Day Camp for boys, grades K - 7 The University School Boys’ Day Camp is proud to be celebrating its 90th year, proving that good things do last! The camp prides itself in being a safe place where we will teach your son teamwork, sportsmanship, athletic and non-athletic skills, and pride in a job well done. Our beloved shop program is unique among area camps, and boys love to create and build their own projects in a supervised, safe environment. The city of Cleveland’s oldest operating camp has a strong tradition in combining fun activities with a truly educational experience. We know boys, and we create an environment where they can thrive. Counselors consist of experienced veterans and teachers combined with college and high school assistants. Our younger staff are chosen due to their accomplishments as students and leaders within their own schools, and many were former campers at the Day Camp who have chosen to come back and give back to the program they loved as a child. A big part of our success comes because we DO limit group size, and more stunning than any other fact is that we maintain a 6 to1 staff to camper ratio! We spend time getting to know your son and working with him to make his summer an enjoyable one. Campers swim twice each day (instructional and free swim). Tennis instruction is included in the older groups’ programs. Athletic skills as well as arts and

woodwork will be taught by counselors and specialists. Field trips focus on educational as well as recreational opportunities. The extensive indoor and outdoor facilities of the Shaker Campus provide the primary setting for these exciting, challenging, and fun pursuits. Where else can a boy get a full day of working with outstanding mentors, doing a variety of educational activities including woodshop and arts and crafts, enjoying exciting field trips, participating in fun, organized games and activities using the full range of the school’s athletic facilities, all in a safe and nurturing environment for only $230 a week? Extended Day options (before and after camp) and shuttle bus services are available. Campers bring their own bagged lunch and drinks and gather at outdoor picnic tables at lunchtime. Refrigeration is provided. The Boys’ Day Camp is a full six-week program. Because of the limit in group sizes, be sure to register early for this popular camp.

Space Camp for boys & girls, grades 4 - 8 This is hands-on, experiential science at its best! During US Space Camp, young astronauts participate in missions in our Space Flight Simulator and Mission Control Center. Each week of Space Camp has a different destination theme, and your child can participate in flights to the International Space Station on the Space Shuttle, or to the Moon and Mars on Orion, NASA’s newest spacecraft! The week begins with team-building exercises to improve communication and familiarity within the student groups or “crews.” In addition, throughout the week campers will build and launch model rockets, straw and soda bottle rockets, parachutes, and balsa gliders, all of which can be taken home. The campers will also be working with Lego Mindstorm kits to create programmable robotic rovers! The US Space Flight Simulator is a superb, one-of-a-kind facility ready to launch campers into an unforgettable space adventure. The Simulator is a full-sized, two-story replica of the mid and flight decks of the Space Shuttle that can be converted for historical or future NASA flights. It is attached to our International Space Station module where ‘in-flight” activities can take place. The Mission Control Center is located separately from the simulator, and each camper will perform the role of a Mission Control officer as well as an astronaut. Campers will conduct investigations much like those carried out by astronauts on the actual NASA Space Shuttle and International Space Station. Computer-controlled graphics are used to simulate space flight. Radio communication between Mission Control and spacecraft allows participants to fly real-time missions with NASA-inspired scripts. Our connection to NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland adds exciting features to our summer program including a weekly field trip to the Great Lakes Science Center’s NASA Glenn Visitors Center! Finally, campers will also have the opportunity to swim in our indoor pool several times during the week. Campers are grouped by age with a curriculum of hands-on activities to meet their developmental needs. A US faculty member with a passion for space education leads each “crew” group. Former campers and US students serve as junior counselors, typically making our ratio of campers to counselors 3:1. Enrollment is limited to 24 campers per session, so register early for this very popular camp! Extended Day options (before and after camp) and shuttle bus services are available. Campers bring their own bagged lunches and drinks. Refrigeration and mid-morning snack are provided.

ACT INTENSIVE PREP

Welcome to University School’s Academic Summer Courses! We encourage you to explore our many offerings available to students enrolled at University School and other area schools. We offer five-week academic classes in the Arts, Science, Humanities and Physical Education. Current US students have the opportunity to earn credit for classes in PE, Health, and the Arts, or accelerate their academic progress with summer biology, chemistry, physics, and Spanish. Our courses are taught by dedicated and experienced faculty in a supportive environment. The low instructor-student ratio promotes a classroom of collaboration and individual attention.

The ACT Intensive Preparation course focuses on the English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing sections of the ACT. The individual instruction approach provides feedback and practice for students to improve their ACT scores. There are many similarities between the SAT and the ACT, the most notable is that the ACT is often referred to as the “reading test” because of its focus on a student’s ability to synthesize various pieces of information to solve problems. We will review test-taking strategies and learn the architecture of the overall test and questions to mentally prepare for the exam. June 13 - 17 1:00 - 3:30 pm $300

June 20 - 24 9:00 - 11:30 am $300

July 11 - 15 9:00 - 11:30 am $300

SAT INTENSIVE PREP The SAT Intensive Preparation Course provides individuated instruction for students looking to increase their scores on the verbal, critical reading and writing sections of the SAT. Students will increase their vocabulary; practice reading comprehension in a timed environment; review the grammar and writing technique applicable to sentence error questions, improving sentences, and improving paragraphs; and practice timed-writing. We will review test-taking strategies and learn the architecture of the overall test and questions to mentally prepare for the exam. Students may sign up for one or both sessions. June 13 - 17 9:00 - 11:30 am $300

June 20 - 24 1:00 - 3:30 pm $300

Grades & Transcripts Students are given advisory ratings at the midpoint of the five-week session. Grades accompany the courses taken for credit. Students desiring transcripts forwarded to other schools should notify the director. Books & Supplies Many of the required materials are supplied without cost. Others are available on a cash basis. Beginner Golf Camp

Intermediate Golf Camp

for boys & girls, grades 4 - 8

for boys & girls, grades 6 - 12

This camp provides a comprehensive week of golf instruction for the beginner golfer. Led by University School teacher, coach, and former PGA Apprentice Brady Hurley, the camp will help golfers learn basic swing mechanics of driving, hitting from the fairway, pitching, chipping, sand shots, and putting. Also taught will be proper golf etiquette, rules of the game, and proper club selection.

Designed for confident players who are looking to take their golf game to the next level, participants will learn how to effectively strategize their golf game, including gaining the critical components of course management, mental approach, and proper practice techniques. Instruction will be given on the practice tee and at the putting green. Each afternoon is spent with on-course golf instruction.

A talented staff of high school coaches and golfers will join Coach Hurley each session. Campers will have golf-related warm-up time, unlimited use of the driving range, and five 9-hole rounds at Shawnee Hills Golf Course (short course). An instructor accompanies each foursome to reinforce proper swing mechanics, focus, and course etiquette. Camp fees include greens fees, driving range use, lesson guide, and daily prizes. Campers bring their own bagged lunch and drinks. Campers must provide their own transportation to and from the golf course. Register early as this camp is limited to 12 golfers.

Golfers will learn from situations that cannot be taught on the range or in a classroom. Because over 50% of this game is played inside of 100 yards, we devote half of the on-course time to improving short-game skills, putting, chipping, pitching, and bunker techniques. Led by University School teacher, coach, and former PGA Apprentice Brady Hurley, instruction will also be provided by experienced US coaching staff member Laura Pickwick. Campers bring their own bagged lunch and drinks and provide their own transportation to and from the golf course. Register early as enrollment is limited to 8 golfers.
