BUILDING TERRARIUM WORKSHOP

DRAWING + PAINTING

In this one-day workshop, learn how to select the proper plants to thrive in terrarium glass containers and the supplies needed to ensure their success. Consider plant and object selection to design unique and decorative ecosystems. All materials provided.

Develop both technical and conceptual drawing and painting skills in a studio environment. You will have the opportunity to work both in drawing and painting, or focus in just one area based on personal interest. Class instruction features a variety of observational studies and figurative assignments. Other exercises will examine more expressive approaches to drawing and painting as well as the use of color. This course is suitable for beginners and more experienced students alike, as critiques focus on individual development, refinement of skills, composition and representation of forms.

CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATION This class is designed for illustrators looking to tailor their portfolio to target children’s book agents and publishers. DRAWING CHALLENGE

This workshop is a drawing marathon to produce many pieces in short bursts. Designed for those with previous drawing experience to get their drawing skills reenergized through brief creative sessions.

From bathtub dyeing to kitchen table felting, this beginner’s workshop focuses on techniques that can easily be done in your home. Explore various dye techniques including shibori and ice dyeing. You will transform fabrics into a funky scarf using a wet/nuno felting technique.

FIGURE DRAWING + ANATOMY This course enables you to explore the human form as an art practice in relation to the study of human anatomy. Consider the structure, form and movement of the human body. You will have access to models, as well as skeletons, casts and diagrams used to teach anatomy. This course emphasizes a process-based approach focusing on the analysis of form, construction and perspective.

FUNDAMENTALS OF DESIGN

NEW! GRAPHIC NOVEL + CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Receive a strong, broad-based foundation in the visual arts through instruction in drawing and design in a studio setting. This course emphasizes the core fundamentals of 2-D design as the building blocks of visual literacy. Through lectures and hands-on assignments, gain a working knowledge of concepts and the vocabulary needed to facilitate your understanding of visual organization. Projects in a variety of media develop technical skills, sensitivity and perception in order to communicate effective artistic intent and vision. Through structured critiques, have the opportunity to evaluate and analyze your work while connecting it to art and design.

Interested in exploring your writing and illustration skills to adapt them to the exciting graphic novel medium? In this course, explore your interest in the literature and artwork of graphic novels, with a focus on developing well-formed characters. Learn the elements involved in making your own graphic novel and comic illustrations - from conceptual stage to completion. JEWELRY DESIGN + METALSMITHING

JEWELRY WORKSHOP - RING DESIGN

In this course, acquire working knowledge of jewelry artistry and fabrication skills. Techniques commonly used in jewelry and metalsmithing: sawing, piercing, soldering, basic stone setting, forming and finishing are explored through the creation of individual projects. Design and fabricate pieces in the studio and examine contemporary trends in jewelry and metalsmithing. You should anticipate additional costs for materials based on the scope of individual projects.

In this one-day workshop, learn the basic jewely fabrication techniques to create a unique sterling silver ring. Learn how to saw, file, pierce and texture your ring with hammers. Choose high polished, an oxidized look or a brushed finish in metal. This workshop is a great introduction to the jewelry metals studio — everything you need is provided. LETTERPRESS PRINTMAKING The traditional art of printing from engraved plates and metal type is explored using the University’s collection of metal and wood typefaces. Create several printed works via typesetting and the Vandercook Proof Press, allowing for prints up to 22 inches by 24 inches. Design custom polymer plates and perform multicolor printing. METAL SCULPTURE – FORGING + WELDING For a beginner or advanced student, this course focuses on creating metal sculpture through fabrication. Techniques include oxyacetylene cutting and welding, arc and TIG welding, as well as plasma cutting and forging. Curious to try your hand at pulling a print? Are you eager to get back into the studio and explore new ideas? This course provides an introduction to image generation, screen preparation, and the unique nature of this process, from start to finish, allowing more advanced students to develop individually. Students at all levels are welcome as we guide you into the process and let you explore varying levels of complexity. You are encouraged to bring photographic, computer-generated, hand-drawn images or stencils to get started. If you’ve never felt the satisfaction of screen printing, you are missing out!

Creatively repurpose, design and fabricate animal specimens in this introduction to one of the world’s oldest and most alluring crafts. Learn the essentials of basic taxidermy to gain visual and hands-on knowledge of animal anatomy and an understanding of natural fibers, ultimately completing an accessory or wearable embellishment of your choice. Specimens for class are sourced humanely and are safe to handle. Additional costs may be incurred for materials depending on the scope of the individual project selected. ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE OVERVIEW Designed for individuals with some exposure to the Adobe suite of design software, this course provides an overview of the fundamentals of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Topics include image resolution, scanning, importing and exporting images, print setup, photo adjustments and vector usage. Basic typography and design will also be addressed. You can expect to gain a better understanding of how the three programs work together to create products for print or the web. ADOBE INDESIGN

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

Adobe’s page layout program lets you put together every kind of print-oriented product imaginable: brochures, ads, posters, billboards and more using text, images and illustrations. InDesign allows the creation of multipage documents, and it works seamlessly with images from Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. Learn how to integrate and use these tools more effectively. Print output is the student’s responsibility.

When it comes to designing web layouts, Adobe Illustrator allows you to move and resize elements quickly and intuitively. Illustrator is the industry standard for creating vector-based graphics such as logos and typography. It is also a rich supporting tool in creating page layouts prior to starting design. This workshop focuses on a practical overview of Adobe Illustrator’s interface, workspace, tools and techniques. It will provide the skills to create website layouts, graphics, icons and typographical graphics that add distinction and professionalism to any website or user interface.

CAPSTONE PROJECT – WEB DESIGN PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE

Focus on expanding your design skills and refining your problem-solving abilities through advanced application of the design process. Work on a project producing graphics and a website for a real-world client of your selection. Manage print design pieces from concept to completion, creating a logo, brochure and package design. Develop and build a website that complements and enhances your print media. You are expected to possess the necessary skills and knowledge required to successfully complete the Capstone Project, and you must arrive at the first class session having identified a client for your project. This course concludes with a formal presentation to a panel of instructors and students. Prerequisite: This class is for Communication Design + Web Certificate enrollees only; successful completion of all prerequisite classes is mandatory.

This course is designed to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge you have learned in the Web Design Certificate program. SERVER-SIDE WEB DEVELOPMENT PHP + AJAX

This course builds and expands on the principles and practices introduced in Foundations of Web Design + Development. You will cover the second half of the front-end designer workflow and apply learned and new principles of web design, specifically: project analysis; creation of high-fidelity, accessible and thoughtful user interfaces; and how to translate your interfaces into valid, semantically correct and well-formed HTML5 and CSS3 documents. Design topics include: requirements analysis, asset management, usability, goal-oriented design, accessibility, typography for web, color theory, coding standards, frameworks and scalability. During the sequenced design phases, you will use Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator exclusively to design and refine a series of web project mockups. Prerequisite: Foundations of Web Design + Development, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or equivalent experience.

This course takes you beyond the client side and technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript and introduces server-side concepts and technologies. Learn to use the Apache web server, the MySQL relational database and the PHP scripting language to create a simple database-driven web application. Programming concepts will be explored using PHP. You will design and create your own database, as well as learn basic Structured Query Language (SQL). Prerequisite: Introduction to Programming or equivalent experience. FOUNDATIONS OF WEB DESIGN + DEVELOPMENT This course offers an overview of the tools and languages available to creative designers who seek to use the web as their medium of choice. Discussions, readings, explanations and a handson approach allow you to explore the web as a creative outlet for both designers and developers. Learn the roles of various web scripting languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. In addition, explore the importance of social media, webbased content management systems, multiplatform design and current development best practices. This course culminates with the design of a simple website to be used as a reference for future work. Build upon this foundation to turn your website designs into fully functional web pages. TYPOGRAPHY Through a series of applied design projects, this course stresses the importance of typography and design in visual communication. Study basic letterform anatomy, type history, typographic contrast, characteristics of major type families and how to design words, sentences and paragraphs to visually communicate an idea. Develop your ability to create typographic layouts using the dynamics of a grid system as a design tool and to build an effective hierarchy. WEB III - ADVANCED: RESPONSIVE DESIGN

WORDPRESS DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

Web III continues the use of forward-looking technologies such as HTML5 + CSS3 while adding to your knowledge of advanced JavaScript, client-side development and cross-browser testing and compatibility. Using media queries and multiple layouts, you will create a complex website that works on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops across platforms and browsers. Coursework combines design and development into a single cohesive workflow as you build a multipage website for a client, beginning with wireframes and technical specifications. You will create designs and mock-ups and go through a formal client review and revision process. Course topics rely heavily on lectures and critique as you work through your site. The result will be a complete marketing site for a client. Prerequisite: Web II or equivalent experience.

Learn how to use the WordPress Content Management System as the backbone and platform of all development projects. This is an advanced, intensive and comprehensive class geared to give developers the tools to develop solid websites using the open-source technology of WordPress. This course will help you understand WordPress so you can make it work for you and your clients without having to do all the heavy lifting of development yourself. This course is designed to provide you the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge you have learned in the Digital Photography Certificate program. Explore and analyze topics within the discipline of photography to meet your individually defined goals in coordination with and approved by the instructor. This course provides an overview of Adobe Lightroom, a complete end-to-end software solution for both amateur and professional photographers. Providing a critical set of tools for digital imaging tasks, Lightroom helps photographers work faster and more efficiently with one image, a set of images or a large image library. Lightroom allows you to organize images and quickly make adjustments. In this course, learn how to productively work with Lightroom, import images and sort them for organization and efficiency. Also spend time with advanced developing techniques to adjust exposure, contrast and color of images. You’ll learn to edit photos and discover advanced features to enhance workflow.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY I

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Explore the fundamental principles, techniques and application of digital camera-based image making. Learn to capture images by selecting your exposure settings for aperture and shutter while simultaneously learning about manual metering, color balance and strong composition. This course employs a mixture of lecture, demonstrations, assignments, field trips and critiques. You must have your own digital camera with adjustable exposure and focus and the ability to capture in RAW. Students are responsible for print output.

Street photography is a type of candid, documentary photography practiced by such luminaries as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Helen Levitt and others. These photographers documented the drama, turbulence, exoticism and humanity of the great American metropolis as they pushed the constraints of composition, rarely relying on pre-visualization. A skilled street photographer is able to anticipate action, interaction and that attosecond when the ordinary street scene becomes an extraordinary photograph. Students study the work of the noted photographers above, examine contemporary street photography and immerse themselves in the whirl of street life in Philadelphia as they understand what it takes to capture successful street photographs. Prerequisite: Digital Photography II or equivalent experience.

ACTING LAB

In this unique tap class, you’ll not only expand your tap technique but also get the opportunity to perform what you learn. Begin choreography lessons on the first night of class and perform toward the end of the semester (exact date TBA). The choreography in this class encompasses all levels of experience. This course provides a basic foundation into the craft of acting to all participants, regardless of experience. Through investigating techniques in script analysis, movement, voice, ensemble, and collective collaboration, students gain skills widely useful in social, business or public speaking situations. Participants are assigned scene-work and/or monologues as a means of personal exploration, and they work closely with the instructor to discover their strengths and challenges as an actor.

VOCAL LAB This course is a wonderful way to participate in the study of voice in a group setting which will build confidence and technique. Class will deal with basic vocal techniques for beginners, including positive breathing habits, posture, good diction, phrasing, interpretation of song literature, resonation, tone, production and diction. Both group and individual singing of simple vocalises and songs are part of each week’s class work. Various singing techniques are covered, including singing with a microphone. SCREENWRITING - DEVELOPING THE SCRIPT

This course is taught in a workshop format to allow both fiction and non-fiction writers to share, critique and improve their craft through lively discussions, conferences, written critiques, personal feedback and more, led by a professional writer. Participants examine plot structure, character developement, effective dialogue, voice and point of view. The goal is to guide students to refine a piece of work in preparation to publish, while honoring the ongoing creative process of writing, editing and critiquing. This course is intended for writers with some work in various stages of development that they are eager to improve and expand.

No matter what stage you’re in, this course uses the workshop approach to help you ignite a new screenplay, make significant headway on one already in progress or finish a first-draft script. The overall goal is to make sure you have a strong movie premise, a clear genre, a treatment that tells the story well, an outline built on an exciting scene-by-scene sequence structure and a script that can be produced. Sessions include structural breakdowns of feature films, discussion of assigned readings, application of screenwriting techniques and pertinent exercises. You should be prepared to pitch your screenplay on the first night of class. The course may be repeated until a first-draft screenplay is completed.

Registration fees are nonrefundable. All withdrawals must be submitted in writing sent via email to CS@UARTS.EDU. The date the request is received in writing is the date used to calculate the refund amount. Please allow up to 10 business days to receive a response to course withdrawal requests from the Division of Continuing Studies. Please allow at least three weeks for refunds to be processed.
