Our New Home

UWS is so much more than just bricks and mortar. Our new campus will further facilitate our ability to Take the Lead in integrated health care education. The new campus will be an expression of shared values, a symbol of bold leadership and proof of the growing demand for evidence-informed, integrated, whole-person health care.

drilling down to the details about what we dreamed of in a new space, the same emphasis was repeated – we wanted a campus in which all people felt integrated. At the new site, it will be easier to move from classroom to clinic, from the library to the registrar, from business services to office hours with an instructor. This move is truly our mission of integration coming to life, in our work and academic spaces.” Director of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Michelle Cox, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS

Dr. Minga Guerrero: 2018 Alumna of the Year Dr. Dominga “Minga” Guerrero, 1984 graduate of University of Western States, was named the 2018 UWS Alumna of the Year.

well-rounded graduates UWS produces to advance the science and art of integrated health care.

UWS trustee Joyce McClure, DC, nominated Dr. Guerrero and has been inspired throughout her career by Dr. Guerrero’s dedication and compassion to the field.

Dr. Guerrero grew up in a family of migrant farm workers in Southern California. Their household, located on a large orange grove, included her great grandmother, grandmother, uncles, parents and siblings. The home was heated by a wood fireplace and they had an ice block refrigerator. One of her duties as a child was to use a plancha (cast iron) to iron incoming migrant worker’s clothes. Her abuela (grandmother) was the migrant camp’s curandera (healer) and was a large source of inspiration for young Minga. Group celebrating at the 2018 Homecoming reception

“Dr. Guerrero is really a beacon for female chiropractic physicians and to the advancement of the field overall,” said Dr. McClure. “She has done a tremendous amount of work and has gone above and beyond in every capacity. She really takes the time to observe issues at hand to make informed and wellreasoned decisions. Always a voice for clarity, honor, compassion and quality of chiropractic care, I can really think of few other doctors who have remained unsung for so long.”

Dr. Guerrero’s tenacity, advocacy and respect for the next generation of chiropractic physicians embodies the

“We lived together to support one another toward a more successful life in America,” said Dr. Guerrero. “This is where I learned the value of working together.”

In the 1960s, the Guerrero family moved to the desolate deserts of Joshua Tree and Death Valley. Dr. Guerrero’s father moved the family because, as Mexicans in Orange County, faced ongoing discrimination, such as only being allowed to use public swimming pools on the day before they were cleaned. The family was also denied access to many restaurants and her father was denied the ability to apply for an electrician license. “My father didn’t want us to continue to experience prejudice that might mold our little minds. He also always told us that we needed to work harder than everyone else, because Mexicans could be labeled as lazy. Our family’s war cry was, ‘¡Somos Guerreros!’– We Are Warriors!” Inspired by her abuela, Dr. Guerrero wanted to be a healing force for others as well.

“Being named the UWS 2018 Alumna of the Year means so much to me because University of Western States is my home,” said Dr. Guerrero. “I feel like the UWS community is my family. This school gave so much to me and I truly feel blessed to be able to pay it forward and help mentor the next generation. I am so

our UWS community is made up of more than 7,000 students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends from around the world. We’ve created a digital space for everyone to develop positive, meaningful and supportive connections. This trusted community is called UWS Switchboard. UWS Switchboard is a digital space to connect with the UWS community by asking for what you need and offering what you want to share including:

14

 jobs  shadowing

 patient referrals  practice management  advice

“I have loved using Switchboard since its inception. As a UWS faculty clinician, I am working directly with students who are constantly looking for shadowing or practice opportunities. Switchboard has been great for these kinds of connections, and I have found myself making them more often than before I used the platform. I really do prefer this to other forms of social media for professional connections and it’s super easy to use.” – Dr. Amanda Armington, UWS class of 2006, Attending Physician at UWS

2018 Alumnus Dr. Jaime Medina, Lands Associateship through Switchboard Kenneth Delp, DC, class of 2012, needed a Spanish-speaking chiropractic physician to join his clinic in a rural area south of Yakima, Washington. Recently graduated and fluent in Spanish, Jaime Medina, DC, class of 2018, was looking for an associateship and a new home for his family of four. Finding each other on UWS Switchboard, Dr. Delp and Dr. Medina created a strong team of service-oriented community chiropractic physicians in the Yakima Valley. “I will be working closely with the Hispanic population of the city and surrounding towns. I am looking forward to using my Spanish more actively and to becoming a close part of the community,” says Dr. Medina. Dr. Delp encourages others to use the platform, “UWS Switchboard helped me meet a colleague who will help me be successful in my practice and someone who I feel has the same standard of care after graduating from UWS.” Dr. Medina agrees, “I wouldn’t have this new opportunity following graduation had I not discovered UWS Switchboard. Getting to know the alumni relations department at the school was such a great thing for me. They are always actively looking to connect doctors with students who could benefit from their expertise and knowledge – all you have to do is ask.” Thank you to our Switchboard members! You are all vital to our community.

15

STUDENT REFERRALS The UWS student referral recognition program celebrates the important contribution of those who refer students who enroll at UWS to pursue their professional dreams. Whether referring a friend, patient, colleague or family member, you have the opportunity to contribute to the university’s legacy of excellence by encouraging a new student to embark on a life-changing professional path. What inspires you to refer students to UWS? “I believe in University of Western States and its vision. When it comes to referring students, it’s just the right thing to do! I know they will get the best education possible.” – Dr. Ali Masoumi, Doctor of Chiropractic class of 2010, MS-Sports Medicine class of 2016

What are your hopes for the students you referred? “My hope is that all the women I referred will be as inspired as I was and will continue learning, gathering information and applying it in whatever setting they find themselves in.” – Ms. Julianne Penner, MS-Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine class of 2016

16

Dr. Michael Pettet (middle), DC class of 2001 and UWS trustee referred his daughter, Ms. Danielle Pettet (left) to the doctor of chiropractic program last year. They are welcomed to the 2018 UWS homecoming reception by Dr. Joseph Brimhall (right), UWS president.

What our Alumni are Saying: ALUMNI AND FRIENDS EVENTS The alumni relations team partners with the office of the president and the UWS President’s Society to host alumni and friends events across North America. Our goal is to exchange ideas, facilitate meaningful connections and share our vision for the future of integrated health care.

2018 Alumni and Friends Events Stats at a Glance:

8

Last year we hosted eight alumni and friends events throughout the United States and Canada.

“UWS events create a unique opportunity for alumni and friends to come together and develop meaningful relationships. I’ve witnessed new collaborations among doctors on both sides of the border, which has resulted in a newfound collaboration between the American Chiropractic Association and the Canadian Chiropractic Association. We have also leveraged our connections to move evidence informed practice forward on the political landscape. These are all huge wins for UWS and for the chiropractic profession as a whole.” – Dr. Jennifer Forbes, Doctor of Chiropractic class of 2000, MS-Exercise and Sport Science class of 2015

300

We connected nearly 300 alumni and friends with each other.

30%

Roughly 30 percent of attendees volunteered to participate in the UWS Mentor Network by mentoring, allowing students to shadow them in practice, or by connecting with prospective students as ambassadors.

“The opportunity to meet my UWS colleagues at the American College of Nutrition conference was priceless. We felt so fortunate to be able to finally connect in person at the alumni and friends reception after so many hours on discussion forums, phone calls and video conferences. It truly felt like I had known them my entire life and was just reuniting with a large group of lifelong friends.”

Thank You! – Ms. Nicole Feehery, MS-Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine class of 2018

MEET YOUR ALUMNI RELATIONS TEAM What do we love most about our jobs? “I love facilitating connections between our students, alumni, friends and faculty that otherwise may have never come to be. If I can make an introduction that results in a dream job or provide a networking opportunity that leads to community members advocating for and advancing their profession, I’m excited and feel like I’m contributing to our mission.” – Julie Stutzman, Alumni Relations Manager

“I work with a team of fabulous women who are passionate about adding value to the UWS community. We are in a great position to facilitate meaningful relationships, help develop community leaders and encourage professional growth among our student and alumni populations. My favorite thing in life is to witness others making strides toward their goals and their wildest dreams. UWS Board of Trustees Message Personally, I’d like to share that being elected to chair the UWS Board of Trustees is truly an honor, and I’m aware I have very esteemed shoes to fill. I extend my sincerest thanks to immediate past board chair Robert Jones, DC, APC, who was recently elected president of the American Chiropractic Association. Dr. Jones’ dedication to transparency and consensus-building has made us a more engaged and effective board, and has made UWS a stronger university –  f inancially secure and well-positioned for short and long term sustainability. Finally, as we grow and change for the better, I want you to know that you are always at the heart of our deliberations and considerations. In 2019, I and my fellow Board of Trustees members

will do everything we can to assure your ever-increasing confidence, trust, and investments in this exceptional institution. Together, we are committed to Take the Lead in furthering the growth and distinction of UWS as a leader in the field of health care education.

Your resounding enthusiasm for our historic decision to relocate to an expanded, state-of-the-art campus was uplifting. Your contributions and encouragement will accelerate our ability to deliver world-class integrated health care education, graduating future leaders in patient-centered, whole-person health care. Be proud of your role in this.

UWS by the Numbers

In 2018, a dear friend and benefactor of University of Western States (UWS), who wished to remain anonymous, passed away at the age of 93. While not an alumnus of UWS, the benefactor had a great affection for the university and practiced as both a chiropractor and naturopathic physician in Hood River for more than 50 years. To support the UWS mission to advance integrated and conservative health care, the benefactor generously bequeathed more than $420,000. It was asked that the gift be unrestricted, allowing UWS the greatest flexibility in achieving its goals. For the past several years, the university has diligently focused on creating and advancing a planned giving program for alumni and friends. We are very fortunate to have received commitments from several generous benefactors who have chosen to support UWS as part of their estate. These donors share a common purpose to support the university’s mission to educate the best conservative health care professionals dedicated to delivering the highest quality patient care. Our donors truly embody what it means to Take the Lead and we couldn’t be more humbled by their continued support. Interested in learning how you can make a big difference today by providing for UWS in the future? Contact the development office at 503-847-2556 or giving@uws.edu.
