An interview with the newlyweds How did you meet? Whitney: We met in Jerusalem on a study abroad. I think the first time we had a real conversation was on a field trip. We talked for two hours driving through Israel’s desert to the Negev. Taylor: Study abroad in Jerusalem.

What was your first impression? Whitney: Big muscles. Beautiful eyes. Taylor: I thought she might be a little bit of a rebel and not my type.

What did you do on your first date? Whitney: Our first date was in Paris! We went on this crazy roller coaster in the park and I wanted to die--it never ended! Then we went on the ferris wheel! We walked around talking and then ate some crepes sitting in a little alley way. We made up a story about each person that walked by.

Taylor: We went to a carnival in Paris. We went on a roller coaster that we both got sick of about halfway through and had the realization we must be getting old. Then we did the ferris wheel and found chocolate cookies at Subway and bought crepes at a stand on the street.

Who initiated the first kiss? Whitney: We were laying on a hammock on the shores of Galilee looking up at the stars. I was not expecting it at all! Taylor just went for it! Taylor: I did, if she was in charge of initiating that we still wouldn’t have kissed to this day; she’d be too nervous.

Who said “I love you” first? Whitney: Tay! It took me about 10 minutes to say it back. I was being shy. Taylor: I did, it took a while for her to get the courage to say it back but I knew she loved me even before I told her I loved her.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about each other since you began dating? Whitney: Taylor is really passionate about certain movies and TV shows. If I don’t give the screen my undivided attention he pauses it and quizzes me on what’s going on! I always fail his quizzes. Taylor: She is better than me at everything. Surfing, dirt biking, working out, school etc.

What is one of your favorite memories together? Whitney: We were sitting in the laundry room on the second floor of the Jerusalem Center and Taylor told me that he liked me. It was sweet. I had no idea, and I was so excited! Taylor: We fell in love on the shore of the Sea of Galilee.

What do you love most about each other? Whitney: I love everything about Taylor! Everything! He makes me a better person. He is goal driven, dedicated, determined, smart, funny, loving, and every good adjective that you could ever think of! Taylor is selfless and is always turned outward. I LOVE him! Taylor: She unconditionally loves me and everyone close to her. She will always love me no matter what and give me her whole heart. I’m overwhelmed by her love for me. It inspires me to be a better person, so I can live up to the trust she has in me. I never want to let her down.

When did you know you were meant to be? Whitney: While we were on our study abroad, we visited Jordan. As I was laying in my bed one night--very confused about the situation at the time, I said a short prayer and I knew that it had to be Taylor. He was it. Taylor: We sat at the bottom of the Jerusalem Center overlooking the city. We shared personal stories and experiences with each other and I knew I loved her. Then, in Paris we prayed together at the hotel about getting married and I knew that I had wanted to marry her for a long time.

What’s next for you two? Whitney: For the next two years I will be working hard in the nursing program. I plan to graduate and pass the NCLEX. I think that my nursing degree will be a huge blessing to my family. My dream job is to be a Mom! I also want to be there for Taylor as he works hard to graduate. Taylor: I will continue going to BYU for two and half more years until I finish BYU’s masters of accountancy program. After that, we hope to find a job close to family and have six kids (unless I can talk Whitney into having eight). #whitandtay | 5

The Proposal as told by Taylor Bassett We had already decided we wanted to get married by the time we got home from Jerusalem and Paris so I just needed to propose to make it official. The week after our trips finished we went ring shopping on Monday. The week after our trips finished, she picked the ring she wanted. The jeweler told us he could have it ready by Friday. Whitney knows how impatient I am. It was obvious I was going to propose as soon as I got my hands on the ring. We had talked about how it was unfortunate it wouldn’t be a surprise, because she knew it was coming, but decided we had a great story leading up to the proposal. I was driving up to her house that week on Wednesday when the jeweler called me and said the ring was ready a couple days early. I was so excited that I was going to be able to surprise her after all! I ran over to Salt Lake to pick up the ring and told Whitney to meet me at La Caille so we could show my sister, Jessica, where we would be having our reception. We met her there and sent Jessica in to ask the staff about something. I brought Whit around back underneath the gazebo and proposed to her there. It was last minute but still a success, because it was a surprise in the perfect location.
