BUCHANAN RENOVATION Originally dubbed the UNLV Natatorium, the school’s swimming pool was built in 1974 and opened for use in 1975. The natatorium boasts a 50-meter indoor pool with two bulk heads, and has seating for 1,200. The pool has a 733,000-gallon capacity. A full record board was added to the walls of the facility for the 2006-07 season, while a new timing system and results scoreboard was installed prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. Following the end of the 2008-09 season, the natatorium underwent a complete and total renovation from the walls in. The renovation, which is set to be completed in December of 2009, includes the following • New pool • New pool deck • New diving boards • New bulkhead • New drainage and plumbing system Other changes made to the facility included changing the pool itself from aluminium to concrete, and the shallow end was changed from four feet to eight feet deep, giving the option to use both ends of the pool for competition at the same time.
Named after former Nevada System Board of Regent James L. “Bucky” Buchanan II in 1980, the Buchanan Natatorium was officially dedicated on June 12, 1981. The former regent was an avid swimmer and supporter of UNLV athletics until his passing in the fall of 2009. Buchanan Natatorium has hosted and continues to host several major meets. The Western Athletic and West Coast conferences have held their annual championships at the facility. In addition, the swimming portion of the US Olympic Sports Festival brought the likes of Olympic Gold Medalists Matt Biondi, Janet Evans and Pablo Morales to the Buchanan Natatorium in 1987. In 1999 at the 15th annual Winter Invite, Natalie Coughlin broke an American record in the 100 back. The Big West Conference (then known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) held its annual men’s and women’s championships at the pool in 1985, and the women’s meet only in 1984 and ’86. The UNLV men’s water polo team, coached by Wes Mock, called the pool home from 1976-80. The natatorium is located adjacent to the men’s and women’s locker rooms within the Paul D. McDermott Physical Education Complex on the UNLV campus.

HEAD COACH JIM REITZ JIM REITZ Head Swim Coach 30th Season Washington ‘75
Jim Reitz begins his 30th season as UNLV head coach, but shows no signs of slowing down as the past five years have been the most successful stretch in the history of the Rebel swimming and diving program. Thanks to a dominating conference championship performance last year by the UNLV men, Reitz has now led the UNLV men’s squad to five straight MWC championships, which are also the first five in school history for the men’s program after several close calls in its 29-year history. Reitz also guided the UNLV women to the 2005 MWC crown to give the Rebels a sweep of the league titles that season. It was the fourth all-time conference championship for the women, as they won the Big West in 1984, 1991 and 1992. The Rebels were also runner-ups on the women’s side in the MWC championship in 2008 and 2009. The past two years at the MWC championship meet have seen complete domination by the Rebels. At the 2009 championships, the UNLV men quickly took control from the start and never looked back on the way to a 273.5-point lead over Air Force for the largest win-margin in the 10-year history
of the conference. Meanwhile, UNLV’s women came in a strong second, less than 60 points behind BYU. The Rebels set a total of 15 conference records on the way to 20 total first-place finishes. UNLV would also score at the NCAA women’s championships for the first time since 2001, placing 37th thanks to an All-America performance from Zsuzanna Jakabos, while the Rebel men earned a national ranking for the first time at the end of the season, and were a false start away from having their 200 free relay earn All-America status. UNLV would send a total of six men to the NCAA championships, and two on the women’s side. And for the second straight year, UNLV swept the Swimmer of the Year awards, with Kier Maitland claiming the men’s while Jakabos was honored on the women’s side. 2007-08 was just as impressive a season for the Rebels, as the UNLV men entered the league meet expecting to face a big fight in the quest to defend their title, but instead cruised to the championship with a 157.5-point margin over second place BYU. The UNLV women meanwhile earned a runner-up finish. Even more impressive, the teams combined to win 24 events, and set eight new conference records while posting 16 new UNLV marks. UNLV also swept the Swimmer of the Year and Senior Recognition awards. Following the meet, Kim Bonney represented the women’s team at the NCAA Championships, while UNLV sent five swimmers to the NCAA Men’s Championships. Reitz also saw two of his seniors from the 2007-08 squad swim for their respective country in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Jonas Andersson (Sweden) and Richard Hortness (Canada), while Rebel alum Joe Bartoch also competed for Canada. The five-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year (1984, 1991 and 1994 women’s, 1987 and 1996 men’s) and

JIM REITZ seven-time MWC Coach of the Year (2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 men’s, 2005 women’s) has taken programs that were non-existent and built them into consistent winners. Surrounded by talented assistant coaches, Reitz and his staff are devoted to the goal of becoming a program that battles for a place in the top 25 on a yearly basis. He emphasizes consistency and intensity during training. Both the men’s and women’s programs have produced numerous All-Americans while rising to national prominence and consistently scoring at the NCAA Championships under Reitz. In his 29 years at UNLV, Reitz has taken swimmers to the NCAA Men’s Championships 14 times, including seven as members of the Mountain West. The team’s best-ever finish at the national meet was in 1990, when UNLV finished 22nd with 26 points, thanks to Bart Pippenger’s top-10 swims in the 100 and 200 fly. UNLV has sent swimmers to the women’s championships six times, with its best finish coming in 1986 when Sally Fleisher earned All-America honors in the 50 free and scored in two more events to help UNLV place 24th with 34 points. In addition, Reitz has sent several swimmers to represent the U.S. National Team, as well as numerous Rebels that have gone on to swim for their native countries in the Olympic Games, World Championships, Pan Pacific Games and the World University Games. Reitz expects the same consistency and intensity from his students-athletes in the classroom as he does in the pool. Year-in and year-out, the Rebels have had the majority of their swimmers named to the Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team. The Rebels have also earned national recognition for their academic standards, as eight swimmers have won CoSIDA Academic All-District honors over the past four seasons, while Kim Bonney was a second team Academic AllAmerican in 2007-08. A native of Seattle, Wash., Reitz coached 15 years before coming to UNLV. He coached at both Cascade and Seattle Swim clubs and was head of the physical education departments at Shorewood High School in Seattle. Reitz moved to Las Vegas in 1976 and began coaching the Sandpiper Swim Team before taking over the reigns of the Rebel programs in 1980. Reitz earned bachelor’s degrees in physical education and psychology from the University of Washington in 1975. He and his wife, Nina, have two children, Emily (28) and Ben (25).

“JUST GO OFF” On Jan. 21, 1993, Brian Fischer, a distance freestyler on the men’s team from 1991-93, died in a fire and explosion in his apartment. A tenacious competitor with a great work ethic, Fischer had a saying that became the rallying cry of the team for the remainder of that season. His big phrase prior to a race was “just go off.” The 1992-93 team did as Fischer would have wished by moving forward and remembering how he lived life to the fullest. The rallying cry will never be forgotten as it has been inscribed on a banner which hangs in the natatorium.

BIRTH OF A CONFERENCE The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions - Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming - decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. TCU began its first year of competition in 2005-06, completing the membership in the MWC as it stands today. THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springsbased league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC’s newest member, TCU. ACHIEVEMENTS MWC members have participated in 36 bowl games in 10 years with eight of the nine schools going to at least one postseason event. The MWC has earned 45 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, while women’s basketball has tallied 27 NCAA bids, four Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. The MWC has sent at least 30 teams to NCAA postseason events each of the past 10 years while capturing seven NCAA team championships during that span.

YEAR IN REVIEW The MWC celebrated its 10th Anniversary in style, beginning in football in which the conference sent five teams to bowl games for the second consecutive year. Three MWC football teams finished the season in final top 25 polls, including two in the top 10, for the first time in league history. Utah’s No. 2 and TCU’s No. 7 ranking in the final polls marked the first time two teams from non-automatic-qualifying conferences have been ranked in the top 10 since 1984. Utah, BYU and New Mexico shared the league’s regular-season crown in men’s basketball. Overall, the league sent six teams into postseason action for the third time in 10 years. In women’s basketball, San Diego State and Utah shared the MWC regular-season title, and overall, the league had four teams participate in postseason action. Colorado State joined MWC volleyball regular-season champion Utah in the postseason, while BYU represented the league in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament. UNLV represented the MWC in the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, while UNLV and BYU provided participants on the women’s side in NCAA postseason action, which was highlighted by UNLV freshman Zsuzanna Jakabos’ AllAmerican performance in the 400-yard IM. Five MWC men’s golf teams were invited to the 2009 NCAA Regionals for the ninth time in the last 10 years. Three MWC women’s golf teams received Regional bids, with New Mexico and TCU advancing to the 2009 NCAA Championships. Multiple MWC women’s tennis teams appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth consecutive year. The league sent SDSU, UNLV and BYU to the NCAA Softball Tournament, the sixth time in 10 years the league had multiple teams selected. A record-breaking three teams represented the conference in the NCAA Baseball Championship, while San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg, became the MWC’s first No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball Draft. UNLV MWC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2008-09 • Men’s Swimming & Diving Regular Season • Men’s Swimming & Diving Tournament • Women’s Tennis Regular Season

REBEL SWIMMING HISTORY
REBEL ALUMNI Having attended UNLV and been part of the Rebel swimming and diving programs, many student-athletes have gone on to enjoy further success both in and out of the pool. The following is a list of just a few successful UNLV alumni: Bart Pippenger, a four-time All-American, went on to capture the gold medal in the 200 butterfly at the 1990 World Championships and the silver medal in the 200 fly at the Goodwill Games. Mike Mintenko broke the Canadian record in the 100 fly and took fifth place in the 100 fly and 800 free relay at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney. Vaune Kadlubek helped establish the women’s program back in the late 1970s. She went on to serve as an assistant coach for the Rebels and the head coach of the U.S. women’s water polo team. Most recently, the Rebel men’s program saw three of its members compete in the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing. Jonas Andersson swam for his native Sweden country, Bart Pippenger while Joe Bartoch and Richard Hortness both competed 1986-90 Mike Mintenko for Canada. Bartoch was also a member of the Canadian 1995-98 4x100m Medley Relay that set a world record at the British Gas Grand Prix in England in August of 2009.

THE UNIVERSITY
UNLV CAMPUS FACTS
C
ombining the excitement of an urban location with the charm of a traditional campus, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers students a full educational and social experience. Just decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excellence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a flurry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the new William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientific, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, offering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enrolling more than 53,000 students annually. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 138 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of more than 5,481 last year. ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JIM LIVENGOOD
B
ringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th fulltime Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Pacific-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extension on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A.
Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 199697 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Arizona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titles and the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Committee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender-equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a studentathlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Jim and his wife, Linda, have two grown children, Michelle, a lawyer in Tucson, and Jeremy, who resides in Phoenix. Both children are University of Arizona graduates. Michelle earned her law degree in May 2000 and Jeremy graduated in December 1999. LIED ATHLETIC COMPLEX
Opened in 1996, the $8.5 million Lied Athletic Complex remains one of the nation’s premier on-campus sports facilities. The Lied, honored with Athletic Management magazine’s 1997 Award of Excellence, was exclusively funded by private donations beginning with a cornerstone gift of $4 million from the Lied Foundation Trust, through its trustee Ms. Christina Hixson, in 1993. A generous $1.5 million gift from Si and Marilyn Redd provided the Lied with a state-of-the-art sports medicine center for preventative and rehabilitative care. This 8,500-square-foot center includes a doctor’s office and examination room, a taping room, an aquatic therapy room, two additional therapy and rehabilitation areas and a self-contained drug-testing facility.
The Ernie Becker Sr. Strength and Conditioning Center features 8,500 square feet of main floor containing Olympic platforms, free weights, power racks and more than 60 weight stations. Additionally, a 1,200-square-foot balcony offers areas for plyometrics, stretching and aerobics. The Lied’s 10,000-square-foot equipment center provides studentathlete support service featuring laundry, equipment and storage. The Conrad Hilton Foundation provided funding for the Barron Hilton Auditorium located inside the Lied Athletic Complex. This 328-seat auditorium provides student-athletes with study hall facilities including individual meeting rooms for tutorial support and team meetings. Designed with all Rebel sports in mind, the Lied Athletic Complex offers every student-athlete the best possible environment to pursue their athletic and academic dreams.
THE HONORARY LETTERMEN’S WALL
The Lettermen’s Wall stands as a permanent tribute to those men and women of vision who, through their generosity, have enhanced the lives and experiences of UNLV student-athletes through their contributions to the construction of the Lied Athletic Complex. The wall transforms a male and female UNLV student-athlete into beautiful etched images on polished crystal plaques.

No less than three national championships were celebrated as part of last fall’s UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame ceremonies held on Sept. 19, 2008. Five former Rebel players (including the 17th football honoree all-time), one longtime head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams in being inducted. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletic Hall of Fame will now grow to 96 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former studentathletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. TIM BLENKIRON (1994-97) was one of the best doubles players in school history and paired up with Luke Smith to win the 1997 NCAA Doubles Championship, becoming one of six individual national champions at UNLV. The 1997 All-American was a member of three Big West Conference champion squads. JOE KRISTOSIK (1995-98) was UNLV football’s first consensus first team All-American after being a four-year starter as a punter for the Rebels. He turned in one of the best seasons at his position in college football history as a senior in 1998 while leading the nation with an average of 46.2, which was the second-highest in NCAA history for a punter with at least 75 attempts.
