ART, MEDIA + DESIGN LOOKBOOK 2015

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER INSTITUTE Art, Media + Design program is the country’s most dynamic summer program for passionate high school art students. This immersive program enables students to experience what art school at the university level is like and learn from the same nationally recognized artists and professors who teach in the undergraduate programs. The four-week intensive allows students the opportunity to choose two majors and two electives from a broad range of offerings. Students are immersed in art from the inside out - attending performances, gallery shows, lectures, master classes and museum exhibitions in one of the oldest, largest and most artistically innovative cities in the country. Our students are independent thinkers from around the globe. Through their experience in the Summer Institute program, students are transformed from making high school projects to thinking like artists with personal visions and comprehensive portfolios of work. This book is a glimpse at the student work from summer 2015.

LEA’S ARTIST STATEMENT

PHOTOGRAPHY GRAPHIC NOVEL

I wouldn’t say I have an “artistic vision.” It’s more like a master plan to raise artistic awareness. Many people see art and either think, “Oh this is cool. I’ve never seen this before,” or “Wow, I’ve never seen it done like that before.” Not saying that’s a bad reaction. It’s not. But when people look at my art I don’t just want a reaction. I want to get the gears in the brain turning; I want to see inspiration in their eyes. I want them to walk away and realize that any form of art, no matter what it is, it does not have to be gloom and doom or philosophical all the time—if that’s your style, that’s good. If not, then create what makes you happy. I want them to walk away and remember that art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. I should never have to compromise the message nor the content of my work for anyone. Don’t judge my art. If you don’t like my work, then don’t look.

I get my inspiration from daily tasks and the people around me. I enjoy pulling concepts from everyday life and expressing them through a wide variety of mediums. My goal is to never get comfortable with a certain medium, scale, or subject. Often times my art is mixed media because I find it interesting how different materials interact with one another. Through these endless possibilities, I strive to make ordinary events more captivating.

LAUREN’S ARTIST STATEMENT

Over the past few years, I have been exploring different techniques and mediums in the hopes of developing my own unique style. I work in watercolor, charcoal, and ink and have been building my technical skills so that I can transition more easily to digital. My work often focuses on those around me, and I am greatly interested in the figure and human expression, particularly that of females. I aim to go to school to become an illustrator, shifting from portraits and life drawings to more imaginative and enchanting pieces. In the future, I intend to express emotion with the content of my art so that it is relatable and enthralling.

Art has always been a way for me to show others a different outlook on me as a person and a way to express myself. I am very interested in creating a new style that anybody can wear. Within my religion, I find that females are usually wearing very similar things, black with jewels or a patterned garment. My plan is to create a flashy yet casual look that we can wear and still be modest with our religious attire. It will also be a look that other people could wear as well. I really like to dye things and work with colors, matching them, patterning them, and putting my own color to my very own design. Yarn bombing a bus station was a first for me. I feel as if yarn bombing or street art is a way for artists to express themselves freely for anybody to walk around and see. Street art is also something really fun to do with your free time, and it can be anything. It is very interesting to put up things having your very own perspective of it and also the perspective of others.

My work explores the relationship between color and emotion. With influences from Patrick Kelly to Warhol, I try to use bold color choice and fun subject matter to intrigue the viewer. I am interested in how everyday life inspires people, specifically city life. Ever since I was little, I have been fascinated by New York City and how the city made me feel. A common theme among my work is the use of mixed media and clear focal points. My goal is to get people excited about art and hopefully inspire others to find themselves on an art path as well. I am the kind of person who is always smiling, and I try to reflect that happiness in my work.

I first became interested in creating short films after being elected historian of my school orchestra. Initially, the objective for many of my earlier videos was to inspire students to take orchestra as an elective. I fell into the habit of using strong themes of lighthearted humor to incite student interest for the program. Since then, I have continued to use humor and eventually satire to portray daily life. I edit my films through programs such as iMovie, Adobe Premiere, and Adobe After Effects. In future films, I aspire to put more emphasis on the coloring, composition, and framing of my shots.

Wanting to be loved and being loved is something that everyone wants and craves. Because of my strong desire to feel wanted it shows in my writing. I tend to use the fact that people want to have their own cute moments with their own significant others; that is usually portrayed in my work. I often find myself using examples from social media to incorporate in my stories. Other people have a serious influence on me, and my favorite writers are Shel Silverstein and Robert M. Drake. And while in this program writing was not my main focus, it’s my main focus throughout the whole art category. I hope to maybe put out a romance series to make people feel loved even if they aren’t in a relationship. My actual goal in life is to be a profiler in the FBI so sometimes that goal is incorporated in my stories.

Storytelling is a universal way of spreading ideas and point of views on different events. I love to convey these kinds of ideas through collections of portraits and street photography. I personally appreciate minimalistic aspects in photographs, showing simple settings with simple subjects, and I try to show those kinds of elements within my work. Taking photographs is important to me because I feel like it’s the best way to send messages and tell stories in a unique way. I’d say that among my peers my work is looked upon as influential and containing many important elements to successful photographs. In a few years, I see myself working as a professional photographer.

My work focuses on capturing human relationships and emotions. I am interested in taking photographs that people would not search for, but something that is there that they don’t seem to notice. In my photos, I want people to look at things differently in a way where something that seems so ordinary can be seen as something thought provoking. My main objective is to show everyday people in a candid and vulnerable way. My hope is that I am making my audience feel connected to my photos through my use of capturing raw emotion between people on the other side of my lens.

I get lost on the streets and in the architecture of places. My work is inspired by the unnatural nature of cities. I capture the noise, the movement, the everyday rush, as well as the nature’s essence, using organic materials and the vivid colors it offers. I’m trying to figure myself out as well as my art. What makes my art unique is that it’s always honest, and I want my art to express who I am. I want my art to give people a sneak peek of what goes on in my head and how I view the world. Nothing really motivates me to make art; it’s just the medium I use to cope with life. My wild imagination has become a way for me to find purpose and understand my surroundings. The influences of our world and society are what helped me see things with a new curiosity. I found myself becoming more interested in using the skills I know to help organizations that help with human rights and societal oppression. I realized that being an artist comes with being a loner because you have to be able to stand by your work and defend your mind. I want to be an artist that involves taboo topics with her messages, an artist who makes everyone relate to an emotion—someone who can look at her art or her projects with other collaborators and be proud that her name is included. At the end, I just want to be happy, and the reality is that’s all that matters.

For me, I always thought art wasn’t a true talent of mine. So something made me want to give up on it, but when I stopped drawing it just didn’t feel right. Every time I write, it turns into me wanting to draw; that’s all I think about. Art helps me to express my true feelings, and I love that it’s different types of arts that can help motivate people in life because it really helps to motivate me. Painting relaxes my mind, figure drawing helps me to see through other people, creative writing allows me to express my emotions, and sculpture helps me to build on my life. What made me want to do art? Everything I look at because I see art in everything. It’s really a gift, and I thank UArts for allowing me to see that.

CHARLES’ ARTIST STATEMENT

Most of my influence comes from sci-fi movies such as “Ex Machina” and almost all of Christopher Nolan’s movies due to his storytelling strength and the vast worlds he creates. Neill Blomkamp is also another inspiration of mine because he integrates real world conflicts in his beautifully constructed world. Ray Bradbury is one of my literary inspirations due to his ability to create emotion in his Sci-fi stories, which is very important in filmmaking. FILMMAKING CREATIVE WRITING EXPERIMENTAL PHOTO STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

I make films set in sci-fi because they question the limit of what humans can do and what we can become, such as Neill Blomkamp’s “Elysium” that shows a world where social classes have been separated on vast level. A constant theme in my work is humanity being put against constant external or internal foes that challenge them physically and/or mentally. This is shown through realistic colors and moods to give a serious element. Dream sequences also play an important roll in giving us a view into the mind of a person. My objective in filmmaking is to bring in fresh new ideas such as possibilities that humans or “good” may not always prevail over foreign attackers or evil because that reflects life in a more realistic way. My films are targeting the thinkers, the dreamers, action-buffs, and science fiction nerds—the people who like to immerse themselves in a futuristic environment filled will high-octane action.

I draw fantasy comics and characters in pencil. I like to draw mainly for fun because it relaxes me. I am inspired by comic books and artists like Stan Lee and Marv Wolfman, who are the creators of Marvel characters and the Teen Titans comics respectively. TV shows that I see young girls watch like My Little Pony and Ever After High inspired me too because my characters have that cute child-look that kids would love to see in comics. I make characters by tracing the head and face of one to get the other ones to have the same look and size. If my characters are of a different scale, it drives me nuts. I make my characters for enjoyment. My friends and family love to see something new that I have created. My vision for the future is learning to animate my characters so I can see them come to life on screen. I have been taking the Creative Writing class to dig deeper into my characters’ thoughts and habits. That class has been helping me write more about their origin stories and their lives. My audience is mainly friends and family, but I’m starting to use them for art school applications too. I enjoy doing what I do, and that is the best job to have.

Many people struggle with how they see themselves and how they think others may perceive them. My work focuses on identity and conceptions of self. Through my self portraits - like Francesca Woodman and Carrie Weems, two photographers who have helped inspire my work - I strive to show my identity and personal struggles through traditional black and white film images. In addition to this, I display the image of who I am psychologically at this pivotal time in my life. I feel that social media has made physical representation of a certain image that society finds “beautiful” extremely important and has warped our ability to see others and ourselves clearly. In my images, I want to show the honest truth of my most intimate parts of my psyche and struggle in finding my identity.

When it comes to the artistic field, I tend to turn to the more simplistic. Photography allows me to hone into the small, lovely details of life that many of us tend to overlook. Fashion and Fibers also give me the chance to emphasize the importance of intricacies in clothing and how we dress. Great deals of us do not recognize the beauty and craftsmanship in what we wear. Not only do we forget about the elements of things around us, but human interaction as well. Clear conversation is something our society and graphic design assists me in connecting with the viewers through nonverbal communication.

As a child, animation was always there for me, mystifying me with its illusions of magic and faraway places. I now try to capture this allusive feeling of nostalgic, child-like wonder by incorporating styles reminiscent of classic works such as Princess Knight, Fantasia, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. In my work, I also strive to include modern twists and turns to make it relatable to all audiences. I am inspired by the struggles of nature over man as seen in films such as “Princess Mononoke” and “Fern Gully”. Music inspires my art. I want vibrant colors that course through your veins the way the bass does at a loud concert, and I want composition that flows together like notes and chords. Sometimes my art sings a simple, soft song like a lullaby, but that does that make it any less beautiful. Other times it conveys strong ideas with lots of character like an anthem. Either way, the art makes you feel something, and it changes you a little bit. It brings back a memory or evokes an emotion. Often I make art to preserve a memory or to help me visualize a certain mood. Musicians do the same thing, and that is why music inspires me.

As well as learning through other people, I learned a lot about myself through my art work. Most of the classes I took this summer were new, allowing me to have new learning experiences for me. I’ve always been intrigued by human emotion. To me, emotions add depth to just about everything. As an artist, I work with smallscale acrylic or watercolor portraits in order to make an attempt at expressing hidden emotion. I am inspired by Spanish photographer Cristina Otero, who specializes in dramatic portraiture. My work is similarly emphasized with dramatic additions, such as drippy effects and/or extreme color usage. I focus on capturing the emotions that make us human. Without emotions, life would be drab and boring, like a grayscale. Emotions are like color, vibrant and dull alike. My aspiration as an artist is to honestly portray who we are, no matter how hard we try to hide it.

I am inspired by the work of c2oh, omocat, Yoji Shinkawa, and Kaneoya Sachiko. I am inspired by their subject matters, figures, and colors. So many of my pieces consist of human figures, and I try to incorporate an interesting color palette. In many of my personal pieces, I try to project my own feelings into my subject matter. I use watercolor, alcohol based markers, and graphite for many of my traditional pieces, and I have been using Photoshop for my digital works. In the future, I would like to create concept art for videogames and movies and maybe try to create my own comic. Whether it’s a movie, a song, a photograph, or a drawing, art has always been part of my life. Since I decided to become an artist, my desire was to create meaningful and lasting works of art that can connect and touch the audience using what I consider the fundamental feelings of the human being, such as love, sadness, anger, despair, and passion. I aim to leave a mark on the viewer’s mind by taking full advantage of the tools that were given to me in class. With everything I learned, I gathered a couple of short films, photographs, and performances throughout the summer. Every single one of my creations was carefully imagined and crafted in order to be successful, but also to contain important pieces of my identity. An identity that contains a mixture of various cultures, beliefs, and stories of which I’ve lived - such as leaving my home country, Colombia, at 9 in order to start a new life in Mexico, or sharing my faith in God. If I’m going to tell you a story, I’d rather show it to you. This is why film appeals to me. I write my films, I direct them, and if the need arises, I will also act in them. My imagination is unstoppable, always coming up with new stories and situations that capture my thoughts for hours. My work leans very heavily into the dramatic. I also have a love of action, brawls, and full-scale battles, which are constant companions to my stories. My work can be difficult to digest for some, given I enjoy pulling the rug out from under people. This is something that will always spark discussions. After seeing a film I’ve created, I want people to debate and talk about it; I want to make my viewers think. I want to inspire.

An intricate concept can be displayed simplistically. I communicate this through short films. In my work, I take both the realistic and unrealistic aspects of human life and the mind and create something meaningful and deep. I pull in viewers through curiosity. Part of this process is through visually setting a scene, which I feel is extremely important to my work. My art speaks to many because of this. I do not want my work to blow over people’s heads but for them to rather think critically. I want everyone to walk away from my art learning something new.

My styling of pictures includes enlarging small details, and I prefer to use the rule of thirds, lines, and reflections to allow the viewer to observe the entire image. The memories that I capture in pictures center on small details of everyday life missed by everyday priorities and distractions. I tend to confront my task by waiting and observing until it is the decisive moment for the picture to be captured. I feel that the patience for a picture results in a more fulfilling image.

I have been doing Art, Media, and Design since 2010. I was 13, so I guess you can say I found out what I wanted to be at a young age and that all my goals I set have been completed. Most of my work exudes royalty and elegance. Since this is the tone that I want my work to embrace, I mostly use brass and nickel metal. I use these types of metals because of their strong resemblance to gold and silver. I like making jewelry because it takes my mind off of the stresses of school. The process of making jewelry requires techniques such as sawing, filing, and sanding, which are very repetitive. These techniques can take hours depending on the complexity of the piece. I find that the process of making jewelry puts my mind in a kind of meditative state that allows me to forget any stresses that may be going on in my life.

ASHLEY’S ARTIST STATEMENT

I want my work to focus on bringing out strong emotions from people through films. I am inspired by the empathy that makes people become a part of the film they are watching. To do this, there are many techniques I can use. Lighting sets the tone of the film. Different angles help give different points of view of the same scene. These things help capture the audience’s attention. Another thing that brings about strong emotions is character relatability. In order to make my characters relatable, I try to make them have characteristics that real people have, even if it’s only the color of their hair. I also use films that have inspired me for reference. Some films that have inspired me are “The Lovely Bones,” “I Am Legend,” and “Ghost Rider.” These films inspire me because all of them are set in reality but deal with things that are imaginary. I enjoy making things that are set in the real world but aren’t always filled with real beings. I want to create films that bring people into the world of both reality and imagination.

As an artist, I work hard to create animations that trick the mind into thinking it is there in the animation. By acting out the actions before I start drawing, I’m able to make it as realistic as possible. I do not merely want to recreate actions that are humanly possible, but those that allow for a little interpretation. Throughout my recent animations, I’ve been exploring simple actions and how to devise them to be not so simple. I end up questioning what isn’t possible when scrutinizing my stream of thought. Equally important, I bring my own experiences, such as images I have formulated into my mind as a childhood cartoon watcher. Using technology, for instance, a computer, or older resources such as a pencil and paper, I’m able to strive for my dream of being a professional movie or game animator.

Sometimes art doesn’t have to evoke deep emotion. Sometimes art can be made simply to be admired. In my paintings, I capture moments of my life that I find beautiful, pleasant, and relaxing. I want my art to be viewed as something that is comforting and that people can relate to. By using oils as my primary medium, I am able to create representational paintings of landscapes and portraits of people who inspire me. I produce these observational paintings because I find it enjoyable, and I hope that my art is enjoyed by others as well.

My work tends to be on the more cartoony side, but that doesn’t mean it has no meaning. My sketches, although sometimes drawings of other’s characters, are usually animal or human representations of people or events in my life. My inspirations are feelings, conversations, or arguments that I turn into inked and colored pieces of art. Although, I‘ve also started to like to sketch out stories that are either based off of dreams, late night ideas, or stories that have been known for ages that I add a twist to. My art, mostly for expressing myself through pictures, is also starting to strive toward the entertainment or enjoyment of others.

Wearing a bright color and being able to carry it properly is a street art in itself, which makes the surrounding area look more beautiful.

ILLUSTRATION ART FOR GAMES CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: ILLUSTRATION FIGURE DRAWING

My work primarily consists of digital paintings made using Photoshop and mainly lies within the realm of fantasy and science fiction, depicting characters and scenes from other worlds. Since I was a child, I have been vastly engrossed in the world of fantasy and imagination; in fact, I spent most of my time inside that world. That childish imagination is still a big part of me, and it shows through my work. My inspiration comes from games, movies, and books. Anything that gives me fantastical visual imagery whether on a screen or in a page, feeds my imagination and my passion for creating. I use my illustrations to describe what I see in a way that anyone can understand, and I also use them to bring ideas and concepts to life so that others may jump inside and enjoy the worlds that they depict. My desire is to become a concept artist for video games and movies, like my idol Feng Zhu who I’ve learned more from than any art teacher.

The moment I stepped on a skateboard I fell in love with it. The more I got into the sport, I realized that the media part of skateboarding is actually very important, as it can get a skater recognized by a company, help sell a company’s product, or even just make skating more exciting. When I see a photo or a video of a skateboarder, I like to see a great camera angle because it makes the skater look better than he or she actually is. I would like to do the same in my work as a progressing skateboard photographer and videographer. If I can’t be the skater in the video or photo, I would like to be the one taking the picture or filming. I am so in love with skateboarding that whatever I do for a living one day, I would like it to be in the skateboarding industry. Skateboarding media is a fun and perfect way for me to make a living and do what I love at the same time.

I love to make art. I like to animate, take photographs, draw things, play music, and much more. I make art because it’s fun to do. It gives my life meaning and purpose, and I love to entertain others. My work doesn’t always have a defined meaning behind it, as I want the viewer to find their own meaning in my work. People live many different lifestyles and face all kinds of problems, so I enjoy when they can see my work and find meaning that relates back to their lives. I don’t like to restrict myself to one or two mediums or subject matters either, which is why my artwork varies quite a bit from piece to piece. In the future, I hope to work towards creating artwork that shares common themes and is even more thought-provoking. My animations are hand drawn and edited together using Adobe Premiere. My drawings are charcoal on newsprint or charcoal paper. My photography is shot with a Nikon D90 and edited in Adobe Photoshop. I like to boost saturation on my color photography to give off a more intense feel, but some of my photography is black and white, which I feel can also pull this off very well. That said, I like to experiment with color when it comes to photography so not all of my pictures follow this.

My work is its own creation. I am influenced by things around me and dreams. I use mostly water color and ink. I am self-taught and have taken art classes in and out of school to help me develop and grow. I mostly draw female faces and busts because I like how smooth the female features are. The themes that appear in my work are often creepy or cute. Most of my paintings are of blood, bones, and gore but also include the female’s soft features, flowers, and over-exaggerated large eyes. My only objective is for it to be enjoyed, and I hope someday for my art to be permanently put on people’s skin. The only problem with this world of art I’ve put myself into is that everything needs to have a meaning. Mine doesn’t. It is simply what you want it to be. My opinion of my own art is not necessarily right because there is no correct answer to art. A successful piece of art is a piece that makes you feel something. Hopefully in ten years my art will be on skin and be alive.

As an artist, one of my biggest goals is to make people laugh and think, in that order. Primarily, I make statements that are limited to my personal experience more so than to politics or current events because I don’t like to be showy or act like I know what I’m talking about. I just like getting personal, moral opinions (or feelings and experiences) across in interesting ways to as many people as I can. The media I primarily use are pens and pencils, vector art, stencils, and spray paint. Graphic design and illustration are my two major focuses.

In my work, I try to incorporate abstract qualities as well as keeping realism. Most work I create is traditional rather than digital. I use mediums such as colored pencils, pen and ink, graphite, and paint. I try to incorporate as many mediums as I can while creating a piece. The subjects in my pieces are either humans or animals. Using materials such as pen and ink and colored pencil helps me get the detail and color of the subject I’m drawing. There are so many artists I am influenced by, such as Salvador Dali, MC. Escher, Andy Warhol, and contemporary artists and illustrators such as Fumi Mini Nakamura, Josh Keyes, and Pat Perry. My objective for my work right now is to focus on illustration. I want to draw traditionally, but I also want to incorporate digital factors as well. Most of my work is from my own ideas, experiences and imagination, but I work from observation as well.

72

ANDREW’S ARTIST STATEMENT

Art, and more specifically animation, is the expression of the creators in most thoughts and feelings. Though the work has to be visually pleasing, at the same time it has to tell a story that the viewer can pick up on in a moment’s glance. My work strives to show my scattered thoughts and feelings combined into a few seconds of animation telling a short, but humorous, story. My greatest achievement would be the improvement in capability from when I started animating. When I began, my biggest struggle was my inability to express all the ideas I had for animations in a way that people could visually understand. Now through many hours of practice, I can fluently illustrate my emotions and ideas onto paper. Art, and animation specifically, should make everyone who sees it feel the emotions of the artist who created it. My work makes me laugh, and by doing so I hope it will make the people who see my work laugh. Later in life I hope to become an animator who, through my work, can make the whole world laugh.

Dreams, and their surreal, foggy quality, have fascinated me ever since I started having them. I can still remember dreams I had when I was seven, featuring the same themes and characters that have evolved into current dreams and my work. My characters mostly consist of caricatures of myself, whether through my physical characteristics or through a singular thought or idea I have. Physical portraits of myself are filtered through a humorous lens, ignoring beauty to better represent my own unique personality. My work deals with organic objects, shapes, and characters to coincide with the undulating and hazy effect of dreams. Recurring iconography such as paisley shapes and several characters continue their own timeline throughout my work and have evolved from doodles to finished pieces. Their stories will continue to expand past the borders of the paper they live on.

I am a mixed media artist. The scale of my work varies at times depending upon the media I work with. My subject matter tends to be controversial issues and events from my life. What motivates me to do what I do is the hopes that I can try and shed light to subjects such as bullying and depression. I aspire to try and make a difference in the world. Two people who have inspired and have helped mold my views on the world and my work are Jamie Hewlett and Ralph Steadman. Things that have also contributed to this are the 1920’s-1930’s time period and the Abstract Expressionist movement. Through my work I hope to inspire others to help strengthen one another, rather than tear each other apart over the competiveness in the world. I hope that I can show you and others through my work how much a simple word or image can change the world, how much each of us impacts one another on a daily basis, and how much a single image or word can help someone or completely tear them apart.

DESTINY’S ARTIST STATEMENT

I make photographs. The focal point of my art is to make people see what they can’t or don’t want to see. For example, my vision for my photographs is to show those around me that my depression is not a joke; it is very real and unavoidable. My pain went unnoticed for so long that hiding it became an everyday thing. Because unhealthy releases are against the norms of society, expressing myself became very difficult. Telling people became difficult, but showing someone is easier, by letting the photographs speak for me.

ANTHONY’S ARTIST STATEMENT

Beginning in my childhood, a passion for skateboarding arose. Even now, the emotions I felt then are still present. With any action sport comes the act of capturing motion, whether that is through video or photographs. In the present, skateboarding revolves around social media. There is always a constant flow of images and videos. Because of this, naturally I began taking photos and videos. When using a camera, one must create a vision of a composition before an image is shot. This composition and perception is discovered through experimentation. This experimentation involves going out and taking numerous pictures until you capture an image that you are pleased with. The pictures that you don’t like serve as a learning experience. You start to realize what you did wrong and in turn take better pictures. This relationship between trial and error can be seen both in skateboarding and photography. They are similar because the better you become at skateboarding, the fewer tries it takes to land a trick, and the better you become at photography, the fewer tries it takes to capture an image.

My goal is to explore the personalities of my characters to make them as believable as possible so that my audience is able to imagine them as if they were real living beings, as I do before I draw my character. My characters’ stories are usually dark, showing how they overcame a certain obstacle in order to pursue their ultimate goals in their current lives.
