Letterpress Printmaking The traditional art of printing from engraved plates and metal type is explored using the University’s collection of metal and wood typefaces. Metal Sculpture – Forging + Welding For beginners or advanced students, this course focuses on creating metal sculpture through fabrication. NEW! Pinhole Camera Photography Workshop A pinhole camera typically is a box built out of wood, cardboard or tin and uses a simple pinhole in a piece of foil for an aperture. Traditionally, pinhole cameras have used film or light-sensitive paper to capture the image. In this workshop, explore unique imagery and printing with a pinhole camera as well as explore new methods of creating digital pinhole images. These still require a digital camera body, so they’re not as low-tech as their film/paper cousins, but they do dispense with the lenses to create images that intrigue. Screen Printing This course approaches screen printing as a mode of expression and concentrates on techniques and experimentation in a fine art context. Adobe InDesign Workshop

Designed for individuals with some exposure to the Adobe suite of design software, this course provides an overview of the fundamentals of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Topics include image resolution, scanning, importing and exporting images, print setup, photo adjustments and vector usage. Basic typography and design will also be addressed. You can expect to gain a better understanding of how the three programs work together to create products for print or the web.

Adobe’s page layout program lets you put together every kind of print-oriented product imaginable – brochures, ads, posters, billboards and more – using text, images and illustrations. InDesign allows the creation of multipage documents, and it works seamlessly with images from Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. Learn how to integrate and use these tools more effectively.

Designing Effective Web Pages This course builds and expands on the principles and practices introduced in Foundations of Web Design + Development. You will cover the second half of the front-end designer workflow and apply learned and new principles of web design, specifically: project analysis; creation of high-fidelity, accessible and thoughtful user interfaces; and how to translate your interfaces into valid, semantically correct and wellformed HTML5 and CSS3 documents. This course focuses on the craft and commercial value of both fiction and nonfiction. Through a workshop format, explore plot structure, character development, effective dialogue, voice and point of view. You will benefit from energetic class discussions, written critiques and conferences with the instructor.

In this course, the class chooses one network/ cable television series for which they will collectively work as a series “writing staff.” Develop a half-hour comedy or one-hour drama episode outline together, and then write your own teleplays based on that outline. Studio Photography

This course provides the technical background necessary for versatile shooting in low-light environments. For both beginner and advanced photographers, the objective is to develop your understanding of how to properly determine exposures and create visually compelling photographs under various degrees of available light. Working in exterior and interior locations with both natural and artificial light sources, you will create a body of nocturnal images. CENTER CITY PARKING DISCOUNT Continuing Education students have the opportunity to prepay for a group of 10 parking vouchers for a discount rate of $80 ($8 per parking ticket). Certificate students are afforded access to steeply discounted evening parking and pay $70 for a group of 10 parking vouchers ($7 per parking ticket). The vouchers are accepted only at LAZ Parking, located at 1327 Locust Street.

SUPPLIES Supplies are the responsibility of the student. Supply lists will be available online one week prior to the start of classes and can be accessed by selecting the Syllabus link on the individual course page. Some courses issue eAccount cards in class for the in-studio purchase of metals, clays and other highly specialized materials.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION The University of the Arts is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Continuing Education offers courses for Continuing Education credit. Courses in this program are indicated with a “CE” prefix. Courses for credit have a “C” suffix and courses for non-credit have an “N” suffix.

GRADING + TRANSCRIPTS All courses taken for non-credit are graded either pass or fail. All courses taken for credit receive a letter grade. Students enrolled in a certificate program must take coursework for credit. Continuing Education students may obtain their final course grades online through WebAdvisor at MyUArts Record. To obtain an official copy of your transcript, submit your request to the University Registrar at registrar.uarts.edu/services/transcript-request.

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Continuing Education at the University of the Arts offers a wide range of programs authorized to fulfill PA Act 48 activity hours. Each class hour is equivalent to one Act 48 hour. Call 215.717.6095 for more information.
