PALATIAL SOCCER COMPLEX
PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl AllStar Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inauguaral contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of
4
2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. In 2004, the UNLV men’s soccer team posted its 125th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the second to last game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 27th season in 2009.

Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV men’s soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Bernie Chavies. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and Bernie Chavies Soccer bracing all take place in another all-inclusive Athletic Trainer room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. The 2009 UNLV men’s soccer season marks the 35th year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Las Vegas native on the team. Senior defender Andrew Friel of Durango High School in Las Vegas is this year’s scholarship recipient. He is the son of James and Kim Friel. Since 1974, the UNLV men’s soccer program has been quite fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johann and his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns’ son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johanns decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. In return for their generosity, UNLV’s first-ever on-campus soccer field was dedicated to the memory of Peter Johann when it was built on the north side of the campus in 1983. The Rebels have called Peter Johann Memorial Field home for the past 26 years.

MARIO SANCHEZ HEAD COACH FOURTH SEASON ‘99 FRESNO STATE
In his three years at the helm of the Rebels, Mario Sanchez has turned around the fortunes of the men’s soccer program and has it on a solid track back to a previous level of one of the top programs in the West. Last season, UNLV got off to a 3-0 start for just the third time in school history, and Sanchez had his team ranked regionally while also receiving votes in the national top-25 polls as it stood 5-2-1 at the end of the non-conference slate. Though the Rebels had a few struggles starting with the middle of conference play, UNLV still finished at 8-9-1, the most wins since the 2002 season. Senior forward Lamar Neagle earned all-region honors, while both he and Daniel Cruz were first team All-MPSF selections. s Sanchez also saw the duo both earn e spots on MLS teams this summer, with Cruz C drafted by Houston and Neagle signed by b Seattle. The 2007 season showed everyone what kind k of coach UNLV had in Sanchez after the team suffered though a one-win season t in i 2006 in which he was only able to bring in three of his own players due b to t roster limitations. However, the offseason between his first and o second s years showed that better days d were ahead for UNLV.
14
Sanchez brought in a very talented class of 11 players, including one of the top recruits in the nation in Cruz. Sanchez’s recruiting efforts paid off immediately, as Cruz was named the MPSF Newcomer of the Year and was a third team freshman All-American, while another newcomer, Andrew Friel, was selected to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation second team. Mixing in the newcomers with the veterans, Sanchez guided the squad to a 7-10-3 mark, the most wins since 2002. UNLV also claimed an upset victory over 21st-ranked New Mexico in a 2-1 overtime victory, the program’s second win over a ranked team in Sanchez’s two seasons, and finished in a tie for fifth in the MPSF with a 3-7 league mark. Two Rebels (Cruz and Neagle) earned first team All-MPSF honors, and Sanchez was named Co-MPSF Coach of the Year for 2007. In his first season at the helm of the Rebels, Sanchez was dealt an inexperienced team that struggled at the beginning, but improved with each outing, and finished the year with a 2-0 win over 20thranked Denver. Sanchez came to Las Vegas from Akron, where he was an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program from 2003-2005. While on the Zips staff, he helped guide the program to three NCAA appearances, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, where they tied eventual national champion Maryland, which advanced in a penalty kick shootout. The Zips finished the 2005 season with an 18-1-4 record and were rankedd No. 1 in the nation for fourr straight weeks. UNLV was n o t S a n c h e z ’s first exposure to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, as he was an

assistant coach at Fresno State from 1999-2003 until the school dropped its men’s soccer program. While in Fresno, he was also a staff coach for the Olympic Development Program Region IV from 2000-2003, and was an ODP coach for the Ohio North ODP program from November of 2003 until leaving for Las Vegas. Also, in the summer of 2006, Sanchez was named head coach for the West Region 90s Boys Age Group team. He coached in an international tournament in Italy in April of 2007, and with a team that included Cruz, guided them to the semifinals of the 16-team tournament. Currently, Sanchez is in his fourth year as the head coach for the U-17 Regional ODP Team. A 1999 graduate of Fresno State with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration, Sanchez was a four-year starter and two-time captain for the Bulldogs. Playing from 1993-97, Sanchez earned All-Far West Region honors in 1995 and 1997. He played for the national champion Central Coast Roadrunners in the United Soccer League from 1996-97, and was a third round draft choice in the MLS by the Kansas City Wizards in 1998. Sanchez also played for Orange County Zodiac (1999) and Stanislaus Cruisers (2001) in the USL Professional Division. Sanchez is married to the former Shana Stickel. They have four children: sons Sebastian (5) and Santiago (1), and daughters Ella (4) and Emme (born on May 2, 2009.)

CHAD BROWN ASSISTANT COACH FOURTH SEASON ‘99 UNLV
Chad Brown is in his fourth year on the UNLV staff after spending the previous seven years as head coach for the Crossfire Premier Soccer Club. He ran two teams in the club program in Redmond, Wash., where he started as the head coach in 1999. A two-year center midfielder at Fresno State where he was a teammate of UNLV head coach Mario Sanchez, Brown was twice named All-Western Athletic Conference and led the Bulldogs in scoring in both 1997 and 1998. He began his collegiate playing career at Bellevue Community College, where he was an NWAAC All-State selection while leading it to the 1994 NWAAC Championship. He repeated that feat with Spokane Community College in 1996, leading the school to the NWAAC Championship while being named NWAAC MVP. After graduating from FSU in 1999 with a bachelor’s of arts degree in sociology, he joined the Seattle Sounders in the professional A League and helped them to the league finals in 2004-05, and to the league championship in 2005-06. While coaching the Crossfire Premier Soccer Club, Brown also owned, coordinated and ran operations for First Touch Training LLC, which were soccer training clinics in the Seattle area, from 2003-2006. He has since started running a First Touch Training in Las Vegas as well.
DAN SCHELL ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON ‘94 UNLV
Dan Schell returned to his alma mater in 2008 as a volunteer coach, and has moved up to assistant coach for this season. Prior to returning to Las Vegas, Schell spent the previous four seasons as the as the goalkeeper coach for both the Portland men’s and women’s teams. He works with the Rebel goalkeepers, and is also serving as goalkeeper coach for the Neusport soccer club in Las Vegas. During his inaugural season in charge of the Portland goalkeeper, then-sophomore Luis Robles earned third team All-Far West Region honors from the NSCAA, while on the women’s side, the Pilots posted 42 shutouts during Schell’s tenure. Schell, currently a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and the United States Soccer Federation, served as head coach of both the boys and girls teams at Chaparal High School in Las Vegas, Nev. He earned Regional Coach of the Year honors in 1998-99 after leading both his boys and girls teams to their respective Nevada State Championships. A five-time Nevada State Coach of the Year selection, three with the boys and two with the girls, Schell also guided his Alliance
16
Football Club boys team to four state titles from 1996-99. He also coached the Premier S.C. and United Boys clubs to six state championships. Schell is in his third year with the Region IV ODP program staff. In his career at UNLV (1990-94), he earned All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honorable mention as a goalkeeper in 1992. He sits in second place in all-time at UNLV in both saves and shutouts with 89 and six, respectively. His 228 career saves also ranks him third in Rebel history. A native of Portland, Ore., Schell and his wife, Victoria, are the parents of Drake (5) and Loyal (3).
RICH RYERSON VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH SECOND SEASON ‘87 UNLV
Rich Ryerson is in his second year on the UNLV staff, and first as volunteer assistant after spending the 2008 season as a full-time assistant. Ryerson was a four-year starting defender/midfielder for the Rebels from 1983-86 and led UNLV to three NCAA tournament appearances and three straight conference championships during his time in Las Vegas. In his junior season, the Rebels posted a program-best 18-2-2 mark and No. 4 final national ranking. A two-time all-region and all-conference selection, Ryerson scored 20 goals and had 20 assists. Ryerson started all 84 games during his time as a Rebel, which set school records for both most career games played and most career starts, both of which still stand. Ryerson was named one of Soccer America’s Top-10 Freshmen of the Year in 1983. Ryerson graduated from UNLV in 1987 with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration. He went on to play a total of 10 years in several professional soccer leagues, including two in Kinna, Sweden, and finished his career in 1998 with the Baton Rouge Bombers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League, where he was named the EISL’s Defensive Player of the Year. In 1994, Ryerson served as athletic director and physical education teacher for the Marywood-Palm Valley School, a K-12 program in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Currently, he is serving as Director of Coaching for the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club, and holds a “USSF” B coaching license. Rich, who resides in Henderson, is married to the former Vanes Valenzuela and they have two children,Vashti (13) and Payton (10).

After increasing the previous year’s win total in each of the past two seasons under fourth-year head coach Mario Sanchez, the UNLV men’s soccer team hopes to accomplish that feat for a third straight year, which would also result in the first winning season for the program since the 2002 season. However, when one takes a glance at the returning lineup for the Rebels, to match even last year’s record would seem to be an monumental accomplishment due to two big factors. First, UNLV is playing perhaps its toughest schedule in years, including four teams ranked in the Soccer America Preseason Top 25 (No. 9 UCLA, No. 12 Illinois-Chicago, No. 20 Cal Poly and No. 25 Denver). Second, the Rebels lost 87% of their goal-scoring offense from 2008. In fact, only one player on the 2009 squad scored last season (junior forward Stephen Sifuentes with three goals). Although he has every right to be worried entering this season without his scorers of a year ago, which included a pair of players now in the MLS who combined for 14 goals and 31 total points, Sanchez is excited and enthusiastic about the upcoming campaign. “I don’t see this year as a transition year, I see it as a year we move forward. It’s true we did lost a lot of talent from last year’s senior year class. But we feel that our underclassmen developed and learned the past few years, and are ready to take over this year, this should be the deepest team we’ve had since I’ve been here.” One of the reasons for Sanchez’s optimism is the stellar recruiting class that will be joining the Rebels this fall, one that was ranked as the second-best in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. “This is by far the best class we’ve had here in my time in Las Vegas. From top to bottom, all of them are ready to play and contribute right from the start.” Sanchez is not overlooking what UNLV will have to replace, however. “Anytime you lose half or more of your scoring from the previous year, it’s going to be a challenge to fill that void. But at the college level, you expect your seniors to be your leading scorers so it’s something we prepare for each year.” The coaching staff feels that the recent recruiting efforts have helped build the foundation that will help keep the Rebels competitive and challenging for the conference title every season. Entering 2009, UNLV will have three goals. First, to make the MPSF conference tournament, as the postseason event makes its return after a five-year absence. Six of the eight teams in the league will qualify for the tournament, and Sanchez wants to make sure the Rebels earn their spot. Second, to win its first-ever MPSF championship. And third, to reach the NCAA Tournament. To accomplish those goals, Sanchez feels the most important thing will be to solve the consistency issues the team has had the past two seasons. “We’ve shown that we can beat some of the top teams in the nation, we have wins over nationally and regionally ranked teams, but then we took a step backwards and lost games that we couldn’t afford to. Our focus this year will be on playing at a high level and competing hard every time we’re on the field.” Three players that are expected to step up and make a big impact on the field as leaders of the team are senior Sal Ornelas, junior Drew Gleason, and sophomore Nick DeLeon. “These three are the backbone of the team, they have done a good job of uniting the rest of the players and keeping them focused during training. They are ready to lead us on the field this season.”
FORWARDS Looking at the forwards, Sanchez feels this could be the most athletic group of forwards in the past four years, but at the same time they are inexperienced, with just one returnee in Sifuentes. “We’ve added speed and athleticism up front, but the biggest question is who will step up and give us scoring from the position.” Sifuentes came off the bench for most of the season, but always provided a spark offensively when he entered the game. His three goals
18
came in two of the bigger games of the season, in the upset win over New Mexico at home, and then a two-goal performance against Sacramento State. “Sifuentes has the ability to step up and score goals in big games, as was shown last season. He is athletic and strong, and his ability to score with both feet is a big advantage for him.” The next three in the group are all newcomers, starting with Will Ziegahn, a senior transfer who posted 15 points during the last three years at Missouri State, giving the Rebels another player at the position with Division I experience. Next are a pair of freshmen, Fresno product Robert Garcia, and Tucson, Ariz., native Nick Marshall. “Both freshmen are very similar, are extremely fast and have a knack for scoring goals, and we’ll be looking for that from them this year.” Adding depth to the forwards will be redshirt junior Ryan Burneo, who returns to the squad after missing the past two years with injuries.
MIDFIELDERS At least on paper, the midfielders look to be the strongest area of the team, beginning with two returning starters in DeLeon and Gleason, two players Sanchez considers to have all-conference talent. DeLeon actually received All-MPSF second-team honors last year while making 12 starts and posting three assists in his first year on the team. “Gleason and DeLeon are two of the best on the team in terms of consistency and talent, and we look for them to take control of the game from the midfield.” DeLeon especially is being looked at to have a breakout year, and possibly be the one to fill the scoring void left by Neagle’s team-leading nine goals from a year ago. “With his athleticism and speed, DeLeon definitely has the ability to put shots in the back of the net this year, if he can make the adjustment to being one of the offensive leaders on the field instead of backing up last year’s starters.” Looking to fill the other midfield positions is a trio of newcomers, Roberto Farfan (Portland, Ore.), Zach Kupfer (North Bellmore, N.Y.), and Jonny Espinoza (Carlsbad, Calif.). “Farfan can play anywhere for us, and he’s got probably the highest level of experience of any freshman coming in. A longtime member of the regional ODP, Farfan also played this summer in the PDL for the Portland Timbers, and that level of play should have him ready for MPSF competition.” National U-18 pool member Kupfer is a very creative player who excels with his passing and is a strong finisher, which will help him on the UNLV attack. Espinoza, ranked the 44th recruit in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer. com, is another versatile player who can fit in several spots at UNLV. Returning for the Rebels and challenging for playing time while also adding depth will be senior Camilo Valencia and junior Julian Harnasch.

DEFENDERS The most experienced group on the squad, UNLV returns three starting defenders from 2008, while another key returnee made starts for the Rebel backline in both 2006 and 2007. All four had an outstanding spring season, and Sanchez is looking forward to seeing their play as a group this year. First up is Ornelas, one of the overall leaders of the team. “Ornelas sets the tone for us on the field, he’s very calm and collected, and we rely on him to organize the defense on the field.” Junior Jaime Calvo, meanwhile, started all 18 games for the Rebels after starting half of the games his freshman season. The third returning starter is senior Andrew Friel, a very experienced player and good leader who was an All-MPSF selection in 2007. Rounding out the four is Peter Rodriguez who has made 15 total starts in his career as a Rebel. “Rodriguez had a very good spring, and he’s really grown as a player in his four years here. We’re looking at him as a player who will both defend and contribute in the attack out of the backfield.” Six new players will join the Rebel backline, and all will be fighting for not only playing time, but may steal one of the starting roles as well. First up is Mike Mota, a native of Las Vegas who sat out last season before joining the Rebels in the spring. “Mota’s spring experience will be a big plus for him, and his height (6-2) gives us an advantage both on defense and will allow him to contribute up front on the attacks.” Taylor Bowlin, a native of Pleasant View, Utah, who played on the Real Salt Lake youth team, will fight for a spot as outside back, while Trey Jasenski (North Bellmore, N.Y.) is a tough athletic defender who will contribute in the middle. Another freshman that figures to see significant playing time in his first year in Las Vegas is Honolulu native Brock Granger, a regional ODP player who is one of the most athletic players on the team. Also joining the defenders this year are Gustavo Hernandez (Lompoc, Calif.) and Scott Branson (Castle Rock, Colo.).
GOALKEEPERS With the graduation of Hawk Mummey, for the third straight year the Rebels will start out the season with a new goalie, but the favorite to start the season between the pipes is a familiar
one. Junior Roland Swanson started the last three games of 2007, and gave up just two goals over the three games while posting one shutout. “While obviously this is the most inexperienced area of the team, we feel confident with Swanson in goal,” said Sanchez. “He has a great spring season, has good hands, knows our system, and is very athletic as well.” The Rebels also brought in a pair of goalies, beginning with Simon Cook (Alton, England), a junior transfer who was a two-time all-conference selection at Northern Iowa Community College. “Cook is an older and experienced goalie, and as one of the top JC goalies last year, we expect him to be pushing Swanson for the starting position.” Backing up the two will be freshman Shion Janagiri of Villa Park, Calif.
SCHEDULE Without a doubt the 2009 slate will be the toughest in Sanchez’s four years at the helm of the Rebels, and it all starts with a contest at No. 20 Cal Poly. “We put this schedule together for two reasons, as we knew that the conference tournament was returning this year and we wanted to be prepared for the tough games we would see at the end of the year,” said Sanchez. “The second reason was with how we’ve faded as the season went on, I wanted to get us used to having to play at a top level every time out, so that once we get to league play we know we won’t be able to relax or take a game off. Our main goal is to be peaking at the end of the regular season when we enter the conference tournament.” Following the Cal Poly contest, UNLV will return home to host Central Arkansas and Robert Morris in the UNLV Nike Invitational. It’ll then be back on the road to the Oral Roberts Tournament, where the Rebels will face the host school and then Tulsa. The next weekend will be the UNLV Rebel Classic, in which the team will host Illinois-Chicago and Florida Gulf Coast. A trip to California follows road games against UCLA and UC Riverside. The final nonconference game will be against Houston Baptist, and then the Rebels will open MPSF play against the two newest members of the league, facing Cal State Bakersfield and Seattle University. The league schedule will be a seven-game slate after playing a home-and-away slate for past five years. This year’s conference tournament will be held at Denver on Nov. 12-15.

The 2008 Rebels entered the season on a quest for their first-ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship, and for the first six weeks of the season it looked like that was a goal well within reach. UNLV was bringing back one of its top scoring duos of the past decade with senior midfielder Lamar Neagle, a two-time firstteam All-MPSF selection, and sophomore Daniel Cruz, the MPSF Newcomer of the Year in 2007 and the first Rebel at UNLV to earn Freshman All-American honors. The pair were two of 10 returning starters for the Rebels, while they were very optimistic about the upgrade in goal, with senior Hawk Mummey, a two-time conference goalie at Spokane Falls CC who was playing his final collegiate season in Las Vegas. That optimism only grew in the first month of play, as UNLV jumped out of the gate to win its first three contests, something it had only accomplished twice before in the program’s 35-year history. Leading the way at the beginning was Cruz, as he scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Jacksonville on Aug. 30, and added another goal in UNLV’s 2-1 win over Radford on Sept. 1, with both games coming in the UNLV Rebel Classic. Those performances earned Cruz both conference player of the week honors and placed him on the TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Week, his first national weekly honor. Mummey was also impressive in his first action as a Rebel, posting two shutouts in his first three games, the second of which came at Cal State Fullerton in a 1-0 victory, giving UNLV a 3-0 record to start the year. The streak was snapped in the next outing when Cal State Northridge posted a 2-0 win, and that was followed by a pair of 2-1 games that UNLV split in the UNLV Nike Invitational, losing to Gonzaga but defeating Oral Roberts in overtime off a golden goal from Neagle. The Gonzaga contest was actually the beginning

Lamar Neagle (top) led UNLV and the MPSF with nine goals and also had three game-winners. of an impressive scoring burst by Neagle, as he scored one goal in both of the Nike Invitational games. He followed that with an even more impressive performance, scoring UNLV’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie at San Francisco, and then pulled off one of the highlights of his career in the next game against Saint Mary’s, which was also the second game of the BMW.Nike Classic, hosted by the USF Dons. UNLV was trailing 1-0 in the final seven minutes, before Neagle came to the rescue by scoring back-to-back goals just 29 nine seconds apart, giving him three goals for the weekend. He was also recognized for his performance by both TopDrawerSoccer.com (Team of the Week), and as the MPSF Player of the Week. The play of the Rebels was starting to get them national notice, as not only was UNLV ranked 10th in the NSCAA Far West Region with a 5-2-1 record, but the team was also receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25 poll for the first time this decade. Hoping to ride their momentum to make a serious run at the conference title, the Rebels were instead handed a big setback in the opening weekend of league play, during which they lost two disappointing one-goal decisions, at Air Force and Denver. UNLV attempted to make up ground in the conference when it returned home for three straight MPSF games in Las Vegas. The Rebels kept themselves alive in the conference hunt with a three-game win
2009 UNLV Men’s Soccer Media Guide
streak, beginning with a 4-1 rout of Sacramento State on Oct. 10. The win featured a gamewinner from Neagle and two scores from sophomore Stephen Sifuentes. In the next outing, Neagle again posted the game-winner, this time against San Jose State in a 2-1 victory (Oct. 12). And then came the highlight of the season as for the second straight year UNLV pulled off an overtime upset of New Mexico, this time with Cruz posting the game-winner in a 2-1 final on Oct. 17. The Rebels were looking to continue their win streak on the road, but instead suffered three straight tough losses, all by one goal. The first game at New Mexico was a high scoring affair, but while Neagle posted two goals by himself, UNLV could not find a third goal and fell to the Lobos 3-2 on Halloween night. It was more tricks instead of treats to follow for the Rebels, as all of a sudden the squad was finding itself struggling on offense. In fact, UNLV would finish the final four games scoring a total of two goals. With their chance to play for the league title having slipped away, UNLV would finish the season with two more losses, both at home (at the hands of Denver and Air Force), to finish at 8-9-1 overall for the season, which was still the best record for the squad since 2002. While the end result was not the championship the team had hoped for at the beginning of the year, several Rebels were still honored for their outstanding play during the season. Most notably was the recognition for Neagle, as he finished the season scoring a league-high nine goals, and was second in points with 18. That would earn him not only first team All-MPSF honors, just the second-ever Rebel to hold that distinction, but he also was named to the NSCAA All-Region second team, his first-ever such honor. Cruz, meanwhile, was right behind Neagle in scoring with 13 points and five goals, both of which ranked in the top 10 in the league, and he was also named first team All-MPSF. Both players would end up finishing their career at UNLV after the season, as Neagle graduated and would earn a spot on the Seattle Sounders FC of the MLS. Cruz earned one of the limited spots in “Generation adidas, and the first-ever Rebel to leave school early for the MLS draft was selected by the Houston Dynamo after just two years at UNLV. Two more Rebels were honored by the MPSF, with freshman midfielder Nicholas DeLeon earning a second-team selection, while senior forward Ben Haugland was honorable mention. Meanwhile, in his first year on the squad, Mummey played the entire season between the pipes and finished third in the MPSF with 68 saves, while also posting a 1.24 GAA and two shutouts.

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established during the 1992-1993 season to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The three founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Since its inaugural season the Federation has seen its primary conference membership grow by the addition of the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences and their respective member institutions, as well as the addition of women’s gymnastics and women’s lacrosse. As a testament to its viability, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation continues to successfully navigate the ever-changing sea of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its sports portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its members. As the MPSF begins its 18th year in 2009-10 and continues its legacy of championship competition, it affirm the relevance of its three founding principles, particularly with today’s tumultuous economy. Two new schools will join the MPSF in the sport of men’s soccer this year as well, with Cal State Bakersfield and Seattle University beginning their first season of play in the league. In 2009-10, the MPSF will again sponsor competition in nine intercollegiate Olympic sports while serving over 1,500 student-athletes and approximately 71 teams from 34 universities in 12 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events. 2008-09 was a season of “first-evers” as four titles were garnered by teams that had never previously experienced MPSF or NCAA titles. For the second-consecutive year, five MPSF teams won NCAA championships to bring the NCAA team

Al Beaird Executive Director Mountain Pacific Sports Federation PO Box 850 • Woodland, CA 95776-0850 530-669-7600 office 530-669-7627 fax a abeaird@mpsports.org • www.mpsports.org
Darren Preston Media Relations Coordinator dpreston@mpsports.org
Al Beaird has been the Federation’s only executive director, taking the reigns in December 1997. Beaird presided over the transition of the Federation from what was initially a scheduling alliance to what is now a nationally recognized NCAA Division I multi-sports conference. Beaird directs all aspects of MPSF competition, including championships, officiating, rules compliance, scheduling, media relations, broadcasting, sponsorships and NCAA relations, while also shaping conference legislation, facilitating annual meetings and providing direction and communication for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Administrative and Executive Committees. In 2004, Beaird completed a four-year term, three years as chair, on the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championships Committee and one year as chair of the inaugural NCAA Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Rules Committee. Beaird feels privileged to work with coaches and student-athletes who compete at the highest levels, including many who compete on USA national teams as coaches or players in international and Olympic competition. With his high level of involvement in NCAA Olympic sports, Beaird is often called upon to serve as liaison to the national governing bodies for amateur athletics in the United States and the United States Olympic Committee. Beaird received his undergraduate degree in physical education from UC Davis in 1977 before attaining his Masters of Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento in 1993. Beaird, who lives in Woodland, California, has two daughters who are active in high school and club sports.
championship total to 58 titles since the Federation’s first season of competition in 1992-93. Twenty-four Federation teams and scores of MPSF student-athletes competed in NCAA post-season competition last year. USC led the charge by winning both the MPSF and NCAA men’s water polo title and following with the MPSF women’s water polo title as well. However, UCLA went on to win their fifth-consecutive NCAA women’s water polo championship and seventh in the nine years that championship has been held. Denver won it’s first-ever MPSF men’s soccer championship, breaking the four-year streak of New Mexico before falling in the first-round of NCAA tournament competition. In men’s indoor track and field UCLA won the MPSF title while the Oregon men went on to win its first-ever NCAA indoor championship. Stanford took the MPSF women’s indoor track and field championship for the fifth time in seven years. The Cardinal pulled a double win in men’s gymnastics taking the Federation and NCAA titles for the first-time since 1994-95. Stanford also pulled this double win during the MPSF’s inaugural season in 1992-93. In another first-ever feat, Alaska Anchorage beat the field to win its “first-ever” Federation title in women’s gymnastics. To round out the season, USC took its “firstever” MPSF men’s volleyball title with a determined charge by a young Trojan team at season’s end, falling just short of an NCAA title, which was won in a rousing five-set title match by a veteran UC Irvine squad; their second NCAA title in three years.

LIED ATHLETIC COMPLEX
Opened in 1996, the $8.5 million Lied Athletic Complex remains one of the nation’s premier on-campus sports facilities. The Lied, honored with Athletic Management magazine’s 1997 Award of Excellence, was exclusively funded by private donations beginning with a cornerstone gift of $4 million from the Lied Foundation Trust, through its trustee Ms. Christina Hixson, in 1993. A generous $1.5 million gift from Si and Marilyn Redd provided the Lied with a state-of-the-art sports medicine center for preventative and rehabilitative care. This 8,500-square-foot center includes a doctor’s office and examination room, a taping room, an aquatic therapy room, two additional therapy and rehabilitation areas and a self-contained drug-testing facility.
The Ernie Becker Sr. Strength and Conditioning Center features 8,500 square feet of main floor containing Olympic platforms, free weights, power racks and more than 60 weight stations. Additionally, a 1,200-square-foot balcony offers areas for plyometrics, stretching and aerobics. The Lied’s 10,000-square-foot equipment center provides studentathlete support service featuring laundry, equipment and storage. The Conrad Hilton Foundation provided funding for the Barron Hilton Auditorium located inside the Lied Athletic Complex. This 328-seat auditorium provides student-athletes with study hall facilities including individual meeting rooms for tutorial support and team meetings. Designed with all Rebel sports in mind, the Lied Athletic Complex offers every student-athlete the best possible environment to pursue their athletic and academic dreams.
THE HONORARY LETTERMEN’S WALL
The Lettermen’s Wall stands as a permanent tribute to those men and women of vision who, through their generosity, have enhanced the lives and experiences of UNLV student-athletes through their contributions to the construction of the Lied Athletic Complex. The wall transforms a male and female UNLV student-athlete into beautiful etched images on polished crystal plaques.

No less than three national championships were celebrated as part of last fall’s UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame ceremonies held on Sept. 19, 2008. Five former Rebel players (including the 17th football honoree all-time), one longtime head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams in being inducted. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletic Hall of Fame will now grow to 96 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former studentathletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. TIM BLENKIRON (1994-97) was one of the best doubles players in school history and paired up with Luke Smith to win the 1997 NCAA Doubles Championship, becoming one of six individual national champions at UNLV. The 1997 All-American was a member of three Big West Conference champion squads. JOE KRISTOSIK (1995-98) was UNLV football’s first consensus first team All-American after being a four-year starter as a punter for the Rebels. He turned in one of the best seasons at his position in college football history as a senior in 1998 while leading the nation with an average of 46.2, which was the second-highest in NCAA history for a punter with at least 75 attempts. KIM RONDINA (1994-97) was the greatest slugger in UNLV softball history and its only two-time conference MVP. She was named first team All-America in 1995 and third team in 1996 and ‘97. Helping the Rebels to three NCAA tournament appearances, including one trip the Women’s College World Series, Rondina still holds 13 single-season and career batting records. LUKE SMITH (1994-97) stands as the only multiple NCAA champion in UNLV athletics history after winning the 1997 national title in singles and doubles. A three-time All-American, he also was a 1996 NCAA Doubles Semifinalist. Smith was a member of the 1997 Davis Cup Team for his native Australia and twice reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in doubles. MARIANNE VALLIN (1994-97) becomes the first UNLV women’s tennis player to enter the hall of fame. A three-time conference MVP, she was All-American in singles three times after being named the ITA National Freshman of the Year. The winningest singles player in program history, she brought home the 1997 Gladys Heldman Award, which goes to the nation’s top women’s tennis student-athlete. The 1998 UNLV MEN’S GOLF TEAM is one of only two Rebel squads to earn a national championship as head coach Dwaine Knight’s team won the 1998 NCAA team title in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rebels shot a final-round one-over par 289 to finish at 34-under-par 1,118, which set the NCAA record for lowest total in history. The 1995 UNLV WOMEN’S SOFTBALL TEAM set or tied 30 different school team records and 17 single-season marks en route to tying the record for wins with a 49-14 record. Coached by Shan McDonald, it was the first UNLV softball squad to win an outright conference title and finished third at the Women’s College World Series. HEAD COACH AL MCDANIELS (1975-92) guided the women’s track and field program to five conference championships and produced more than 60 individual champions and 40 All-Americans. The four-time conference coach of the year produced two NCAA Champions and six league MVPs. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR DR. JAMES CALLAWAY D.D.S. is a nationally respected dentist who has been part of the Rebel family for three decades, serving as the team dentist since 1977.
