COMMUNICATION DESIGN ESSENTIALS CERTIFICATE Our Communication Design Essentials program provides you with a basic understanding of the latest design software skills such as image manipulation, text layout and grid systems. Learn to use these tools to effectively communicate ideas. This course emphasizes the core fundamentals of 2-D design as the building blocks of visual literacy. Through lectures and hands-on assignments, you will gain a working knowledge of concepts and the vocabulary needed to facilitate your understanding of visual organization. WEB DESIGN ESSENTIALS CERTIFICATE Our Web Design programs are designed to provide the essentials needed to enter into this competitive industry, so you are prepared with an understanding of both best practices and good design, as well as the technical skills needed to enter the field. You can continue into the Web Design Professional Certificate to build more targeted skills in web work after completing the Web Design Essentials Certificate program. This course offers a detailed overview of the tools and languages used and the first half of the process in a modern, front-end designer workflow. Discussions, readings, explanations and a hands-on approach to the subject matter allow you to explore the web as a creative outlet for both designers and developers. Learn the roles of various participants in the web design process and explore the importance of social media, graphic design, web-based content management systems, multiplatform design and scalable development best practices. The best practices topics covered in the course revolve around, but aren’t limited to, requirements gathering, wireframing, mood boards and coding standards. This course explores HTML5, CSS3, WordPress and semantic markup and culminates with the design of a simple website to be used as a reference for future work. It is a thorough review of the procedures and technologies that are paramount in a modern and successful web project.

COMMUNICATION + WEB DESIGN CERTIFICATE You can earn a combined professional-level certificate by completing all the requirements of the Communication Design Essentials Certificate (see page 2) plus the requirements for the Web Design Essentials Certificate (see page 3) before enrolling in the final Capstone course. This program builds both print and web skills together that explore a wide range of visual communications. Your portfolio will demonstrate the use of print and web skills in a complementary way. In the Capstone course you will gain experience producing graphics and a website for a real-world client. Certificate Requirements:

WEB DESIGN PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE Our professional-level program is designed for the individual interested in building more complex websites, assessing website functionality, managing projects with clients and staying up-to-date on emerging tools. You can choose courses that best address your professional goals, interests and needs to advance your technical skills and knowledge in areas such as: programming, development, user experience, CMS and client/project management. This certificate culminates in a required Capstone project where you develop a complete website for a real-world client, incorporating the higher-level skills gained in the program. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CERTIFICATE Our Digital Photography program provides targeted skills needed in the field – camera techniques, digital editing, technical lighting and image output. Enhancing your technical knowledge, you will build an individual aesthetic – studying works by other photographers, creating thematic work and having guest critiques. You’ll learn about the industry opportunities and take your images into new creative areas, culminating in a Capstone project gallery exhibition of your final work. Explore the fundamental principles, techniques and application of digital camera-based image making. Learn to capture images by selecting your exposure settings for aperture and shutter while simultaneously learning about manual metering, color balance and strong composition. This course employs a mixture of lectures, demonstrations, assignments, field trips and critiques. You must have your own digital camera with adjustable exposure and focus and the ability to capture in raw.

Social media represents one of the most significant changes in consumer media behavior, resulting in shifts in the way marketers communicate and interact with audiences. In part one of this course, interactive social media tools are examined, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, mobile apps and blogging.

TEACHING ARTIST CERTIFICATE The Teaching Artist Certificate is for artists currently working, promoting and demonstrating their craft who are interested in sharing their talents with students in a K-12 classroom or community center environment. At the end of your coursework, participate in a 10-week discipline-specific residency in your local community. Simultaneously, participate in a group of online sessions with the other members of your cohort to document your experience and to provide feedback and support to one another. This certificate is a completely online program that begins with a cohort each fall. It is a unique program with specific application fees and requirements, including its own application form. Explore the history and philosophy of learning theories and their application to present-day classroom practices. Theoretical models from pre-20th century through current brain-based research are examined in relation to the teaching of the arts. Learning styles and teaching strategies are analyzed as a means to address effective classroom practices.
CE TA01C - 2 Credits $350, Fee $20 Take the First Step: Human Behavior + Child Development Gain a basic understanding of child development theories and current issues in human behavior as related to patterns of change in the most critical age group of learners, ages 4-14. Cognitive, language, social/emotional and motor domains are examined. Explore the ways teaching artists can create ageappropriate arts activities within instructional settings, including preK-12 classrooms and community sites.
