Die Firma Kraus wurde 1957 als ‘Gebrüder Kraus OHG - Glasmanufaktur’ in Haidershofen - Ramingdorf von Walter und Arthur Kraus gegründet. Es wurde von etwa 60 Mitarbeitern ausschließlich handgeschliffener Kristallbehang erzeugt. 1961 fiel die komplette Schleiferei einem Werkstättenbrand zum Opfer. In weiterer Folge wurde die Firma an ihrem derzeitigen Standort in Haidershofen - Dorf/Enns neu errichtet. Hier begann man 1968 mit der Erzeugung von Kristalllustern. Aufgrund der steigenden Nachfrage nach kompletten Leuchten wurde der Leuchtenbau immer mehr ausgeweitet. Der Handschliff bekam durch den STRASS® Swarovski® Crystal Konkurrenz. Die Schleiferei wurde sukzessive verkleinert, der Leuchtenbau nahm an Bedeutung zu und ist heute alleiniger Schwerpunkt der Firmentätigkeit.

Nach dem Tod des Firmengründers Walter Kraus im Jahre 1984 wurde die Firma ‘Gebrüder Kraus OHG’ in eine Ges.m.b.H & Co. KG umgewandelt. Die Geschäftsleitung befindet sich seither in Händen von Maria Kraus, der Frau des Firmengründers sowie ihrer Tochter Margot und deren Mann Walter Hildner. Mit Juli 2001 wurde die Firma Kraus KG gegründet, die von Margot und Walter Hildner sowie deren Sohn Markus, der als Geschäftsführer fungiert, geleitet wird.

Das derzeitige Standardprogramm umfasst zirka vierhundert verschiedene Modelle, vom klassischen Kristallluster bis hin zu modernen Designs, die sowohl im Wohnraum- als auch im Objektbereich einsetzbar sind. Qualitätskontrolle ist ein wesentlicher Faktor unserer Produktion. Jedes Modell wird einer eingehenden Prüfung unterzogen. Materialien, Oberflächen, Verarbeitung und die elektrische Funktion werden streng kontrolliert bevor ein Produkt zur Auslieferung gelangt. Es werden laufend neue Modelle entwickelt, die teilweise auch durch die Zusammenarbeit mit den Kunden und deren Architekten entstehen, wobei der Einsatz der CAD-Planung eine wertvolle Hilfe ist. Unsere hochwertigen Produkte sind nicht nur auf dem österreichischen Markt erfolgreich, wir konnten auch auf internationalen Märkten reüssieren, die für uns mehr und mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen.

history

The company was founded by Walter and Arthur Kraus in 1957 as ‘Gebrüder Kraus OHG - Glass manufacture’ in Haidershofen - Ramingdorf. 60 employees worked exclusively on the production of hand-cut crystal trimmings. In 1961 the handcutting workshop burned down and following this the company was rebuilt newly in Haidershofen - Dorf/ Enns, where in 1968 the production of crystal chandeliers started. Due to increasing demand for complete crystal chandeliers the production of light fixtures was extended.

From the beginning quality control was very important. Each model is checked and tested regarding materials of construction, quality of finish and electrical function before leaving the factory. We create new designs which quite often result from collaboration between the clients, their architect and ourselves. Our use of CAD planning is a great help in the circulation of ideas. Our high-quality products can be found in both the domestic and international markets. The latter business is a fast increasing segment of our overall sales.

In the following years competition from STRASS® Swarovski® Crystal increased and glass cutting has been correspondingly reduced. The manufacturing of lighting fixtures grew steadily and today it is the sole business of the company. Walter Kraus, the founder of the company, died in 1984 and a new company, Kraus Gesm.b.H & Co. KG was formed, managed by Maria Kraus, the wife of the founder, her daughter Margot and her husband Walter Hildner. In July 2001 Kraus KG was established and Markus Hildner became managing director.

To protect the metal surfaces against corrosion they are lacquered and stove enamelled after appropriate treatment (galvanic or patinated).

Maria - Theresia - Chandelier Maria - Theresia - Luster Around 1680 in Italy, France and Spain the metal frame of the chandelier was first decorated with fragments of rock crystal. These were usually the scraps left over when carving bowls and basins. The shapes of these trimmings, which were cut by a stone cutter, are virtually the same today and constitute the classical chandelier trimming. Since there was not enough rock crystal available to meet the large demand for it, glass soon became the alternative material. In France, at the court of Versailles, the cast bronze frames were decorated with large pendants and the various shapes and cuts, which were created at that time, form the design basis for the crystal trimmings of today. Austria adopted the French styles but the frames were made of wrought iron, the candle holders were of sheet metal and the trimmings were in the shapes of droplets, tear drops, prisms and so on. During the reign of Empress Maria Theresia the wrought iron arms were covered with glass rails fixed with thin wire and so the Viennese Chandelier was born, carrying the name of the Empress from then on.

In Austria it is considered to be the classical chandelier. It has survived various, sometimes very different, fashions and is still in use for almost all prestige applications, It’s style even blending successfully with current architectural forms.

Um 1680 wurden in Italien, Frankreich und Spanien für aufwändige Metallgestelle reiche Behänge und Mittelkonsolen aus Bergkristall angefertigt. Man verarbeitete hauptsächlich die beim Schneiden von Bergkristallgefäßen abfallenden Teile. Die Steinschneider schliffen Kristall zu fast all den Formen, die bis heute den klassischen Lusterbehang bilden. Da Bergkristall bald nicht mehr im Ausmaß der stark steigenden Nachfrage zur Verfügung stand, wählte man Glas als Alternative. In Frankreich wurden für den Hof in Versailles die aus Bronze gegossenen Gestelle vergoldet und mit großen Pendeloques versehen. Im Laufe der Zeit entwickelten sich daraus diverse Schliffformen, die zu den Vorläufern der heutigen Behangelemente zählen. In Österreich wurden die französischen Lusterformen übernommen, allerdings waren hier die Gestelle aus Schmiedeeisen. Sie erhielten Tropftassen aus Blech und einen Behang in Form von Tropfen, Pendeln, Wachteln und Trapezrauten. Zur Zeit Maria Theresias wurden an den Breitseiten der geschmiedeten Eisenarme Glasleisten mit dünnem Draht befestigt. Der „Wiener Luster“, der von nun an den Namen der Kaiserin trug, war entstanden. Er gilt in Österreich als der klassische Luster und hat in verschiedenen Varianten stark unterschiedliche Stilrichtungen überlebt. Er wurde als Repräsentationsleuchte in vielen architektonischen Bereichen eingesetzt und in zunehmendem Maße mit aktuellen Architekturformen kombiniert.

For cost reasons, glass replaced the more expensive brass at the beginning of the 18th Century. Moulded, solid or hollow glass arms (plain or cut) were fused in position around a central glass column. The assembly was then completed by fusing candle sockets and bobeches onto the arms.

Glas ersetzte um 1700 zunächst aus Kostengründen das teure Messing bei der Lusterfertigung. Um eine gläserne Mittelkolonne wurden die gebogenen, massiven oder hohlen, glatten oder geschliffenen Arme aus Glas, auf die Tassen und Tüllen aufgeschmolzen waren, angeordnet.

Slightly modified, glass arm chandeliers are still produced today because the flexibility of the design means that they can easily be combined with different interiors.

Mit geringfügigen Änderungen werden Glasarmluster bis heute gefertigt, da sie nichts an Attraktivität eingebüßt haben und mit den unterschiedlichsten Einrichtungsstilen kombiniert werden können.

However, there is a limit to the size of the chandelier, due to tensions set up in the glass, which cannot always be adequately controlled.

Einschränkungen gebietet ausschließlich das Material, da ausladende Arme nur begrenzt belastbar und im Glas vorhandene Spannungen nicht vermeidbar sind.

Empire - Luster Empire - Chandelier

The Jeweller of Lighting

The basic shape is the so-called ‘Louis seize’ type (design). A pear shaped metal frame is decorated with crystal strings, running from the top to the central ring. The Empire design complimented the Louis Seize style, incorporating as it did decorative elements representing the Napoleonic era, such as Lilies, Laurel and Palmettes, while the baskets were made of fire-gilded bronze.

Aus dem Frankreich des „Louis seize“ stammt die Ausgangsform. Über einem birnenförmigen Metallgestell mit einer Mittelstange führten reiche Ketten von einer Krone zu den einzelnen Armen. Das Empire reicherte die „Louis seize“-Formen dem (napoleonischen) Zeitgeist entsprechend mit Lilien, Lorbeer und Palmetten an und fertigte die Körbe aus feuervergoldeter Bronze.

Later the basket shape of the bottom section was achieved by using crystal strings running from the central ring to the center of the „basket“. The trimmings in this design are generally smaller than in other chandeliers.

Später bildeten korbförmig angeordnete Ketten den Unterteil. Beim Behang fanden die eher kleinen Formen Verwendung.

Of course, during almost 2 centuries of use, the original basic shape has been modified. However, the overall design became and remains classical which promote its use in various kinds of interiors.

Vielfältig wurde die Grundform im Laufe der Zeit abgewandelt. Die Ausführung konnte so dem jeweiligen Geschmack angepasst werden. Zweifellos lässt sich diese Art von Lustern harmonisch mit den verschiedenen Stilen verbinden und gibt etwa schnörkelloser moderner Einrichtung Charakter.

Crystal - Chandeliers Kristallluster During the course of it’s history, various classical designs of chandeliers have been developed, most of which are still in use today. For example, there is the ‘wheel’ and hoop chandelier design, the Flemish, the shell decorated chandelier, the Crystal and the Empire style. The common design was sought to increase the reflective power of candle light by using high gloss metal or cut glass, and by taking into account the characteristic image of the candle flame. The development of the gas burner, the incandescent lamp and, in particular, the invention of the electric light bulb, opened up new horizons in the design and production of chandeliers. As also did the use of new materials and the rapid development of new technologies for use in the manufacturing and finishing processes. The chandelier, until this time mainly to be mainly found in the homes ancestral homes of the aristocracy and the clergy, in the 19th century became part of the furnishing of middle class homes.

Our product range mainly comprises glass and crystal lighting, providing for a wide variety of standard applications, while also satisfying the special needs of individual clients.

Im Laufe der Stilgeschichte haben sich im Lusterbau Grundtypen herausgebildet, die bis heute verwendet werden, wie etwa der Rad- und der Reifenluster, der Flämische Luster, der Luster mit Rokaillen, der Glasarm-, der Kristall- und der Empireluster. Allen gemeinsam war, dass sie Kerzenlicht möglichst dekorativ durch hochglänzendes Metall oder geschliffenes Glas verstärken sollten, wobei die Eigenarten der Kerzenflamme in der Konstruktion berücksichtigt werden mussten. Erst die Entwicklung des Gasbrenners, des Gasglühstrumpfes und vor allem die Erfindung der elektrischen Glühlampe eröffneten dem Leuchtenbau neue Dimensionen, ebenso wie neue Materialien und eine rasante Entwicklung neuer Verfahren in der Ver- und Bearbeitung. Der Luster, der bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt hauptsächlich in Repräsentativbauten des Adels und der Kirche verwendet worden war, fand Eingang in die bürgerliche Welt des Alltags. Unsere Produktion befasst sich vor allem mit Glasund Kristallleuchten für alle Anwendungsbereiche, wobei wir flexibel auf Kundenwünsche reagieren.

Gegensätzliches, Widersprüchliches hat mich immer schon beschäftigt und herausgefordert, ob als rebellischer Jugendlicher, als Architekturstudent, Fotograf oder als Designer. Gut 10 Jahre lang hatte ich für eine renommierte Wiener Leuchtenfirma Leuchten entworfen. Da wurde ich immer wieder mit Kristalllustern, die ebenfalls zum Lieferprogramm gehörten, konfrontiert. Diese hatten aber nie einen Platz in meiner Gestaltungswelt, das waren Relikte einer

längst vergangenen Zeit, mit denen ich nichts anzufangen wusste und zu denen ich keine Beziehung aufbauen konnte. Trotzdem begann ich Überlegungen anzustellen, wie könnte man Kristallelemente verwenden, dass daraus was Neues, Ungewöhnliches entsteht. Es begann mit ungewöhnlichen Materialkombinationen und entwickelte sich weiter zu einfachen, klaren Formen, mit Kristallelementen als Gegenpol.

Nevertheless I started thinking about ways of using crystal elements for something new, something special. It all began with unusual combinations of materials and evolved into simple, clear designs with crystal elements as antipole.

I have always been interested in and challenged by opposition and inconsistence, whether as a rebellious teenager, a student of architecture, photographer or designer. I have been designing lamps for a Viennabased lamp company for almost 10 years. During my work I was confronted with crystal chandeliers at a regular basis as these were part of the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s product range. But for a long

Um diesen Gegensatz noch etwas spannender zu machen, bekamen die Kristallelemente auch noch die Rolle des progressiven Elementes, des Unruhestifters zugeordnet. Koppen wurden zu meterlangen Bändern bzw. Schnüren aneinandergereiht und einfach, ungeordnet, fast anarchisch um Lampenschirme aus Stoff oder Glas gewickelt, frech und selbstbewusst schauten sie hinter strengen Metallteilen oder aus Ausstanzungen hervor, so als würden sie sich um

keine Regeln oder gar Traditionen kümmern und schon gar nicht um Geometrie, nur um die Botschaft zu vermitteln, wir sind alt genug um zu machen was wir wollen, aber wir zerstreuen dennoch das harte Glühlampen- oder Halogenlicht und zerlegen es für Euch in ein schillerndes Spektrum von Millionen Farben. So entstanden im Laufe vieler Jahre unzählige Ideen, Entwürfe und doch wurde kurioserweise die älteste Idee als allererste realisiert.

This is how countless ideas and designs have emerged over the years - and yet surprisingly the oldest idea was realized first of all.

In order to make this antipole even more fascinating we used crystal details as progressive elements “disturbing” the clear design. Octagons were lined up in meter-long ribbons and cords, simply, inordinately, almost archaically wrapped around lamp shades made of cloth or glass, peeping out from behind metal parts or cuttings as if they did not pay attention to rules and traditions or even geometry,

The designer Annette Hinterwirth, born in Linz, Upper Austria in 1967, is designing a series of wall decorations. She gathered her inspiration for this from works originating during the period from the 40s to the 60s and from artists such as Sciaparelli, Trifari and Dior. Pacific Burton is a homage to the love between Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. More than 1,000 STRASS® Swarovski® Crystals are brought to life by LED and generate interesting light effects. Diameter 95 cm, depth 16 cm.

The designer Tord Boontje, born 1968 in Entschede, Netherlands, says of his creation: â&#x20AC;&#x17E;Blossom is a reinterpretation of the classical chandelier. The poetic outward appearance of a sparkling, frozen arm is craftsmanship of the highest calibre. The construction is based on a mix of traditional skills and the use of new technologies such as LED light. For me, Kraus is an ideal partner for realisation of this combination.â&#x20AC;&#x153;

Sky is a monumental ceiling light designed for Swarovski in 2004 by the designer Matali Crasset, born 1965 in Chalons-en-Champagne, France. â&#x20AC;&#x17E; I wanted to play with the idea of turning the inside towards the outside. A piece of sky for at home. Like a dream of light. I am also interested in how 2D becomes 3D. The sky is made of pieces of acrylate in which the edges of the clouds appear thanks to a chain of crystals. Different cuts provide movement.â&#x20AC;&#x153;

Ein Stück Himmel für zu Hause. Wie ein Traum aus Licht. Mich interessierte es auch, wie aus 2D 3D wird. Der Himmel ist aus Acryl-Stücken, in denen dank einer Kette von Kristallen die Kanten der Wolken erscheinen. Verschiedene Schliffe sorgen für Bewegung.“

Positioned between fine art and design, his work aims to provoke dialouge, participation and interaction. He creates objects that are minimal, utilitarian and almost mundane yet full of a vitality one might not expect.

Technische Details Alle von uns produzierten Leuchten entsprechen den gültigen europäischen (ENEC) und österreichischen (ÖVE) Normen und werden vor Auslieferung eingehend geprüft. Standardmäßig werden alle Leuchten mit Metallfassungen (Keramikeinsatz) vom Typ E14 bzw. E27 ausgestattet, mit Ausnahme der Kerzenfassungen, die aus Kunstoff gefertigt sind. Selbstverständlich können wir die Leuchten auch mit Materialien gemäß den Vorschriften anderer Länder ausrüsten. Bei den verwendeten Metallen handelt es sich - je nach Modell - meist um Messing bzw. Stahl, die gemäß gewünschter Oberfläche galvanisiert bzw. patiniert und einbrennlackiert werden, um einen optimalen Korrosionsschutz zu gewährleisten. Für die Konstruktion notwendige, nicht sichtbare Teile werden verzinkt bzw. pulverbeschichtet, um auch hier einen Schutz gegen Korrosion zu garantieren.

Wir bieten zu jedem unserer Modelle Wand- Bodenund Tischleuchten an, wobei jeweils individuelle Lösungen möglich sind. Ein wesentlicher Faktor ist die sorgfältige Verpackung der Leuchten bzw. Leuchtenteile. Für Lieferungen ins Ausland werden spezielle Kartons oder Holzkisten verwendet. Für den Zusammenbau vor Ort werden selbstverständlich entsprechende Montageanleitungen beigepackt. Durch sorgfältige Dokumentation der ausgelieferten Aufträge können wir auch nach Jahren noch eventuell benötigte Ersatzteile liefern. Unsere langjährige Erfahrung mit Kristalllustern und Leuchten aller Art kommt uns bei der Renovierung bzw. Reinigung älterer Kristalleuchten (oftmals antike Kunstgegenstände) zugute. Änderungen des Designs und der technischen Ausführung behalten wir uns vor.

Technical Details All products manufactured are wired according to the european (ENEC) and to the austrian (Ă&#x2013;VE) standards and are tested prior to delivery. Metal socket holders (with ceramic insert) of the types E14 and E27 are standardized, exept for candle socket holders, which are made of an artificial material. Chandeliers can also be equipped with other approved materials and manufactured in accordance with alternative international standards. The materials mostly used are brass and steel with galvanic or patinated finish and protective coating which guarantees optimum protection against corrosion. The non visible parts of the construction are corrosion-resistant zinc plated or powder coated. Each of our models can be supplied with matching wall, floor and table lamps; as well as special solutions, according to the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs.
