To accomplish this, we support an outstanding faculty in every aspect of the living-learning atmosphere at APU. Our dedicated managers, staff and student staff provide services that are valuable and faith-based while also aiming to be efficient and cost-effective. We also exist to provide the means for our students to be successful in their academic journey by providing meals, course materials and other services that will enhance their experience and assist them to excel in their academic achievements. Being a part of this community for many years, the two of us have been privileged to hear stories from our students about how these services have supported them throughout college. UNIVERSITY SERVICES EXISTS TO SERVE. Whether behind the scenes orchestrating events and stocking the Bookstore or up front providing food and care-packages from home, we exist to serve the APU community with excellence, ease, and consistency.

To the Parents of Our Students Entrusting your child to a university is a large step of faith; after all, you’ve had eighteen years to love and care and grow your child into the man or woman walking onto our campus as a freshman. It can be scary! University Services wants to reassure you that they are in good hands. Being an advocate for your student, we work to bring affordable course materials, comfortable events, and nutritional food options throughout his or her time at Azusa Pacific. We know the time and sacrifice you have poured into his or her college education, and we desire to reciprocate your compassion and dedication in what we do.

To Faculty and Staff Navigating the many channels of communication at a university can be daunting and filled with headaches. The goal of this magazine, as well as the goal of this department, is to provide streamlined service to give you more time to plan for what really matters: your classes and your students! We believe every facet of our services should be streamlined. Whether booking rooms on 25Live, ordering from our catering menu, designing course packs, or obtaining an ID card, they should each be delivered with the excellence you expect and deserve. We are honored to work alongside you in furthering APU’s God First mission.

To Everyone In these pages contain the faces behind our services, giving you a glimpse into the lives and hearts that serve our wonderful students. May we glorify God in our excellence and serve you with joy and consistency.

SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS At the risk of being cliché, our office is like an escalator. No one ever says, “Wow, that’s a great escalator,” but everyone notices if an escalator is gone or isn’t working. We want to be the dependable escalator to our students: convenient and easy to use in getting them where they need to go. We consist of the behind-the-scenes people working hard to make sure our students are supported in their unique journey through college. Whether it’s employing over 700 students or simply serving them from the other side of the counter, we want to help cultivate an environment in which distractions are minimized in order to bring Christ, classes, and friendships to the forefront.

A Heart for the Customers

I have always loved the metaphor of our lives telling a story. Each chapter shapes and molds us for the next one and, upon reflection, allows us to see how God has weaved his plan throughout each chapter.

For me, college was one of those life-altering chapters. I came to APU eighteen years ago with a heart for people and a desire to help them through my studies in psychology. Little did I know then how

On a daily basis I experience our staff ’s heart and passion for the work they do along with their desire to serve our customers.

God would use my on-campus job at the University Bookstore to transform my career into one of service to college students and to the APU community. My plan was never to continue my “little” college job in the bookstore after graduate school; however, I loved buying the clothing at the bookstore and working with our student employees.

For these reasons, I decided to stay at the bookstore, and, looking back, the privilege of being able to work alongside our student employees as they walk through their own chapters has been the highlight of my career. I now oversee Campus Auxiliaries--Azusa Print + Design, Mail Services, One Card Office, and the University Bookstore--and have greatly enjoyed getting to know everyone who walks through my office door. I have been lucky enough to have students and staff who feel that my office is a place they can come and share, so it has seen its

share of laughter, tears, fears and all the emotions that come with the journey through college.

The entire Campus Auxiliaries staff is privileged to teach student employees lifelong professional skills that will transfer into whatever field they will enter into upon graduation (maybe even--like my case-our own!). On a daily basis I experience our staff’s heart and passion for the work they do along with their desire to serve our customers. Whether it be our bookstore staff working to find the most affordable course material options, Azusa Print + Design staff assisting students with printing their projects or Mail Services giving a student that much-needed care package from home, we truly want to serve with a heart for our customers.

I am incredibly grateful to have applied for a job in Campus Auxiliaries in college, opening a chapter that God has faithfully written for the past eighteen years. Thank you for letting me serve you.

Whether it be our bookstore staff working to find the most affordable course material options, Azusa Print + Design staff assisting students with their projects or Mail Services giving a student that much-needed care package from home, we truly want to serve with a heart for our customers.

Often parents’ lifeline into the world of their student is the post-office. Care-packages, emergency contact solution, and letters pass back and forth, and the student and parents need an on-campus post office dedicated to keeping communication open and active. University Mail Services has two locations, one on East Campus and one on West Campus, both acting as fully-functioning Post Offices.

Both locations handle internal and external mail and shipping, and they even offer a discounted shipping rate to students, faculty, and staff. Our partnership with Amazon Lockers offers another easy pick-up solution. With a convenient location on both East and West Campus, you can now easily ship your Amazon packages to campus and pick them up whenever you’d like!

AZUSA PRINT + DESIGN Azusa Print + Design was constructed to be a place to give students opportunities to create tangible materials that served the APU community—preparing our students for careers in graphic design and production. We still serve the same purpose, now with greater breadth and depth to our client base in a new, larger location. With a more spacious and convenient storefront, we offer quality services to our campus and local community. Furthermore, Azusa Print + Design is making printing easier and more streamlined by creating a web-to-print service. Soon you will be able to design and order posters and postcards from the convenience of your own computer, and we will take it from there! Parents, want to send your students a poster or banner for their birthday? Order it online or call the store and they can make it. All you need to do is have one of their friends pick it up and sneak it into their dorm room or apartment (this may or may not have been done before)! AZUSA PRINT + DESIGN | 10

Beyond Basic Sustenance

The goal of my life is Christian service, and my passion is serving those around me. I was lead to pursue undergraduate studies at Eastern Nazarene College in Boston, followed by attendance and graduation from Point Loma Nazarene College in San Diego. It was the influence of Christian colleges and Christian friends at these colleges that laid the foundation that helped me become the man I am today.

It is a clear calling to serve the APU community that brings me to this point in my professional and spiritual journey.

My professional life since graduating from Point Loma was and remains a life of service: service to my country through a 23 year career in hospitality services as an officer in the United States Air Force and service in higher education for eight years as Associate Director of Dining at Cornell University and now at APU. On a more personal (and more important) level, life since college graduation has been a life of service motivated by obedience to Christ. I’ve been privileged to live and serve in various capacities around the world-including mission trips to Argentina and Uganda. It is a clear calling to serve the APU community that brings me to this point in my professional and spiritual journey.

Higher Education Food Service--and my vision for this department-is about so much more than providing basic sustenance. It is about providing quality food while educating students on healthy eating through working with Menus of Change (more on that in the next section). It is about introducing and educating our community to other cultures through authentic engagement with new flavors and cuisines. It’s about partnering with the Dining Services Dietitian to understand what’s in the food we’re eating so we make wise

Most importantly, however, Dining Services at APU is about building relationships over a good meal shared with friends and colleagues.

choices about what we consume. It’s about making customers with food allergies feel safe eating in APU Dining Facilities. It’s about a professional student staff and providing life skills to our student employees to use both at APU and beyond.

Most importantly, however, Dining Services at APU is about building relationships over a good meal shared with friends and colleagues. I am honored to serve this community and work to create more community through the meals we share.

The Intersection of

FOOD AND EXPERIENCE The experience around food is impossible to ignore throughout the scriptures. God provided manna for the Israelites in their journeys through the dessert, and it was around a table that Jesus initiated the Lord’s supper. John reclined at the table with Jesus, and we will someday sit at the great banquet table in heaven. There seems to be an intersectionality of food and experience throughout the Bible. One leads to the other and vice versa. This is our desire in Dining Services. We want the food students eat and the tables students eat at to play prominent roles in their holistic development while at APU. We want new freshmen to laugh as they eat in our 1899 Dining Hall, and we want new friends to spend long lunches on West over Sam’s Subs. To accomplish this goal, we work hard to guarantee quality and convenience in a student’s

dining experience throughout their tenure at APU. We are relentlessly pursuing healthy and flavorful foods that will give our students the energy needed to thrive academically and socially.

A Commitment to Menus of Change APU is committed to providing students with food that promotes health and wellness, and, alongside our campus dietitian, we are actively pursuing new options for further betterment. Recently, our efforts have been bolstered by the Menus of Change program. Lead by The Culinary Institute of America and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Menus of Change aims to shift what campuses serve toward healthier and more sustainable options. APU is proud to participate in this program to pursue food options that shift “center of plate” (the anchor of our diets)

to healthier and less processed foods. Last year our focus was to cut back on the amounts of sodium in our recipes. This year our goal is to take an even closer look at all our recipes to determine additional ways to make meals more nutritious and allergy friendly. This looks like serving more grains on our menus as well as cutting back on portion sizes for our desserts (no one needs a piece of cake as large as their face!). Teaching students about healthy eating practices shouldn’t begin after they graduate, and we want to pursue this opportunity to equip our students to lead healthy and active lifestyles.

Partner with We want the food students eat and the tables students eat at to play prominent roles in their holistic development while at APU.

UNIVERSITY CATERING

Recently, we’ve conducted interviews with departments around campus to see how we can best utilize our catering menu to serve APU’s community. We are excited to introduce greater flexibility into our ordering options. The new online catering menu earned gold in the National Association of College and University Food Services’ (NACUFS) Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards. We want to partner with you in creating catering services that is easy to use and fits your budget. This means offering greater flexibility and options which allows you to shape what you want around your context and your budget. Want to compose your own salad? Great, we can help you with that! Don’t feel the need for full coffee service for your lunch meeting? Fine with us! Let us know how we can help, and stay tuned as we continue to improve our catering services!

EVENT SERVICES

Leading with Servanthood and Hospitality My name is Tim Long, and I am the Director of Event Services, tasked with overseeing all event-related activities, summer conferences and campus vending services. I joined APU’s staff in January of 2017 after leaving Fairplex in Pomona where I worked for over 5 years as an Event Manager. In 2006, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations from California State University, Fullerton. I bring 15 plus years of experience in the event industry--both in the public

...coming to APU fulfilled a dream ten years in the making... I can now invest in my staff and student employees regarding work and faith with the assurance of God’s plans.

and private sectors. My experience includes working at a well-known Southern California convention center as an Operations Manager, owning my own event consulting business, speaking as a guest lecturer at Cal Poly Pomona, and most recently, working for the LA County Fair Association as a year-round Event Manager and FairTime Admissions and Carnival Manager.

With this experience preparing me, coming to APU fulfilled a dream ten years in the making. In college I realized I wanted to plan and run events for churches and Christian companies, and my experience in the private and public sectors has afforded me the experience necessary to serve the APU community with excellence. I can now invest in my staff and student employees regarding work and faith with the assurance of God’s plans.

15 | LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I am honored to lead Events Services and In my time working the events industry, I’ve developed a love for the adaptability necessary to do this job well. If someone goes into events wanting a nine-to-five/Monday-to-Friday job, they will quickly lose steam and need to find a new line of work. Each day’s work looks different, especially at APU. On Monday I may be overseeing a Nursing conference in Felix Event Center and have to spend late-night hours turning it over for Chapel the next day. Within this adaptability, my goal is to work in such a way that APU students and

guests can enjoy events without feeling distracted by their physical surroundings. We exist to make your events run smoothly!

With six full-time employees and over fifty student employees, I am honored to lead Events Services and run events which exemplify creativity, grace, integrity, leadership, customer service, servanthood and hospitality.

Thank you for working with us to make APU a community of excellence and love.

SERVING BEHIND THE SCENES

There’s a Christian camp in Colorado that has high school volunteers sweep the pebbles off the sidewalks each morning before any campers get up. When the camp director was asked why he makes them do this, he said, “I don’t want a camper to miss out on hearing about Jesus because he was too busy trying to pick a pebble out of his shoe.”

We work to make sure event attendees are able to be fully present by handling the logistics. Event Services is that camp. We work to make sure event attendees are able to be fully present by handling the logistics—from working to give our customers the best technology possible, setting up our new inventory of tables, or making sure every chair is sound (seriously, we check). We don’t want a student to miss the incredible message of Jesus in chapel because his or her chair is broken, so we strive to serve our community with excellence in everything we do.

17 | EVENT SERVICES

Whether it is a one-hour meeting or a multi-day conference, a single room reservation or a Felix Event Center service, we will bring the same commitment to excellence within each setting. For parents, you may not work directly with us, but we want you to see the fingerprints of excellence throughout your time at APU. To faculty and staff, we aim to have quick response times and easy booking experiences; let us know how we can help you create the event you desire. APU is proud to utilize University Tickets for all ticketed events. It is easier than ever before to purchase tickets for any event on our robust and diverse platform. Check it out at tickets.apu.edu, and buy your tickets to our next play or sporting event! When we do our job correctly, we will be the volunteers sweeping the pebbles off the sidewalk: working hard behind the scenes to ensure your event— whether it be a department meeting or week-long summer conference—will run smoothly. Please let us know how we can best serve you and your event.

We strive to serve our community with excellence in everything we do. EVENT SERVICES | 18

GIVING BACK Our mission is to honor God by providing students, faculty, staff and administration with the goods and services they need to accomplish their academic and departmental goals, while maintaining good stewardship of the University’s resources. A substantial way we do this is by giving back to the university in several ways. This includes providing scholarships for textbooks, employment opportunities for students and being excellent stewards of God’s creation through sustainable practices. On a much larger scale, we contribute our revenue back to the University to assist in the mission of providing affordable education.

Non-Profit University Services operates not as an enterprise but as a service unit, which means the revenue we earn goes directly back to the university. We take great pride in supporting the success of our students, faculty, staff, and university as a whole.

19 | GIVING BACK

While being service based, we also see the importance in operating with sound business principles and practices. This ensures that each department provides excellent service while maintaining financial stability. With this mission in mind, our departments are operated and managed by APU staff, not by a third party contractor. This allows us to serve the community with flexibility while providing lower costs, new services each year and supporting the vision of APU.

Student Employment We are the largest employer of students on campus, with over 700 jobs being provided annually. From cooking on the line and event set-up, to customer service and business support positions, our student employees gain valuable workplace experience while pursuing their educational goals. With that many students walking through our doors every year, we have the great opportunity of walking alongside them in their journey and supporting their holistic success while at APU.

Textbook Scholarship In addition to looking for every opportunity to reduce the cost of course materials, the University Bookstore provides $4,000 in textbook scholarships every year to deserving students, helping to alleviate a portion of the cost in attending college. Additionally, we partner with athletics during football season and Midnight Madness to give students the opportunity to win scholarships for a semester.

Sustainability As a part of the University Services’ mission, stewardship plays a vital role in how we operate and how we serve. The need to be responsible with God’s creation is an important call to be his disciples, especially in California where resources are shrinking. To be proactive, each department in University Services is committed to sustainability in their operational practices. This can be seen in the 1899 Dining Hall with lack of trays, which leads to less water usage and

food waste. It moves further with our chefs using left over materials to create a compost pile that is then used by the grounds crew as fertilizer for landscaping on campus. University Services, along with all of APU, recycled over 83 tons of cardboard, paper, bottles and cans in the 2017/18 school year. We also engage in sustainable practices through our partnership with vendors. From sourcing materials from local producers and fair trade companies to purchasing graduation gowns made from recycled bottles, we are playing our part in lowering the carbon footprint of the university.

University Services operates not as an enterprise but as a service unit, which means the revenue we earn goes directly back to the university.
