Pick Me Up

Unlimited at Pick Me Up 2013

During two sunny weeks last April, Unlimited relocated and set up shop in London’s Somerset House to take part in the UK’s original graphic arts festival, Pick Me Up. Alongside other leading graphic art groups and creatives, we were selected to have our very own gallery space to exhibit a range of work from our Unlimited collective. As well as displaying the enormous collection of graphic art prints on offer, Pick Me Up also hosts an array of workshops and events to entertain the 1500+ daily visitors. To join in the fun, Unlimited hosted live drawing sessions with the El Famoso boys — drawing a huge one-off artwork as well as customising a chair in our space. Will Scobie also added his unique illustrations to more of our furniture, whilst Rhona Garvin and Imeus Design both held demo workshops, showing how small-scale silkscreen and gocco printing can be used to great effect. All in all, Pick Me Up was an amazing event to be a part of and we were hugely inspired by the other collectives and artists around us. The positive feedback we received from both visitors and organisers was overwhelming. Would we do it next year? Without a doubt! Bring it on!...

El Famoso Brothers Rich and Chris Fairhead have combined their pen skills to become the ultimate illustration monster, El Famoso. Having joined our creative collective this Spring, Pick Me Up gave us the perfect opportunity to showcase their amazing talent. (We were also really rather pleased to have our very own ‘Unlimited Tat Girl’ print designed by them! Thanks boys!)

Who do you most admire? Rich: Any creative friends that are getting by doing their shit. Chris: Sailor Jerry, Basquiat, Mr Kipling, Robin Hood, Kozyndan, Rocky, E.T., Will Sweeney, Clint Eastwood, Phil Frost.

Your earliest memories? You both studied at Kingston University in illustration and animation, what was your first big job together? I’d say our first big project was our joint show ‘God’s Sketchbook’ back in 2009 at a gallery in East London. This is where live drawings of weird and wonderful beasts and lands poured from our bald heads.

Running through the forests all wild and free, building stuff out of lego and drawing dinosaurs.

What do you think the secret to success is? Support of your friends and family / lots of money.

What are you reading at the moment? When did you decide to join brotherly forces and form El Famoso?

Chris: ‘Cities of the Plains’ by Cormac McCarthy.

Our pens combined not long after the ‘God’s Sketchbook’ show to become El Famoso. We spent a very long time deciding on a name, the list was long (Devil’s Lunchbox was a close second).

Rich: ‘Sisters Brothers’ by Patrick Dewitt.

How does this work for you both?

Risk is our middle name.

El Famoso is a chance for us to concentrate on projects, prints and murals that we enjoy working on. We’ve got a similar sense of humour, so it’s fairly easy to work together.

Where do you see yourself and El Famoso in a few years from now?

What’s been your biggest achievement to date?

Rich: Doing a lot more massive murals. I also really want ‘El Famoso’ made into a neon sign. This will hang in our massive studio / gallery.

We’ve worked on a number of projects over the last few years. The most work we’ve produced was for ‘Fathoms Deep’ at the Hayward Gallery. It was a real treat working with some great illustrators in such a renowned space. It also it kicked off the style with which we are working in today.

When working in your studio what’s playing on the radio/stereo? Howlin Wolf, Toots & the Maytals, QOTSA, Johnny Cash, Mariachi El Bronx, De La Soul, The Black Key’s, Muse.

Are you risk-takers? You seem pretty laid back and free-spirited judging by your work.

Chris: On a throne of gold and jewels.

Dream job/client? Combined, we’ve been really lucky to work with clients like Nike, Casio, BT, Coke, Random House, Camel and Saatchi so working with them again would be great. Off the top of our heads, it would be great to collaborate / work with – Morning Breath inc, Adidas, Kracken Rum, Weiden + Kennedy, Muse, Elvis Rd… Basically, anyone that likes our scribbles.

Any tattoos that we can know about? Where do you draw your influences from? Music, food, art, people, surroundings? El Famoso likes warriors, monsters, gods, witch craft, animals, hand-painted signs, Mr Kipling, toys, party nibbles, 80’s films, Johnny Cash, Russian criminal tattoos, tribes, comics, heroes, killer robots, bad films, graffiti, rum, London, posters, B&W, fantasy, folk and some other bits and bobs.

Rich: Well, I’ve got about 8 including a threeeyed lady, a victorian boxer and a merchant ship. Chris is yet to succumb... Prints by El Famoso are available online at www.unlimitedshop.co.uk

SCI-FI VANDALISM

As huge fans of Anthony Peters (aka Imeus Design), we were really proud to host his solo show Head To Toe last year. We are incredibly chuffed he has once again shown his enthusiasm and support by producing a brand new range of prints for Unlimited as part of his brilliant Sci-fi Vandalism series...

“Sci-fi Vandalism is a range of prints derived from a need to deviate from what I normally do, like a twisted version of doodling whilst being put on hold to some inept Customer Service department. The idea is simple enough – take one colour line drawings from vintage books and vandalise them digitally, changing the context and narrative to something more sinister or humorous.”

“Any good side project often starts to take centre stage and I have found myself doing screen prints and goccos of the work. I’m now slowly weening myself off the original material and beginning to create the line work from scratch.” Prints by Imeus Design are available online at www.unlimitedshop.co.uk

Rhona Garvin

We love Rhona Garvin’s work (we even have a giant piece of her artwork painted on the outside of our shop!) and are really excited to be showcasing two of her latest prints. Originally heralding from Northern Ireland, Rhona now lives and works in Brighton where she completed an MA in Sequential Design and Illustration. She has since worked on a wide range of editorial, exhibition and brand identity commissions.

“I’ve been obsessed with illustration forever. Snoopy came first, then Sick, sick, sick! (Jules Pfeiffer). As an adult I turned to classic masters like Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Alvin Lustig and Bruno Mari enjoying the way that they pared things right back, using minimal, even childlike content for powerful communication and impact.” “Making prints has changed the way I approach illustration. I look for simple, graphic

ways of making images – removing and editing content until I’m sure there’s nothing unnecessary included. Recently I’ve been involved in running and helping to facilitate workshops in schools and museums. Each time I’m delighted to find that children’s ideas are still basically better than the grown ups. I have a lot to learn/steal from them!” Rhona’s prints are available online at www.unlimitedshop.co.uk

Chloe Batchelor

Brighton based illustrator, Chloe Batchelor, loves nothing more than drawing monsters, cycling mammoths and grizzly bears. Her work – a quirky mix of hand-drawn and vector-based fun combined with vibrant shades and colours – is a huge hit with all ages, and brings out the big kid in all of us!

Chloe has been busy creating two fabulously surreal new worlds in a pair of handpulled, two colour screen prints produced specifically for our exhibition at Pick Me Up. First up is Tea – a land which grew around a fairground cup and saucer ride to include living tree houses, a viking-manned

rum bar and driving cyclopes. Whilst Milk is a bustling landscape of living mountains which house a number of curious inhabitants, including a thirsty taxi lion and a sea monster who’ll eat your car given half a chance. Chloe’s prints are available online at www.unlimitedshop.co.uk
