In acting studio script analysis and the Stanislavski method will be used to get students to work truthfully, deeply and collaboratively. Instructors will teach you how to honor your impulses, break scenes down into beats, work with action and intention and objective, navigate obstacles, as well as develop full and complex characters. Offered in Fall SS 219
ALTERNATIVE PAINTING
Art was never made to have boundaries and this painting course is about the lack thereof. If you are open to rinsing off painted surface, redefining parameters and using unconventional tools, then this class is for you. We will explore batik surfaces, recreate edges and create imagery in unconventional ways. Prior knowledge of color theory is helpful as space and rhythm will be discussed. Offered in Fall + Spring SS 112 ANIMATION This class begins with the basic fundamentals of hand-drawn animation, timing and motion studies. You will work with a professional animator to master a variety of techniques, including stop-motion animation. By the end of the class, you will create a short animated movie recorded on DVD. CREATIVE WRITING: MEMOIR
Everyone has a story to tell, what’s yours? Learn the art of writing compelling creative nonfiction, the fastest growing genre in publishing. This class will teach you how to focus your story and draw out key elements like setting, plot, character and dialogue. Students will have the opportunity to workshop material created both in and out of class. Offered in Spring

SS 123 CREATIVE WRITING: SHORT STORY Express yourself through the art of the written word and learn the fundamentals of what makes a good short story. Study basic strategies of writing dialogue, developing scenes and characters, creating settings and more. This class emphasizes generating new material, in-class discussions and revision. Offered in Fall SS 109
DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY: EXPERIMENTING WITH FILM
This course introduces you to the basic techniques for working with black-andwhite film, including processing your film, and making silver prints in a wet darkroom. This course also looks at experimental photo processes and nontraditional ways to consider the photographic image by exploring processes such as pinhole cameras and cyanotypes. You will need a 35mm manual film camera for this course. Offered in Spring SS 131 DIGITAL FILMMAKING Learn to enhance the quality and look of your video images. This course is devoted to the development of digital video camera skills. Techniques in shot composition, lighting and exposure are covered in detail for both beginners and those with prior experience. Learn to position the camera and study the cinematography secrets of independent films and Hollywood classics. You will complete hands-on production exercises each week and leave with a team-developed, portfolio-quality final project. Offered in Fall

DOCUMENTARY FILM
Learn the fundamental tools of documentary filmmaking including producing, directing, camera, lighting and editing. Apply what you learn by creating a short observational film and producing group projects under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Following production and post-production of your projects, screen your work with classmates and engage in critiques and discussion. Offered in Spring SS 101
DRAWING I: THE ESSENTIALS
Explore the fundamentals of basic drawing by honing your observation skills while working from still life, models and landscapes. Work with charcoal, pencil and ink to develop basic skills such as perspective, light and shadow, composition and tonal variations. A historical understanding of drawing is also part of the coursework. Offered in Fall + Spring SS 125
DRAWING II: ADVANCED PROJECTS
Working with line and tone in black and white and color, you will explore issues of structure, space and light. Emphasis is on design and composition as you work toward more sustained studies and finished drawings. Work from still life, the urban landscape and nude models while experimenting with a variety of media including pencil, charcoal, contĂŠ crayon, pastels, and toned and colored papers. Prior drawing experience required. Offered in Fall + Spring

FASHION + FIBERS: SEWING + PATTERN-MAKING BASICS
Every great fashion begins as a pattern. In this class you will copy a pattern from an already existing garment to design your own unique piece. Learn how to manipulate patterns and utilize drafting changes to create new styles. This class will focus on basic sewing and pattern-making skills, with a brief tutorial on fabric dyeing. Offered in Fall SS 168
FASHION + FIBERS: SURFACE MANIPULATION + DYEING
In this class you will design a garment from an existing pattern to create a new unique piece with an emphasis on dyeing and surface manipulation of cloth. In addition to dyeing, you will also learn advanced sewing machine skills such as embroidery and drawing with a sewing machine. Offered in Spring SS 103
FIGURE DRAWING
This course introduces you to the fundamentals of anatomy and drawing from the nude. Develop drawing and visual skills while working primarily from the skeleton and nude models. You will learn basic anatomy, gesture, structure, proportion, line and tone. Prior drawing experience is required. Offered in Fall + Spring SS 104
GRAPHIC DESIGN I: THE ESSENTIALS
Learn fundamental design processes and master visual knowledge by experimenting with form, space and composition. In this course, you will focus on key elements for visual communication such as type design, layout and image treatment. You will work in various media and ultimately produce work digitally. Projects may include a poster or a cover for a CD or book. Offered in Fall + Spring 5

GRAPHIC DESIGN II: ADVANCED PROJECTS
This class explores methods available to those in graphic design, advertising and other commercial arts. You will become familiar with and develop projects in various computer software programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. The fundamentals of typography including composition, layout and interaction with text and image are also explored. Previous drawing, design and computer experience is required. Offered in Spring

INTERACTIVE GAME DESIGN
In this class, you will explore how games work, how to make them, why they are important and how they help us understand our world and social interactions. Learn to construct logical narratives and rules that will create an active space in which gaming can take place. Use interface and experiential design skills to program, write and design interactive games. Offered in Fall SS 126 INTRO TO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
Learn the elements involved in making your own graphic novel and comic illustrations— from conceptual stage to illustration and beyond. This class will emphasize character and narrative development and expand your writing and drawing skills. Strong storytelling and drawing skills are required.
This course is an introduction to the basic organization, interaction and function of the many arms of the music industry. By exploring how entrepreneurship, marketing, copyright, law, technology and distribution operate in the modern industry, this course will help illuminate the complex relationships that define and shape the industry now, historically and in the future.

JEWELRY + METAL DESIGN
In this class you will bring stories to life by making images that can be masterful works of art or practical illustrations. Learn both the hand-drawn and digital processes used to create images for a number of exciting applications such as children’s books, advertising campaigns, music promotion, clothing apparel, packaging and comic books. Strong drawing skills are essential.
Work in the University’s metals studio to learn sawing, piercing, soldering, riveting and finishing techniques. You will gain a foundation in metalsmithing and design while creating unique jewelry or small sculptural objects.

In this course, your heightened perception is developed as you explore the study of color, surface and composition using acrylic paints and working with still life and nude models. Color theory and paint mixing techniques are addressed as you learn the fundamentals of painting. Prior drawing experience is required.

In this class you have the opportunity to work on paintings of the nude figure over multiple sessions. Explore composition, balance, proportion, scale and shape. Technical aspects of painting such as value, color, form and style are also addressed. You may work in your preference of oil or acrylic. Prior drawing and painting experience is required. PHOTOGRAPHY I: THE ESSENTIALS
This course is for those wanting to move past shooting in automatic mode to gain more control of your pictures. Learn the foundations of photography—aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lenses and depth of field—while also exploring how to use composition, light, color, and tonality to create more dynamic images. This class will include hands-on shooting opportunities, analysis and critique. Create a solid foundation in the medium and take your images to the next level. Offered in Fall + Spring SS 189
PHOTOGRAPHY II: ADVANCED PROJECTS
If you know photography basics and are ready to expand your creative and technical skills, this class is for you. Learn the power of your digital SLR by shooting RAW files. Also explore the power of Adobe imaging programs, where you can make adjustments and manipulate your images. Through lectures and assignments, take on aesthetic and compositional aspects of photography, as well as conceptual ideas to work toward developing a body of images.

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION
What are colleges looking for in a fine art portfolio? Work with a variety of 2-D media to create between four and six pieces suitable for a college application portfolio. Subjects of study include the human figure (nude models), portraiture, design and still life. You will have an opportunity to review work you created in and outside of class with a UArts admissions counselor. This course is limited to high school juniors and seniors. PRODUCT DESIGN
Creating a better human experience by making enhancements to everyday design is at the center of product design. Instructors teach three-dimensional design and assist students in fabricating finished products as well as prototypes. In class, learn how to recognize a product’s meaning in culture and context and what is effective design in today’s world. Offered in Fall SS 115
SCREEN PRINTING
Study the craft of silk screen printmaking by mastering the photo-emulsion process and building an edition of prints. Learn to layer colors and images onto a variety of papers or fabrics. You can print your own hand-drawn images or use photographic or digital images to create your compositions. Offered in Spring

SS 124 SCULPTURE + INSTALLATION

This class focuses on the use of found objects and non-traditional materials to realize a three-dimensional form or installation. The emphasis is on generating ideas and using these ideas to create large-scale objects and environments. Challenging your notions of what art is and what it can be, by experimenting with different media and manipulating materials to best express your ideas is encouraged.
Follow in the footsteps of great street photographers like Cartier-Bresson, Atget and Friedlander by capturing everyday life with your lens. Explore concepts such as “the decisive moment,” camera controls and historical context. You’ll put these concepts to use on walking trips to local Philadelphia parks, markets and galleries to transform the conventional into the exceptional.
Offered in Spring SS 218 SKATEBOARDING + MEDIA If you are a skateboarder or skate videographer/photographer, you’ve come to the right place. This class will have skate sessions at local skate spots such as Paines Park, FDR, Pops and Greys Ferry to photograph and film classmates and locals as they skate. Classes will focus on video and photo techniques to use while capturing skateboarding, as well as introduce new techniques and equipment. Images and clips will be brought back into the classroom to print and edit what is captured. You will need to bring your skateboard and one video or digital photography camera to class. It is recommended you have enough skateboarding skill to comfortably follow behind someone on a skateboard. Offered in Fall + Spring SS 121 STREET ART: FIBERS Use knitting, crocheting, weaving and other techniques to participate in the guerilla-style graffiti technique of yarn-bombing. This course will explore the history and concepts behind this growing art form. Using these techniques, you will learn how to create “cozies” and turn ordinary objects into new works of art.
