Drawing from Observation – Fossils, Taxidermy + Botanicals In this course, you will draw from observation using a collection of animal bones, skulls, tortoise shells, stuffed birds, animal hides, starfish and more. In addition, plant specimens such as gourds, pinecones and other artifacts from nature will be used. Focus on a range of drawing techniques and concepts as applied to this subject area, considering cross contour, rendering techniques, texture, abstraction and reduction/ simplification. Painting in the Abstract
Printing from engraved plates and metal type is explored using the University’s collection of metal and wood typefaces. Create printed works via typesetting and the Vandercook Proof Press. Create dynamic layers of color as you build images by combining a variety of techniques. Use monoprinting and stencil techniques to layer and color with brayers. Also use cut-n-ink moveable shapes to create colorful, complex prints. Incorporate drypoint lines on aluminum and mylar and add chine-collé papers for color and weight.
Print onto unusual surfaces using InkAID. This studio introduces the basics of digital printing and specifically works with InkAID coated onto a variety of paper surfaces. These coatings provide the ability to ink-jet print on virtually any type of substrate with clean, clear, crisp imaging with brilliant colors and high definition. Participants should bring some digital files (images and photographs) and/or a digital camera. There will be some work on the Mac computer.

Screen Printing
This course explores painting materials, techniques and concepts with a focus on capturing realistic works from direct observation. Learn the basics of color mixing, application techniques and composition. You may choose to work in acrylic or oil as you paint still life setups and live figure models, both clothed and nude.
This course covers a range of techniques, from image-generation processes and screen preparation, to the use of screen printing as a creative medium. The course consists of studio production, lectures, demonstrations and critiques. You are encouraged to bring images to the first class session. Designed for individuals with some exposure to the Adobe suite of design software, this course provides an overview of the fundamentals of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Topics include image resolution, scanning, importing and exporting images, print setup, photo adjustments and vector usage. Basic typography and design will also be addressed. You can expect to gain a better understanding of how the three programs work together to create products for print or the web.
Adobe’s page layout program lets you put together every kind of print-oriented product imaginable – brochures, ads, posters, billboards and more – using text, images and illustrations. Designing Effective Web Pages This course builds and expands on the principles and practices introduced in Foundations of Web Design + Development. You will cover the second half of the front-end designer workflow and apply learned and new principles of web design, specifically: project analysis; creation of high-fidelity, accessible and thoughtful user interfaces; and how to translate your interfaces into valid, semantically correct and wellformed HTML5 and CSS3 documents. Project Management for Web Design + Development Workshop
This course offers a detailed overview of the tools and languages used and the first half of the process in a modern front-end designer workflow. Discussions, readings, explanations and a hands-on approach to the subject matter allow you to explore the web as a creative outlet for both designers and developers. Learn the roles of various participants in the web design process and explore the importance of social media, graphic design, web-based content management systems, multiplatform design and scalable development best practices. Topics covered in the course revolve around, but aren’t limited to, requirements gathering, wire framing, mood boards and coding standards. This course explores HTML5, CSS3, WordPress and semantic markup, and culminates with the design of a simple website to be used as a reference for future work. Through a series of applied design projects, this course stresses the importance of typography and design within visual communication. Study basic type history, typographic contrast, characteristics of major type families and how to design words, sentences and paragraphs to visually communicate an idea. Develop your ability to create typographic layouts using the dynamics of a grid system as a design tool and to build an effective hierarchy. This course teaches different styles of jazz dance from popular Broadway musicals. Class begins with a warm-up, body isolations and stretches and proceeds to across-the-floor work. Salsa is a popular social dance throughout the Caribbean. Pinhole Camera Photography Workshop A pinhole camera typically is a box built out of wood, cardboard or tin and uses a simple pinhole in a piece of foil for an aperture. Traditionally, pinhole cameras have used film or light-sensitive paper to capture the image. In this workshop, explore unique imagery and printing with a pinhole camera as well as explore new methods of creating digital pinhole images. These still require a digital camera body, so they’re not as low-tech as their film/paper cousins, but they do dispense with the lenses to create images that intrigue. TUITION + FEES Tuition in Continuing Education at the University of the Arts is listed underneath each course in this brochure. Materials fees vary by class and are applied to the specific operational costs incurred by activities in certain classes, studios or labs. Payment of fees mentioned in course descriptions is required at the time of registration and is nonrefundable.
Note: It is not our policy to transfer registration from one course to another or one semester to another. Requests of this nature will be processed as a withdrawal, subject to the refund policy above.
COURSE CANCELLATION The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund.
TUITION DISCOUNTS
ATTENDANCE
We are proud to provide members of the following groups with tuition discounts. We require proof of membership in all cases – such as a copy of current ID card or similar documentation; see our website for details: cs.uarts.edu/ce/policies#tuitiondiscounts.
All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness or absence. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal.
Discounts must be requested and applied at the time of registration; no refunds will be issued retroactively in the case of overpayment. Only one discount can be used at a time. All discounts are applied to the cost of tuition; registration and course fees are the responsibility of the student. Note: Discounts are not available via online registration. 25% - Alumni – Graduates of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia College of Art and Design, Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and recipients of Continuing Education Certificates (excluding the Essentials certificates) 15% - American Institute of Architects (AIA) members 15% - The Professional Association for Design (AIGA Philadelphia) members 25% - Haviland Society members 15% - InLiquid members 15% - Museum Council of Philadelphia 10% - Philadelphia Orchestra subscribers 10% - Seniors over 55 years of age are eligible for a discount on tuition for any CE course meeting for 30 contact hours.
CENTER CITY PARKING DISCOUNT Continuing Education students have the opportunity to prepay for a group of 10 parking vouchers for a discount rate of $80 ($8 per parking ticket). Certificate students are afforded access to steeply discounted evening parking and pay $70 for a group of 10 parking vouchers ($7 per parking ticket). The vouchers are accepted only at LAZ Parking, located at 1327 Locust Street.
SUPPLIES Supplies are the responsibility of the student. Supply lists will be available online one week prior to the start of classes and can be accessed by selecting the Syllabus link on the individual course page. Some courses issue eAccount cards in class for the in-studio purchase of metals, clays and other highly specialized materials.
ACADEMIC INFORMATION The University of the Arts is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Continuing Education offers courses for Continuing Education credit. Courses in this program are indicated with a “CE” prefix. Courses for credit have a “C” suffix and courses for non-credit have an “N” suffix.
GRADING + TRANSCRIPTS All courses taken for non-credit are graded either pass or fail. All courses taken for credit receive a letter grade. Students enrolled in a certificate program must take coursework for credit. Continuing Education students may obtain their final course grades online through WebAdvisor at MyUArts Record. To obtain an official copy of your transcript, submit your request to the University Registrar at registrar.uarts.edu/services/transcript-request.
TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Continuing Education at the University of the Arts offers a wide range of programs authorized to fulfill PA Act 48 activity hours. Each class hour is equivalent to one Act 48 hour. Call 215.717.6095 for more information. Note: Act 48 activity hours are different from the graduate credits + Act 48 hours available in the Division of Continuing Studies’ Professional Institute for Educators.
