during your placement year.
See pages 20–21 for more information about our Professional Training placements.
INTEGRATED MASTERS DEGREE
Many of our subject areas give you the option of studying for a degree course with an integrated masters year. This means that you’ll graduate with a masters-level degree. Each of these subjects approach this differently, depending on what you need and what you want to get from it, whether that’s accreditation, research skills or a deeper level of knowledge or understanding.
For more information on the integrated masters year, visit: surrey.ac.uk/study/integrated
DEGREE WITH A FOUNDATION YEAR
We offer some of our undergraduate courses with a foundation year of study. This additional year is designed to give you extra skills and knowledge to support your learning before you progress on to degree-level studies. If you’re unlikely to meet the entry requirements for your chosen undergraduate course but are still keen to learn at Surrey, opting for a course with an integrated foundation year can offer you an alternative entry route.
INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION YEAR
If you’re applying as an international student and would like additional support in your transition to the UK, the Surrey International Study Centre offers a range of foundation pathways. The International Foundation Year is a programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language training. These courses are two semesters long and, on completion, you’ll be eligible to apply for the majority of our undergraduate courses (subject to meeting the progression grades required).
Find out more, including start dates, entry requirements and how to apply, by visiting: isc.surrey.ac.uk
OUR COURSE TABLES
UCAS CODES
Courses with a foundation year and/or Professional Training option will have a different UCAS code for each option. Please refer to the course page on our website for all UCAS codes.
REQUIRED SUBJECTS
Please check the course pages on our website for full details of the subjects and grades you will need.
FOUNDATION YEAR OPTION
If you don’t meet our entry requirements for the undergraduate programme, you might still be able to apply for this course with an integrated foundation year. A course with an integrated foundation year includes an extra year of study to prepare you for a full degree course. Please check the course pages on our website for full details of entry requirements.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
Professional Training placements usually last for one year, however this does vary for our Midwifery, Nursing, Paramedic Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Veterinary Medicine and Science courses where the training is integrated into the course. Please check each course page on our website for further details.
