AWARDS SPECIAL ● CALENDAR ● FESTIVE BUSINESS FOCUS ● COMPETITION TIME unLTDBUSINESS.COM

WINNING TIMES?! It’s a very exciting time indeed for team unLTD as we are chuffed to have been shortlisted for a Sheffield Business Award! As our editor Richard Fidler says in The Diary on page 13: “When we started the magazine, we had no idea of the reaction we’d get from the city region business community.” Which makes it all the better to know that we are in the Creative Impact category of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce awards – clearly, we have had an impact! But we’re up against stiff competition as you’ll see from our feature on the Awards on page 37, where we share the spotlight with all our fellow nominees. And it’s really rewarding for us to see just how many of them we have featured over the last two years – from cover stars and Company Culture, to Your Pitch and 5 Minutes With. Speaking of Five Minutes With, in this very issue on page 67 you can read all about Hugo Russell of NowThen Cleaners’ pride on their ‘quality, reliable and modern’ business being shortlisted in the Awards. And before we leave the subject of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, there’s the matter of our cover stars. WorkBox UK Ltd MD Matt Jackson has taken the President’s chains of office at Sheffield Chamber of Commerce’s AGM – and outgoing President Steve Manley, joint MD of Universal Office Products (and a good mate of Matt’s) handed them over. Refereeing a bit of friendly banter, Jill Theobald put away her shorthand pad and let them interview each other (and is slightly nervous for her features writer role after hearing some quality questions from both!) Our Focus On feature on page 46 looks at how transferable skills are being used to boost employees and employer alike at Central Technology (CT Ltd) – and beyond. And is it just us getting into the festive spirit early? Apparently not – South Yorkshire is home to hundreds of independent businesses and big-name brands offering something slightly different to your usual festive fare. Whether it’s gifts, food and drink or events you’re looking for this winter, unLTD’s Sasha Mossman has got you covered over on page 70.

AGENDA NEWS London’s investors and developers back the north on HS2 The London Property Alliance has formally endorsed the Eastern Leg of HS2 in a submission to the Oakervee HS2 Review, following reports the route via East Midlands to Sheffield, Leeds and the North East could be abandoned to save money. CBE-honoured civil engineer Douglas Oakervee has been commissioned by government to lead an independent review looking at ways to streamline the total cost of HS2, which has risen to £88 billion. Reports have indicated scrapping the Eastern Leg could save around £10 billion of taxpayers’ money, but have been met with fierce opposition by politicians in Leeds and Sheffield, who believe the decision could have major ramifications to the economy in Yorkshire, the East Midlands and the North East. Around

Sheffield City Region – with aligned support from the Sheffield Property Association (S-PA) – submitted a written proposal for inclusion in the Oakervee report showcasing the strong economic benefits of the Eastern Leg. S-PA Chair Martin McKervey said: “Members of the London Property Alliance and S-PA are the businesses that are going to deliver the regeneration opportunities unlocked by HS2. That is why we are ensuring the voice of investors is heard in Whitehall.” The Oakervee HS2 Review is officially due for public release this autumn.

OFFICE HEROES FLYING HIGH! The Office Heroes Awards are returning for a second year to honour Sheffield’s ‘unsung workplace champions’ – but the deadline is fast approaching. Created and organised by Sheffield-based Glu Recruit, the awards recognise those who go the extra mile in their work. City’s ‘barrier-busting’ agreement to improve digital connectivity Sheffield City Council has signed an agreement to work with Openreach to deploy a faster, more reliable, full-fibre digital network to homes and businesses as fast as possible. The council’s Digital Connectivity Strategy was endorsed by councillors after a pledge to improve digital connectivity in the city,

increasing coverage, choice and speed of communication to enable residents and businesses to use digital solutions to improve their lives and to sustain, grow and create new business. One of the Council’s objectives is to become an industry-recognised, proinvestment, ‘Barrier Busting’ city.

Councillor Bryan Lodge, Cabinet Adviser for Finance, Resources and Governance, said: “We want Sheffield to be recognised by the digital industry as an attractive place to invest, where the local authority proactively supports operators and removes barriers to the deployment of infrastructure.”

THE DIARY BY RICHARD FIDLER

Our editor says being shortlisted for a business award is a great achievement

Spare a thought for the Christmas party organiser

PLEASED TO SEE UNLTD MAKING AN IMPACT We were pleasantly surprised, but hugely pleased, that unLTD has been shortlisted in the Sheffield Business Awards for the Creative Impact Award. When we started the magazine we had no idea of the reaction we’d get from the city region business community. Our aim was to produce a publication that spoke to people in their language. We didn’t want it to be full of jargon or bordering on the pretentious when – in the real world – most of us just want to do a good day’s work and then go home. That’s not to say that work is just a 9 to 5. We tend to see our colleagues for longer than some members of our family so it’s important that our

employers provide the right environment for us to be at our best for what we’re paid to do. One of the features I’m most proud of is the ‘Company Culture’ pages where we have profiled several local businesses who are going above and beyond in what they provide for their staff – including Office Friendly and BHP. Also we wanted to take people away from the office so the ‘After Hours’ section was created giving ideas for weekends away or the best places to get your sweet treats – and then in a later issue the best gyms to burn off all those calories! Awards are important for businesses. The PR firm I run, HRM, regularly put together applications on behalf of our

clients for industry or regional awards. They provide a focus for the business and a validation of how well you’re doing if you’re shortlisted or even lucky enough to come out on top. Some of our most satisfying work is when we hear about a client winning. Work is hard enough at times so it’s important to celebrate the successes – or at the very least be in a position where you’re committing all the good things you do to paper. Whether we win or not at the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce awards next month we’re proud of how far we’ve come in less than two years. And without sounding sycophantic it can only be done with great stories to tell. So, thank you.

Everyone ready for their Christmas party? Bit soon? Well, I bet by the end of the month you’ll know someone who has already had theirs. A very quick search online sees venues offering ‘Christmas Nights’ from as early as November 22! This isn’t an article bemoaning Christmas hype arriving earlier every year – far from it, it’s one of the best times of the year. Workplaces have a different feel as party season begins, whether that’s your own one or attending those you have been invited to by clients or partner organisations. I do, however, feel sorry for the person in the office who is entrusted with organising the Christmas party. It’s a thankless task and one that invariably doesn’t please all of the people all of the time. First, there’s finding a date that suits everyone, then there’s matching that date with the venue of your choice. Finding the right venue is a whole saga in itself! And all the time there are budgets to work towards as well as the day job to be getting on with. I wonder whether it is possible to both organise a Christmas party and enjoy it at the same time. Surely the two separate elements aren’t compatible. Whenever you have your Christmas bash have a good one and if you can remember to say thank you to the organiser then all the better!

Our tech expert says adapting to modern marketing is key to beating the competition

HOW TO RUN A SUCCESSFUL LOCAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN As a local business, you may not have the same budgets as high-street giants, but adapting to modern marketing is still the key to beating the competition. Here I’ve listed my top tips for a successful local marketing campaign.

Local citations Along with Google using third party listings to verify you are a real business, listings on a local directory are a really simple way to drive local traffic and sales. Geo-targeted ads It’s possible to localise your paid ads, optimising by area. Alongside local keywords in your headings, geo-target your Google ads so they appear in your desired radius around a specific location. Additionally, utilise location extensions and click-to-call. Facebook and Twitter also allow hyper targeting by location, with Facebook even permitting postcode-level targeting.

Social engagement Joining social media groups is the ideal way to engage with your target market and other local business owners. Where you can, tag locations in your social posts and include your local, popular hashtags. There’s a small fee, but it’s also worth joining your local Chamber of Commerce; it’s their mission to support and grow local businesses. FINANCIAL HEALTH

BY RAJ SHAH, DIRECTOR AND PRINCIPAL OF BLUE WEALTH CAPITAL Our new columnist shares how his inspiring father gave him a ‘real sense of purpose’

A SENSE OF PURPOSE In February, my dad passed away suddenly. My world and that of my family changed overnight. My parents, like many Indians, came to the UK in the 1960s from East Africa with very little. They worked hard, building a profitable business that provided well for our family. Dad was well known in the business and wider community in Hull and in the immediate aftermath of his death, the family took immense comfort from the many stories about his generosity, kindness and real passion for helping others. We often joked about what Dad would do when he retired (if he ever would have retired!) because his business was him, his life, our family’s life. It was Dad’s sense of purpose. I started my business in 2009 with a small loan from Dad. In 2011 my wife and I had our first child, shortly followed by his brother in 2013. The next

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

few years passed by in a blur (long hours, sleepless nights, soft play centres – you get the picture!) Dad’s sudden death this year jolted me and, as the eldest son and an executor of his will I went into ‘solutionmode’. After dealing with all the practical matters that need to be dealt with after a death, I have now had time to reflect. I’ve thought about my dad’s purpose and I’ve questioned what my own is. Right now, that is to work hard to provide for my family. But I’ve also realised that my sense of purpose really is to do well by doing good. Over the last four years, I’ve been helping young adults who have difficulty accessing mainstream education with financial, literacy and general life skills. I was privileged to be invited to Buckingham Palace and to the House of Lords in recognition of this. Last week I, along with 20 other financial planners (out

of 30,000), became founding members of The Institute of Financial Wellbeing, the focus of which is improving people's relationship with, and understanding of, money. I feel happy that I am doing well by doing good. Many people come to me as a financial planner when they are at a certain point in life, usually when they are starting to think about selling or passing the business on. They don’t want to be sold financial products or investments. They want the peace of mind of knowing where they are heading financially and the security of knowing they can maintain their lifestyle. Once we have shown them that they have ‘enough’ or what they need to do to get to a position when they have ‘enough’, they then have the confidence to be able to do the things that will enable them to live their life to the full. After all, life is not a rehearsal!

For some people, knowing they have ‘enough’ is enough. For others, along with the security of knowing they have ‘enough’, they need help to define and maintain a sense of purpose. We all remember the famous Mars bar tag line ‘work, rest and play’. When work is taken out of the equation i.e. the business is sold, ‘rest and play’ remains but there is a void where ‘work’ once was. Engaging a high quality financial planner who can work with you to ensure you have ‘enough’ and who understands the importance of maintaining a sense of purpose could be the key to your personal and financial wellbeing well into the next phase of life (note I didn’t use the word retirement!). Raj Shah is founder of Blue Wealth capital and has been shortlisted for Financial Planner of the Year and Investment Adviser of the Year. www.bluewealthcapital.com

LEGAL

LEGAL MATTERS

BY CHARLES B. NEAL, NOTARY PUBLIC AND SOLICITOR AT BELL & BUXTON Our columnist talks us through the ‘rare beast’ that is a Notary Public

Rodgers

T

Z

k

WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC FOR? The Notary Public is quite a rare beast. There are only about 750 of them in England. Notaries are distinct from both solicitors and barristers. They trace their origin back to the scribes in the Roman Empire who would record the activities and decisions of the tribunes and magistrates. The notaries became the people who would maintain the record of official legal acts of the citizenry. They are often, in civil law countries, the people who deal with the buying and selling of land, keeping the records of ownership and recording the fact and distribution of estates. Also they would record the wishes of a person in the form of only notarial Will. In many countries, notaries are

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

required to record commercial contracts. Although notaries were not a feature of the Common Law in England, they have existed here for centuries often working through the church. At the time of Henry VIII’s break with the Papacy, there were several papal notaries operating in England. So the power to grant notarial status in England transferred to the Archbishop of Canterbury who today authorises and regulates notaries in England and Wales and in some territories (Gibraltar), commonwealth states (Queensland in Australia) and countries (New Zealand). The work of a Notary in England is varied. Leaving aside technical tasks relating to ship protests (not much call for

that in Sheffield) and noting or protesting Bills of Exchange (a method of commercial finances which is no longer very common) a notary may well deal with property matters, probate and the administration of estates. Otherwise, most of the notary’s tasks relate to persons or institutions with an international or interjurisdictional matter. A Notary will provide proof of identity for use abroad, authenticate educational certificates for people studying or working abroad and authenticate powers of attorney by individuals and companies as well as witnesses or authenticating various acts by a company or company directors A Notary is not simply

certifying a document or witnessing a signature, they are authenticating it, confirming the identity and authority of the person who is signing or authorising the act. The document once ‘notarised’ is matter of public record. A notarial act is regarded as proof without the need for further evidence (Civil Procedure Rules 1998 Rule 32.20). There are not many Notaries in the Sheffield region but there is one right in the city centre! And I can provide notarial services for individuals and businesses. Charles B. SALES

SALES STRATEGY BY STEVE KNAPP, THE SALES MINDSET COACH

Our new columnist says SCR businesses must adapt to change – and fast!

IMPLEMENT CHANGE– ANDFAST! Brexit has brought an unprecedented amount of uncertainty to the region and to the country. And anyone that runs their own business knows there’s nothing worse in life than… you guessed it… uncertainty. I would argue the situation is potentially far worse for great swathes of the Sheffield City Region as its traditional manufacturing sector is already incredibly vulnerable. I know, because I’ve seen it first-hand. I was the region’s main salesperson for Shell in the 1990s and dealt with scores of the area’s biggest manufacturing names. It’s a situation that worries me deeply because many of these local firms with long histories are – often unknowingly – playing Russian Roulette with their futures. So many of them are using outmoded selling techniques that are totally out of touch

ed ed le.

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

with the digital age. Research has shown that fifty seven per cent of the buying decisions are made online today and these firms are being left behind by their competition. So many are unprepared for sales, don’t research their target customers and don’t invest in their sales staff. They are relying on the same sales strategies they were using when I was dealing with them nearly 30 years ago. The upheaval of Brexit – and let’s face it, nobody really knows what’s going to happen – could easily be the death knell for many of them. Business owners must be continually open to change in their marketing and selling techniques as a matter of course. They must stand out from their competitors, they must offer new ways to solve the problems of their target clients and they must have exemplary selling techniques.

I learned my craft from the very bottom – selling Calor Gas cylinders door-to-door in the late 1980s – and was lucky enough to advance to the top, responsible for devising and implementing cutting edge strategies for Shell that were adopted right around the globe and still help maintain the company’s dominance today. And I know there is nothing more important in a company’s sales plan than being ahead of your competition in your marketing. You can read more about this in my Success Story feature on pages 42-43 – but for here and now my message is simple: You have to be the very best. You have to invest in your staff. You have to be ahead of the competition. I specialise in working with the region’s SMEs – companies that can implement change fast. The same can’t be said

for many of these bigger, traditional companies. In my talks I regularly talk about 10 common reasons a company isn’t selling. One of the key ones is outmoded selling and marketing techniques. This is the crux of the problem for many of these traditional manufacturing companies. Their website, brochures and presentation materials haven’t been updated for years. They’ve still got a fax number on their material or a logo for Google+ – what does that say about them!? They’re not using social media to research their customers. They’re not excited about the products they sell and the problems they solve. And if they’re not, why the heck should their potential customers be? Our new columnist shares some top time management tips

PUTTING YOU FIRST #youfirst, business second. Hardly the advice you would expect from a business owner and a coach who helps entrepreneurs succeed and win, is it? However, as the first pillar of HEW is health, and your health completely revolves around you, there is no avoiding the importance of you as the foundation to your success. It has always amazed me how so many business owners neglect themselves and don’t appreciate how valuable their own health and wellbeing is to that of their business. Think about it – you don’t want to build a business and simultaneously run yourself into the ground, do you? It’s so very easy to fully immerse yourself into concentrating on the health of your business. Considering everything from marketing

and branding, sales pitches and the holy grail of business – the all-important levels of revenue and profit. Think how all of that would look a great deal healthier, and naturally be more fruitful, if you concentrated on yourself first and foremost. Entrepreneurship is exciting and fun – you get to finally take the lead over your ideas, initiative and passion. We all know, however, that business is never easy. It requires a healthy and happy version of you to tackle it head on, warts and all. Remember, others also want to do business with healthy, happy and vibrant business owners who exude positive energy, demonstrate a can-do attitude and radiate genuine personality. This next bit is not rocket science to anyone, but it becomes truly neglected when

it comes to entrepreneurs and the application of time management: 1. Schedule some form of physical activity every day. If logistically this can’t happen before your working day begins, then schedule it at lunch or in the evening. Don’t underestimate how powerful even a 15-20 minute walk can be.

WELCOME

MR. PRESIDENT WorkBox UK Ltd MD Matt Jackson has taken the President’s chains of office at Sheffield Chamber of Commerce’s AGM – and outgoing President Steve Manley, joint MD of Universal Office Products (and a good mate of Matt’s) was the one to hand them over. unLTD’s Jill Theobald put away her shorthand pad and let them interview each other on their achievements and aspirations … and refereed a bit of friendly banter, too! 28

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

COVER STORY

Steve Manley: Obviously we’re good mates and I know all about you. But tell the unLTD readers about your Chamber journey from becoming a member to becoming President. Matt Jackson: When I first started out 13 years ago I went to the Chamber’s start-up agency SENTA. I joined as a member, went to several events, became busy, got involved with some other organisations and stepped away from the Chamber. Then about eight years ago you joined the Chamber Council and suggested I got involved. I got in touch with (executive director) Richard Wright and enjoyed finding out how the Chamber worked internally, how it lobbied and how crucial it was as the voice of the business for the city and more widely

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

geographically. I took the role of Junior Vice President after you became Vice President so we’ve gone through this whole cycle together! Obviously when your home city asks you to represent the business community to the outside world it’s a real honour. But it’s a really important role to be taking on right now at a time of such great social and economic change. I’ve certainly never known a period like it in my lifetime. We’ve also got a new generation coming through into the working world with aspirations and attitudes that are considerably different to Generation X, my generation, and previous generations. Steve: Each President likes to put their own stamp on

I want to make sure the Chamber is fit for purpose now and in the future – I want us to be relevant to traditional businesses as well as new and up and coming businesses

their year. What is your theme? Matt: Modernisation and the Chamber of the Future – I want to make sure the Chamber is fit for purpose now and in the future. I want us to be relevant to traditional businesses as well as new and up and coming businesses because I do think there’s a bit of a disconnect with the latter. Steve: Agreed. One of my two main aims during my presidency was similarly to counter this misconception that the Chamber is an old boys club but that’s a longterm mission. My year and highlights like the President’s Dinner were a start but it’s not a one-off hit – challenging and changing those misconceptions is going to be a four- or five-year cycle.

Matt: Yes, and I know that following you and then me we have Alexis (Krachai. Managing Director Counter Context) as President who is also keen on change. My approach is all about evolution. The perception of the Chamber as an old boys’ club is absolutely not the case. We live in a great place and we need to link those different sectors and elements together so we can connect and grow. There are things going on in the digital world that other businesses could benefit from but there isn’t enough crosspollination. I will be going out to meet key stakeholders in various sectors and encourage better collaboration and I really want

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

to develop that over the year. I’ve got ideas for a conference centered around technology that brings different sectors together. I’ll be looking at our premises too. The lease is coming up on Albion House (the Chamber’s current HQ on Savile Street) and we may move next year. I want our new space to be very different, I’m looking at co-working, collaboration, hot desking and ideally I’d like to have a business coffee bar so people can just drop by. At the moment members don’t tend to visit our offices unless it’s for training or international trade. I want our doors to be open to our members so they can pop in, meet new people, hot desk, collaborate, work. It’s what I do – WorkBox UK is all about

helping businesses change the space they work in so I will really be driving that for the Chamber while I am President. Steve: With the challenges facing the city do you want to work with Sheffield City Council, LEP, and others to try and corral more of a joined-up thinking process? Matt: We need to tackle what I see as regional squabbling and organisational squabbling and that can only start with a conversation. A lot in the past has been driven by personality clashes so we need to work through that. The Chamber needs to be open and willing to working with others. We need to work with the Council and other stakeholders on creating an environment for

business that provides what they require and aspire to. Part of that will be continuing to champion entrepreneurship and youth enterprise – your second mission, Steve! Is the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Business and Enterprise Academy what you are most proud of from your year in office? Steve: Absolutely. I took the chains of office in 2018 on a mission to encourage youth enterprise because of its importance. I became involved with Young Enterprise – a nonprofit organisation working with schools and colleges to inspire the next generation of young entrepreneurs – while a student myself at Loxley College in 1993/4.

But I wasn’t sure until a few months into my Presidency how I was going to deliver on that and create something that was sustainable and tangible after my year in office, too. So, after pledging to support young entrepreneurs, I was thrilled to establish the Academy with The Sheffield College. My long-term mission is by 2029 our Academy has led to the creation of the first Sheffield College Entrepreneur millionaire. You can easily fall into the trap of a scattergun approach when it comes to Presidency themes because it is a parttime role you are combining with your day job and that’s why I settled on the main one of young enterprise. You need a direct, tunnel-vision approach in order to look back after your year and be able to say you’ve delivered on that theme. Matt: We need to continue to champion young people and there’s also the question of where do you go if you want to start-up a business but you’re a little older than Academy age – say 22, 23– and I know you’re

32

involved in developing that side of entrepreneur support beyond the academy? Steve: Yes, because there is no clear path for you as a start-up at that age, so I’m continuing to work with Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Hallam University and The Sheffield College so we can work out the options for people and try and draw up that roadmap. Over the last year, we’ve been working closely together, and as Vice President you’ve been shadowing me. What part of the role are you most excited about? Matt: Becoming the next Steve Manley! No, it’s the continued modernisation of the Chamber that really excites me. We’ve got a new Director of Operations, Stella Steele who is young and dynamic and will bring a fresh way of thinking to the organisation, and two new board members – James Needham from Boeing joining as non-executive director and Karen Mosley of HLM architects as Junior Vice President.

Modernisation of the chamber with our new board and the planned new premises I am sure will play a key part in changing the perception of the President’s role

Steve: And what event are you looking forward to the most? Matt: It was going to be the Business Awards but after your President’s Dinner it’s now that! It’s going to be different next year too – I want the event to be less formal and more of a party! Next question, boss. Steve: Not anymore, I should call you that now! You’ve taken my crown. Matt: You used to call me Junior when you were Vice President! Steve: We had a Lord Mayor in Magid Magid who totally changed people’s perception of the role. Would you want to do something similar to shape the role of Chamber President? Matt: Well I am wearing my Timberlands today – I nearly wore my Doc Martens! But yes, modernisation of the Chamber with our new board and the planned new premises I am sure will play a key part in changing the perception of the President’s role. Steve: You’ve been on the board for two years. What changes have you seen?

Matt: It’s a different dynamic in terms of sector and personalities and that’s driving change within the Chamber. Steve: It was fantastic to be able to report a record year at the AGM – with an increase in profit from -£28,000 from a few years ago to a surplus in excess of £63,000. Matt: The bottom line is to drive change. The financial issues are behind us, we have new members and new businesses joining and the new board members. It does feel fresh. Steve: As well as Chamber

34

President you’re also chair of the board. What’s your leadership style to lead the board? Matt: Listen. Be firm and fair and to the point. Steve: Is there any particular business sector you want the Chamber to engage with more? Matt: Everything digital including AI. That’s somewhere we’re not seen as leading the way on and we’re just not aligned. Steve: Tell the unLTD readers a bit about Matt Jackson the person!

Matt: I was born in Sheffield, went to school here, and have worked in and around the city for the last 25 years. I’m a family man, proud Yorkshireman, petrol head and music fan. I still believe I’m 25 and won’t grow up! My attitude is ‘enjoy every day’. I lost my brother in my 20s and that changed my whole life. It shapes every single day – I know it’s important to live life flat out and to the maximum. My turn for a question! Which Sheffield business inspires you the most?

Steve: The Milestone Group. They’ve stood the test of time for over 10 years, they’re a young business, very forwardthinking which has helped revolutionise Kelham Island, they’ve diversified and put Sheffield on the map. Matt: Definitely, I know (founder) Matt Bigland , I was in the early years of my business when he started up, too. Who’s the most interesting person you’ve met in the role? Steve: Can I have two?! She was so welcoming and humble and delighted to be welcomed into the Hall of Fame – you could just tell how genuine she is. Also her desire to work with and inspire the next generation through her work with young people, promoting science and STEM subjects fitted with my President’s theme perfectly. The second would be Richard Caborn. He was

helpful and supportive from the outset of my Presidency and is so well-connected, passionate about the city and a great ambassador for Sheffield, so it was great to spend time with him. Matt: What are you looking forward to the most after being a president? Steve: I’ve loved the role and feel like I worked in a different sector and business for another year. However the challenge has been running your own business which is very busy, too, and having your own private life all at the same

time. The time as President has been an amazing journey, but it’s been an extremely manic year! I’ve learned so much and enjoyed it, and it’s invigorated me to keep pushing on all other fronts in my life. I’m staying on the board and really looking forward to seeing how the Chamber changes, develops and progresses with different styles of leadership, the new board line-up – and you as President! I’ve known you a long time and I know you’ll do a good job!

companies like our friends like The Milestone Group we’ve featured in this very edition of the mag (read more about Cutlery Works first birthday on page 77!) and Bhayani Law Limited – we welcome their latest appointment on page 13. Simon Harrison of DeeperThanBlue was in the Your Pitch in our November edition last year so it’s fab to see them shortlisted for Digital Transformation Project of the Yea. In the Business Person of the Year, is Jonathan Seaton, of Twinkl Educational Publishing, the focus of a Company Culture back in July/August 2018. Speaking of Company

Culture, BHP told unLTD all about theirs in August, so we’re not surprised to see them in the Employer of the Year category alongside our regular columnists CT Ltd – who have done the double and are also in the running for Excellence in Professional Services. Also in this edition are NowThen Cleaning telling us all about their joy at being shortlisted for the High Growth Business of the Year award in their 5 Minutes With on page 67. Great to see Jenx, the parent company of Jiraffe, in the running for two awards, too – you can read more about Jiraffe in our Focus On feature

in this edition page 46. We put SCX on our cover in May 2019 to showcase their ‘pitch perfect’ stadia developments – and now they’ve made the shortlist for The Innovation Award. Always great to see our cover star from issue 2 – Hannah Duraid from The Great Escape, especially when they’re in the shortlist for The Sheffield Universities Entrepreneurship Award, along with another friend of unLTD, Food Circle who featured in Your Pitch in December last year. And in our debut issue we spoke to Westfield Health for our very first If You Ask Me.

IN-DEPTH WITH LAUNCHPAD

S R E N N I W

It takes a special kind of person to become an entrepreneur – so it was only fitting that Sheffield City Region’s Launchpad Awards 2019 ceremony was an extraordinary event, as the unLTD team found out on the night Some of the newest and most promising start-up businesses from across the Sheffield City Region were given a chance to celebrate and showcase their achievements at Launchpad’s special awards ceremony. Organised by the Sheffield City Region’s Launchpad programme, almost every entrepreneur featured in the 2019 Launchpad Awards has been trading for less than three years, and in many cases, those in the spotlight are taking their very first steps in self-employment. unLTD has been showcasing entrepreneurs and start-ups via our Your Pitch and 5 Minutes With features since issue one – and showcasing Launchpad clients not long after that. So we were chuffed to play our part at the ceremony at 92 Burton Road by sponsoring a category – as our editor Richard Fidler said ahead

40

of the event: “I’m delighted that unLTD is supporting the Launchpad Awards. It’s vital that we, as the city region’s business magazine, support start-up businesses.” And Richard was joined at the awards by our director of sales Phil Turner, graphic designer Simon Garlick and head of sales Dan Laver, too, with Phil handing over the Aspiring Entrepreneur trophy, sponsored by unLTD, to Jennifer Ryder who is launching her brand new business the Cawthorne Cat Hotel this month (November). It was also great to see a previous unLTD feature star LensGo Visual Media crowned the 2019 Launchpad Champion, after being chosen by fellow entrepreneurs during a live vote on the night. It proved to be a night to remember for Stuart Turner, who saw the business he founded in May 2018 also lift the title of ‘Growth Business of Year’

as well as being named as a finalist in two other categories. In a remarkable first year of trading, LensGo Visual Media has secured more than 50 new clients including Gulliver’s Theme Parks, Sheffield Wednesday FC and Rotherham United as well as a range of businesses and not-for-profit organisations. The Launchpad Awards proved to be a memorable night for entrepreneurs throughout the region, with three Barnsley Businesses securing top awards as well as a unique awards double for Sheffield-based William Chew, founder of chilli paste company Mak Tok. Fresh from his recent appearance on the hit BBC TV show Dragons Den, Will walked away with the Inspiring Achiever and Young Entrepreneur trophies. Rotherham’s growing start-up community saw online furniture retailer and

interior design specialist No18 Interiors winning the Start Up Business of the Year title on an evening which celebrated the do-ers and achievers from across the region. The awards ceremony also proved to be a good night for specialist book subscription company My Chronicle Book Box winning the Rising Star Business and last year’s Young Entrepreneur winner Abbie Allert followed up her previous success by winning the Made In Sheffield City Region category with her bespoke children’s clothing company, Mamma Made It. Anna Smith, programme manager, Launchpad said: “We created the Awards in 2018 as a way of showcasing and celebrating the important contribution start-up businesses play in shaping the local economy and this year’s event saw nearly 100 new business owners take part. “The Sheffield City Region

SUCCESS STORY

SALES? DO IT BY THE BOOK! From East End boy to South Yorkshire super salesman – unLTD’s Jill Theobald meets The Sales Mindset Coach Steve Knapp to find out why he is the Sheffield City Region’s go-to guy for ‘sensible, pragmatic’ techniques that blend traditional and contemporary skills From a grocer lad in the East End of London leaving school with few qualifications to founding his own ‘Sales Mindset Coach’ company and training more than 1,000 business owners as well as staff at Sheffield Chamber of Commerce. Oh and in between the small matter of a two-decade role at Shell where he, literally, wrote the book on sales that’s still used by the global energy firm today. Steve Knapp is an unLTD ‘Success story’ indeed! No wonder he’s now launched his own book ‘FunnelVision – Selling Made Easy’ which has been described as “one of the best sales books ever” by Daniel Disney, one of the world’s leading authorities on social selling. But let’s return to the beginning – or chapter one. “I grew up in a big family in Dagenham and Bethnal Green before we moved out of the East End,” says Steve, “and I often reflect on how my path might have been very different. I was not mixing with a bad bunch as such, nothing criminal, but it was certainly an ‘earthy’ experience! But my grounding in a family with a strong work ethic meant I knew I had to get a job and work hard, and I started working in a greengrocers. “When my dad got a new job we moved to leafy Berkshire which was a very different environment – and not the best time to start a new sixth form! My accent marked me out, more socially than educationally.” After leaving school with no qualifications, Steve began

42

his sales career selling Calor Gas cylinders door-to-door in the late 1980s. But he went on to rise through the ranks at Shell to become responsible for the company’s sales teams right across the globe, with his selling methods and ‘mindset’ techniques adopted across the business including his aforementioned handbook. Steve moved from Berkshire to Nottingham to work for Calor but was driving to head office in Manchester regularly. He met his wife, who was working in marketing at Shell, and they decided to move to Bamford as it was ‘slap bang in the middle’ over 20 years ago, enjoying life on the outskirts of the Peak District with their three children ever since. And the decision to take the leap into becoming entrepreneur? “I knew Shell were looking to diversify the culture – and rightly so. The workforce was predominately white, male Europeans and that just isn’t reflected in today’s population, it’s not inclusive enough. I knew there would be job opportunities with them in London for me, but I lived in the Peak District, and so the idea of doing something myself became appealing.” He tried retirement first (“I thought I’d do it for six months, but I quickly got bored!”) before establishing ‘The Sales Mindset Coach’ in spring 2018. Since then, Steve has become a mentor with The Source, worked with more than 1,000 business owners through his Facebook Group, coached in excess of 150 businesses and had scores more join his online

Sales Mindset Coach platform. “Salesmen were seen as Cockney wide boys – your Delboy and Arthur Daley stereotypes,” says Steve. “That portrayal is still there today, and I always felt a little inferior when declaring what I did at a dinner table, when people announced, ‘Doctor’, ‘Lawyer’, ‘Accountant’. It’s my mission to change that. The sales culture really needs a shake-up, and with that, an improved and enhanced image and reputation will follow.” He’s already taking the lead. A member of the Association of Professional Sales, he’s also a keen supporter of the lobby working towards a charter mark for the industry by 2020. And now the next chapter – his book which he hopes will resonate with business owners across the Sheffield City Region (SCR). Despite never having the ‘desire’ to be an author (“writing 500 words a day on my craft sounded like homework!”), the book sprang to life from his work with Neil Anderson, who has written several books on the SCR’s music and cultural scene. “It was Neil’s involvement and his approach looking at content and asking questions that really got me motivated. Taking what I’d learned from a massive conglomerate and making it accessible from a SME perspective. A lot of the techniques I learned are equally applicable for local firms – my syllabus is a stripped-down version. “Great swathes of the traditional manufacturing sector here, for example, don’t research their target customers

or invest in their sales staff and are relying on outmoded, decades-old sales strategies which are totally out of touch with the digital age. These firms are being left behind – to stand out from competitors, they need sensible, pragmatic selling techniques.” Steve describes his technique as a blend of traditional and digital – pointing out that social media isn’t a sales ‘silver bullet’. “You can’t just post on Facebook and expect people to come to you. Not all customers want to be approached online and those traditional methods are still important – some customers will prefer the personal approach of a phone call or going out to meet and hanging out with them. “The younger emerging generation may well be techsavvy but we have this issue of Millennials in particular and their ‘fear of the phone’ – they can live their lives online via their smartphones but just having the courage to pick it up and speak to someone is a struggle. It means some of the personal and more traditional sales skills of my generation are still valued and necessary.”

NEIL ANDERSON AND STEVE KNAPP WITH ‘FUNNEL VISION’

BOOK REVIEW Steve Knapp is a bit of a sales guru in these parts. After making his name working for Shell as a sales manager and turning around a flagging arm of the business, he has since used that experience to set up on his own, under the guise of the Sales Mindset Coach, running training sessions and workshops on how he believes businesses should put sales at the heart of what they do. His book, Funnel Vision, released last month, is an easy-to-read sales bible for those of you looking for a clear, concise guide to managing your sales strategy, pipelines and extending the customer relationship to create repeat orders. It starts by debunking some of the myths around sales and what you would perceive as the stereotypes that have undermined the industry for years. Steve is an east London boy originally – so it’s a source of great frustration that his most obvious role models as a sales person are Del Boy and Arthur Daley. And he makes a good point, doesn’t he? Stop and think about positive role models in sales for a moment – they aren’t easy to come by are they? That’s where Steve comes in. The book is very logically structured, with helpful charts and tables so that you can work practically through it to implement as you go. It’s not over complicated or too full of jargon either, so will appeal particularly to business owners who have not yet developed a coherent sales approach and are usually put off by business books that lose their interest by being too clever for their audience. And with Steve also asserting that online resources and social media make leads warm before your initial approach, it all means it has never been easier to sell as it is now. The perfect time then to get his book and develop a strategy that works for you.

ADVERTORIAL

BUSINESSES ASKED TO CHECK ALARM SYSTEMS AHEAD OF FIRE SERVICE POLICY CHANGE The fire service will free up time for firefighters by no longer attending automatic fire alarms in commercial buildings like offices and warehouses unless it’s a confirmed fire. Currently South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue automatically sends fire engines to premises the moment a fire alarm goes off and the signal is passed, by a receiving centre, onto 999 control operators. But 97 per cent of the 3,457 automatic alarms the service attended in business premises in the last three years turned out to be false alarms. Fire crews wasted more than 1,000 hours investigating the cause of those false alarms – time which could have been better spent training, working in the community or

44

being available to attend other, genuine incidents. The change brings South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue in line with other services around the country, plus the position of the National Fire Chiefs Council on automatic fire alarms in commercial buildings. It will not apply to sleeping risk premises

like universities, hotels, hospitals or high rise flats though – with fire engines still being automatically turned out to automatic alarms at those premises. Fire officers say businesses need to check their alarm systems are working properly to prepare for the change.

Area Manager Andy Strelczenie said: “False alarms make up a massive proportion of the incidents firefighters are mobilised to. Whilst we will always attend incidents when our services are definitely required, our frequent attendance at false alarms disrupts training and increases road risk to firefighters rushing on blue lights to incidents which later turn out to be false alarms. “It’s long been the responsibility of businesses to ensure their alarm systems are regularly checked and maintained properly and it’s important they do this before the change we’ve outlined comes into force.” The change will come into force from 6 January 2020.

FOCUS ON “You don’t need to be technical to have a successful career in the technology industry.” Not the first words you might expect to hear if you’re considering a career move into new fields. Time was, you studied at school, got your qualification and went into the job/industry you were qualified for. End of. But CT managing director Ian Snow makes a convincing case for transferable skills, as indeed do many of the region’s businesses. And for good reason, it turns out. “Recruitment is high on our agenda,” says Ian. “We are winning some great new business and need to ensure we have the right team in place to meet the demands of all our customers. But to attract the right people, we need to change the way we talk about technology. “The tech industry impacts everyone. It now sits behind almost every other industry that there is. Tech companies are our biggest hospitality and travel companies (think Uber and AirBnB), retailers (Amazon), communications companies (Apple) and information companies (Google). Working in the industry is incredibly exciting and rewarding, but many, wrongly, feel they do not have the right skills to be part of that revolution.

It guards against narrow-mindedness and importantly helps us as a business to be more competitive attracting talent that might otherwise go elsewhere.” Guest blogger for CT Emma Sinden is co-founder and director of 10 Digital Ladies community. Employing a developer can be quite expensive. If employers look at people with different skills sets in different departments, say for example in admin or tele-sales, they can train and upskill those people and have them move departments, a much more cost-effective way of plugging those gaps. “Equally it’s a great way for employees to grow and develop, too. They’ll see your company as a better place to work – they are not going to stagnate in the same position, are being encouraged to progress and are more likely

to stay with you longer-term rather than seeking new opportunities elsewhere. “With The Developer Academy I decided to find a way of retraining people wanting tech skills who already live and work in Sheffield around their jobs. The current choices are online courses which have very high drop-out rates or a full-time boot-camp which means quitting your job, costs £6,000, lasts 12 weeks and the only coding you’ll learn is JavaScript. “Our programme is an affordable monthly fee which means people can study online in the evenings or weekend. We also offer group sessions in the evenings and weekends too which they can attend as many or as few of as suits. “We talk to local employers to find out the skills they need and they tell us creative

thinking, problem-solving, effective communication and so on. We encourage people to bring their existing skills and transfer them into digital and coding skills. We understand what the market wants and help fill this employment gap.” As well as a Sheffield City Council programme, and women only and autismfriendly courses, The Developer Academy is also working with the Sheffield City Region Skills Bank, enabling SCR employers to claim up to 70 per cent towards the cost of training. And it’s not just the tech industry where transferable skills are being put to good use to the benefit of both employer and employee. THE MULTI-SKILLED TEAM AT JENX

Director Holly Jenkins is full of examples of staff whose transferable skills have been put to better use across the company. “Maddie joined us as a team leader in our customer service team in 2014 having worked in a general office role for Sheffield City Council. She’d done some really good work for us and then came to us after seeing an increase in customers talking about purchasing requirements and tenders which hadn’t been an important part of the business until then. She put forward a case for an account manager role in that area and took the way we were working to a different level. Today she is our national commissioning manager and has been fantastic. “Alex joined us from school aged 17 and worked her way up in customer service before

taking a secondment to the sales team. She enjoyed it so much she has stayed in sales and developed that, too – because of her knowledge she had in terms of our culture she identified that many businesses have an office based sales team and one that’s out on the road who are separate and has brought both closer together so we are working as one big team now.” Transferring skills isn’t a new trend at Jiraffe either – the workforce has been flexible for years, with some staff skills transferred from day one. “Joe actually applied for a customer service role and came for an interview, but we ended up offering him a job in the service team in product repairs. He developed his skills while he was out servicing. He said it had helped him understand customers’ needs and helped him answer more

complex questions. That knowledge improved our sales model, so he then applied for a sales role and has been a great addition to the sales team. “We really invest in our employees. One of our HR team joined as a junior in customer service and has worked up while a manufacturing facility supervisor started as an apprentice.” With long-service like that, staff progression is obviously key to retention – as well as recruitment. Added Holly: “We get asked about staff progression by a lot of job applicants, increasingly younger people, and it is great to be able to give them examples like Maddie, Alex and Joe. “Staff training and development is so important to us as a business – I don’t understand why every company doesn’t do the same.”

FIVE MINUTES WITH...

ZELTER SHELTER Artist, designer and entrepreneur S. Lee Price tells unLTD how he brought an idea ‘burning away at the back of my mind’ to life with Zelter – his ‘creative, progressive and helpful’ outdoor gear brand I was inspired to start my business by... For a few years I’d had this idea for a new kind of personal shelter that could also be worn like a poncho. I’d had a great time wild-camping growing up in Canada and was interested in survival gear. I made the first attempt as a student and left it. But the idea kept burning in the back of my mind. Plus beyond the wearable tent, I had a family of other bits of gear in mind and wanted to create a brand of my own as a platform for new design. I wanted a name that was Nordic-inspired, but also sounded instantly recognisable like Kleenex or Xerox. “ZELTER SHELTER” was inspired by the German for “tent” – then I abstracted a bit. My favourite thing about running my business is… Seeing people discover the product – sometimes it’s delight, sometimes bafflement! Knowing I’ve created something helpful. It’s exciting to have a creative outlet that works on so many levels. The three words that best describe my business are… Creative, progressive, helpful. Sheffield City Region is a great place to start a business because… Sheffield has a really creative atmosphere. I’m also inspired by the landscapes around us, including the Peak District. Sheffield City Region is a great place to grow a business because… Of the excellent support. The city is a great environment full

of contacts and I don’t think it would be as easy to connect elsewhere. The best advice I ever got was… A slogan on a Canadian Forces flight safety poster back in the day: ”Complacency is the Battle-Cry of the DeathMonger”. A memorable mantra and reminder to always pay attention to your surroundings, that nothing is guaranteed and usually gets a chuckle! The worst advice I ever got was… When I was young: “You’ll never make a living as an artist”. It took a few years of working various jobs to realise art and design WAS the way

I needed to live and which I’ve been doing for years now! Those experiences formed me though, so no harm done – just time spent on exploration and discovery. The organisations that have supported me and my business include… Sheffield City Region Growth Hub and RiDO – it was amazing to win the Y-Accelerator programme because, along with a prize fund from UK Steel Enterprise (UKSE), the scheme also offers an intensive development programme. Heinnie Haynes – My first big customer. Innovate UK – I’m working on some amazing developments with their support.

Evolution Power Tools – The NPD team are great. Instantprint in Rotherham – Awesome services which really gave me a boost. Begin Agency in Leeds – An excellent branding and marketing agency that helped me create the ZELTER logo and identity. In 5 years’ time I expect my business to… Have a great family of products that work as an eco-system in the fields of shelter, carry and wear. Taking advantage of new models of technology and manufacturing in the UK and North America and have facilities there, because that’s where most of my customers are.

Could an industry Placement transform your business?

LAUNCHPAD

INVICTUS SQUAD Fiona Shaw tells us how she created Invictus Squad – a ‘safe haven’ for dogs – with a little help from Launchpad

OCT1819BUM

Tell us all about your company! Invictus Squad is a bit like a youth club for dogs! We’re a business in Swinton, Rotherham that specialises in supporting owners to train their pets with a range of disciplines. We began work on a soleuse dog park in April this year after I secured land for the park and filled it with agility equipment, a rain shelter – and plenty of treats! As a dog trainer and behaviourist, I support clients whose dogs make walking difficult – some react aggressively, can’t go off their leads and have no recall skills. It’s a safe haven for their dogs. We often help people with mobility issues who can’t physically walk their dog – so they can sit down whilst the dog gets some exercise. When did you first decide to start up on your own and what inspired you? I was already a dog trainer, but spied a gap in the market after I realised there wasn’t any secure space for the dogs to practice their training. I was giving people the tools to further their dogs’ progress, but they didn’t have the right area to be able to do that, and I felt like I wasn’t helping them as much as I could’ve been. Initially, the park was only open to my clients, but as word spread, we opened it to the public. We began hosting Socialisation Saturdays, aimed towards friendlier dogs and puppies with limited social interaction. The park caters to various classes and sizes as it’s important for some breeds to stay social.

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

is a low-impact agility sport designed for larger dogs. The next big thing is to start a team and start training, eventually entering competitions. I’d love to start home boarding, particularly for larger breeds. Most registered kennels only accommodate small dogs and I’d love to fill that niche.

FIONA SHAW FROM INVICTUS SQUAD

How has Launchpad helped you? Launchpad helped me to successfully apply for a UKSE Kickstart Grant to develop the business, but I also found the ongoing support equally beneficial. I’m much more of a dog person than a people person! And I had exact ideas about what I wanted for them, so I found the marketing workshops helped to really put my ideas into play for the business. What do you think of the Sheffield City Region as a place to start a business? With schemes like Launchpad

available, I saw my business grow from an idea to reality – starting up on your own is daunting but they really helped to provide me with the right training to put me on the right track. We’ve had some great feedback from clients as well, especially because there’s nowhere in Rotherham like it. What are your hope and aims for the business? I’m hoping to expand Invictus Squad in the future, by branching out into other areas, and accommodating larger breeds. I’ve also recently qualified as a Hoopers instructor, which

Launchpad advisor Darren McDool said: “With a clear idea of who her customers are and what they are looking for, Fiona has put together a great offer for local dog owners. “During our discussions it soon became clear that she had a fantastic depth of experience over a number of years working with dogs and their owners on behavioural issues. This knowledge and experience coupled with her obvious passion for animal welfare and the brilliant facility she now has give her every chance of building something special. “Starting and growing a business is not easy and that’s why the Launchpad programme was created. Part funded by the European Regional Development Fund and our partners means there is no cost to the entrepreneur, so we can get straight to work on turning those dreams into reality. “Stop dreaming and do it. ‘THREE-PILLAR APPROACH’ TO PROPERTY PAYS OFF Wesly Jay, group operations director at Keystone Property Group, tells unLTD all about the ‘real potential’ in Sheffield for residential developments for young professionals In a world of low returns – where passive funds do no better than the market and active managers do so less often than they think – Keystone Property Group’s three-pillar (track record, security, high-return) innovative approach to property development, financing and investment alternatives are extremely attractive. I proudly boast that Keystone’s best opportunities have recorded way above a typical investments’ return – and so they should as investors enter capital at developer level and enjoy the rewards! By sticking to our model, we’ve delivered quality investments awarding investors a remarkable average 20.7 per cent annual return since 2016. This year alone work began on several development sites, a ninth joint venture site acquisition, plus a major sale to Invesco! To date, we have achieved seven private rental sector exits, launched our flexible quarterly income investment, and formed new partnerships with additional big-name firms. Best of all our clients have seen a cumulative return of more than 60 per cent. Heading into 2020, we have two new investments with leading UK award-winning developers, both offering something rarely found on the investment market. First, a monthly income bond paying monthly interest over three to five years – perfect for investors seeking an alternative to property ownership, yet who

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

WESLY JAY, GROUP OPERATIONS DIRECTOR AT KEYSTONE PROPERTY GROUP

still want a regular stream of income. The second is a golden opportunity for those striving to gain a foothold in London, whereby, investors enter one of the UK’s most lucrative markets at a much lower cost than traditional property investment, and earn a minimum 10 per cent yearly. Returning to 2019, investors exited a popular project, comprising several developments across South Yorkshire. So, in the near future, we’re looking to acquire a site in the Sheffield City Region. There’s real

potential in Sheffield for residential developments that provide young professionals with modern, attractive accommodation which will provide mid to long term investment opportunities. Attercliffe, especially, is an area with room for fantastic developments and redevelopments. As new businesses bring people to the area, it offers similar possibilities to Kelham Island and could become a new vibrant, creative district in the city. Over the next decade, we expect more high-quality

homes which embolden the city’s rich heritage to pop up. I reckon our innovations have served so well, that others are aping them. Keystone’s early-mover advantage positions it well for an industry-wide period of growth. Earlier this year, Morgan Stanley forecast that alternative property and property investments will rise from 7 per cent of all assets to 9 per cent by 2023. With a strong market and high demand for quality alternative opportunities, we can’t wait for what the ’20s have in store.

BOLDNEWAMBITIONS Weston Park Cancer Charity CEO Samantha Dixon tells unLTD all about the charity’s ‘bold five-year ambition’ What’s changing? Weston Park Cancer Charity has launched a new brand identity, along with a bold five-year ambition to support more patients and families than ever. The new brand also brings together the charity and the cancer support centre (who we merged with last year), where many of the charity’s support services are delivered. Why change? It’s really about uniting us all – the charity, support centre and the hospital. Everything we do, from supporting patients, to funding lifesaving research or equipment is a joined-up effort to help everyone live the best possible life with and beyond cancer. We are all in it together when it comes to helping patients, so it makes sense for our brand to unite us too. The closer we work together

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

Every year Weston Park Cancer Charity raises more than £2 million just to keep going. It’s thanks to fundraisers and donors that we can deliver three key strands of work: • We enable research – funding vital research and clinical trials that are saving lives; • We provide support – in many forms, from group activities and social events to benefits advice, pamper sessions to a friendly chat, for patients, their families and even to hospital staff and volunteers, both at our support centre in the community; • We enhance treatment – by improving facilities, making wards look and feel better and offering complementary therapies like massage, to help patients feel better. That’s how we achieve our overarching goal, to actively care in every sense for the patient and the people around them. the more we can raise and the further that funding can reach. What do you hope to achieve? Being there at every step means finding new ways to reach and help anyone touched by cancer. Over the next years, the charity’s

strategic plan includes directly helping a total of 47,000 cancer patients and relatives – that’s an increase of more than 50 per cent on current numbers. Why the increase? One in two of us will develop

cancer, so it’s fair to assume we will all be affected directly or indirectly by cancer in our lifetimes. We serve more than 1.3 million people, so that’s a lot of support, care, treatment and help our charity has to be ready to deliver. How will you achieve this? It’s a serious joint effort, made possible by the whole Weston Park family – hospital, support centre, charity staff and volunteers, our tireless fundraisers donors and supporters, as well as every patient, family member and friend we’ve helped. For one in two of us, cancer will become a reality. You can help us be ready for anyone who needs us. Go to westonpark.org.uk to see how you can get involved and help us to be there at every step.

SHEFFIELD CITY REGION

MAYOR LEADS THE WAY TO GROW THE NORTHERN FOREST By Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis As the world faces an unprecedented climate emergency, we all have a responsibility to do all we can to safeguard our environment for future generations. That’s why I’ve made it a priority to grow the Northern Forest, which will see 50 million trees planted over the next 25 years across the North. After working to gain the support of 120 cross-party northern Council Leaders, Metro Mayors and MPs, we’ve written to the Prime Minister, calling for him to commit to this inspiring, ambitious, and hugely important project. The significant number of signatures gathered illustrates just how much collective support there is for the Northern Forest, from people across the political spectrum. Over the next 25 years, the Woodland Trust and

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

their partners plan to grow a forest spanning 120 miles, connecting Liverpool, Manchester and Lancaster in the West with Sheffield, Leeds and Hull in the East. Currently, only 7.6 per cent of the North of England is covered by woodland, which is considerably lower than the 10 per cent national average. This new woodland will absorb up to 7.5million tonnes of carbon, while generating £2.5 billion in social, economic and environmental benefits, by reducing the risk of flooding and creating thousands of new jobs in sectors such as the environment, forestry and leisure industries. Improving the environment also brings direct, positive benefits to the economy and drives prosperity. That’s because an attractive, clean and green environment is one that more people want to

invest in, live in and grow their businesses in. We’ve seen that in places such as St Helens in Merseyside, where the former colliery site of Bold Moss was transformed into community woodland alongside nearly 600 new homes. Property values in the area rose by £15m as a direct result, and new development worth £75m was attracted to the area. That’s just a snapshot of the sort of growth we could see across the whole of North. In our letter to the Prime Minister I’ve asked for his commitment to deliver the Northern Forest and also consider other measures that this Government could take, such as offsetting the environmental impact of planned infrastructure projects. I have also extended an invitation to the Prime Minister for him to visit the North and plant a tree – so

he can be part of growing the forest himself. This will be just the start. Over the course of my Mayoralty, I want to see a million trees planted in the Sheffield City Region, underlining our major role in creating this new Northern Forest. Key to this success are residents, communities and businesses playing their part. Businesses can become an official partner for the Northern Forest, can provide volunteers to plant trees, and can also take part in the Woodland Trust’s Big Climate Fightback event on 30 November, on which more than a million people will plant a tree. Together, we can make our region a cleaner, greener place for people to live, work and invest. Visit: www.woodlandtrust. org.uk for more details on how to get involved.

NOWTHEN CLEANERS Hugo Russell, director of NowThen Cleaners, tells us how pleased he and his ‘fantastic’ staff are that their ‘quality, reliable, modern’ business has been shortlisted in the Sheffield Business Awards I was inspired to enter the Sheffield Business Awards because… Since launching in 2015 NowThen Cleaners have organically grown year on year, but in the past year growth has really taken off. I felt our fantastic staff and the company deserve the accolade of having a prestigious Sheffield Business Award. Therefore, I put our hat in the ring for this year's High Growth Business of the year award, and was delighted to have been shortlisted. We are all really looking forward to attending our first Sheffield Business Awards. Being shortlisted in the Sheffield Business Awards is important to me because… Being shortlisted shows how far NowThen Cleaners has come in the last four years. Launched with £200 and a laptop from my corporate job in London, I would never have envisaged having 50 staff and monthly revenues this year surpassing £50K. My favourite thing about running my business is…. Working with such a brilliant team of hard-working cleaners. Cleaning is hard manual work, so to have a team that love coming to work and go the extra mile means the world to me. The three words that best describe my business are…. Quality, reliable, modern. Sheffield City Region is a great place to grow a business because… Everyone is friendly and has a sense of humour! clients, staff and suppliers alike. There is also a tonne of business support on offer in Sheffield, which helps you through those testing few years. In addition to this we are able to operate across a broad sector range as Sheffield City Region has a very diverse set of businesses. The organisations that have supported me and my business include… Wosskow Brown Foundation – Provided incubation space in our first year and ongoing

business mentorship with Jim Lawson. Business Sheffield – Found their courses very useful and still to this day our office team learn from them. University of Sheffield – Attended IBIS growth course. Sheffield Chamber of Commerce. In 5 years’ time I expect my business to… Expand greatly our client base, service offering, and geographical reach all while

maintaining the quality and reliability that has underpinned our early successes. I expect we will have moved from a small sized business to a medium sized business with a team well above 100 employees. We also hope to continue to build strong working relationships with more excellent Sheffield businesses. NowThen Cleaners are in a great position being able to learn about our clients and support the day-to-day running of their businesses through our cleaning management.

ACTIVE TRAVEL

BETTER BY BIKE Despite the colder, darker nights, Travel South Yorkshire's Sustainable Travel team are shining a light on why the region’s workforces should switch from four wheels to two. Sasha Mossman found out why the benefits of cycling ‘override any seasonal disadvantages’

As the weather gets colder and the nights get darker, Travel South Yorkshire’s Active and Sustainable Travel team can see why switching to cycling can initially appear offputting. But the team’s involvement in the region-wide programme of support for potential and existing cyclists proves there’s no better time to make the leap – and switch from four wheels to two. The Active and Sustainable Travel team have begun signposting people to bicycle

training sessions available to everyone – from the novice rider through to the more confident cyclist who wants to become more advanced – on offer across South Yorkshire, with bikes provided at many of these sessions. Marketing Manager Richard Pilgrim said: “There’s a lot of support for getting on to a bicycle – whether it’s for leisure or commuting – and a lot of these services can be accessed for free, thanks to support provided through the Department for Transport’s

Sustainable Travel Access Fund (STAF).” A key player in the drive to get the city cycling is Sheffield CycleBoost – a partnership between Sheffield City Council, ReCycle Bikes and Pedal Ready - a bike loan and cycle training programme designed to promote active travel to businesses in the region. The work done to get more people cycling isn’t just limited to Sheffield either – Barnsley has a designated Active Travel HUB located at Barnsley Interchange, providing services

such as regular and electric bike loans, cycle repairs and parking and a regular walking group. Similarly, Rotherham also has a mobile cycling HUB labelled Journey Matters, which is responsible for loans, repairs and parking as well as public and business events designed to provide advice for budding cyclists. The scheme in Doncaster, which aims to give potential cyclists a ‘push’ into making the first step, has opened a 1km long, 6m wide cycle track at the Dome.

GETTING INTO GEAR Here some of the scheme’s beneficiaries tell us why it’s better by bike. Rebecca Mews, Marketing and Digital Officer, SYPTE, Sheffield Becca first developed a taste for cycling in February 2018 after attending a cycle training session with training providers Pedal Ready, where she learned skills to reduce hazards and improve safety. Following a summer trip to France filled with cycling, the opportunity arose to loan an electric bike through Sheffield CycleBoost. After this, she switched her usual commute – using Park and Ride and Tram services – and instantly caught the cycling bug! “My 2.6 mile commute to the office has now been cut down by over half the time. I’ve started to feel refreshed and alert arriving to work, plus I’ve gained lots of additional time in the mornings and after work”. “I’m a strong advocate of cycling as a way of commuting and genuinely can’t see myself traveling in any other way.” Nicole Nation, Pedal Ready learner

REBECCA MEWS REGULARLY CYCLES TO AND FROM WORK

Richard said: “Beginning your journey into cycling in winter might sound ridiculous – darker nights and increased congestion are never appealing on a commute. However, the facilities offered in South Yorkshire for would-be cyclists far override any seasonal disadvantages. “For many, cycling at night has never been easier – with ongoing support from the scheme, including the opportunity to use lights and high-viz.” Earlier this year, Travel South

Yorkshire undertook an ‘active travel’ survey in order to scope out the region’s attitudes to walking, cycling and public transport. Almost 1,000 members of the public took part, and the results showed that 49 per cent of people would consider cycling instead of doing short journeys – less than two miles – by car. Additionally, 53 per cent of people surveyed felt confident in their cycling ability, and 35 per cent said they would cycle more if they could borrow or hire a suitable bike.

At the start of this year, Nicole had never learned to cycle. Six months later and she’s taken part in three cycling events and is training for her biggest challenge yet. Whilst at university, Nicole saw free cycling classes advertised and decided to give it a go. Nicole is now so confident in her abilities that she regularly rides once a week with Pedal Ready and has taken part in three British Cycling events by herself. For Nicole, there was a defining moment when she felt she had finally conquered her fear. “Riding for the first time through the city of Sheffield. It may seem trivial to some, however, as a student I was so used to walking the route to town. When I realised that I was actually doing it and cycling my way into town it was definitely a lightbulb moment for me.” Louise Treloar, Communications Coordinator, Grimm & Co Apothecary, Rotherham Louise was tired of the drive and frustrated by traffic particularly on the way home. Although not an inexperienced cyclist, she eventually decided to take up an e-bike loan through Journey Matters, using their cycling ‘buddy scheme’ on her first trip home and subsequently seeking their assistance with maintenance on the bike. She’s now averaging 80 bike miles a week and commutes by bike every day she can. As winter approached, Louise spoke to the Cycle Hub who provided her with some extra lights for her e-bike and she has also used the Journey Matters Mobile HUB to repair a slow puncture. “The change has impacted positively in lots of ways – the quality of my journey is so much better.” “Anyone considering making a change should take the plunge.”

DON'T STAY HO-HO-HOME

THIS CHRISTMAS! Christmas is just around the corner and South Yorkshire is home to hundreds of independent businesses and big-name brands offering something slightly different to your usual festive fare. Whether it’s gifts, food and drink or events you’re looking for this winter, unLTD’s Sasha Mossman has got you covered

ATKINSONS Approaching their 148th year in business, Atkinsons is no stranger to pulling out all the stops at Christmas – and this year will be no different. The legendary family-owned department store will be showcasing several events this year in association with their chosen charity Weston Park Cancer Charity. If you’ve walked past the store’s window display recently, you would’ve noticed the #InspiredBySheffield display – as a part of the campaign of the same name – designed by Atkinsons to push local independent businesses. Businesses featured include Kelham Print, Natural Stone Carved Creations, Goo Design and Frazer’s Coffee, and the display continues the campaign on from the inaugural #InspiredBySheffield day back in October. For the past two years, Atkinsons has successfully been putting on a ‘Breakfast with Santa’ event, taking place on 15 December this year. Children and their families are invited to have breakfast at the Atkinsons restaurant and meet Father Christmas and receive a selection box and a gift for £15 – £5 of which is donated to

70

Weston Park, who also provide the Santa Claus. David Cartwright, store manager at Atkinsons, said: “We try to keep the numbers small for the event, as it allows each child to have a personalised experience – such as last year, when a deaf child took part and Father Christmas learnt sign language so that he could wish him a Merry Christmas.” As a part of the Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trail,

Atkinsons will be participating as the gateway event in remembrance of the destruction of the store in World War Two. At the event on 10 December, author Neil Anderson will be unveiling the trail, which will be accessible via interpretation boards, phone app, website and a book. Britain’s Got Talent stars D-Day Darlings will be performing and the book – ‘Countdown to the Sheffield

Blitz’ – which has been compiled by Neil Anderson – will go on sale at the event. The guest of honour, however, will be an 80-year old teddy bear that was the last item to be bought from Atkinsons before it was bombed. David added: “It’ll be a nice, feel-good family event. As a family-owned business, we believe in a traditional, more family-focused Christmas, so we’re trying to make the store as family-friendly as we can.”

FRENCHGATE SHOPPING CENTRE Doncaster's Frenchgate will be continuing their wildly successful #FrenchgateShareYourHappy campaign through the winter months, with plenty on offer for families. Starting on 9 November, Santa’s Woodland Workshop Grotto will be open until Christmas Eve – with special Autism Friendly hour sessions available every Tuesday morning between 10-11am.

The Grinch will also be making his Doncaster debut this Christmas. Space outside Debenhams will be transformed into the Frenchville Post Office on 9 November. At the Frenchville Post Office, children can write their three good deeds on a postcard and grow their hearts three times – just like The Grinch! The postcards will then be entered into an hourly draw to win a prize.

WILDWOOD Although a slightly newer addition to the scene, forestthemed artisan gift and coffee shop Wildwood pride themselves on being able to offer a more unique variety of gifts to Sheffield shoppers. Boasting a huge seasonal range including candles, décor, gifts and toiletries, Wildwood aim to put a distinctive ‘al-fresco’ twist on the usual Christmas offering. As a local company, the business also offers a special Sheffield-themed festive collection, including baubles and various decorations. Returning favourites include last year’s bestselling ceramic dome tealights and Christmas trees – keeping in line with the outdoors theme! Coowner Lindsay Lonchar said: “Wildwood is only just a year old, but we’ve already realised

that the winter is our busiest time of year. Some of our products have already been so in demand that we’ve had to stock extra in preparation!” As an independent retailer on The Moor, Wildwood has been a part of the Just A Card campaign, which aims to support smaller businesses and artists. The campaign follows the idea that if everyone who visited independent galleries bought ‘just a card’, then most would stay open for longer. Lindsay said: “Even though we’re approaching our second year, we still get a lot of people discovering us for the first time. We’re passionate about supporting the local independent high street so it can stay busy all year long – not just at Christmas!”

THE ANGELS ARE COMING Kicking off more family friendly festivities in the city centre, The Angels are Coming will take place at Sheffield Cathedral between 4-8 December. A dazzling sound and light show telling the story of Christmas will be displayed onto the Cathedral’s exterior between 6 and 10pm each night, whilst the inside of the building

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

will be transformed into the Nativity scene – complete with carols, artwork and a spectacular centrepiece. The Angels are Coming was brought to Sheffield by an artistic collaboration called ‘Luxmuralis’ (which means 'Light Murals’) – whose work has been seen all over the UK and across Europe.

THE SHEFFIELD CANDLE COMPANY Although The Sheffield Candle Company is a seasonal business, work takes place all year round. In preparation for Christmas, the team begin manufacturing festive products in August. Each product is handmade, as the team hand wick, hand pour and hand label all the products – meaning months of groundwork. The products are then put into storage until they are required. During the winter months, The Sheffield Candle Company release a range of seasonal fragrances, which include Christmas Pine & Spices, Sweet Amaretto Nog, Christmas Kitchen and Frankincense & Myrrh. James McKennan, Managing Director of The Sheffield Candle Company, said: “The winter months are great fun for us at markets as we are out getting to meet the people who have used our candles.” Business at the company

We offer a discount on all of our candles if you purchase two of any size of candle.” The Sheffield Candle Company is also currently working on a project with two other local businesses: Bailey of Sheffield who design, manufacture and build stainless steel jewellery is in Sheffield and Locksley Distilling Co, famous for their green bottled Sir Robin of Locksley Gin. The three businesses are working

The winter months are great fun for us at markets as we are out getting to meet the people who have used our candles. We're very busy, the days are

long but it is all worth it. “We have a great team who I am very lucky to be working alongside and I can't wait to be chatting to everyone at the Christmas markets with a hot chocolate in hand. AFTER HOURS It’s the perfect getaway and it’s right on the doorstep of Sheffield. Inspired and lovingly renovated by a Duchess, Moscar Lodge at Hollow Meadows sees the return of the aristocratic Manners family to Peak District moors where the city’s golden frame sparkles. The Lodge, an ideal location for a family, holiday or corporate retreat, is tucked

away down a country lane close to Ladybower Reservoir and Bamford. “I have put my stamp on it but not changed it enormously, we are simply the custodians,” said Emma Manners, the Duchess of Rutland. “It just happened to come our way four years ago and ownership means we get our roots back into north Derbyshire again alongside the

likes of Haddon Hall.” Born Emma Watkins and the daughter of a Welsh farmer, the Duchess trained as an opera singer, interior designer and estate agent later marrying David Manners, then the Marquis of Granby, in 1992. Seven years later, David inherited Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire and, with it, the title of the 11th Duke of Rutland.

“Moscar was a great project for me,” said the Duchess. “I am a designer by trade. I collect, always looking out for items. I have an eclectic collection of artefact from sales and auctions. “My personal highlight in the Lodge is the piano…I love music. But there is also the dining table from a New York show. I bought it and had it shipped across here.
