PRE-COLLEGE
THE PROGRAM CORE CLASSES
Creative writing students will focus on four writing genres—one per week. CREATIVE NONFICTION As many acclaimed
writers have demonstrated, nonfiction doesn’t have to mean a history lesson. Learn to apply flourish and expression that add credibility to actual events—starting with the events of your own life—which will morph from memories to short written works when you apply devices acquired in this class. FICTION Conjuring up a plot is one thing;
THE UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS
executing it effectively is another. Merge your great ideas with exacting delivery by developing the elements and subtleties that transform a compelling anecdote, thought or observation into enduring prose. POETRY Learn to distinguish effective poems
from the poorly executed or clichéd using proven approaches. Examine and dissect contemporary work while developing critical vocabulary for understanding poems better— and expressing yourself in powerful new ways.
SCRIPTWRITING Imagine your writing
leaping off the page and onto the big screen— or stage. Writing successfully for film, television, and stage requires a strong understanding of screenplay and theatrical conventions. This course introduces you to the basic sequences and structures that shape these thriving genres. Walk away with the tools and knowledge needed to write feature-length stage and screen projects. ELECTIVES
Students in the Creative Writing program will have the opportunity to participate in an elective of their choosing on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with students in the Art, Media + Design program. PRE-COLLEGE
THE SCENE A student’s experience in the Pre-College Summer Institute is more than what happens in the classroom. Philadelphia’s centuries-old architecture, historic music scene, and vibrant visual and performing arts make the City of Brotherly Love a culturally dynamic and influential place. The best of Philly’s past, present and future sits within blocks of the University of the Arts’s doors, accessible by foot, bus or train. On any given day, experience renowned architecture, discover public art, listen to live music or see world-class performances just by hanging out around the UArts campus. And when you need a break from all that practice and time in the studio, relax in the UArts residence halls, where your neighbors include fellow artists, musicians, writers, and performers from around the world. RESIDENCE HALLS + ADVISORS
Apartment-style, air-conditioned residence halls come with shared bedroom, living room, kitchenette or micro-fridge and private bath for each unit. Washing machines + dryers are available in all residence halls for a fee.
THE SCENE
SUPERVISION
A number of undergraduate students and professional staff members reside in the residential halls and supervise students in the Pre-College Summer Institute. All Residential Life staff members report to the Director of Student Life, who is actively engaged in the welfare of each Pre-College Summer Institute student. The residence halls are staffed with a security officer 24 hours per day, and students wear UArts photo identification to gain access to their dorm building. No guests are permitted in the residence halls. MEAL PLANS
In order to foster a spirit of community, we require all Summer Institute Residential students to participate in a meal plan, and we encourage commuters to participate as well. COMMUTER MEAL PLANS are optional and include lunch, Monday through Friday. RESIDENTIAL MEAL PLANS include breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. The Dining Services team is committed to providing food for all types of dietary needs and lifestyles including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. 28
STUDENT WELLNESS: COUNSELING + HEALTH SERVICES
Certified nurses and counselors are on campus to provide wellness services to Summer Institute students. Free and confidential counseling services are available to students who need or request assistance. EVENINGS + WEEKENDS
Academic and social activities will be scheduled during all evenings. On Saturdays, field trips are scheduled for students in all programs, and Sundays will be used to explore Philadelphia.
OPEN HOUSE FOR UNDERGRADUATE + PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAMS SATURDAY, MARCH 25
Tour our campus and meet faculty, former students and Pre-College staff. In person auditions and portfolio reviews will be held for prospective students in Art, Media + Design, Dance, Jazz + Contemporary Music, and Theater. Register online at
