Witnessing the joyful camaraderie of our UK guests aboard our ships has been a heart-warming and delightful experience, one I was lucky enough to experience as I headed to Venice to enjoy an 8 day sailing aboard the beautiful S.S. La Venezia. These past twelve months we have been recognised and voted as the best in the river cruise industry, not just in the luxury sector but overall against the giants in the industry. In 2022, our parent company, The Travel Corporation, became the first global tour operator to have all three near-term (2030), longterm and net zero (2050) targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

CONTINUING TO REMOVE SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

HOW WE’RE CUTTING OUR FOOD WASTE ONBOARD OUR SHIPS

For many years, Uniworld has lead the way in removing single use plastics from our ships. We were the first river cruise line to begin this process, with many others following our lead. We don't see sustainability as a marketing tool, we genuinely care about the environment and ensure we do all we can to cut down the use of plastics where possible, from every office around the world to every cabin on our ships. Our latest innovation we implemented in 2023 was the use of bamboo key cards, which saved us from using the usual plastic versions.

We're turning the tide against food wastage. In our collaboration with Leanpath, a pioneer in food waste management, we aim to perfect the art of crafting just-right portions. With 25,000kgs of waste already prevented across 11 ships, the scales are tilting in favour of a greener future.

A standout moment was our visit to the famous Old Cataract Hotel, known for inspiring Agatha Christie’s “Death on the Nile.” Here, guests were immersed in a world of historic charm and literary elegance while savouring a delightful afternoon tea, adding a touch of refinement to our journey. This blend of exclusive access, literary allure, and historical richness made our cruise a unique and unforgettable adventure.

Our explorations took us through the bustling streets and into the Egyptian Museum, where the vibrant history of the pharaohs unfolded before us through stunning artifacts and the timeless gaze of royal mummies. Cairo’s pulsating energy led us through markets teeming with colourful crafts, aromatic spices, and the harmonious chaos typical of vibrant city life. The exploration of ancient pyramids on the city’s outskirts was a surreal journey back in time, allowing us to witness the grandeur of ancient civilizations and ponder the mysteries of the past.

Discovering the Douro River Valley Dawn Quinn, part of the Uniworld team for four years I’ve been very lucky to be able to sail on a number of river cruises, but this is my favourite! Porto is such a beautiful city and where we dock in Gaia you overlook the Don Louis bridge and get to see all of the famous port houses. My favourite excursion is going to a family run winery where you get to experience how port is made before enjoying an amazing lunch in the wine cellar surrounded by large oak barrels. I took the family for our holiday last year and would thoroughly recommend this sailing!

Exploring Brilliant Bordeaux Elliot Cozens, part of the Uniworld team for four years My first Uniworld cruise experience was truly exceptional, from start to finish. The culinary options were a highlight of the trip, with some of the finest French cuisine I have ever enjoyed. The daily rotation of local Bordeaux wines, some from vineyards we cruised passed earlier in the day, were also a real treat. The onshore experiences were equally amazing, from the historic landmarks and charming villages to the wine tastings at prestigious wineries. However, what really set this trip apart was the exceptional service provided by the staff. Their commitment to ensuring that every guest's needs are met, with no detail too small and no request too large, truly made us feel like VIPs. Our early morning visit to experience the Taj Mahal at sunrise was truly spectacular, we even had private golf buggies waiting outside our hotel to transport us to and from the landmark! We spent five nights in the Golden Triangle staying in the best hotels I’ve ever seen, if you ever get a chance to stay at one of India’s Oberoi hotels, take it! They are truly in a world of their own when it comes to luxurious amenities.

Another exemplar moment was our evening visit to the famed St Mark’s Basilica, a must-see in Venice that usually involves hours of queuing and braving crowds of tourists. However, Uniworld guests experienced it in a unique way—we visited in the evening when it was closed to the public, having the entire place to ourselves! To go behind the scenes at a world-renowned landmark was truly unforgettable. Departing Doge’s Palace after our tour and passing the growing queue that had formed outside, it was delightful to know we had bypassed such waits. Other highlights of our trip included witnessing the iconic art of glass-blowing in Murano and savoring exquisite wines at a beautiful winery just outside of Chioggia.

EXPLORING VENICE’S COLOURFUL ISLANDS Venice is the jewel of the lagoon, but its sparkle is amplified by the enchanting islands that surround it, each holding its unique charm and secrets. Burano charmed with its kaleidoscope of coloured houses and intricate lacework, Torcello whispered tales through its ancient basilica, Mazzorbo tantalized with its vineyards, and Chioggia dazzled with its vibrancy. Each island was a unique chapter in the Venetian narrative, offering a richer, more nuanced understanding of this magical region. We had time to explore each of these islands, including overnight docking to experience the calmness devoid of the usual tourist bustle.

OUTSTANDING CULINARY EXPERIENCES Experiencing authentic culinary delights is a fundamental part of the Uniworld experience, and it was evident that Uniworld’s chefs were committed to delivering a plethora of authentic culinary options that showcased Venice and Italian cuisine. The meticulous selection of fresh local ingredients enabled the creation of five-star cuisine, reflecting the diverse and rich flavours of Venice. From premium seafood to meticulously prepared pastas, every dish served was a harmonious blend of tradition and flavour, representing the culinary richness of the region. The carefully curated wines, sourced exclusively from Italy, varied daily, allowing us to savour different flavours from various parts of the region each day. And, of course, no visit to Venice would be complete without indulging in endless Aperol Spritzes, served with the same flair and gusto that characterize this enchanting city. HOW DOES UNIWORLD’S PHILOSOPHY ALIGN WITH SUSTAINABILITY?

As Director of Culinary Operations, you’re responsible for basically the whole culinary offerings on board our ships. I’ve worked for over 20 years in the culinary industry, my love of cooking is truly international, and I love offering our guests exceptional regional dishes.

Ensuring we focus on sustainability is very important of course. How we help our sustainability programme is really to buy as much as possible local, but also the local wines which we bring on board. And by doing that, we avoid our provisions coming from hundreds of miles away. And at the same time, we’re promoting the local beautiful cuisine, which is available wherever our guests are travelling. Our chefs also have the freedom to go ashore, go buy local ingredients from local markets to be used on dishes that day. And this is something we really try to promote to our culinary team. By doing this, not only are we supporting the local economy, but at the same time, bring these beautiful local ingredients on board and create regional dishes.

WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH FOOD? It is my profession but at the same time it’s also my hobby. I love food in general, I love cooking, I love preparing it. At the same time, I also really enjoy going to a nice restaurant, enjoy a beautiful meal prepared by very talented chefs. The time I fell in love with food was really because of my mum. My mum cooked beautiful dishes at home. At an early age, I just loved being in the kitchen. I love seafood, and that’s really because I come from an area with a lot of seafood. And I love fishing as well, so when I go fishing, there's nothing more I enjoy than catching a decent-sized sea bass, bringing it home and preparing it nicely for my family. WHAT IS UNIWORLD’S CULINARY PHILOSOPHY? To put it simply, our menu’s onboard really reflects to the area where we are bringing our guests. So, if you start your cruise, for example, in the Netherlands and you go all the way up to Germany and Switzerland and end up in Budapest, you will start your cruise with Dutch-inspired dishes, continue with the German cuisine and end up in Budapest, where a beautiful Hungarian goulash is waiting for you. We have a lot of returning guests, so that means they are visiting all our ships in different places on different rivers in Europe. And what we keep on hearing is obviously they love the food. The regional focus we bring into our culinary offerings is something they always pick up and they always make comments about. And I think that’s really a strong aspect in our culinary offerings on board. Our food philosophy is really don’t make it too complicated, simple, fresh, luxurious – paired with great local wines that our guests continue to love.

One couple re-counts their mesmerising journey aboard Uniworld's "Golden Triangle & the Sacred Ganges."

n all our travels, we rarely found the impulse to share our stories. But Uniworld’s 15-day escapade through India’s Golden Triangle and the Sacred Ganges compelled us to narrate our tale. What transpired during those days was more than just a holiday – it was an immersive story waiting to be told.

Previous river cruise experiences had set the bar high for us. The ending pandemic allowed us to embark on the Douro River cruise, which was rescheduled multiple times but turned out marvellous. Similarly, our India adventure with Uniworld was postponed but was worth the wait. From the get-go, even with the pandemic-induced hiccups, Uniworld’s dedication to customer satisfaction was exceptional. They held our hands AUTUMN EDITION 2023

through rescheduled plans, granting us the peace of mind we dearly sought. We were inspired to do this cruise by Jane McDonald, having watched her sail this exact itinerary on her Channel 5 programme “Cruising India with Jane McDonald”. Our initial mindset has us wondering if we’d experience that same charm and luxury Jane received, despite there being no cameras following us around. We needn’t have worried.

Our voyage commenced at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. We were met on arrival by a member of the Uniworld team and guided to a plush Mercedes, which transferred us to our first of three Oberoi hotels, the Oberoi New Delhi. We’ve stayed in five-star hotels before, but the New Delhi Oberoi was something else! Once we’d spent time settling in, it was time for the official excursions to begin. Vishal, our Tour Manager, showed us the vibrant shades of India, from exploring the bustling streets of Old Delhi on a Rickshaw ride to the serene corners of the Khan Market. A fascinating way to start our adventure. As our time in Delhi concluded, we journeyed to the next leg of India’s Golden Triangle: Agra, home of the iconic Taj Mahal. Arriving at the Oberoi Amarvilas, my wife’s exclamation drew my attention to what first appeared to be a picturesque garden view. But with a closer look, there it stood, the iconic silhouette of the Taj Mahal right from our window! An experience later that evening further solidified the monument’s allure for me.

We ventured out in the late afternoon, and as we passed through the main archway of the Taj, I was engulfed by an overwhelming emotion. The setting sun cast a golden hue over the Taj, painting a picture so ethereal it seemed as though it was pulled straight from a fairy tale. This twilight enchantment was complemented perfectly the next day. We returned at dawn, before the usual crowds, and were greeted by the Taj bathed in the gentle light of sunrise.

The Pink city of Jaipur

The journey continued to Jaipur, the ‘Pink City’, where we found many places of interest, some previously unknown to us, but truly worth visiting India for, including the amazing Amber Fort. Aboard the Ganges Voyager II, we delved into the heart of the Ganges. We witnessed local life unfolding on its banks, visited age-old villages, and observed sacred rituals – each day presenting insights into the profound connection between the river and its people. A particular culinary note aboard deserves mention. Dining can be a

challenge for my wife due to her Coeliac condition, but both the hotels and the Ganges Voyager II ensured her needs were met with a variety of delicious choices. For me, after a decades-long hiatus from Indian food due to a past mishap, I was keen to immerse myself in local flavours. To my delight, not only did I rekindle my passion, but I also found myself falling in love all over again with authentic Indian cuisine. Recounting this journey, I recall our initial wonder if our experience would match Jane McDonald’s televised one. Rest assured; it wasn’t just on par; it felt even more personalised, more enriching. And thus, with a heart full of gratitude, I recount this tale, hoping it inspires many more to embark on their own Uniworld saga.
