from the Director An amazing thing happened in the midst of a really hard year. While we stayed busy reinventing time-tested routines and correspondingly asking for flexibility from all corners, USN received philanthropic support beyond any expectations. This little volume tells that story, complete with lessons well worth taking to heart. The response to our appeal proved both broad and deep. Consider the number of donors, across decades and constituencies, then reflect on the types of gifts and the magnitude of the generosity directed our way — in the midst of so much uncertainty all around. The fact is that, with a foundational priority on public health, we started in remote mode, without a single student in a classroom, standing essentially alone among independent schools, in a divided city landscape. We postponed, rescheduled, modified, or of necessity cancelled altogether baskets of events that define life here at 2000 Edgehill, and still families combined to provide a record Annual Fund. As the year progressed, we brought programs back, one by one, buoyed by the success of our mitigation efforts and our collective commitment to do all we could while setting a standard for safety that would stand the test of time. We retrofitted classrooms, ramped up our Health Team capacity, invested deeply in technology, installed an entirely new air filtration system, and bought hundreds of gallons of hand sanitizer, thousands of masks. While our unity of purpose as a diverse and independent-minded aggregation of families wobbled early on, we stuck together. In the midst of all that, we benefited from endowment gifts that reminded us of the long-term nature of our potential as a school. Parents of our graduates, those graduates themselves (reaching well back into Peabody Demonstration School days), families, and especially significantly, the remarkably hard working faculty and staff — of whom so much was also being asked — combined to make it possible for us to do what those of us responsible for charting the path thought best. It would be hard to overestimate the difference all that giving and all that affirmation made to me, for us. And now we’re navigating phase two of the pandemic maze, vaccinated in enviable numbers, appreciative of that fact and of this community maybe more than ever, if that’s even possible. With the benefit of 22 years’ hindsight, excited about what the future holds for University School

after my grateful baton pass to a successor next July, let me say definitively that the spirit of generosity has moved mountains here. I’ve seen it, lived it, and had the honor to share the news for a good long while, in the company of the best people anywhere — Board members, colleagues, students, parents, lovers of education all. Financial Overview USN’s operating budget, like most independent schools, relies on revenue from tuition, our endowment contribution, the Annual Fund, and ancillary program income. Philanthropic support from our generous community helps us recruit and retain outstanding faculty, provide tuition assistance for students with demonstrated financial need, and invest in our programs and facilities. Alumnus Bob Rosenfeld '68 says his time at PDS was integral in making him a lifelong learner, someone always asking new questions, seeking new answers, and able to successfully navigate what he calls “an unusually varied career path” using the positive growth mindset and continued thirst for knowledge that resulted from his PDS years. “When Becky and I were updating our wills, including USN was a natural part of the decision-making process. Creating a bequest in our will allowed us to give back to the place that did so much for generations of my family.”

My life was so profoundly changed because my parents could send me to USN (Peabody Demonstration School) and Vandy (although the tuition was far, far lower way back then — $750 per year at Vandy). The George Peabody Society
N
amed in memory of the father of modern philanthropy whose education fund planted the seeds for University School of Nashville, the George Peabody Society recognizes our most loyal donors. These families — which include trustees, parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty, and friends of USN — have faithfully invested in the school every year for at least a quarter century with gifts of all sizes. Their commitment to USN inspires us all. The George Peabody Society more than quadrupled in the past eight years from 19 to 88 donors. Ten members in bold are new this year. The longest consecutive giving streak is 37 years, a milestone achieved by Weaver Barksdale, Samuel Dillard ‘56, and Allis Dale and John Gillmor. We’re pleased to share alumni are 48% of the society, and 66% are parents of alumni.

Artclectic shifted to online for 2020, raising over $25,000 for the Endowment for Innovative Teaching with buyers from across the country from Las Vegas to New York to Seattle Music Night raised over $8,000 for the River Campus and Arts Program with an all star line-up of performers Evening Classes raised over $15,000 for need-based scholarship endowment with classes held on Zoom from January to April and ended with a talk by civil rights icon Andrew Young Volunteers delivered goodies to the homes of all families new to USN MS Latin Teacher Richard Rosenthal and his son, Eric ‘15, organized a Zoom trivia night for the USN community Hosted ”How to Raise Anti-Racist Children,” a talk by Mona Ivey-Soto, Ph.D. during the summer of 2020 Hosted a book discussion on “So You Want to Talk about Race” with Middle School English Teacher Katie Sandidge and 30 participants, including faculty, staff, and parents Showed our immense gratitude to the faculty and staff at USN with treats to start the school year, pies at Thanksgiving, assorted goodies throughout the year, and lunch from food trucks to close out the end of the school year

Having Horizons students safely back on campus for the summer program felt like having our family back together. We are incredibly proud of the social, emotional, and academic growth our students made in just six weeks. Our students engaged in rich discussions centered around books, solidified tough math concepts, worked as a team within their classrooms to create culminating STEAM projects, and so much more. Now in our eighth summer, Horizons welcomed 117 students from 20 Metro Nashville Public Schools to our Edgehill campus. Our youngest rising first graders had a spectacular first summer focusing on reading comprehension and fluency, finding patterns and building numbers, and climbing the stairs to our rooftop garden to learn about plants and the environment. Similarly, students in grades 2 through 8 engaged in author studies and writing projects, created art projects and engineering structures, solidified math skills in multiplication, measurement, integers, and journeyed to Warner Parks. All 117 students spent 30 minutes a day in the pool learning to swim or mastering skills they learned in previous summers. Swimming is a key element of the Horizons program, and it builds confidence and resilience. Whether they were just getting comfortable in the shallow end, learning to dive and retrieve rings from the bottom of the pool, or swimming laps for time, Horizons students rose to the challenge in the water. Our oldest students, now rising ninth graders, opened their minds and hearts with some deep discussions that stemmed from a book study. Their discussions centered around how to have a collaborative mindset, social interactions and their responsibilities, the importance of decision making and the responsibility that comes with making your own decisions. They embraced these important conversations with fervor. As we look ahead to next summer, it is exciting to envision a high school program for these students who have been with us for eight years. Our Horizons students worked hard to grow academically and socially this summer. We’re proud and excited to see them take this growth into the school year and be leaders in their schools across Nashville. And we are hopeful that we can come together safely during the school year — it’s too long to wait until June 2022.

he PDS/USN community set a new Annual Fund benchmark, raising over $1.79 million to support the people and programs at 2000 Edgehill Ave. The Annual Fund is the foundation of philanthropy at USN, allowing our outstanding faculty to create a challenging, creative, and inclusive atmosphere for our students. Every year, collective giving provides critical resources for top priorities including academic programming, need-based financial aid, arts, athletics, and technology.

Matching gifts were a large part of the success of the Tiger Conversations Give Back Challenge. Over $94,000 in matching gifts was offered by 36 generous donors to inspire others to give. A well-received series of virtual Community Conversations were offered on several important topics. These conversations featured alumni and other community leaders and were moderated by USN faculty members. Recordings of the conversations can be viewed at usn.org/tigergiveback.

March 10, 2021 the Tiger Give Back Challenge set a new bar for USN’s single day of giving. In 24 hours, $266,783 was raised from 737 alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, grandparents, parents of alumni, and other supporters. The tremendous success of the day was due to the outreach by over 100 volunteers around the country. These volunteers called and texted thousands of members of the PDS/USN community and had countless conversations.

Our alumni challenge honored two recent retirees with odd classes on Team Blue, captained by beloved Coach Zaf Ahmed, and even classes on Team Garnet, captained by esteemed Director of College Counseling Janet Schneider. Team Garnet took the edge with 202 donors over Team Blue, which came in with 189 donors. The top alumni classes for participation in the challenge were: 2004, 2001, 2002, 1995, and 1985. Overall, our alumni made a big collective impact during the Tiger Give Back Challenge raising over $72,000 for USN.

ommunity is at the core of USN, and the pandemic has proven to us that we must manifest our alumni connections in new ways. Although we could not attend events in person, our more than 4,000 alumni from across the globe stayed connected through social media and virtual events such as Reunion, the All-Alumni Party, Artclectic Happy Hour, and the Tiger Give Back Challenge. Through Zoom, our Alumni Director Patti Wexler hosted 20 different class parties — with many PDS/USN alumni joining multiple sessions.
In a year when nearly every aspect of our daily lives was disrupted, our alumni showed up and gave back to support USN at near-record levels. It is with pride that we recognize more than 900 alumni who donated to the Annual Fund this year. For generations, these contributions have collectively created life-changing experiences for students, faculty, and staff. Thanks to your giving, this will never change and we are truly grateful. Your commitment, now and over time, to pay forward the special gift that USN has been for us to the students of USN today helps deliver on the mission of developing generations of future leaders. What’s happening at the River Campus?
If
you’ve been out to 1200 County Hospital Road for cross country, soccer, or tennis this fall, then you noticed a flurry of non-sports activity. Machines are digging trenches, moving dirt, pouring a foundation — a critical infrastructure project is underway to upgrade our second campus. As the new school year began, we broke ground on a sewer system for the River Campus. Along with the system installation, construction began on a multipurpose building — a Tiger Station — that will house bathrooms, team rooms, concessions, and storage space. In addition, the comfort station was taken offline for renovation and expansion. Project completion is estimated for early spring 2022, in time for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, and track athletes to enjoy the needed enhancements. After postponing the project in winter 2020, the Board of Trustees chose to move ahead now, thanks to a combination of philanthropic support and plant reserves.

An Invaluable Gift
D
irector of College Counseling Janet Schneider announced at the close of 2020 that the 20202021 school year would be her last at USN. Janet, the school’s longest-serving faculty member, joined Peabody Demonstration School in August 1974 and was its final remaining employee. She has worked as a personal counselor, earned her master’s degree and certification in counseling, and ushered thousands of students into their years beyond Edgehill as Director of College Counseling and Senior Class Dean. “Janet created a college counseling program that‘s one of our most respected and cherished school attributes. With more of an accent of the counseling element, the college component of her impressive work has helped launch so many promising young lives — in locations that are the envy of schools everywhere,” said Director Vince Durnan. “As impossible as it may be to imagine USN without Janet Schneider to nurture our culture and constituents, she‘s leaving us an invaluable gift ... the quality of the program she built.” An endowment fund, The Janet Carney Schneider College Counseling Endowment, was established in her honor by alumnus Greer McCurley ‘97 in 2014.
