RESEARCH RATED AS WORLD-LEADING OR INTERNATIONALLY EXCELLENT 1
Green innovation and sustainability
We’ve been leading pioneering research into novel materials and processes that will help solve advanced manufacturing and built environment challenges. We have projects focused on recycling, packaging and ways to reduce waste, and look to transform lives by addressing real-world energy problems with digital technological innovations. We’re contributing to projects addressing the importance of green spaces and exercise on wellbeing and brownfield regeneration research.

FOR RESEARCH CULTURE 2
Health and social care
We carry out advanced Molecular and Clinical Medicine research in chronic diseases and cancer, and look at how the healthcare sector uses 3D printing technologies, especially in the creation of prosthetics and 3D printed scaffolds for bone graft replacements and exploring the potential of bioengineering in tissue engineering, therapeutic delivery and modelling. We have exciting sports science programmes on football and virtual reality, and altitude training in judoka. We also have projects targeting elements of dementia, organ donation, and Parkinson’s disease.
Inclusive communities
The varied, important work we do under our research theme of inclusive communities includes work on queer theory and cultures; postcoloniality, decoloniality and race; the impact of microfinance on entrepreneurship
and poverty reduction; research into women’s safety around licensed premises; issues in special educational needs and disabilities; and increasing physical activity in socio-economically disadvantaged Black Country areas.
Research Excellence Framework
Research at the University of Wolverhampton is now at its highest ever level. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), more than half our research was judged as being internationally excellent (3*) or world-leading (4*).
