Step One: IMAGINE. Step Two: DO. Your future has never felt closer. You’ve got big plans, right? Maybe you’ll create the next big thing. Rewrite history. Develop new industries. Or upend the status quo. But where do you start? Simple. A place known for doing all of the above—the University of Utah. Success requires two things: figuring out what you want to accomplish and then digging in to make it happen. With the right tools, experience, and dedication, anything is possible. Great institutions are defined by their ability to imagine what might be, and the resources they dedicate to making that happen. They are places where innovation and creativity live, research and artistry are in perfect harmony, and every student has the opportunity to define themselves and set their stage for future success.

Whatever you’re seeking—a job, a career, a calling—opportunity awaits and all things are possible at a place we call Imagine U.

Step One:

IMAGINE.

The view from the University of Utah is breathtaking from every angle. From the stunning high-mountain valley setting to the academic excellence and student experience, it’s the perfect place to follow your imagination. Founded through rugged individualism and perseverance over a century and a half ago, Salt Lake City showcases western beauty in a modern, urban setting. With a love for the arts, sciences, and culture, the city has grown into a destination for thought, entertainment, exploration, and innovation. With traditions grounded in the classics and a new focus on preparing students for today’s careers and future, the U (as it’s often called) embodies that same spirit. And as a proud member of the Pac-12 Conference, there’s a momentum and excitement at the University of Utah you can feel. It’s in our academic programs, student resources and support, cutting-edge research, and the new facilities and programs that are transforming our campus today.

RUTH WATKINS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Our commitment at the University of Utah is that every student will have an experience that changes his or her life. You belong here. This is your university. Imagine yourself here. Visit admissions.utah.edu/explore to watch Dr. Watkins’ video.

Sustainability Originally initiated by students, the University’s official sustainability efforts remain student-centric and academic-based to this day. Campus Life Whether you live on or off campus, there are so many ways to get involved, meet new friends, and explore all the things the U offers outside of class. Discover student groups and programs at PlazaFest. Explore the beauty of Red Butte Gardens & Arboretum. Attend free performances through the U & the Arts pass program. Join 6,000 of your classmates at Crimson Nights, one of the country’s largest annual campus celebrations. With museums, concert venues, theaters, student programs, and exciting Pac-12 athletics and game day events, you’ll want to join in the fun as soon as you get here.

Student Involvement All enrolled students are automatic members of the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU). Getting involved with this student-run organization provides all kinds of leadership opportunities (including student government), and makes your college experience more engaging and expansive. Throughout the year ASUU hosts free concerts, movies, dances, and events for students. In addition, the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center provides ample opportunity for students to reach out and serve the community through a variety of fun, interactive projects throughout the year. With over 500 student groups on campus, you’re sure to find something that interests you. From the traditions of the Greek system to groups focused on academics, service, and social clubs, we encourage all of our students—undergraduate and graduate— to get involved. To search, join, or create a club, visit ASUU’s website at asuu.utah.edu and search the “Student Groups Info” section.

Living on Campus Students who live on campus are significantly more likely to continue on towards graduation.* When you live on campus, you are at the heart of it all—immersed in a fun, vibrant environment with classmates, friends, and a supportive housing staff. Plus, there is always something to do since you are just minutes away from classes, study groups, awesome programs, or a University sporting event. And the convenience of delicious meals in the Peterson Heritage Center Dining Room allows more time for studying or exploring campus. Learn more at housing.utah.edu. * 90.74% of students living on campus during Fall 2013 returned for Spring 2014, compared to 76.82% of off-campus students returning.

COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJOR CLASS OF 2017

My greatest accomplishment since being here at the U is the amount of scholarship money that I have been able to collect over the course of these last two years. College can be really expensive but there are a lot of resources available to students that help make attending the U more affordable. Salt Lake City Stunning setting. Great pace of life. A vibrant arts scene. Incredible outdoor recreation in every direction. Salt Lake City has it all and more. Downtown is just five minutes from the University of Utah by car, mass transit, or bike. Utah’s capital has consistently ranked among the nation’s most livable cities and best college towns. From small beginnings, Salt Lake has grown into an impressively cosmopolitan and diverse place to live. Over 1 million residents live in the valley and enjoy the vibrant culture and downtown city center, distinctive neighborhoods, and reasonable cost of living. Between the farmers markets, festivals and concerts, sporting events, bustling restaurants, active social scene, and thriving arts community, the city offers something for everyone.

ALYSE MOURDOCK MARIETTA, GEORGIA MUSIC EDUCATION MAJOR CLASS OF 2015

I decided to come to the University of Utah after I came out for a visit and fell in love with the campus, the town, and the atmosphere that surrounds it. I love Salt Lake City because it is a small town feel in a bigger city. I am from a very big city so I like the small town feel and knowing where you are going all the time. Utah With mountains, lakes, deserts, and national parks to explore, Utah’s year-round recreational opportunities are world-renowned. When class is out, so are our students—out skiing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, kayaking, snowshoeing, golfing, you name it. We have seven ski resorts within 30 minutes of campus. There are five national parks within a five-hour drive, perfect for weekend road trips. If you’re interested in sticking around after graduation, you should know about the high-tech business corridor that is quickly expanding in the area. Companies like Adobe, Skullcandy, Oracle, IM Flash Technologies, eBay, and Overstock.com— among others—all call Utah home. In fact, Forbes recently ranked Salt Lake City second in the nation for college graduates to find work.

CHANDLER DEAN ALEDO, TEXAS HONORS BUSINESS MGMT. MAJOR CLASS OF 2018

Coming from out of state, you get to take in a lot of the state of Utah and the school itself and see things you don’t get to see anywhere else. I remember being in awe of the mountains and the fact that there were hiking trails and mountain biking trails directly behind the residence halls. This was something that was really cool that I was definitely pleased to take advantage of. Learn more about what that state of Utah has to offer to U of U students coming from out of state. We’ve made student success a key component of the Utah undergraduate experience because we see it in action every day and know that it will help open you to limitless possibilities. Imagine being involved in undergraduate-level research at one of the top research universities in the country. Academic Enrichment Programs

Join our Learning, Engagement, Achievement, Progress (LEAP) or BlockU programs, where you’ll earn credit and work as part of a small class of students under the mentorship of our top professors during your first year at the U. These great programs, and others like Diversity Scholars, help you focus on subjects like service, leadership, and education while also spending time in social activities outside of class. Do you remember those moments when a teacher or mentor had a great impact on your life and intellectual growth? You can be part of the MUSE Project (My Utah Signature Experience) where students connect with faculty, mentors, and community leaders to make those signature experiences happen on a daily basis. A well-rounded education benefits from viewing life through different perspectives—so we encourage all of our students to experience learning outside the classroom. Perhaps a semester or more studying abroad and immersing yourself in other cultures and viewpoints? Or stay close to campus and get involved in the many community service and learning projects we offer and benefit from helping others by making a difference in their lives— and yours. We’ve designed the Utah undergraduate experience to help you graduate with the tools, knowledge, and skills critical to making you a success both during your time at the U and in your career. And our Plan to Finish program will help you organize your course load and set goals to help you stay on track so you can graduate in four years. With so many choices and opportunities from which to choose, we know you’ll receive a deeper and more meaningful educational experience that will prepare you for wherever life takes you.

Global Engagement What is it like attending a university with a reach that extends around the globe and has the track record to prove it? It means having the resources and connections to recruit top faculty to campus while also branching out into the community, state, and world to offer unique learning experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Learn about building environmentally conscious and sustainable dwellings at Rio Mesa, a plot of red rock desert near Moab and Arches National Park that was donated to the University. Benefit from U partnerships with acclaimed Salt Lake arts programs like Ballet West or local business incubators. Or be a part of the national debate on key issues that affect us all at the Hinckley Institute of Politics. For a truly international experience, Learning Abroad offers hundreds of opportunities to spend a semester or more studying and immersing yourself in the culture and customs of cities across the globe. These exciting and challenging times are some of the most rewarding experiences you can have during your academic career. And with the new opportunities to study in South Korea at the the University of Utah Asia Campus, we’re getting closer to our mission of serving not just the people of Utah, but the world. Through technology and modern transportation, our connection to the world around us has never been stronger. Providing a 21st century education with an international perspective and the resources and opportunities relevant today and in the future is one of the U’s primary goals.

The University of Utah offers more than 100 Learning Abroad programs in more than 60 different countries. The Global Internship Program, run by the Hinckley Institute in partnership with the U’s Office for Global Engagement, has internships available in more than 50 countries around the world. No matter where you’re from, living on campus will help you get the most out of college. Consider that for Spring Semester 2014, the average GPA for freshmen living off campus was 2.6, while students living on campus averaged a 3.0.

Convenience Surrounded by the residence halls, the 24-hour Peterson Heritage Center (PHC) is the heart of the U’s residential living area. The PHC offers all the conveniences you’ll need to make life easier, like the PHC Dining Room, a service and information desk, study rooms, mailboxes, convenience store and cafe, recreation areas, and places to relax, hang out, and study with friends between classes. Living on campus also means less commuting and more time for other things—studying, sleeping, and spending time with friends. Instead of driving to class, you can walk or just hop on a campus shuttle or UTA bus (for free).

The College Experience The University of Utah will prepare you for your future, and when you live on campus, your entire college experience is right outside your door— classes, friends, and endless opportunities. It is here where you will create the connections and memories that last a lifetime. Housing fills up quickly. Learn more and apply at housing.utah.edu.

There are a variety of room types and layouts for first-year undergraduate students. All of the rooms are suite-style, which means you will share a bathroom with no more than four people. In some of the suites, you will also have a shared living room. Residence halls have all the amenities you will need including free laundry and utilities like wireless Internet and cable television. Furniture is also included in these spaces, and it is easy to move so that you can set up your room just the way you want. Students who live in the residence halls are required to have a meal plan. The Peterson Heritage Center Dining Room serves a variety of delicious meals on an all-you-can-eat basis for residents to enjoy. Incoming freshmen live in the Residence Halls, but upper class students have a variety of housing options available to them in one of our apartment communities. Learn more about those options at housing.utah.edu.

Lassonde Studios Take a deep dive into entrepreneurship and innovation by living at the Lassonde Studios. Opening in fall 2016, the $45 million facility will mix spaces for living, creating, and launching companies, initiatives, and careers. The Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute is now conducting a global search for 400 innovative students to live in the building. Learn more at lassonde.utah.edu/studios.

Dining on Campus Campus life is busy and exciting, and with all that’s going on, the last thing you want to worry about is your next meal. University Dining Services offers a variety of different meal plan options that allow you to eat almost anywhere on campus including the Peterson Heritage Center Dining Room and the Food Court in the Union building. There are also numerous cafés and convenience stores around campus that offer quick and nutritious options as well as specialized vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. To learn more about the different dining plans and places to eat on campus visit dineoncampus.com/utah

Majoring within the College of Health has been one of the best decisions that I’ve made while here at the U. The advisors are the best in the whole University because they have a certain passion for their departments and such a powerful drive to help their students succeed; they are so easy to talk to because of that. The support that they’ve given me has been what keeps my own passion and drive going towards my future goals. — JACOB BUSHMAN, College of Health major

The Honors College believes in the power of ideas to shape the world. Engage in a liberal arts and sciences education in an innovative learning environment where students are challenged to think, ask questions, take risks, and explore the full scope of the world around them. The work is demanding, the standards are high, but here students acquire the intellectual tools that will enrich their lives and enable them to thrive in a rapidly changing global community. The Honors College is both a curriculum and a community where students work closely with faculty and bring theory to action. honors.utah.edu

I’ve loved my experience in the Honors College. The classes are kept small, and the professors take personal interest in me. They don’t want any students to fall behind, and encourage us to succeed. The expectations are high, but thanks to the environment and the way classes are based on discussion instead of just lecturing, the rigor of the Honors College isn’t intimidating at all. It’s been a great experience for me. — LINDSAY McSWEENEY, Communication major
