UWS Board of Trustees Message

"The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails."

– William Arthur Ward

It seems that 2021 has brought us more of the same. We have been buffeted by the winds of COVID and the only thing that remains constant in our lives is the changes this life brings. Changes in our practices, personal lives, changes on campus and changes in higher education.

When I reflect on our students, staff, faculty, administration and alumni, I see people that have pivoted in learning and pivoted in life. The resilience we have learned through this time will serve us going forward, but it has not been easy. We grieve the loss of life, the loss of opportunity and the loss of stability.

Through this time, I have witnessed the incredible resilience that our institution has demonstrated throughout the people in its community. Our institution remains a leader in health care education. Our alumni continue to lean into their communities and serve their patients with excellence and compassion. This institution truly reaches worldwide and we are an extension of each other, branches linked to the same strong tree.

As the new chair of the UWS Board of Trustees, I am thankful for the leadership of those who have gone before me and for the team of leaders I currently serve with. They have taken on the challenges of these past years with grace and strength and they have led well. I am thankful for our staff and faculty who day in and out, serve the needs of our students with integrity. I am thankful for the support of our alumni. Tangible support in the way of mentorships, student referrals and financial gifts are so very appreciated.

The changes aren’t over; they really never are. But as we move forward, may we lean in and continue to demonstrate the commitment and resilience that those who have gone before us have demonstrated over the long life of University of Western States.

With much appreciation,

Dr. Jennifer Forbes Chair, Board of Trustees Grad 2000, 2015
