And the Award Goes To … At the 27th Annual Educational Advertising Awards, UT’s Student Viewbook took home a Gold Award and was named to the Best of Show list. UT’s “LUCKY” campaign (designed by The Clear Agency) won the Best of the Bay ADDY for Public Service for a second year at the Tampa Bay ADDY Awards competition. At the CASE District III Awards Program, the UT Journal received an Award of Excellence for Magazine Publishing Improvement, the UT home page received an Award of Excellence for World Wide Web Home Page Design and Implementation, and the UT website received a Special Merit Award for Overall Website Design and Implementation.

A New Place to Play

B

y next fall, UT will have a new athletic field to support intramurals and Spartan athletics. The University recently announced plans to build a student intramural and athletic field and stadium on the west side of campus, north of Kennedy Boulevard. President Vaughn said the addition of the lacrosse program and increased student interest in intramurals necessitates the development. He added that the University will eventually build academic buildings on the site of the existing intramural field on campus. “This project will give us more flexibility and green space into the future, and allow for academic expansion,” Vaughn said. The facility is expected to be completed by December 2012. The field will be home to the UT men’s lacrosse team, which is playing its inaugural season this spring, as well as a new women’s lacrosse team, which will begin play during the 2013-2014 academic year. The field will also be used for numerous intramurals and other sports. While construction, design and timeline details are in the final planning stages, proposed plans reveal that the facility will include a multi-purpose field, a 1,450-seat stadium, two spectator berms, restrooms, a concession area, parking, team meeting rooms and a support building. Artificial turf will be used on the field and a fence similar to the one along UT’s current campus bordering Kennedy Boulevard will be erected. A high net will keep athletic balls from disrupting traffic. The facility is being funded in part by Tampa’s Naimoli family and will be named the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex. The Naimoli family has been involved with UT since the 1980s, funding improvements to UT’s tennis and softball complexes as well as establishing the Naimoli Institute for Business Strategy. In the coming weeks, UT will clear several University-owned properties fronting Kennedy Boulevard to prepare for construction, including the transplant of a grand oak tree. The site is roughly bordered by Kennedy Boulevard to the south, North A Street to the north and Delaware Avenue to the east.

Spartan Cards may be obtained by going to the Spartan Card office in the Vaughn Center, Room 235A, MondayThursday, 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. In August UT community members will receive a lanyard and ID holder to make identification easier.

Tenure and Promotions

Katharine Cole will join UT as associate provost and dean of academic services in June. Cole comes to UT from the University of South Florida (USF) where she serves as associate dean of undergraduate studies. In this role at USF, she oversees academic policies, standards and student academic concerns for more than 48,000 students and nine academic colleges.

Tickets are based on availability and may only be purchased at the McDonald’s Ticket Office located on the west plaza of the Tampa Bay Times Forum 15 minutes prior to the start of the game. Please note tickets are limited to one per person. The last two home games are on March 31 and April 2.

Gurrie Named FCA Teacher of the Year Chris Gurrie, assistant professor of speech, was recently named the Florida Communication Association (FCA) Teacher of the Year for 2011. The award is given to one FCA member each year for outstanding performance as a classroom teacher.

RNC Continued “An Incident-Free RNC” Student Government President Nick Chmura filmed a video focusing on student safety. There’s some good tips for faculty and staff, too, especially if you’re a USF alum. See it at www.ut.edu/rnc, under “Current Students.” RNC to Hire-UT If you know of a student who is interested in applying for volunteer and internship opportunities during the RNC, send him or her to HIRE-UT. The student can login to their HIRE-UT account and see what’s available. John Hancock Would Do It Since there are only 152 days until RNC, a staff member suggested faculty/staff add the RNC website (www.ut.edu/rnc) as part of their email signature. This is a good way to keep the RNC on people’s minds. In Brief Save the date for the next Student Services Briefing on April 26. The session will be devoted to all things RNC. The meeting will take place in the Grand Salon and includes lunch. The Hostess with the Mostess Don’t forget to keep your eye on the Tampa Bay Host Committee website at http://2012tampa.com, in addition to UT’s own RNC site — www.ut.edu/rnc . Stock Up If your office receives regular shipments of water, coffee, office supplies, etc., consider stocking up on these items before the convention and canceling deliveries during RNC week.


Construction Updates

T

he trailers in the Art and Polly Pepin Stadium parking lot are temporary offices and locker rooms for athletics while the Martinez Athletics Center is under renovation. Athletics also has temporary offices in the 813 Building. Now that the indoor sports seasons are over, the gyms are essentially closed. Limited access for scheduled events will be through the north doors (closest to the West Garage).The Health Science and Human Performance spaces and Bailey Studios and Galleries remain open. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic on North A Street and North B Street west of North Boulevard and on North Edison Avenue will be limited or closed from time to time through the end of April for construction projects in the area. Access to the Thomas Parking Garage will be moved to the A Street entrance over the period of March 25-28 in order for an air conditioning

GINA ALMERICO, professor of education and director of program accreditation, was appointed to the Florida Association of Colleges for Teacher Education’s executive board for the next two years as corresponding secretary. In addition, her paper, “Secondary content area reading: challenging sell for professors in teacher education programs,” was published in the Research in Higher Education Journal. RYAN CRAGUN, associate professor of sociology, had his article “The Secular Outlook: In Defense of Moral and Political Secularism” published in the Journal of Contemporary Religion. Cragun also reviewed the book Faith No More: Why People Reject Religion by Phil Zuckerman for Free Inquiry. DEIRDRE DIXON, an adjunct professor, was honored by the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida at the 11th annual Women of Distinction Luncheon on March 13. Dixon was recognized for her professional achievements that inspire girls to attain their own goals and dreams. BETH ESCHENFELDER, assistant professor of communication, had her article “Exploring the Nature of Nonprofit Work Through Emotional Labor” published in Management Communication Quarterly. She also published “The role of narrative in public relations ethics pedagogy” in Public Relations Review. KEVIN FRIDY, assistant professor of government and world affairs, coauthored “Sierra Leone’s 2007 Elections: Monumental and More of the Same,” which was published in African Studies Quarterly. TIM HARDING, associate dean of career development and engagement, was elected president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers, an organization of human resource, college

KRYSTAL SCHOFIELD, associate dean of residence life, was selected to present a session, “Navigating Your Way Through Internal Change,” at the National Association of College and University Housing Officers International conference in Anaheim, CA, July 7-10. JOHN STINESPRING, associate professor of economics, provided a statistical assessment of the Destination ImagiNation program on behalf of Clearview PR. His statistical analysis was quoted in the national press. ALBERT TILLSON, professor of history, had his article “Liberty’s Exiles: American Loyalists in the Revolutionary World” published in the Journal of American History. NATASHA VELTRI, assistant professor of information and technology management, was second runner-up for the Best Paper award at the International Conference on Information Systems for her work on the paper “It’s All About Networking! Data Exposure No Risk to Faculty and Staff

A

ter thoroughly analyzing database files and associated activity logs, UT’s investigation has determined there is no risk to faculty and staff, other than those enrolled as students in Fall 2011, from the recent data security incident. This finding was confirmed by an independent qualified security assessor (QSA)/information security governance and risk auditor. UT engaged this auditor shortly after the server management error was discovered. Information Technology logs show that the database files were not indexed by Google or any other search engine. IT has thoroughly examined database files and associated logs and has determined and verified that the logs show that the database files were accessed by only one UT student on March 13, 2012. That student, along with one other student who viewed the files promptly reported the discovery to IT staff. Those students allowed IT staff to search their computers and a USB storage device to ensure the database files were eliminated. However, as you know, the personal data of 6,818 students who were enrolled by July 12, 2011 for Fall 2011 was indexed by Google and made publicly accessible before being immediately secured. The students impacted are being offered prepaid identity protection services through Experian.

“I am deeply troubled and personally concerned that a breach of this type occurred. I have ordered a thorough investigation, and I am taking aggressive action to make sure it does not happen again,” said President Vaughn. “In addition to our own team, our future efforts will also include the services of an independent auditor who are experts in computer security.” To help UT community members easily and quickly determine whether or not their personal information is at risk, the UT Office of Information Technology has created a SpartanWeb portal. Once you logon to SpartanWeb, the portal will return whether or not your information was included in the text file that was publicly accessible. To access the portal, go to https://spartanweb.ut.edu/ICS/Campus_Life/ Information_Technology/Breach_Verification/ . “I pledge to you that when we emerge from this situation our data security practices will be fortified with the latest technologies and best practices available,” Vaughn said. A LONG WAY FROM HOME — Four Sykes College of Business faculty members, including Dean Frank Ghannadian, traveled with eight Tampa-area executives and their spouses to China in March as part of the first COB Global Access Partnership. The goal of the program is to give Tampa community members firsthand experience with global markets and cultures in order to help them understand how to expand and run a business internationally.
