Cox Pavilion 05
The UNLV volleyball team received a new home in 2001 in the $16.8 million Cox Pavilion. The pavilion is a 78,300 square-foot, multi-purpose, state-ofthe-art venue connected to the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus. Cox Communications and the Thomas & Mack Center formed a partnership that brought the new facility to UNLV and the Las Vegas Community. As part of a $5 million agreement, Cox Communications secured the naming rights for the facility as well as opportunities for sponsorship and hospitality. Former UNLV President Dr. Carol Harter stated when it opened, “We are pleased that Cox, a relatively new member of the Southern Nevada corporate community, has chosen to take an active role in supporting both academics and athletics at UNLV. channel, will benefit the community in many ways.” The pavilion is a two-level structure. The ground floor features men’s and women’s locker facilities, player lounges and practice courts for basketball and volleyball. The top level is a multi-purpose venue with a seating capacity for 2,800 and features padded, retractable seating throughout. “The Cox Pavilion features the best volleyball venue in the country and our athletes love to play in the bright arena with the home crowd support,” said Allison Keeley, UNLV’s volleyball head coach. “The size creates an intimate viewing venue where our fans feel like they are part of the match. We appreciate the effort on the behalf of UNLV to showcase our team in such a spectacular setting.”

Academic All-Conference 1996-Present
UNLV volleyball turned in another impressive season in the classroom as 10 student-athletes were named to the 2008 Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team. The 10 honorees marked the eighth straight season that at least five UNLV volleyball student-athletes appeared on the academic team. In fact, academic advising has helped produce 67 such honorees since UNLV joined the MWC in 1999. Four players - Erin Greenwood, Kelsey Keeler, Tabitha Mabrey and Jessica Walters - earned the designation of MWC Scholar-Athlete for the 2008-09 academic year. Overall, 22 Rebel student-athletes have achieved this status dating back to the 2002-03 academic year. Also, two student-athletes earned spots on the Dean’s List for the 2008 fall semester, while three achieved the feat for the 2009 spring semester. Jessica Walters was named UNLV’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete the past two academic years, while owning the highest cumulative GPA among all female studentathletes. Besides conference and school recognition, the program has achieved national awards, as well. The team was one of 70 NCAA Division I programs to earn the 2007-08 AVCA Team Academic Award for amassing a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Individually, Walters has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Eight first teams in 2007 and 2008, while Greenwood was tabbed to the third team in 2008. UNLV maintains an academic support system for its student-athletes that is designed to ensure success on and off the fields of play. Academic advisors work with the 17 men’s and women’s sports ensuring student-athletes received personalized care regarding their progress in education.

Sports Medicine 09
Dan Wilson Graduate Intern Athletic Trainer Laura Harp Undergraduate Student Athletic Trainer The Marilyn & Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex sprawls over an 8,500-square-foot area. Day-to-day preventative medicine on the campus is made easy with with the opening of the Marilyn and Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex. The state-ofthe-art operation is a major part of the $8.5 million Lied Athletic facility. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over and 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises.
A skylight welcomes natural light into the rehabilitation room. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. “This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine,” says Kyle Wilson, UNLV’s Director of Athletic Training. We’re now more efficient, more accessible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries.”

10 2008 Outlook The UNLV Volleyball program is coming off of its third straight season of winning at least 16 matches and fifth year in a row of prevailing in at least 15. The Rebels return 12 letterwinners from the 2008 squad and welcome one freshman into the mix, as they aim to maintain the high level of play built over the past half decade. As previously mentioned, the Rebels have had a successful run of winning at least 15 matches the past five years. In the 13 years prior to Keeley's arrival, the program had only witnessed two seasons of reaching the 15-win plateau. The 2008 team went 16-14 overall and finished in a tie for fourth place in the Mountain West Conference with a 9-7 mark. In all, the 2009 version will be comprised of four seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and one freshman. Eight of the 13 student-athletes on this year's roster were members of the record-setting 2007 campaign that racked up a 24-6 record en route to the program's first conference championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Erin Greenwood, Samantha Noland, Samantha Richard and Jessica Walters will be counted on for their senior leadership and experience to guide this year's squad. Besides the senior class, the junior quartet has ample experience, as well. Kelsey Keeler, Kela Lau Hee Jeralynn Makaiwi and Sara Nehf were freshmen during the '07 run. This year's team will have two key positions to fill, as Camille Cunningham and Melody Nua have graduated from the squad. Both players racked up numerous accolades last year, as they each were named to the 2008 MWC All-Conference Team. Cunningham became UNLV's second student-athlete to achieve AVCA recognition, as she was West Region Honorable Mention by the association. She ended her career ranked in the top 10 in alltime matches played, sets played, aces and digs. Nua left UNLV as the career leader in matches played, sets played and assists. Cursty Jackson rounded out UNLV's trio of awardwinning student-athletes from 2008. Jackson, who will be a sophomore in 2009, was named the MWC's Freshman of the Year in '08. Jackson returns after playing in 25 matches last year and notching 210 kills, which were the third-most by a Rebel. She had nine matches where she registered 10 or more kills and she ranked second in all three blocking categories.
Hitters & Blockers The 2009 Rebels will have their most depth at the net. The team will have eight to 10 options, depending on the lineup. Outside: Walters, Nehf, Keeler, Leah Maurer and Monika Karney will line up as outside hitters, while Richard and sophomore Amanda Alles should see some time attacking when not setting. Walters sits ninth in UNLV's record book for career attempts with 1,828 and just outside the top 10 in
kills with 691 in 84 matches played. She saw action in 29 matches last season and led the team in kills (284) and kills per set (2.99). She had 15 contests with 10 or more tallies and also had 84 digs and 19 blocks. Nehf appeared in 26 matches and contributed 177 kills and 94 digs last season. 12 Head Coach
Allison Keeley Head Coach
Allison Keeley enters her sixth season as the head coach of the Rebels and owns a record of 90-57 at the helm of the UNLV program. After five years on the job, Keeley has the UNLV volleyball program on the right track with five consecutive seasons of 15 or more victories, including back-to-back tallies of 20+ wins during the 2006 and 2007 campaigns. She took a UNLV program that had five consecutive losing seasons prior to her arrival into a top 25 squad. In those five years pre-Keeley, UNLV held a combined record of 52-88. In the five years since, the Rebels have won 90 matches. She guided UNLV to three straight semifinal appearances in the Mountain West Conference Tournament before achieving what no other coach in the program’s history had accomplished. In 2007, she surpassed the semifinal threshold and won the 2007 MWC Championship earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, a first for UNLV.
In 2005, Keeley’s squad closed out the season with a 15-15 overall record, while finishing 10-6 in the MWC (fourth place), but came within one point of playing in the program’s first-ever MWC Championship. In 2004, Keeley revitalized a program that between 1978 and 2003 had only four winning seasons in 14 years of play (no team was fielded from 1981-83 and 1986-95). The squad finished the ‘04 season with a 15-12 record and the program’s highest finish in MWC play (fourth) with an 8-6 mark. Besides coaching success on the court, her players have also excelled in the classroom. Thus far, Keeley has produced 42 Academic All-Mountain West Conference selections, which included tying the program-high of 10 honorees in 2005 and 2008. Jessica Walters has been named UNLV’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete the past two academic years, while earning ESPN The Magazine All-District First Team honors. Erin Greenwood was tabbed to the all-district third team.
Overall, she has produced one AVCA All-America Honorable Mention player (Lauren Miramontes), one AVCA West Region First Team member (Miramontes), one AVCA West Region Honorable Mention (Camille Cunningham), 12 all-conference honorees and two conference freshmen of the year (Maria Aladjova and Cursty Jackson).
Prior to coming to UNLV, Keeley was the head coach at Villanova University from 2001-03. She helped rejuvenate the Wildcat program and left Philadelphia with a 39-48 overall record. She helped move the Wildcats from the bottom of the Big East into a position of playing in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Her finest season in Philadelphia came in 2002 when the Wildcats went 18-16 and improved 11 matches over the previous year’s record.
In 2008, she led the team to a 16-14 overall mark, while tying for fourth in the Mountain West Conference with a 9-7 record. The year included a home win over then-#13 Colorado State and sweeping the regular-season contests with BYU for the first time in program history. The season ended with Cunningham being named to the AVCA All-West Region squad, as well as earning all-conference honors. Melody Nua and Jackson rounded out the AllMWC recipients.
Before her three years at Villanova, she was the head coach for three years at Southern Arkansas University, a NCAA Division II school. In her first year at SAU, the team finished third in the Gulf South Conference. From 1996-98, she was the head coach at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and her teams qualified for postseason play twice in three years. She began her coaching career at Sparks High School in Sparks, Nev.
The Rebels had a magical run in 2007, which saw them notch a program-best 24 victories to only six defeats. The squad was recognized in the national rankings for the first time in program history with UNLV being part of 13 consecutive polls. The Rebels achieved back-to-back weeks as the 25th-ranked team and 11 weeks in the “receiving votes” category.
Keeley graduated in 1990 from Carleton College with a B.A. in political science while also earning all-conference honors as a setter on the volleyball team. She earned her master’s degree in education from Azusa Pacific in 1998.
Statistically speaking, the 2007 squad ranked highly in the NCAA’s final categories. The team was 10th in digs-per-game, 12th in assists-per-game and 13th in kills-per-game. Major success brings with it recognition and the awards flowed UNLV’s way in ‘07. Not only was she was named the 2007 MWC Co-Head Coach of the Year for her team’s efforts and was later recognized as the AVCA’s West Region Coach of the Year, but she also coached UNLV’s first All-America (Miramontes) and four all-conference selections. In 2006, the Rebels won 20 matches for only the third time in school history. The 20 victories included a six-match winning streak that led the Rebels to an 8-2 mark to open up the season. One of the highlights of the campaign was UNLV earning its first victory in program history at home over Colorado State on Nov. 12. In MWC action, the squad finished fourth for the third straight year with a 10-6 record.

Assistant Coaches 13
Elaini Kollias Assistant Coach
Jason SMith Assistant Coach
Elaini Kollias enters her sixth season as an assistant coach with the Rebels.
Jason Smith enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Rebels.
Kollias has been at UNLV for all five years of the resurgence of the program and has helped coach the team to no less than 15 wins in each of her years in Las Vegas. She has helped head coach Allison Keeley to an overall mark of 90-57. Included in those 90 victories are back-to-back seasons of at least 20 victories with a school-record 24 amassed in 2007.
Smith came to UNLV after a two-year stint as the head coach at Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz.
Prior to UNLV, she spent three years as a graduate assistant and assistant coach with West Virginia’s volleyball team. During her time in Morgantown she was responsible for on-court coaching as well as actively recruiting the West Coast. “Elaini is extremely personable, has a ton of energy and a great work ethic,” said UNLV head coach Allison Keeley. “This combination of attributes makes her a great asset on the court and a tremendous recruiter.” Before joining the Mountaineer staff, Kollias spent eight seasons as a head coach for the Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club, coaching various age levels. She also assisted in a number of volleyball summer camps over the years, including the Junior National Performance camp and the South Coast Beach Volleyball camp. Kollias started her playing career at Saddleback Junior College (Mission Viejo, Calif.) where she was named team MVP twice and was a two time allconference member. She was later inducted into the Saddleback Hall of Fame. She then went on to play for Concordia University in Irvine, Calif., and set a school record for most kills in a match with 34. Kollias holds the career record for kills and is third in all-time assists for the Eagles. In 2002, she was a member of an American contingent that won the gold medal at the Scottish National Championships. The team was coached by George Mason University’s Pat Kendrick. Kollias is from Dana Point, Calif., and graduated from Concordia University in 1996 with a B.A. in elementary education. She earned her master’s degree in athletic coaching education in 2002 from West Virginia.
In his two years at the helm of the AWC Matador volleyball program he amassed a record of 47-26, which included back-to-back 20-win seasons and a 27-8 record in 2007. Smith helped AWC to its seventh and eighth straight Region I titles. The Matadors were crowned ACCAC (Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) champions in 2007. The 2007 squad came one win shy of reaching the program’s first-ever berth into the NJCAA Tournament, as it lost in the District A Championship match. In all, Smith coached one NJCAA All-America, one ACCAC Player of the Year and six all-region performers. More importantly, Smith was as adamant about his student-athletes’ efforts in the classroom than on the court. In both years at AWC his squads were named an NJCAA Fall Academic Team of the Year by obtaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher. Prior to AWC, Smith spent three years in the Mountain West Conference at Utah. As a Ute assistant, he saw the team reach the NCAA Tournament on three occasions and rack up a winning percentage of 73% (69-25). He was a part of one MWC Championship squad in 2005, as Utah defeated BYU for the title in Las Vegas. In his three years in Salt Lake City, he saw 23 Utes named to Academic AllMWC teams. Before joining Utah, Smith spent two years at Ferris State (NCAA Div. II) and Iowa Western Community College after beginning his coaching career at Avila College (NAIA). Smith played collegiately at Graceland University in 1992. At Graceland, he was a member of several regional championship teams while earning his bachelor’s degree in business and economics.

30 2008 Review
Final Serve The 2008 season ended on Nov. 29, with a 3-0 loss to then-#14 Florida. The Rebels finished the year 16-14 overall and tied TCU for fourth in the Mountain West with identical 9-7 records. The Rebels reached the 15-win plateau in each of the past five seasons. The team has won at least 16 overall in the past three years, which includes back-to-back 20-win campaigns in 2006 and 2007.
2007, was joined by Cunningham on the 17-member squad. Cursty Jackson rounded out the awards for the Rebels, as she was named the MWC's Freshman of the Year. Jackson became only the second Rebel to earn MWC Freshman of the Year recognition. Maria Aladjova (2004-07) shared the honor in 2004 before rattling off three straight All-MWC nods.
We Played Them
The overall wins were aided by victories racked up in conference play, which UNLV has managed to win at least eight in Keeley’s five-year stint. With 2008’s nine conference wins, the squad has won no less than that amount since 2005.
In all, the Rebels faced six ranked teams in 2008 and owned a 1-5 record in those contests. The lone victory came in an Oct. 16 bout with then-#13 Colorado State, which UNLV won 3-1.
Cunningham Digs Out Award
The Rebels had six opponents (Dayton, Utah, Oregon, Miami (Ohio), Florida and Colorado State) make the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
UNLV’s Camille Cunningham was tabbed to the 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) All-West Region Honorable Mention Team. Cunningham, who was also named to the Mountain West’s All-Conference Team, became only the second Rebel to earn AVCA recognition. Cunningham stepped into the libero position in 2008 and topped all conference defenders in overall and conference digs-per-set statistics, while helping UNLV achieve top billing in both of those categories as a team. She finished the year first among the team with 527 digs, which is the thirdmost in a single-season at UNLV. She registered at least 11 digs in 28 of the team’s 29 matches, with a career-best 33 coming in a win over Arizona State on Aug. 29. She provided some offense, as she led the team in aces (23) with a career-best four served up against South Carolina on Aug. 30. She placed her name in the UNLV career record book on four occasions. She ranked second in digs with 1,280, seventh in matches played (112) and aces (82) and ninth in sets played (372). In the single-season record book, she is seventh in aces (36 in 2007) and then second (550 in 2008) and sixth (354 in 2007) in digs. In 2008, she registered at least 11 digs in 29 of 30 matches during the season with 12 contests of at least 20. She amassed a career-best 33 against Arizona State (Aug. 29). Cunningham joined Lauren Miramontes (2003-07) as the only two Rebels to earn postseason recognition by the AVCA. Miramontes earned regional status twice with an honorable mention in 2005 and a first team selection in 2008. She ultimately earned a 2008 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention.
Trio Earn MWC Honors For the fourth consecutive year the UNLV volleyball program placed at least two members on the Mountain West's All-Conference Team, which was voted on by the league's nine head coaches. Melody Nua, who was a repeat selection from
Overall, UNLV’s six NCAA Tournament opponents went a combined 7-6. Utah, Florida and Oregon went 2-1, while Colorado State was 1-1. Dayton and Miami (Ohio) both went 0-1.
In The Rankings Besides playing six opponents that reached the postseason, the Rebels had six matches against ranked competition. UNLV went 1-5 in those six matches with the lone win coming on Oct. 16, against then-13th-ranked Colorado State. On Dec. 23, the final Bison/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll came out and four of those six opponents finished the year ranked. Oregon was the highest ranked opponent with its #9 placing. Florida followed closely behind at #10, while Utah (#16) and Colorado State (#24) rounded out the quartet.
Nationally Speaking For the second straight season UNLV’s libero ranked within the top 50 of the NCAA’s year-end statistics. Cunningham finished the year with the 25th-best digs-per-set figure at 5.00. She followed in the footsteps of her predecessor, Jada Walker, who ranked 33rd in 2007 with a 5.64 dps average.
Conference Speaking For the fifth consecutive year, UNLV’s defense topped the Mountain West’s overall and conference-only digs categories. The five years coincide with Allison Keeley taking the reigns of the program at the start of the 2004 season. Keeley’s defense didn’t disappoint in 2008, as it averaged 15.97 digs-per-set in its 30 matches, while notching a 15.93 average in its 16 conference contests. Both numbers were good enough for #1 in each category among the league’s nine squads.
Nua Records For The Books Nua ended her four-year run at UNLV as one of the best players in school history. She managed to play in all 120 matches and all but three sets in her
career as a Rebel. She closed out her career as the all-time record holder in matches played (120), sets played (442) and assists (4,797). Besides those three career marks, she etched her name in the all-time aces and digs categories, as well. In the single-season book, she owns four of the ten best assists records. She picked up her second Mountain West AllConference nod, as she led the Rebels in assists (1,048), finished second in aces (20) and third in digs (256). She tallied double-digit assists in all 30 matches, while hitting the 20 barrier on 25 occasions. In her four-year career, she reached the double-digit mark in assists in 119 of 120 matches. She amassed 13 double-doubles in 2008 with help from 13 double-digit dig matches. She racked up 40 double-doubles in her four years at as a Rebel. She had three different three-match streaks where she notched a double-double. She topped out at 16 digs for a season-high against Utah (Nov. 8).
ESPn Academics A pair of UNLV volleyball student-athletes were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic AllDistrict Eight Team on Nov. 6. Jessica Walters was tabbed to the first team for the second straight year, while Erin Greenwood was selected to the third team. Walters and Greenwood were no strangers to receiving academic recognition, as they each have been named to the Mountain West Conference’s Academic All-Conference Teams the past two years. Each has been honored on the MWC’s Scholar-Athlete Teams, as Greenwood has three selections to Walters’ two. The duo was the past two recipients of the Top Sports Award the past two academic years (Walters 2007-08, Greenwood 2006-07). Walters went one step further and took home UNLV’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete honors in April 2008.
MWC Academics The UNLV volleyball program placed 10 of its student-athletes on the fall 2008 Academic AllMountain West Conference team. The 10-person contingent matched the program's highest figure, which has been reached on two other occasions, 2002 and 2005. The Rebels led the league with 10, while three institutions (BYU, New Mexico and Utah) followed closely behind with eight apiece. Erin Greenwood, Samantha Noland and Jessica Walters are three-time honorees, while Kelsey Keeler has been recognized twice. Camille Cunningham, Cursty Jackson, Kela Lau Hee, Leah Maurer and Samantha Richard were selected for the first time.

Jeffrey Seals Sports Information Volleyball Contact Media Requests All requests for working press, radio, television or photo credentials should be directed to the UNLV Sports Information Office via letter or e-mail at least 24 hours in advance. Proof of coverage may be required. Requests can be made by calling, e-mailing or faxing Jeffrey Seals, the volleyball SID.
Weekly Releases & Recaps UNLV makes its athletics-related media releases available exclusively on the internet website, www.UNLVRebels.com. The weekly release will be prepared each week and will be posted on the school’s official website prior to that week’s events in Adobe PDF format. However, the release is also available through electronic mail. Game recaps will be posted online following each contest.
Enjoying a complete redesign last year, the official UNLV athletics website www.UNLVRebels.com has steadily expanded in both contents and usership since its premiere in 1997. As one of the hundreds of official athletic sites that make up the CBS College Sports Network, the Rebels’ home on the internet features in-depth, updated information 24 hours a day. The official UNLV athletic website features photo layout on the front page. In addition, the site takes advantage of a number of CBSCollegeSports.com online features, including its exclusive GameTracker technology, allowing Rebel fans to follow live simulated game action, details and full play-by-play. Through the site, CBS C also operates the Rebels’ online store, which provides officially licensed merchandise and apparel. Also, UNLVRebels.com is your home for UNLV All-Access, which is a popular online service that features the most in-depth coverage of Rebel sports through exclusive audio and video content, including live games streamed via broadband, special features, highlights, press conferences and coaches’ shows.
Any members of the media interested in having the weekly release and/or game recaps e-mailed to them should request to be added to the general list by e-mailing volleyball SID Jeffrey Seals at jeff.seals@unlv.edu.

48 Mountain West Conference
Birth Of A Conference The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions --Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming-- decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team WAC re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC’s eight members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV entered the fold in 1996 and TCU began its first year of competition in 2005-06, completing the membership in the MWC as it stands today. From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springs-based league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within the MWC boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four league schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet - the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWCs newest member TCU. MWC members have participated in 36 bowl games in 10 years with eight of the nine schools going to at least one postseason event. The MWC has earned 45 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, while women’s basketball has tallied 27 NCAA bids, four Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. The MWC has sent at least 30 teams to NCAA postseason events each of the past 10 years, while capturing seven NCAA team championships during that span.

MWC Volleyball Year In Review Utah claimed its second straight MWC volleyball regular-season title and third overall in 2008, securing the Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. Colorado State earned an atlarge berth into the 2008 NCAA Tournament joining Utah in postseason action. The teams combined for a 3-2 overall record, which gave the league a record of 29-28 in postseason play over the past 10 years. Utah head coach Beth Launiere was selected for the third time in her career as the MWC Coach of the Year, while earning similar recognition by the AVCA West Region. Launiere has now been named coach of the year three times each by the MWC and AVCA. Five MWC student-athletes were named to the 2008 AVCA All-American Team. New Mexiso’s Jeanne Fairchild and Utah’s Lori Baird earned thirdteam All-American honors, while sharing the MWC’s Player of the Year award. Colorado State’s Mekana Barnes and Ashley Fornstrom were joined by Utah’s Emillie Toone on the honorable mention All-American team. Since 1999, 15 student-athletes have garnered All-America status, while an additional 17 have been honorable mention All-Americans. Barnes, Fornstrom, Fairchild, Baird and Toone were named to the AVCA’s West Region Team, while UNLV’s Camille Cunningham was honorable mention.

Craig Thompson Commissioner Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s first employee when he was named commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the everchanging landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 11th season of competition in 2009-10, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for MWC institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Progress in its approach, the MWC has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for studentathletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. He has been instrumental in negotiating nearly $230 million in television revenue, directed the league through expansion and has been an innovator in the postseason bowl structure as MWC teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games.

His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) and Comcast to become the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its nine athletic programs. Thompson has been instrumental in strengthening the position of the MWC in its current Bowl Championship Series (BCS) structure. In 2006, he spearheaded an effort that resulted in better access for the MWC and more than doubled the annual BCS revenue on an annual basis for non-automatic-qualifying conferences. The MWC has been steadfast in its efforts to find a way to make the BCS system fair to all universities.

The MWC has sent a record five teams into postseason action both of the last two seasons (2007-08) and over the past five campaigns boasts the best winning percentage in bowl games among FBS conferences. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the merger of the two leagues in 1991. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son, Ted, and a daughter, Emma.

LIED ATHLETIC COMPLEX
Opened in 1996, the $8.5 million Lied Athletic Complex remains one of the nation’s premier on-campus sports facilities. The Lied, honored with Athletic Management magazine’s 1997 Award of Excellence, was exclusively funded by private donations beginning with a cornerstone gift of $4 million from the Lied Foundation Trust, through its trustee Ms. Christina Hixson, in 1993. A generous $1.5 million gift from Si and Marilyn Redd provided the Lied with a state-of-the-art sports medicine center for preventative and rehabilitative care. This 8,500-square-foot center includes a doctor’s office and examination room, a taping room, an aquatic therapy room, two additional therapy and rehabilitation areas and a self-contained drug-testing facility.
The Ernie Becker Sr. Strength and Conditioning Center features 8,500 square feet of main floor containing Olympic platforms, free weights, power racks and more than 60 weight stations. Additionally, a 1,200-square-foot balcony offers areas for plyometrics, stretching and aerobics. The Lied’s 10,000-square-foot equipment center provides studentathlete support service featuring laundry, equipment and storage. The Conrad Hilton Foundation provided funding for the Barron Hilton Auditorium located inside the Lied Athletic Complex. This 328-seat auditorium provides student-athletes with study hall facilities including individual meeting rooms for tutorial support and team meetings. Designed with all Rebel sports in mind, the Lied Athletic Complex offers every student-athlete the best possible environment to pursue their athletic and academic dreams.
THE HONORARY LETTERMEN’S WALL
The Lettermen’s Wall stands as a permanent tribute to those men and women of vision who, through their generosity, have enhanced the lives and experiences of UNLV student-athletes through their contributions to the construction of the Lied Athletic Complex. The wall transforms a male and female UNLV student-athlete into beautiful etched images on polished crystal plaques.

No less than three national championships were celebrated as part of last fall’s UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame ceremonies held on Sept. 19, 2008. Five former Rebel players (including the 17th football honoree all-time), one longtime head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams in being inducted. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletic Hall of Fame will now grow to 96 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former studentathletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. TIM BLENKIRON (1994-97) was one of the best doubles players in school history and paired up with Luke Smith to win the 1997 NCAA Doubles Championship, becoming one of six individual national champions at UNLV. The 1997 All-American was a member of three Big West Conference champion squads. JOE KRISTOSIK (1995-98) was UNLV football’s first consensus first team All-American after being a four-year starter as a punter for the Rebels. He turned in one of the best seasons at his position in college football history as a senior in 1998 while leading the nation with an average of 46.2, which was the second-highest in NCAA history for a punter with at least 75 attempts. KIM RONDINA (1994-97) was the greatest slugger in UNLV softball history and its only two-time conference MVP. She was named first team All-America in 1995 and third team in 1996 and ‘97. Helping the Rebels to three NCAA tournament appearances, including one trip the Women’s College World Series, Rondina still holds 13 single-season and career batting records. LUKE SMITH (1994-97) stands as the only multiple NCAA champion in UNLV athletics history after winning the 1997 national title in singles and doubles. A three-time All-American, he also was a 1996 NCAA Doubles Semifinalist. Smith was a member of the 1997 Davis Cup Team for his native Australia and twice reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in doubles. MARIANNE VALLIN (1994-97) becomes the first UNLV women’s tennis player to enter the hall of fame. A three-time conference MVP, she was All-American in singles three times after being named the ITA National Freshman of the Year. The winningest singles player in program history, she brought home the 1997 Gladys Heldman Award, which goes to the nation’s top women’s tennis student-athlete. The 1998 UNLV MEN’S GOLF TEAM is one of only two Rebel squads to earn a national championship as head coach Dwaine Knight’s team won the 1998 NCAA team title in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rebels shot a final-round one-over par 289 to finish at 34-under-par 1,118, which set the NCAA record for lowest total in history. The 1995 UNLV WOMEN’S SOFTBALL TEAM set or tied 30 different school team records and 17 single-season marks en route to tying the record for wins with a 49-14 record. Coached by Shan McDonald, it was the first UNLV softball squad to win an outright conference title and finished third at the Women’s College World Series. HEAD COACH AL MCDANIELS (1975-92) guided the women’s track and field program to five conference championships and produced more than 60 individual champions and 40 All-Americans. The four-time conference coach of the year produced two NCAA Champions and six league MVPs. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR DR. JAMES CALLAWAY D.D.S. is a nationally respected dentist who has been part of the Rebel family for three decades, serving as the team dentist since 1977.
